No!

Believers may not necessarily speak "with A New Tongue" as evidence of infilling of the Holy Spirit. This infilling experience is erroneously tagged baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Be that as it may, every believer in Christ who seeks effectiveness in God's service to humanity will at some point have an experience similar to speaking in tongue - if not physically, it will happen in the dream.

Speaking a strange tongue understood in other climes is different from tongues to commune with God privately.

The former - a tongue understood in other climes - is a special gift given to the early church as a SIGN that Christ is risen. Has it ceased? NO!

But new tongues mentioned in 1 Cor. 12 fall under the gifting of God for service to humanity within the Church. The gift of interpretation of tongue is needed to make this gift effective. 1 Corinthians 14:22-25.

The third aspect of tongues is for private communion with God. It has nothing to do with Church service. 1 Corinthians. 14:14-15.

The confusion in the Body of Christ is due to our minds. Many believers are one track minded who swing to the extremes.

A Breakdown:

There are three dimensions to tongues.

1. Tongues understood on earth but by foreigners and in other climes. A Sign and a Gift.

2. Tongues as a gift to edify the Church. Interpretation is important for effectiveness

3. Tongues for private communication with God. It is a language of angels not understood by Man, not even the speaker.

God bless you sir, you have said it all
I am so happy seeing this your write up......

When one start asking all this question about speaking in tongues nd is it a sign?
Speaking in tongues is for every born again Christian.
If u are having issues with believing or accepting it , then check ur salvation if u are truly saved.
A natural man can't understand d things of God bcuz they are spirituality decoded.
The tendency that u are not saved is high, check out ur salvation once u start questioning spiritual things

Okay Sir

Speaking in tongues is a gift of the spirit.. Have it been abused? Yes it has.
Is speaking in tongues real? Yes it is.

The bible is a compendium of God's work with man or people and they are there for reference so as to guide, predict and teach people how God moves in a dispensation and also how God changes his dealings at intervals with generations and dispensations.

We might not be getting it entirely right if we interpret happenings now directly to the way God moved in the past. What am I saying? I'm saying that as event goes and as time passes, God changes his dealings with man and generations to suit his plans and will as at what is happening at that time.

Presently, we are in the move of God where God deals with people individually and not as group. As such, individuals are encouraged to know God for themselves and have personal encounters with God. Emphasis on personal encounters because if we do confusions as this wouldn't be in the body. The bible said "In the last days, I will pour out my spirit on all flesh....." - This means that in the last days, what used to come on selected few, what used to come on the Moses, the Samuels, the Davids, the Elijahs, will be made available to all flesh. The access to God which God used to give to very selected few will come on all flesh; old, young, women, men.. all flesh will see vision, speak in tongues and dream. All we need do is desire it with all our heart and seek it because when we seek, we find.

Speaking in tongues is the language of the spirit.. it edifies you, strengthens you and direct your spirit to pray according to God's will. 1 John 5:14 "and this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us". Praying in tongue helps your spirit direct or channel your prayer according to his will. So I am convinced it is a gift made available to anyone who genuinely desire it to help their communication with God.

To some who argued Jesus or the disciples never prayed in tongue.. can I shock you? Do you know all the while Jesus stayed with the disciples, the disciples never fasted.. Read Matthew 9:14 - 15. They dont need to do so. Jesus is one of the trinity; God the son. If the trinity are one, God the father, God the son and God the holy spirit, of what need is he (Jesus) praying in tongue when he is the language and spirit himself. He knows the mind of the father and is always in tandem with his will.

Must a believer speak in tongue? It important a believer takes advantage of all these good gift God has given us to make communion with him easier, sweet and efficient. 2 peter 1-3 "By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence"

The knowledge of God help us know this and understand his mind. As a believer, we need to activate our ability to speak and pray in tongues, it is important a believer accesses this gift.

