Which School To Best Apply For Computer Science In Nigeria. by syluck(m): 2:41pm On Feb 22, 2021
Hello guys,

It's my three months of learning programming language. Never thought I will be this enthusiastic student software engineer this far.

There's this issue I'm having right now. It's about the institution that will accept me to read computer science.
I'm not likely going for universities because majority of them are after "Chemistry", "Physics", "Biology" etc FOR JAMB COMBINATION.

Literally, I wrote Jamb last year hoping to read "Cooperative Economics" in Unizik. I scored 230 and my jamb combination is "Economics", "Mathematics" and "Government". Still last year, I came across programming and the beauty in it and I lost interest totally in my initial course. Like every other programmers, I also need this certificate in computer science.
The problem is, I was never a science kid in secondary school and I don't have any related science subjects in my WAEC except Agriculture. And most institutions are after those science subjects and combination.

Like I said, I don't intend going for universities because I know it's practically impossible for them to admit non-science students into the department of Computer Science.
I just need to know if there's any polytechnic that'll accept me with my jamb combinations and SSCE result.

Neither will polytechnic admit you to study any science related course. Just sit for waec or neco and include science subjects to your list of subjects.. Best of luck!

Who said you need a computer Science degree.

You don't need it for anything

At this point in software development, job postings do not require you to have a degree in anything

Even some people that work for Google don't have degrees

You don't need to waste money sitting for waec or neco or read chemistry and physics.

Just make sure you get very goooood at programming and opportunities would come your way

Computer Science degrees are trash in Nigerian schools anyway. You'll never remember what you were taught after writing the exams.

That's 'cause the lecturers teach you so you can pass their courses. Full stop.

I'll suggest you study something else you're interested in (business, arts, English) if at all you feel you need to go to the university

PS: Incase someone thinks I don't know what I'm saying, I'm a programmer, also a student of UNN studying computer Science and Statistics. So I know how the university system operates, as it relates software developers.

Rewrite waec and go for the course, don't mind anyone who tells you not to get a comp sci degree, but get ready for maths that goes beyond the nonsense theoretical world into the more practical and abstract, computer science would teach you more than programming and would open you to the beauty of computation.

That's your own view and opinion bro. Even if Nigerian students are transferred to Yale there would be no difference, even if you are to reproduce what the lecturer taught what about what you are learning? Learning and exams or tests are two different things, your degree is simply an award for finishing university, the most important thing is, WHAT DID YOU LEARN?

Well said bro!! You're on the track. Studying a computer or Tech courses in Nigeria University is total waste of time and money. If you're serious about becoming a tech professional please go and learn a programming language

Go to landmark university if your parents can afford it. They would teach you computational math, Data structures and algorithms, and the fundamentals of programming.
If you are not a science kid, raise money and go to a coding bootcamp, say 6 months.

Don't let me feel like I've wasted my precious time by quoting you. As a smart human being that you claim you are, you could have done a Google search. Programmers are extremely smart people and shouldn't be asking too many questions.

If you know that you are not too smart, better back off this career, you would be competing with millions of smart people for jobs, better evaluate yourself properly.

Programming is not about language, it's about the concept. Language is just syntax and you need to think like a programmer, understand Data structures and some algorithms to be a top software engineer or Web developer.

I thought as much, I knew insults would be the next step for someone seeking for knowledge, you never start undecided.

Wishing you the best in your endeavor.

Extremely lazy bloke that wanna become a programmer, you think it's for the faint hearted?

If you wanna exchange insults with your parents, you can go knock on their door and rain insults on them, look at a dumb boy that hasn't achieved anything on earth not even an ordinary degree insulting people. This is actually funny grin.

Wishing you the best in your endeavor.

See bros, studying CS in uni is a great advantage, don't mind people telling you crap about boot camp or whatever, the libraries they are using are written using algorithms carefully planned and thought out by CS geniuses. But I'll advise you to study online or even if you study it in a university, go to a good university (ask around you'd find good CS unis), and be serious with it or else you'll waste four years doing nothing.
