Members of the taskforce are drawn from a wide spectrum of key stakeholders in the state, including state government officials, law enforcement agencies, the traditional institution, community and opinion leaders, religious leaders, transport owners and workers, women and youth groups as well as other civil society and community based organisations.

Addressing the committee members, the State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, described human trafficking as a modern form of slavery which he said is criminal and also against the will of God.

Akeredolu, represented by the Deputy Governor, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, lauded NAPTIP for taking the bold step to set up the state Taskforce across the country.

He added that he believed the gesture will go a long way to open the eyes and minds of the populace to the inherent dangers in committing their lives to agent of darkness pretending to help them seek greener pastures outside the country.

The Governor lamented that the youths are the most vulnerable as they are often recruited unknowingly to become slaves and prostitutes once they are outside the shores of the country.

"The gory tale we get from individuals who have been victims of human trafficking about the indignity and deprivation they suffer should be eye openers to our youths who are still being deceived that the pasture is greener in those countries that provide the environment for the illicit trade to thrive.

"It is worrisome to note that the name of the country has been dragged in the mud by unscrupulous element through their nefarious activities in human trafficking.

"Aside focusing on trafficking of persons to overseas countries, efforts should also be made to look inwards as incidences of human trafficking abound within the country" Akeredolu said.

The Governor charged the taskforce team to direct its effort towards discouraging people from going into the journey of unknown while those already trafficked victims should be rescued and rehabilitated accordingly.

On her part, the Director-General of NAPTIP Dame Julie Okah-Donli said the purpose for the setting up of the taskforce was premised on the need to enhance state and non-state multi sectoral response towards combating human trafficking in Nigeria.

According to her, members of the committee are expected to develop strategies and state action plans on counter-trafficking issues. Carry out programmes for effective reintegration of trafficked victims into the society. Work with state Ministry of Justice on how to protect, assist and provide access to justice for victims of Trafficking.

4 companies to commence operations in Ondo

A wind of industrial revolution is blowing across Ondo State with the springing up of four major industries namely; Ondo-Linyi Textile, a Cassava Ethanol Factory, Trucks and Tricycles Assemblage Plant and a Paper Mill which will soon commence operations.

The factories situated at the Ore Industrial Park were the dividends of the many MoUs signed by the state government with the Linyi Municipal Republic of China.

The State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on inspection visit to the Ore Industrial Park said his government had entered into strategic partnerships with Chinese companies when he travelled to China in 2018 in furtherance of his vision to industrialise the state.

His words: “They said they could bring in industries here. We signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) there and decided to come back to establish the park, and as you can see, it’s now a marvel.

“I was here a few months ago, not much of this was up. Now it’s almost set for commissioning of the projects.

“We believe that soon, all of us in Ondo State will laugh. So many people will be employed here. The textile industry is yet to start to its full capacity and a lot of ladies are already employed.

“The Paper Mill is coming up and almost completed. The Paper Mill also uses sawdust, so it cannot be wasted. Load it and bring it to be bought because it is needed here,” urges sawmillers in the state.

Another dividend of the Governor’s visit to China was the establishment of the Cassava to Ethanol Plant at the Ondo/ Linyi Industrial hub within the Ore Industrial Park which will soon be ready of operation.

According to the Governor, the Cassava to Ethanol Plant when completed, would require up to 300-400 tonnes of cassava daily and with about one million tonnes of cassava annually.

Already, the Plant has accommodated hundreds of people of the state and would still engage more when completed.

He further said there was the need to encourage indigenes to farm and plant a lot of cassava which could not be wasted because it would be bought by the factory.

According to Akeredolu, the state has been buying a lot of cassava, and “my only worry is that we cannot allow hunger in this state, because the whole cassava in Ondo cannot feed this factory.

“We have another factory coming up here, an agro-chemical factory. The industries we have here, Ondo State has never had it before anywhere. We thank God for everything,” he added.

Earlier, Consultant of the projects, Alex Ajipe, explained that the cassava to Ethanol project is over 80% completed and would be connected to the national grid in the next two months after its completion.

He added that information have been passed to people of the state as regards the establishment of the factory so as to mop-up the cassava we have and encourage them to go into cassava planting.

Business Development Manager of the Company, Jack Sun, thanked the Governor for the opportunity given them to establish the factories in the state.

While assuring that the cassava to Ethanol Factory would be commissioned in few months, he urged people of the state, especially farmers to invest more in cassava plantation which is what the factory needs.

At the Textile section, he explained that currently, over 360 workers are engaged, saying the number would be increased to 2,000 when it is completed.

“The state government still has a lot to do by providing enabling environment for farmers such as considerable land.

“So we really need government to do agricultural land clearing so that we can have enough land to cultivate.

“We also need machineries like tractors. If you look at the whole state, I don’t think we have up to 10 tractors. So we need tractors, planters, harvesters among others. If we have land and machineries are given to us then we can prepare our land”, he stressed.

The chairman assured that the demand for cassava by the factory will not result in food insecurity in the state but may lead to increase in the price of cassava products.

“Although, the price of cassava products like garri, pupuru will jump up but definitely it will be available. It is an opportunity for cassava farmers to smile.

“If you look at the price of garri and you compare it with the price of foods like beans, rice, you will discover that garri is very low.

PoliticsAPC Dominance ‘ll Accelerate Devt’ by pressy011(op): 10:30am On Mar 15, 2019
‘APC dominance ‘ll accelerate devt’

Following the unprecedented victory of candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just concluded House of Assembly elections in Ondo State, chieftains of the party have affirmed that their dominance of the Hallow Chamber will further accelerate the development of the State.

The Party chieftains, in separate interviews with The Hope, said the ruling APC, with the majority of members of the Hallowed Chamber, enjoined the lawmakers to work hand-in-glove with the governor in the overall interest of their constituents and the state at large.

Their election would no doubt, improve the socio-economic development under the present administration led by Arakunrin Akeredolu when the 9th Assembly is inaugurated.

The party leaders expressed optimism, that the electoral victory for the government of the day is also a sweet story for people of the state, as more dividends of good governance would come their ways following the support the present administration would receive from the new Lawmakers.

According to them, having an Executive and Legislative arms of government on the same page will go a long way in assisting the administration to implement its visions for thorough smooth passage of Bills without rancour.

Sharing his views, Ondo State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Mr. Kola Olawoye (SAN), said the anticipated symbiotic relationship between the two arms of government, would go a long way in helping the governor to transfer his lofty aims on paper to tangible programmes and projects.

He commended the Akeredolu-led administration for what it had been able to achieve, especially in the area of infrastructural development even with the little the state had.

Also, a former Lawmaker, Senator Titus Olupitan noted that the House, when dominated by majority of a political party, would eliminate unnecessary delay and squabble between the government and members of the hallowed chamber and would guarantee delivery of more dividends of democracy.

In the same vein, other party leaders, Mr Olaide Adelami and Alex Ajipe, while encouraging the lawmakers to come up with well researched bills that will benefit both the government and citizens, urged both arms to uphold the principle of separation of powers.

They expressed optimism, that the 9th Assembly will breath in legislative business with a call to the lawmakers to ensure proper checks and balances through dialogue.

They admonished the incoming Assembly members to see themselves as one united family with the Executives and collaborate for effective service delivery.

The 9th Assembly is expected to be inaugurated in June with the APC occupying the majority seats with 23 members, PDP 2 members, while Zenith Labour Party has one.

Vote buying has been described as an attribute of poverty and hunger which will not take Nigeria to anywhere but total destruction.

This is the submission of Chief Sehinde Arogbofa in an exclusive chat with The Hope on the electioneering process in Nigeria.