Thanks for your brilliant contribution.

iamDrRhymes:
I used to have this roommate who was a member of one of these Pentecostal fellowships back then in campus. He had just graduated and was actually doing his clearance when I joined the room to replace him who was considerably older. So it happened one evening as we were getting to know ourselves better. He asked if I was truly born again with the evidence of speaking in tongues which I told him that I do not. He went ahead intently to tell me if I know that I can be baptized by the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongue right there in our room. Well, I must confess that I wasn't buying his idea then because I didn't know what speaking in tongues will do for me and secondly, I was of the Jehovah's Witness' stand point as I had been welcoming their teaching for years earlier.

He swiftly went to close our door from behind as he saw my readiness to give his 'Holy Spirit' a try. He prayed in tongues for while and after, he laid hands on me hoping that I will fall on the bed under his 'claimed anointing' but I could only encourage him to try harder with my theatrics. He tried and tried until I willingly granted his request and he felt better but became even more intense with his ritual. This 'Spiri koko' brother will then ask me at intervals if I have the urge to speak in an unknown tongue and I will always give him an outright 'No' till hot sweat covered us both (he must have been figuring out what could be wrong with this Pre Degree Student). After about an hour of his unyielding exercise, he just told me to speak anything that comes out my mouth without refraining myself. So for the fact that I can't wait to leave that tinny room for a deep breath of fresh air, I voluntarily granted his request again. I spoke one of these popular gibberish- 'skibobobo' .... and he said 'Yes! That is it! that's your tongue! Continue!'. He became very happy and even worshipped God for saving a soul while I was having a good laugh inside of me. After that day, he will always ask me about how many hours I have spoken in tongues each day and of course you know, I will always give it to him so as to discharge myself on time. grin

Well, the above story was a funny experience I had more than 10 years ago and to the Glory of God today, I have shredded out doctrines and believe systems that deny the power of God. However, I still question the much emphasis on speaking in tongues by many churches today.

Jesus Christ said in March 16:17-18: “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

Note that Jesus Christ made mention of other signs that will accompany those who believe, not just speaking in tongues. So why can't we have people like my former room mate say: Are you born again with the evidence of driving out demons? or with the evidence of healing the sick or any other signs mentioned in that Mark's Chapter?
‭‭

Speaking in the tongues is part of the 9 Gift of the Spirit mentioned in 1Corinthians 12:8:11. The chapter also says that the Spirit Himself give as he determines- that means that any of the 9 spiritual gifts can attest to presence of the Holy Spirit even though it is possible to operate in more than one or even all the gifts (Ephesians 1:3). Why is this singular emphasis on speaking in tongues? What happens to the gifts of interpretation of tongues? Why is the relegation of other spiritual gifts?

Infact, the gifts of tongues appear to be the least in all the 9 gift of the spirits? (Matthew 23:23) Peter never spoke in tongues before he rose the lame man at the entrance of the beautiful gate, did he? Did he speak in tongues before he rose Dorcas from the dead? Did Paul speak in tongues to restore Eutychus to life. Where exactly can we find it in the bible where signs and wonders were performed through praying in tongues?

Is it a lie that speaking in tongues has be abused or hijacked by strange spirits in the church today? You get to a church and you will see everybody muttering the same incoherent syllables in the name of speaking in tongues (Matthew 6:7). Could it be that they got their own speaking in tongues using that my formal roommates style? How does the spirit of God come upon someone who do not have the true knowledge of God? God can not be mocked! Even unbelievers already know popular lines of speaking in tongues incase they find themselves in same corner I found myself 10 years ago. You will enter a church these days and you won't even know the prayer point because nobody is or can actually interpret their 'claimed tongues' (1 Corinthians 14:28). Again, why the emphasis on speaking in tongues when other spiritual gifts like prophesy are been left unattended to?

Please note that I never said that speaking in tongues isn't real, Infact I believe in the reality of the tongues of angels because I have experienced it before (1 Corinthians 13:1) but my point here that, is speaking in tongues not just a gift amidst numerous gifts in the bible? Why will speaking in tongues be the only evidence to prove the Holy Spirit? Our emphasis as Christians should be in godly characters i.e the fruits of the spirit which are: Chastity, self control, modesty, faithfulness, gentleness, godliness, long suffering, peace, patience, kindness, joy, charity (Galatians 5:22-23). Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 7:15-20, by 'their fruits we shall know them'

Do you even know that speaking in tongues is not only a Christian phenomenon? Somethings are connecting as regards to the Christianity we practice in this age. May God grant us the spirit of discernment (1 John 4:1).

