A catalytic converter has everything to do with fuel economy. Fuel economy and catalytic converter are inseparable twins. That's why every catalytic converter has at least one 02 sensor. Some even have as much as 4 02 sensor attachment.

Too late ma'am. Mine had been stolen. I am looking to replace it.

uote author=HottieCoach post=99951169]A catalytic converter is a device incorporated in the exhaust system of a motor vehicle, containing a catalyst for converting pollutant gases into less harmful ones.

This device had been available in vehicles since the 1970's

The catalyst's job is to speed up the removal of pollution. The catalyst is made from platinum or a similar, platinum-like metal such as palladium or rhodium. A catalytic converter is a large metal box, bolted to the underside of your car, that has two pipes coming out of it.

The catalytic converter is very valuable because of the precious metals that are included in the converter, such as platinum, or platinum-like material such as palladium or rhodium. So, the more expensive the material, the more expensive it is to replace.

Due to the fall of the naira and a rise in the cost of precious metals like platinum and palladium, the contents of the catalytic converter is highly sort after. The parts have become an unusual windfall for thieves, who can make hundreds of naira from selling them to auto parts suppliers or scrapyards. Catalytic converters can be melted and the highly valuable metals, like palladium and rhodium, extracted.

At present a typical 2003-2018 Toyota Corolla catalytic converter (its content) can fetch between ₦100,000 -150,000.

How to prevent catalytic converter theft.

1 Do not leave your vehicle unattended with your roadside technician.

2. If you do, tell him bluntly that you have your catalytic converter intact and it should not go missing .

3. If for any reason you have catalytic converter failure and it has to be unblocked , collect all the contents, tie it up in a bag and contact me I'll show you where to sell it for good money cheesy

It does affect fuel consumption cos of improper conversion and damage to other components

Catalytic converters make sure reactive exhaust gases (particularly CO) get completely burned before being sent out the tailpipe. Anything in the exhaust path causes resistance, and thus requires a bit of energy to push the gases through — which is also true of your muffler. This energy has to come from somewhere, and it comes from the pumping action of the piston on the exhaust stroke. The piston, in turn, is powered by the air-fuel mixture, so making the piston do more work means the engine consumes more fuel, not less.

Mechanics are the worst set of artisans . It is no wonder their lives continue to be impoverished. Just when you trust them with your car, they hit you hard. No matter how much you pay them for labour, they must steal or cheat on parts. So pathetic.

atomic number of pall-a-dium is 46 which tells me it is a generator. and so it is a generator of death in carbon beings and if ths stuff is stolen from your car in the west its because someone wants to poison someone but doesnt want to buy poison fromthe store because they have CCTV everywhere and you will be fished out if you bought poison from a store.

atomic number of Rho 7-dium is 45 which tells me it can end your life pata pata . potent poison

both of these elements can be used to induce cancer in people

Word on the street says it is called the indomie . It is quite expensive.
My tip: stay with your Mechanic /Panel beater when getting your car fixed. Also, know how your car sounds.

I once gave my painter my 4Runner V8 to paint. He came and took the car in the morning, later in the day, at about 7pm, someone who knows the car belongs to me, called & alerted me that my painter in connivance with a panel beater are trying to remove my catalytic converter. Luckily I was around that evening, less than 5 minutes I was there with my cousin. I got their and saw my painter & panel beater under my car doing their thing. They had burnt off few of the bolts cause they couldn't lose untie them due to rust. So I had evidence. But lucky for me, they've not removed it. That night, both slept in the cell, I got the p9lice to lock them up. Funny thing is that the DPO I reported to said his uncle also went through the same thing, unfortunately he did not discover until after 3 weeks.

Now some tips to guide you.

1. Always know the sound of your car.
2. When you start you car in the morning, let it run for at least 10 minutes. You will see water dropping from the exhaust.
3. The effluent from your exhaust pipe has a kind of unique smell/aroma, if you stand close to you exhaust pipe, you could perceive the smell.
4. There should be less carbon soot in your exhaust pipe if your catalyst is still intact. You can check by dipping your finger into the exhaust pipe, you should notice if your finger is slightly black or very black with carbon soot.

Implications of driving without catalyst.

1. Without the catalyst, your car consumes more fuel.

2. Your cylinder heads won't last.

3. Your oxygen (O2) sensors will quickly burn out.

4. Black smoke from your exhaust when you accelerate your car.

After long term protection of my catalyst, the stupid mechanic still find way of removing my catalyst. First, he told me the catalyst is damaged and it's blocking my exhaust that's why I was having low economy, in a bid to improve my fuel economy, I agreed he get it removed, he did in collaboration with a panel beater, I trusted the idiot, left my car with him, went back to work, lo and behold my catalyst has been removed. When I demanded for the waste I was shown something like dark soil, I felt it was bad and didn't touch it, I later got to know that the one they remove is as high as 100k. I was mad when I heard this, went straight to the mechanic to retrieve the small quantity that he claimed was left, I was shocked when that quantity was bought 25k from me, in annoyance with myself how I got scammed, I sold my car so as not to be reminded by the bad incidence.

I understand that they help in economizing fuel consumption.
The catalytic converter system through the 02 sensors attached to it supplies real-time information to your vehicle's main ECU which it uses to determine the lean/rich mixture situation needed at the combustion chamber at every point the engine is working. Example, If the 02 sensor detects exhaust gas with possibly unburnt fuel, then it sends that info to the ECU which means your engine is having a rich mixture at the combustion chamber, so the ECU responds accordingly by automatically reducing the amount of fuel being sprayed by the injector nozzles into the combustion chamber to counter the rich mixture, and vice versa. But if your catalytic converter system is bad, the ECU will either use the last info relayed to it by the 02 catalyst system or it will assume whatever figures it thinks is suitable. And this will result in bad rich/lean mixture situations and it will cause poor fuel economy, and later on could lead to engine damage and transmission problems due to the ECU not getting it right with how fuel should be mixed at the combustion chamber, one time too many.
