Is that how you compare things?
who much are the min wages in both countries?

Not relevant. The optimal situation is to work there, but live here; which is exactly what the op is pointing out. Otherwise, the standard of life in both countries is not that different.

is it just me but as of recent

There are some big boys in Lagos , owerri, PH that some people who come from abroad can never compete with

Like on a friday night, Eko hotel would be fully booked up and i am wondering how many working class Nigerians living in the US can come to Nigeria on holiday and spend recklessly like that without thinking twice

Same with UK folks too before they buy anything in Nigeria they have already converted it

All of a sudden some Lekki apartments are more expensive than some London homes that is more than 500 years old

And there is still insane poverty in nigeria and in lagos at the same time too

So its so unexplaniable what is going on

You can't compare a small fraction of people getting with the calamity going on in the land.

u re wrong bro, if u don't know something pls don't misinform people. Food over there re the cheapest and affordable thing u can get. It is necessity that u eat and food is not a problem. The problem we re having in this country is that the basic things of is hard to get and it's unavailable. If government provide all this wan go overseas. yea electric bills re high but it's available, gas is high but it's available, good road connection with no hassle, u ve credit access, the more u work the more ur pay so pls don't compare at all. The system works there but here the system is not functioning. My advice to people is that if u are opportune to move pls do, when u get there u will be amazed am talking from experience.

I know what I'm talking about. I've lived and worked in the UK and I have cousins in the US whom I've stayed with for sometime. Food is not the only necessity. Housing, medical bills, utility bills are all necessary as well. And food isn't that cheap. An average family of five will spend not less than $2k a month. That's about a million naira. If one leaves one's family back home in Nigeria and sends them that million a month, do you know the kind of standard of living they will have? Let alone rent, electricity, medical fees etc. As the OP said, it's much better to go alone, work for a couple of years, send funds back home, build a house and open a thriving business, then head back here for an early retirement.

In comparison to what, a place where things are cheap but people could barely afford it?

There are poor people who can barely afford to eat everywhere. At least in Nigeria, we have a family and friends support system. In the US or Europe, if you are jobless, no one will look at you twice until you die of hunger.

What do you mean when I do my math right?
I've live my life, earned my salary and married my wife and you didn't pay for any of that for me. So what are you teaching me?

-
The reward system in UK is not fantastic either. That's why you always see them drinking beer, getting drunk and committing suicide.
Do you know how many times I went to church and it's only me that is the young guy there? The others are 60, 70 years.
Young people just be working, working, working in UK. Work finish and drink and get drunk.
They take credit card and student loans.
Spend the money anyhow then be owing £20,000 student debt.
That must be paid back and it sends all of them into depression.
The only way to escape it is to run to Australia.
If they remain in EU, the debt will follow them and mess up their credit rating.
When they get a job, government will chook hand and collect that debt back monthly, for years.
Me that went with my Nigerian money, I wasn't owing their government anything. But they still collected tax from the small student job that I did.
-
Sincerely, I spent many hours praying and meditating and asking myself, what am I really gaining in this UK?
I'm seeing the money, but it is disappearing faster and faster as well.

Check out student debt videos on Youtube.

As a Nigerian, are you owning anybody for your school fees?
Shey your parents just paid everything complete for you?
That life is not about earning a salary and marrying a wife, that's like what everybody does. What's Unique or there to learn in such basic kind of life?

You starting working as a student and you have to pay tax, and you want to make a big deal of that? Complaining about tax is silly except is for reason like you feel the government is using your tax money to wage war on a weaker country.

This is the 21 century youth are not very religious in developed country, wetin wan carry them come church when they know that money (a tool) would solve most of their problem they are not thinking about eternity in heaven. Unlike Nigeria where citizens pray for water and light.

After meditating hope you are now back to Nigeria?

Are you referring to Nigeria cheap education that doesn't translate to any transferable skills that rander the person unemployable not to talk of the lack of proper Jobs available.

YOU MAY AGREE OR DISAGREE.

A 100K monthly salary earner in Nigeria is better than a 400K monthly salary earner in the United States.

The luxury lifestyles some of us live here with 100K, cannot sustain us a day over there. We can’t try such in US and save a dim.

Some of our annual rent here is weekly/ monthly rent over there. Can you pay over 100K naira monthly house rent with 400K monthly salary here in Nigeria? You can’t do that, but you don’t have a choice over there. You pay or kicked out of the house.