Very intresting question and valid view point.

I had a similar experience about 16years ago with a redeem pastor couple when I was leaving in Cardiff. I had a car and jejely offered to drop the car less pastor couple off at home taking the centre used for the church service was quite a walk away from town or nearest bus top. When we finally got to the car after waiting around to clear up and their post church pastoral services, they said they wanted to pray on the car for me, taking I just recently bought it. They go into prayers then tongues. Me I'm jejely muttering my English prayers. They asked if I don't speak on tongues and I'm like no. What they didn't know is I wasn't a newly converted Christian. Infact then many now pentacostal Christians come from baptist, anglican or Catholic backgrounds. But me my family had been part of the 1st wave of pentacostal Christians, they ones labelled Scripture Union (SU). So my walk as a born again Christian wasn't new. As a 10year old I used to speak in tongues, then their were periods in my teenage years where I didn't even believe in god, post teenage and around uni I on my own accord found my way back to God. No pressure, no preaching no shame!

So for some pastors to guilty trip me into faking something that was crystal clear in the bible that it isn't for all, but exclusive to some at God's remit. As you rightly quoted the Bible stated to some he gave the gift of tongues, interpretation, faith etc. Now my faith till date knows no bounds, but the pastors didn't consider that.

So they prayed and prayed and prayed but dear old me didn't break out in tongues. At last we embarked on the journey not without them ladenning me with scriptures to read and ask God for the gift. And sincerely I did, in my quite times I'd pray and ask, but nothing came to me and I wasn't going to form something in fakery. Everytime the pastors saw me, they'd ask if I've received the gift yet and each time I said no.

Months or a year later. I was seeing someone, he was Muslim but got along like a pack of cards. He lived in a different Town too, so some weekends I'd go see him but he spent most of his weekends with me. I had been away a couple of weekends back and after church this day, the husband pastor appeoa he'd me about my essence. I thought it was a good time to up about this serious relationship. So I said, yes, I been away to see my boyf. He then asked, is he a Christian (meaning born again) and I go No. He then goes into the tirade of not been unequally yolked etc. Then he asked what branch of Christianity did he practice, then I go no, he is Muslim. He then thought this wasn't a standing discussion it required sitting and digging into the books. So that we did, sat down and opened up our Bible. During this, he said 'if I may ask are you in intimate relationship with him". I could have lied but I saw no reason to do so in order to satisfy him, so I said Yes. Take it that if my father and God, the men I had the upmost respect for already knows I was having a sexual relationship with my boyf who the hell is a pastor not to know.

Anyways, as soon as I admitted yes, this man started to not just judge me but administer punishment and consequences without even consulting the god he claims to serve or represent. He said no wonder I haven't received the gift of the spirit (tongues). That I should please not help out or work in the church force anymore so the wrath of God would not come upon them. These same pastor couples had been married for 12 years then and did not have any offsprings. Would it have been fair to say perhaps some sin in their lives is why they don't have kids? Abii the god that has not fulfilled the prayers from their mouth would fulfil their prayer from then to me to speak in tongues?

Long winded story, ended marrying my boyf, I didn't even tell them or invite them to the weddeing, even though it took place in Nigeria some other church members on holiday around same period all came down for the wedding. On my return, the pastor Mrs approached me and said I heard you're married. I'm like duh, yeah. And she was like I don't think it's right for me to have told "my mother and father in the Lord" I asked who gave them appointment letter. As I can't remember endorsing any. They said by attending the church, I am invariabky their sheep, tuh! When we had our 1st son, even though they like every other church member received the text notification announcing the birth, and even though it's typical in the church to announce new births, for my child the Sunday announcement was "we do not recognise births of kids who's parents marriage is not recognised by God". That there was the straw that broke the camels back and I never returned to the church.

Met then years later at a a festival of life, pastor Mrs was all ove me, Sister T how are you? I indesatnd you have another child now etc. But there they were and still are about 25years married, yet childless and here I am, married to the person I live and adorable children and we all thriving.

Let me tell you my story.

