__________________________ THE BUREAU __________________________ The strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Educational Institutions (NASU) has been prolonged for another month. On Thursday, April 21, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the two unions released a statement to that effect. The decision was made after the Nigerian government's persistent silence over the unions' requests, according to a statement signed by SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi. The new development, they added, was the result of a directive to JAC from members across the country's universities. "You will recall that the first two-week warning strike began at midnight on Sunday, March 27, 2021, and that the extension of another two weeks, which began on Sunday, April 10, 2022, would end at midnight on Sunday, April 24, 2022," the statement stated in part. "Unfortunately, the administration has remained silent and unresponsive to the requests of the NASU and SSANU JACs. "Based on feedback received from our branches regarding the resolutions passed, which fully supported the ongoing strike and other actions to be taken by the leadership of JAC, this is to inform members that the strike has been extended by one month and will begin at midnight on Sunday, April 24th, 2022, pending when the government will have a change of heart and be more favorable to our demands as outlined in our letters dated March 1st, 2022 and March 16th, 2022."What they want: The renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, payment of earned allowances, usurpation of non-academic career positions by vice-chancellors, inclusion of university staff school into the university community, non-payment of minimum wage arrears, and funding of state universities are among the items in the said agreement, according to Abdussobur Salaam, SSANU's national vice president. He claimed that university vice-chancellors had continued to ignore a court judgment declaring that staff school teachers are vital members of the university community. He went on to say that the government has only paid N8 billion of the N30 billion it pledged to pay as allowances to its members across the country. "We agreed in our memorandum of agreement that the renegotiation would be completed in six weeks." That was in February 2021, by the way. And if you count back six weeks from that day, we'll be talking about May or possibly April. But, despite repeated reminders, we have yet to be invited to a single conference a year later," he added in an interview. The confusion The unexpected development may have shattered Nigerian university students' hopes of returning to class soon. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the union's academic counterpart, began its strike on February 14, 2022, and has continued to roll it over, with the most recent extension set to finish on May 14. However, there is no chance that the UU will return to the classrooms in May because the union and the government are still at odds. Various stakeholders have pressed the Nigerian government and striking unions to reach an agreement and reopen the universities. However, the education minister, Adamu Adamu's, continuing silence has enraged the people, with many Nigerians taking to social media to demand his dismissal. Source |
___________________ THE BUREAU ___________________ https://i0.wp.com/thebureau.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/covid-19.jpg?w=1420&ssl=1 After weeks of lockdowns in Shanghai, foreign businesses are trying to rehire staff as the country confronts its largest Covid epidemic since the pandemic began. After over a month of Covid restrictions in Shanghai, businesses in the United States and Europe report that only about half of their employees are allowed to return to work.Shanghai is the third most industrialized province in China. From the southern metropolis of Shenzhen to the northern province of Jilin, mainland China has enforced travel restrictions and stay-at-home orders since March. Covid controls have varying degrees of effectiveness depending on the location. Lockdowns in Shanghai, China's southeastern metropolis, began in late March, 2022 and have been among the most disruptive - to daily life as well as foreign enterprises and supply lines. The city is home to the world's busiest port and accounts for around 3.8 percent of China's GDP. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology stated on Friday that it has dispatched a team to Shanghai. Prioritizing the restoration of work at 666 significant enterprises in industries like as chips, biopharma, and auto and equipment manufacture, according to the government. According to Bettina Schoen-Behanzin, the chamber's vice president and Shanghai chair, a "substantial" number of members of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China are on the whitelist, particularly in the manufacturing, chemicals, and auto industries. However, "many enterprises continue to confront labor shortages and logistical difficulties," she said in a statement, estimating that just about 30% of members' personnel is eligible to return to work owing to the lockdowns. If a factory is on the list, it can resume operations if workers live on-site and interaction is limited to persons who have valid negative virus tests – a practice known as "closed-loop management" in the area. According to Matthew Margulies, senior vice president of China operations for the US-China Business Council, "some estimate that with the re-opening whitelist, the requirements to achieve closed-loop status may not be attainable, or maybe can only recall 30-40 percent of staff back to manufacturing