Some of our people over there are becoming wiser now. They don’t mind sleeping on the streets, work for at least 5-10yrs, move back to Nigeria with their savings. You cannot survive with 100M living comfortably a year over there. Tax go finish you up. But you can live large with 100M for 5yrs or more here in Nigeria depends on your lifestyles tho.

You don’t pay unnecessary tax here. But in foreign countries you pay almost everything.
In naija you can own 10 cars..not in the United States because you pay for packing space for each car. You get the point now?

Some of our people in diaspora, once they earn $10K in a month or so, depends on the job, they’d send $9K down to their Nigeria account and keep $1K for their upkeep. Some would buy lands and build houses for rent or some other businesses.
If you don’t do that, you’d work all your life and come back with nothing. Those of you on this method are wise. But becareful of the people you send your money to here. Trust no one! Get a trustworthy lawyer involved.

U can make unnecessary noise or play loud music here. You can’t try such over there and not find yourself in police cell.

So you see….We are privileged here. We only need to get bad political leaders off the way. By getting involved in politics, national, state, LGA and community affairs. That’s how American youth you admire, do.

They don’t just fold hands, wailing and waiting for a miracle. They debate, disagree, challenge, involved and create. You get the point now?
. If you are earning 100k monthly in Nigeria can you buy a used Toyota Camry 1998 model if you work for 35 yrs? Talkless of building a two bedroom apartment. Rubbish comparison.

HOW WOULD I EXPLAIN TO MY MUM THAT MY MONTLY RENT IS I MILLION NAIRA. MY ANNUAL RENT IS 12MILLION NAIRA IN USA. it is well!!

That's because our naira has been bastardized.

Moreso the N1m of the year 2005 is not the N1m of today. It is only significant in your bank account, the moment you start spending it, you will discover it does not last long.

So 100k can give u luxury in Nigeria? Has d meaning of d word "luxury" changed?

Not exactly luxury; that was an exaggeration, but certainly a better standard of living than you can get on a thousand dollars a month in the US for example. With N100k monthly, at least you can maintain a car, rent a flat and eat decently in Nigeria. No way is that going to happen in the US with less than $1000 ((N400k) monthly, which is what the op said.

Let's say you live in a self contain 150k - 180k
Keep 15k per month for rent
R = 85k
- normal savings 10k
R = 75k
- TP (4h per day) 12k
R = 63k
- call credit (1h per day stingy) 3k
R = 60k
- NEPA + fuel 10k
R = 50k
- Food 5k per week 20k
R = 30k
Provisions (toothpaste, beverages etc) 10k
R = 20k

The above is basic

20k remains for the "luxury" below

Water money
Uncle buy me biscuit
Send money to buy drugs for mama
Some drinks
Sweetheart mumu button (urgent 2k)
New shirt and trousers
New (ok) shoes

It's not that the standard is wholistically better regardless of how much you make. I don't think that is what the op is saying. Nor I. But there are opportunities for entrepreneurship here that you cannot get there, if only you have your initial funding. And relocating your whole family there is a gross waste of money, money which can be put to better purpose establishing a less expensive nest egg here. Once you have set up and are making enough here, there is nothing that you can enjoy there that you cannot also enjoy here, so at a point, they are equal.

Before foolishly comparing Nigeria to America and shouting Nigeria is doomed... cursed etc... we need to begin by asking ourselves how many years ago America became independent.... and how many years did Nigeria become independent. It doesn't mean we should take that number of years to reach where they are... we should learn from their mistakes and discoveries. What is more important is for us to ask ourselves why they have good leaders and everything seems to be in order. The answers are in the quote above. Those who are responsible for bad governance and looting are not the ones sitting in Aso Rock..... look in the mirror and we will see the perpetrators... the ones that give them the power.

A homeless man in the US is safer than a rich man in nigeria

Nonsense

Do the writers and supporters know anything about purchasing power parity and standard of living? You can't compare lime with coconut, compare lime with lime.

In Zamfara, you can live on 20k, but in Abuja 100k cannot pay your rent in Central area. Is the standard of living, safety, quality of hospitals and amenities the same?

Now would you prefer Zamfara just because you can live there with 20k?

Do you know how many NGO jobs are in Zamfara, Borno and Yobe that no one wants to take?

Nonsense comparison. Keep consoling yourself if you can't get alternatives to the Nigerian suffering, I feel you