Before I gave my life to Christ, I use to laugh when people speak in tongues, some of those tongues sounded funny in my ears, then I gave my life to Christ, I listen to sinach songs, she speaks in tongues in her songs, and the tongues are melodious in my ears, so I sing the tongues along ignorantly, then as times goes on, I will just be talking and a strange language will come out forcefully from my mouth, I didnt know I was speaking in tongues cause I was a Catholic then and most Catholic dont speak in tongues, one day I joined a prayer group on telegram, every 8pm, we pray and the anchor speak in tongues, sometimes I have the urge to laugh during the speaking in tongues, at a point I noticied that almost everybody in the group can speak in tongues except me, I started desiring the gift, so one day they gave us a prayer to pray for those that want gift of speaking in tongues, I prayed the prayer with the desire to speak it, I didnt start speaking it immediately, it was that same day during my midnight prayer, as I was standing and praying, I felt a vibration in my legs and I started speaking in tongues. The tongues I spoke then and the ones I speak now are not the same, the ones I speak now carry serious power and authority, the type that make demons tremble.

Glory!!!

Please desire the gift of praying in the holy ghost.
Jude 1:20
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.

There are some spiritual potentials you won't be able to unlock till you start praying in the holy ghost.

Very possible many have received Jesus christ in them but first consult their pastor, bishop, mama, mummy, daddy GO, etc before God through christ in them.
Jehovah witness are good in scriptural knowledge , but lack spirituality and life in christ, they are highly segregative and don't believe that God can speak to man but rather chew only the Scripture forgetting that the letter killeth but the spirit giveth life.
The only thing I admire in them is thier persistence in studying the Bible (mind you thier own translation) and evangelism (based on thier kgd publications )

I believed in many of the JW's doctrine for many years but I have come to realize that they are denying the power of God. I still appreciate them till now though and I think they are the most consistent Christian set.

it was the key gift given to the apostles on Pentecost

Speaking in other tongues isn't fake. We have genuine ones and otherwise. Interpreting other tongues is a gift from God. We still have people with such gift. I can't force myself to interpret tongues except God gifts me. I must also be sincere that there are also fake tongues too. Let God be the judge.
There are tongues that do not carry any single fire and there are tongues that make demons tremble, those tongues carry serious fire.

Also there are demonic tongues, the ones demon possessed and witches speak, we need to be spiritually discerning to know the real tongues.

Immediately even single member of the gathering started to speak in tongues, I was shock and afraid.

What a beautiful experience but the question is that must every Christian speak in tongues and an evidence of having the Holy Spirit. I know the gift of tongues is real.

Yes oo you must speak in tongues, if you want people to believe you, if you're a pastor and you cannot speak in tongues, your church business wouldn't boom ooo !! If you know you know.

Have you ever heard Pastor Kumuyi speak in tongues before? But his church is booming right?

For many are rappers in church today. I was invited to a fellowship back in 2017. I entered the gathering late but after the bible lesson the leader said we should all stand up and pray about God's word we have just heard. Immediately even single member of the gathering started to speak in tongues, I was shock and afraid.
To cut the story short the lady that invited me later on wanted to force speaking in tongues on me. But me o gba fun.

Hahahaha!

it was the key gift given to the apostles on Pentecost
it is the apex reason why the spreading of the word was possible

I need a bible reference to substantiate your point.

There are tongues that do not carry any single fire and there are tongues that make demons tremble, those tongues carry serious fire.

Also there are demonic tongues, the ones demon possessed and witches speak, we need to be spiritually discerning to know the real tongues.

Exactly!

Can you give me a scriptural basis for your conclusion?

And can you please explain the difference between
1. Having the Holy Spirit
2. Being Filled with the Holy Spirit
3. Having the gift of Tongues

Seconded!

Paul in 1st Corinthians say....

I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

Very simple and straightforward...
Apostle Paul speak in tongues a lot ....
For him to have done it more than anyone....

The tongue as talking about in the chapter was purely language. Paul was a multi lingual envengalist that was why he did more exploit than any apostle. You are wrong on this one.

Read from verse 1
For anyone who speaks in a tongue [1] does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.
