For the first time mom. Follow this advice
1. Use exclusive breastfeeding. It is cheaper and healty. For that 6 months, no hospital for your kid except vaccination or immunization. You will also spend little. But please feed yourself very well.
2. Use pampers. It is cheaper and healthier.
3. Use traditional method for many child early health care like jaundice, beriberi, removal of tongue string, etc. I don't need to mention them because most of them they don't English names.
4. Protect your child from witches and wizards. By keeping anti witch items or cream around your child.
5. Always take your child to hospital or health centre for any health issues. Never buy child syrup from pharmacist without health practitioner prescription untill he or she is 6months or more
6. Always involve your mom or elder woman who has child caring experience
7 Good luck
Which one is anti witch item or cream pls

First time mums always make mistakes...
Some made/make mistakes with the food...
Some its with over pampering...
Some do not let their children become independent early enough.

A friend once messaged me that her kid was beginning to have piles because his poopoo was too strong and was constantly so...I told her to feed him Veggies more often and she told me he doesn't eat it...I told her that the decision to give him the right food lies with her, there are so many ways to get your child to eat Vegetables...We just have to find out how to do it...
What were the mistakes you made as a first time mum and how did you rectify it?
What about with feeding? What did you feed your child and how did you trick them into eating well, with being abusive?
You might be saving a mother from her child's drama with your comment..LOL
As an actual nutritionist I would tell you this;

Consult a professional!

Now getting advice from here isn't wrong but many people here simply have no idea what they are saying.

What I can tell you now is to breastfeed exclusively for the first 6 months of life, no formula, no solid food no water, the breast milk contains all the water they need.

If for some reason you are unable or unwilling to breastfeed, you can give the age appropriate formula mixed appropriately, you should consult with a doctor or nutritionist before making the decision to switch to formula.

At 6 months you can introduce infant cereal or a variety of soft, palatable and diverse home foods fit for babies that aren't too spicy or pungent.

Also always keep the items you use to feed your child clean and sterilise after use.

Good luck.

@Op taking care of a baby as a first time mum is tasking and at a point 'frustrating'. Just be calm about it, don't force food on your little one, take it step by step, if he rejects one food, try another...

when my DS had tummy upset, my mother-in-law told me to try this herbal leaf scent leaf.(nchawu in igbo) ,you squeeze the leaf to get the water. it work like magic

Sorry please by tummy upset do you mean colic?

Well... You can call it " forcing hunger" but remember thats partly the idea since they refused to eat like they normally should. That was why I recommended the chewables because it's more like snacks and not pure medicine or supplements as the case may be. At least it's better that force-feeding them.
No healthy hungry man would refuse to eat. Afterall, there are some races whose typical meal can not even pass as snacks here and we have not heard them die of "hunger".
These young humans are simply finding their own diet pattern when most moms have failed to find it for them.

In this part of the world, kids' are expected to eat the exact things adults eat. They don't need any multivitamin or special diet to do very well. Na make moms try fortify those seemingly little foods and watch them do well.

Moms of yesteryears force fed children, some as far as beating or blocking their airways so that they could swallow by reflex. Moms of today are forcing them to eat by stimulating hunger in them? grin cheesy

When the baby cries aat night feed and change the diapers but don't start pacing in the room and singing also use a dim light.
That way they adjust faster to night sleep..
But most important advise.. Listen to your instinct.

Yeah you're right and I also pointed that out in my initial comment that every child has what he or she likes and parents should do well to find out what it is but then again doing this requires trial and error which can be very costly considering the rate at which the price of baby food/ meals are increasing everyday. So some parents know this but are prolly considering the cost hence giving them what is available.

May God help them.

No doubts there are but what I'm saying about the cost effect is the trial and error aspect. To eventually find the one baby likes and the thought of wasting the food if peradventure the child rejecta it after first trial.

Talking about cheaper foods, can you list some at least to guide some parents here who may not know about them. I'm also learning o. So that when the time comes, me too Ill know what to go for.

Do not buy plenty clothes just 3 to 5 for the baby. They grow fast.
Yesss this advice is soo underrated.. Oftentimes we buy, buy, buy and even panic-buy things that aren't really necessary.. After getting the hospital list and seeing like 3 clothes for newborn, I was like just 3? I'd get some more o, still on it when the what if questions start coming up in my head, what if it's not enough, what if this doesn't fit so well, what if I get another colour of this same design.. Omooo×10 when my LO outgrew those clothes without even wearing 50% of them, I had to give most of them out.. A newborn wears onesies most of the time, about 3 to 5 is just about enough.. They grow up so fast and easily outgrow their clothes so it's very advisable to buy clothes, caps & socks a few months ahead, just don't buy sooo much of them..

Colic pain is a crazy one, I remember having to buy gripe water weekly cos I was literally going out of my mind, I couldn't understand why they were crying excessively and uncontrollably.. Good news is that it stops when your LO is 3-4months but that 3-4months go be like 3years..

Make sure you also check for tongue-tie, I took mine to the hospital as soon as I noticed my LO wasn't able to suckle properly.. Don't be sooo worried if your breastmilk doesn't flow almost immediately, I cried oo for 3 days, I felt bad too.. Every child reaches his/her milestones at their own pace and time, do not be overly worried that mama T's child started walking at so so so age and your precious LO hasn't.. Follow your maternal instincts, whenever you're in doubt, ask a paediatrician.. May God bless & protect us all, and our families, Amen.

Motherhood is tasking and draining. Make good Use of every help you can get. Love and take good care of your child but dont forget to take very good care of yourself and your husband. Sleep and eat well also. You need to be strong and healthy to take good care of your child.
This is very important.

Breathe.

It is tasking looking after a baby. Don't sweat it if you aren't getting things right. Always seek for help from the right source aka a paediatrician.

Learn to be assertive and trust your instincts. You will be flooded with lots of info from your mother-in-law cum other concerned relatives. Learn to say no if the info doesn't sound right to you. Some examples are
1. Massaging an enlarged baby's breast with hot water. That can introduce some infection

2. Herbal medication for tummy upset. Abdominal colic are common in babies up until 4 to 5 months of age. There is no known cure although exclusive breastfeeding, and burping can help.

3. Avoid the use of smoothie cream or its likes. Those creams are laced with very potent steroids that can knock off the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis in addition to killing off the normal skin flora.

4. I am sure you must have read that baby powders can cause female genital cancers. Best to avoid them

Again if in doubt, contact your doctor

Oh, one last thing. This is not the time to be a super mom/wife. If you are tired, sleep like your baby's life depends on it cos it literally does. I find that sleeping when baby does can help a whole lot to revitalise you, reduce postpartum depression and enhance milk production.

Someone below me just mentioned the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding. Trust me, they are 100% true.

I can go on and on but I will stop here.
I wish you would go on and on. cheesy
