It's cheaper for single individuals who don't eat heavily.

For people who eat lightly once or twice daily, buying out might be cheaper... but only in comparison to local bukaterias.

If they want to eat from places like Mega Chicken, The Place or Radisson Blu, then of course cooking is way more affordable.

On point. Depends on where you eat, but generally speaking, it is probably cheaper to cook the same exact meal you eat outside. It helps if ypu can cook large portions and preserve them.

I will say it depends on the quantity and quality of the food. There is this place I buy afang soup, they sell a small takeaway plate @ about N4500. With delivery is approx N5500. Now would I not cook a good pot of afang soup of about 1l with N4500 and eat it many times? That is assuming I have the basic ingredients sha.

For me, I also consider the energy and time involved- that is what makes it expensive to always cook at home. Sometimes I just order out to save myself stress abeg.

Anyway, I noticed na poor people chop outside pass o. Whenever I am braiding my hair in those roadsides hairdressers, I will watch the woman buy N100 rice for her kids.

We should also consider the fact that many Nigerians do not have bulk money to use and cook a single meal. Soup wey them no even get light/refrigerator to preserve.

I think it is healthier, but not always cheaper.

How can a plate of afang be sold for a whooping #4500??

I use barely #3500 to prepare a standard pot of afang with plenty esam and cowhead pomo and fleshy stockfish with assorted meats to go with....

Buy and cook, nobody is stopping you. You can even start a food delivery business and sell yours for N1500. People wey wan buy from you go buy.

Anti, No be fight oh...

Was just curious how a plate will go for #4500... As in a plate? Even Transcorp hotels sold a plate of afang way below #4500.

One bag of 25kg rice costs #12000 and it lasts me 6 months as a single person. I cook rice twice weekly.

To cook tomato stew costs me #2000

#2000 gas refill lasts me 2 months.

CALCULATE
#12,000÷48 times = #250 per cooking which is about 5 plates. 1 plate = #50.

#2500 ÷ 8 plates of stew = #312 a plate. NB Meat alone is #1500.

#2000 ÷ 60days of usage = #33 per cooking. 1 plate should be about #6.

So 50+312+6= #368 a plate for my own cooking.

Average cost of a plate of rice outside = #500.
So OP home cooking is still cheaper and more satisfying no matter what.

Modified: My plate na big plate o. E fit be two plates outside. So be the judge.

Poverty is real in this country.

Those guys with 4 children will receive $1400*4=$5600
$600 *4 = $2400
$500 *4 =$2000
Palliative = $10000
then tax-return in each child $2000, 4 children = $8000

Total = $18000,

As for me oooooooo eating outside is a lost of destiny, we most people as lost our Glory by eating outside , because in Nigerian's many food seller's use juju on there food. So is better and saver to cook indoor for yourself than to buy outside, am talking from experience ni ooooo.

I am very occupied and I wouldn't want to venture into delivery business.....

Cooking is very stressful and I cook when madam isn't around or when she's tired and probably not feeling too well or when I read your recipes and decides to spice things up...

That being said, lemme go to your profile and look for what to cook this weekend against Monday to Wednesday.

You didn’t add transportation cost, sevice charge - washing of plates, water, pots, etc. Also add manpower per hour used in cooking

The point exactly. Food delivery is a very serious business on the Island because they assume you are occupied with making money and can’t find the time to cook. Except you order from those fast foods that will give you 1/2 spoons of soup- no nice restaurant would carry her food and dash you at a giveaway price. Rent is high and they all want to buy Benz too. Anyone that has the time and energy should go into it, there is money to be made.

Enjoy Sir. Me sef haven’t been cooking aggressively. I am occupied and tired. grin

It is not cheaper, per se. The only thing is that you eat more if you cook. But you definitely spend more money, anyway.

Yes, cooking large portions help. But trust me, if you have a reliable buka that stills rice 100 naira, meat 50 naira, etc... that kind of place, eating out will always be more affordable for a single person.

You get to eat variety... rice, beans/moi-moi, dodo, assorted cheesy Do you know the time and cost it would take to fix that yourself?

Are there still places that you can find rice 100, meat 50 and be satisfied, even with the way inflation has accelerated over the last few years?

On affordability, interestingly, I still think cooking will be more affordable. If you buy rice, cook and eat the same number and size of meals, and also buy meat and cut them into similar sizes, you'll probably find cooking cheaper. And then, you also use cheap materials, cheap fuel (kerosene or something cheaper)., etc.

At the end of the day, it is possible to cook cheaplt, but convenience will probably be sacrificed. I guess that's part of what we pay for when we eat out.

Well, I don't know if there are still places that sell food at 100 per portion, but there must certainly still be 200 per portion. Cooking in small portions is a chore. I don't even know how to.

Convenience is a critical factor... it's why some people would very quickly buy that go through the hassles. Believe you me, many of these bachelors buy food outside more than they eat home cooked meals.

Nigerians always believe home cooked food is cheaper than eating in a restaurant. But is it true?
I understand it may be so for a large family, but for a single person is it really cheaper?

If we stick to strictly cost and not variable factors like washing pant water grin cheesy or unhygienic environment.

It is cheaper and safer (you know you're eating and how it was made).

Lol. Culprit! Back then when I first moved down to Lagos, for about 3 months, I was buying more than I was cooking because I hadn't gotten a fridge and couldn't imagine cooking everyday or dutifully warming food morning and night.

So I'll buy lunch at work.. Ikota Shopping Complex had some restaurants that sold affordable meals... I'll also buy extra for dinner when I close from work. It was honestly convenient and affordable. But that was some years ago...

Lol.. Yeah. During the full lockdown I had to cook and it was fun to an extent.. However, cooking takes an unfair amount of time (and it was worse because I had not cooked in a long while).. Eating out is much more convenient, and for 1 person, also affordable. Sometimes, a part of me wants to cook but I'm just too used to ordering/stepping out.