facilities." Companies can't readily bring in new staff for other shifts since it's tough to get workers into factories, according to international business associations. Prior to the publishing of the list, several enterprises in Shanghai and other Covid-controlled areas were able to sustain minor operations via closed-loop methods. When corporations try to hire new employees, they often "fail with local populations who don't want to allow people out," according to Johan Annell, a partner at Asia Perspective, a consultancy firm that predominantly works with Northern European companies operating in East and Southeast Asia. THE BUREAU ____________ MultiChoice Nigeria, the owners of DSTV and GoTV last month increased the subscription rates for both DSTV and GoTV, a move that did not go down well with Nigerians and the government. MultiChoice sited increase in the cost of goods and services for the price review. MultiChoice had within four years increased the subscription fees for GoTV and DSTV twice. An email from The Bureau to MultiChoice did not get any response even as at the time of filing this report. Recall that the Nigerian Senate had last week ordered MultiChoice to revert the subscription fees of both DSTV and GoTV to the old rates. But as at the time of filing this report, a quick check by The Bureau on DSTV’s website confirmed that the new prices still stands. https://i0.wp.com/thebureau.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/DSTV-Prices.png?resize=480%2C197 The Federal Competition & Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) last month ordered MultiChoice Nigeria Limited to increase the number of times all subscribers may suspend their subscription. FCCPC in a statement by its Director of Legal Services, Tam Tamunokonbia, said subscribers should be able to suspend their subscription up to at least four times annually. The resolution was reached to prevent consumers from being exploited after an investigation was prompted by complaints regarding allegations of abuse of dominant position by MCN. FCCPC had last year opened an investigation into the conduct of dominant Pay TV service providers. However, the commission has now directed MultiChoice to provide a price lock option that allows subscribers to maintain the same subscription fee for a minimum period of one year subject to a contractual agreement that clearly specifies the applicable terms and conditions. Even this directive is yet to be effected. http://thebureau.com.ng/2022/04/22/dstv-gotv-subscription-prices-still-high-despite-governments-ultimatum/ |
THE BUREAU https://i0.wp.com/thebureau.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Jona.jpg?w=644 Former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan says a "political process" is underway for a prospective presidential race in 2023, after which he is anticipated to launch his candidacy. "Yes, you've summoned me to come declare for the upcoming election." I'm not sure if I'm declaring or not. "Just keep an eye on the political process," Mr. Jonathan urged youths in his Abuja office on Friday.Young people from the Youth Compatriots of Nigeria, led by one Mr. Samuel, occupied Mr. Jonathan's office. Through a rally, the organization asked that the former president run for president in 2023. "Those who promised they could do it in 2015 fooled and manipulated us." We now know better. The minimal wage under Jonathan might buy one or two bags of rice. "What do we have today?" Samuel inquired. "We ask President Jonathan's forgiveness." We've realized our errors. We'd like him to return and finish what he started."Jonathan urged Nigerian youths to take a greater interest in politics and to use the Not Too Young to Run Act to actively participate in the political process. Jonathan is said to be covertly consulting for his presidential campaign as part of the All Progressives Congress (APC). There are rumors that Jonathan is President Muhammadu Buhari's 'anointed' presidential candidate in 2023. Despite the fact that he has not formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jonathan has avoided public engagement in the party's operations, as seen by his absence from the party's national convention in October 2021. If you want to be your own boss in 2022, here are 10 high-earning skills to master, including a handful that I've taught myself! You can work from the comfort of your own home. However, you must understand that in order to start earning consistently, you must put in a lot of effort and consistency. The following is a list of skills: 1. Search engine optimization When you type something into a search engine (as you may have done before arriving here), the search engine, say Google, makes some complicated decisions about which pages–out of millions–it will show you. There are many techniques for making websites BETTER so that Google will move them up the list. This is referred to as Search Engine Optimization (SEO) (AKA SEO). You clicked on this page because it was towards the top of Google's results. You would never have noticed it if it had been on page 100 of your search results. Companies are clamoring for SEO services as they aim to increase organic traffic to their websites and products. Because the alternative includes bringing in traffic through social media posting or advertising, organic views are quite valuable. Organic traffic, on the other hand, is made up of people who are motivated to find answers to the queries they are posing. An SEO consultant's average compensation, according to ZipRecruiter, is N2 million per year, with a well-rated SEO consultant on Upwork earning $60-250 per hour. That's not terrible for a self-taught skill. 