We had our class of civilisation, we were Republican, were there ever an empire in Nigeria, what you had is kingdoms, so you would call the Benin kingdom an empire, did it have an emperor or empress, if you call Britain an empire, then Aro confedracy was an empire, becuase there was no official empire in The west African region today known as Nigeria

no empire in Nigeria grew as wide as the aro Confederacy....

We all know about the Hausa empire, the fulani empire, the benin empire, the Old oyo empire and their heros, we all hear about the history of some of their heros, we hear about usman dan fudio, Afonja, queen aminat, Sango and how they went to battle against other empires and defeated them.

But something amazes me, i have never heard about any igbo empire, never heard about any igbo hero, never heard about any igbo wars. other empires organized wars against the colonists, they resisted and fought until they were subdued, never read any resistance of the colonists by the igbos.

The only war, we know the igbos fought was the civil war in which they were defeated by NIGERIA.

The only igbo hero i know was a fictional one in Chinue Achebe book, Okonkwo in things fall apart.

This is something to ponder about, please if you know any igbo empire or any igbo hero, mention them, i am curious.

There was no democracy in old igbo land.

There were different unorganised igbo clans scattered in many places. That is why monarchy system couldn't take place.

Every organised civilization had a monarchy, even the Egyptians had a monarchy, the greek had one etc.

In the igbo culture, The head of the house or the clan was the sole ruler( dictator)

No election was ever organised in old igbo land even till today, no election is held when selecting a clan leader, it is mostly by senority.

pure lies. We had the 'umunnas'. Read well.

Mr. I have been laughing since I saw your post. Reason because you are not a student of history. If your are a historian you wouldn't have made this post in the first place.

First and foremost there is nothing like Hausa Empire or Fulani Empire anywhere in the World. The first person that came up with Hausa Empire and Fulani Empire is you and you alone. Also there's nothing like Igbo Empire.

Second the only Empires known in the history of the Sahel and lower Niger are the following: The Kanem-Bornu Empire, The Benin Empire and the Oyo Empire. Oyo Empire and Benin Empires were semi-empires and were dubbed the forest Kingdoms. The only Empire formed by Fulani was the Tekruur Empire in far away Senegal. No Fulani Empire existed in Nigeria. The Fulani Founded the Sokoto Caliphate in 1804 after a jihad that subdued the Hausa Kingdoms. The Caliphate was dismantled by the British in 1903. The Ancient and most organized Empire in the North is the Kanem-Bornu Empire and it was not a Hausa Empire, it was formed by the Bornu people of the lake Chad Basin. They are now in Cameroun, Lake Chad Basin and North East Nigeria. They were ruled by the Mai(s) I can recall Mai Dunama I and Mai Dunama II. Then, in the Lower Niger were the Kingdoms of Benin and Kingdom of Biafar(Biafar) Op what we have today as Bight of Bonny was actually Bight of Biafra in the 17th Century map of Africa.

Later on the Hausa Knigdoms emerged with the most notable Monarch, Queen Amina. They were subdued by the Jihadists from Senegal who established the Sokoto Caliphate. Kaduna still retains the head of Political Arewa land, because of Zaria, While Sokoto is the Islamic Religious head of Arewa land. The Sultan presides from Sokoto, while the political head was in Kaduna...where Ahmadu Bello presided as Premier.

The lower Niger was made up of the Kingdom of Biafar, and was made up of other tiny kingdoms, The Aro Kingdom, the Igbo-Ukwu Kingdom, the Opobo kingdom etc. Now op you said you don't know any Kingdom of Igbo extraction? the Kingdom of Opobo was it in Eastern Kenya? or Eastern Brazil? You don't know any Hero of Igbo extraction who resisted the British. Is king Jaja of Opobo from Arewa land? Before you say Opobo is not Igbo, and not in Eastern Nigeria. I have been to Opobo, they are partly in Abia State and Rivers State. They are minority in Rivers. Every toddler in Abia State around Ogbor Hill, will even take you to Opobo jucntion, you will take a bike to Ndoki land and Opobo. Opobo people told me that they ought to be in Abia State. That's why Rivers State neglected them. Governor Orji Uzor Kalu fought to bring them back together with Obigbo but all his attempts were futile. The military who created the states caused a lot of confusion and removed many communities from their ancestral home lands. Jaja of Opobo was a slave boy from Nkwerre in present day Imo State.

Let me just wait till your post makes front page. Then I will counter your thread and dismantle your yeye claims. I have not even entered my library to make some research and bombard your nonsense with missiles from both ancient and modern history of the African continent, especially the Sahel and sub Sahara regions.

Tobrasky:
The true making of greatness is decided when people can fight against oppression and yet practice a civilized system of republicanism without sheepishly following some barbaric "emperor" around. There's a reason why the Igbos are celebrated today globally (especially in the USA, Carribeans, and parts of South America and Europe) were trans-athlantic slavery were most prominent. The most popular slave rebellions and leaders who led uprisings to usurp the slave ships, plantations etc and wipe out the white slave masters were mostly Igbo or were of Igbo origin... the most successful slave rebellion in black history ( Haiti revolution) were instigated and led by many Igbo self-liberated slaves. The Bussa rebellion in today's Barbados which is the largest uprising in Barbadian history was led by a freed slave by name of Bussa (who was of Igbo heritage)... needless to mention the much celebrated Igbo landing which has become a source of pop culture and renaissance in the fabric of black consciousness across the United States. Where I'm I going with all of this? it's quite simple, Igbos hate oppression, we're not a sheepish people who bow down to just any man, you've got to earn that leadership and trust by your proven records and qualities. The greatest black abolitionist today is Igbo (Olaudah Equiano).

Igbos didn't need an empire to produce beautiful artworks like Igbo Ukwu. Igbo-Ukwu is notable for three archaeological sites, where excavations have found bronze artifacts from a highly sophisticated bronze metal-working culture dating to 9th century AD, centuries before other known bronzes of the region.

We didn't need an empire to resist the British colonial forces for 34 years in the Ekumeku war fought by the Western Igbos and their Aro allies... today the Ekumeku resistance has become the blueprint of research into African resistance against colonialism in many British libraries and research institutes today.

We didn't need an empire to have a powerful theocratic civilization in the Nri kingdom, and without war and subjugation the Nri civilization had a greater sphere of impact on most so called empires like the Benin kingdom etc.

Meanwhile the Oyo empire was once sacked by the Nupe and Fulani alike, under the very watch of the Oyo empire Ilorin fell to the Fulani, and the status quo remains the same till date. The so called empire also failed to stop the yorubas from butchering each other for years in the Kiriji wars, so much that the yorubas had to beg British to come colonize them after they had become so disorganized and vulnerable.

The Benin kingdom abi "empire" fell to the British forces in just 2 days or so of fighting with all their artifacts plundered and looted, and the their King sent into exile where he lived out the rest of his days.

Essentially the only effective empire in Nigeria was the Karnem-Bornu empire, then at large the British empire of modern times remains the greatest and most significant empire... of course we had other great empires like the Songhai, Mali, Kingdom of Aksum, Ethiopia etc

...stop twisting history to fit your narrative and you guys should stop abusing people when responding it makes people see you as uncivilized individuals who can not have a conversation without getting emotional. you are supposed to showcase your history no matter how big or small. sell the truth no matter how small in time people would love and appreciate it. Afonja story with Alimi is the most regretable to the Yorubas on every angle but we are not going to twist the history to get sympathy or bragging right.
