Most catalytic converters are stolen at the port before they even get to the buyers. My friend had a similar experience.

I was told that once it is removed from a car, fuel consumption goes up. I don't know the correlation though...

Nigerians are mumu ICE car is a total waste of money zero efficiency compare to electric car go green and stop polluting the world 60 percent of your gasoline is been wasted as smoke in combustion

Electric car offer the best efficiency and zero maintenance only tires

One electric car will buy 4 regular gasoline cars. There are currently no used electric cars for sale , Nigerians import used cars.

shocked But you now Rho7-dium and Pall-a-dium just by their names are killers of Carbon atomic number 6 and since we are carbon beings i suspect these things are also stolen to make poisonous substance to kill humans or rodents. these are radioactive carbon being killers just from the etymology of the names.

atomic number of pall-a-dium is 46 which tells me it is a generator. and so it is a generator of death in carbon beings and if ths stuff is stolen from your car in the west its because someone wants to poison someone but doesnt want to buy poison fromthe store because they have CCTV everywhere and you will be fished out if you bought poison from a store.

atomic number of Rho 7-dium is 45 which tells me it can end your life pata pata . potent poison

both of these elements can be used to induce cancer in people

Words from panel beaters say they use it to make bullets for guns...

And that is even for some Cars that can mange the loss well... A friend who drives a 2010 Honda Civic went through hell till he replaced it himself. Strange things started happening to the Car, from overheating to smoking exhaust and sm other stuffs till it was scanned and changing the catalyst was the only thing that brought the Car back to normal

Asides the pollution it causes to the atmosphere, does it also affect fuel consumption?

I heard if removed from a vehicle, fuel economy gets reduced.. How true is this?

Fuel consumption is is not really directly affected. It's mostly psychological

My 2003 CRV still consumes fuel crazily even after changing the catalytic converter.

Pls what is the solution?
HottieCoach:
A catalytic converter is a device incorporated in the exhaust system of a motor vehicle, containing a catalyst for converting pollutant gases into less harmful ones.

This device had been available in vehicles since the 1970's

The catalyst's job is to speed up the removal of pollution. The catalyst is made from platinum or a similar, platinum-like metal such as palladium or rhodium. A catalytic converter is a large metal box, bolted to the underside of your car, that has two pipes coming out of it.

The catalytic converter is very valuable because of the precious metals that are included in the converter, such as platinum, or platinum-like material such as palladium or rhodium. So, the more expensive the material, the more expensive it is to replace.

Due to the fall of the naira and a rise in the cost of precious metals like platinum and palladium, the contents of the catalytic converter is highly sort after. The parts have become an unusual windfall for thieves, who can make hundreds of naira from selling them to auto parts suppliers or scrapyards. Catalytic converters can be melted and the highly valuable metals, like palladium and rhodium, extracted.

At present a typical 2003-2018 Toyota Corolla catalytic converter (its content) can fetch between ₦100,000 -150,000.

How to prevent catalytic converter theft.

1 Do not leave your vehicle unattended with your roadside technician.

2. If you do, tell him bluntly that you have your catalytic converter intact and it should not go missing .

3. If for any reason you have catalytic converter failure and it has to be unblocked , collect all the contents, tie it up in a bag and contact me I'll show you where to sell it for good money cheesy

OP
Good post!
So from the writeup can we conclude that catalytic converter has nothing to do with fuel efficiency/economy...

1000% true sir. A faulty catalytic converter or no catalyst will result in higher fuel consumption or lower mpg value. A faulty 02 sensor attached to the catalytic converter can also do this. You will get lower mpg fuel consumption.

I sent my car to my painter, it came back sounding like a v8 , I suspected something was wrong , took it to my panelbeater, he inspected and told me the catalytic converter under the car was stolen. I picked up the painter, at the end he spent ₦200,000 getting a Toks catalytic converter for my corolla

You can also get this product if you don't want to buy a catalyst.