2. Video Retouching As strange as it may sound, I adore video editing. Good video editors are in scarce supply in the age of the internet, when more businesses are shifting online. Although the average wage for a Video Editor on ZipRecruiter is N10 million per year, exceptional Video Editors on Upwork can earn $40-150 per hour. This is great news for talented freelance video editors, especially if you have the chops and the ability to market oneself. 3. Internet Marketing The word "digital marketing" embraces a wide range of activities. It could even incorporate search engine optimization (above). However, honing your digital marketing talents will pay off. Companies used to give interns jobs in digital marketing. But that is no longer the case. Companies are pouring money into digital marketing, realizing that it has the potential to displace traditional marketing—digital ad spending already accounts for about 60% of all ad spending. I made 30,000 NGN in less than 3 hours on the 24th December 2021. That was the money I used to buy my Christmas drinks. Many companies want to be announced. 4. The blockchain technology Blockchain is a mechanism for preserving valuable data in which each machine maintains a record. In layman's terms, it means that information is shared and copied across a system, making it more difficult to attack, as opposed to the traditional concept of storing data on a server that each computer accesses. Every computer keeps track of all transactions, making it far safer than a centralized server. Is that clear? 5. Coding It's unsurprising that coding remains an important skill, and it's also one you can acquire on your own. As we shift to a tech economy, developers are in high demand. To be a developer, you don't need a computer science degree, contrary to popular opinion. It is possible for anyone to learn to code! 8. Copywriting Do you want to be a writer? Have you ever fantasized about working as a writer in a Starbucks? Consider the same existence, but with a steady salary. Copywriting is the art of using words to persuade people to buy something, and it's a crucial talent. It's one of those abilities that many people believe they possess but few actually possess. It's difficult to develop watertight text that precisely captures your ideal consumer, halting them in their tracks and assisting them in overcoming purchase objections. That is why businesses pay. On ZipRecruiter, the average copywriter income is $59,084 per year. However, if you're the best, this is another one of those skills that will fetch you top dollar. Great copywriters are in high demand and command a hefty fee—the average Upwork copywriter wage is around $100 per hour. It's all about selling when it comes to copywriting. However, if you read the best wordsmiths in the business, you'll understand why they're so good. There's no "But wait, there's more" nonsense here. Just lovely, well-crafted phrases that make you grin and fall in love with a cause or business. 9. Certifications for AWS Cloud What exactly is Amazon? You could say bookstore, and you'd be partially correct. You might even call it an online market, and you'd be half correct. Did you realize, though, that one of Amazon's most profitable divisions has nothing to do with books or products? It's because of the cloud. Last month, Amazon Web Services (AWS) accounted for 10-12 percent of Amazon's income, but that amount is increasing year over year. Businesses are also willing to pay a premium for AWS-certified developers and architects. An AWS certified developer earns an average of $122,000 per year, whereas an AWS architect earns a whopping $165,748 per year. I. Ruth Omosayin Hundreds of #EndSARS protesters has stormed the city of Kabba, headquarters of Kogi West Senatorial district, demanding for good governance in the state and country. The protesters, who were mainly youths, stormed the ancient city on Monday. They called for end to bad governance in the area as well as articulate for other demands for the senatorial axis from governments. The protesters marched to the area office of the Nigeria Police in Kabba displaying placards with different inscriptions: “Bad Politicians Are the Real SARS”, “Stop Killing Us Before Our Time”, “#EndSARS, END SWAT” Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Babatunde Jude Nayo said the people of the community and the senatorial district at large cannot keep quiet in the face of the agony people of the area had suffered in the hands of the disbanded SARS unit. Nayo also said the protest against the police brutality was a kicker to the many issues working against the progress of the area. They listed five other demands that they expected to be addressed by the three tiers of governments failure to which they will take to the street. We want an end to bad governance in the state, because bad governance is worse than SARS. “We want all the township roads in Kabba to be fixed, we seek for the industrialization of Okunland, we want the NTA Kabba to go live again, and we want the College of Agriculture, Kabba to be converted to full fledge Federal University.” The youths, however, gave one week ultimatum to the governments to convince them that their demands will be met. Speaking to the protesters, the Area Commander, Kabba Police Area Command, Dauda Lasisi urged the protesters to ensured that the protest go on peacefully. He also warned them to beware of hijackers who may want to use the protest for their personal gains. He, however, called on the protesters to channeled their grievances to the right political class who can ensure that their demands are met. https://dgovscoops.com/2020/10/19/endsars-protesters-storms-kabba-lists-demands/
