Armed Forces laud Oyetola on rapid socioeconomic development

The Nigerian Armed Forces on Monday applauded the Governor of the State of Osun, Adegboyega Oyetola, over the commitment of his Administration towards rapid socio-economic development in the State.

They gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Governor in his office, at the Government Secretariat, Abere, Osogbo, by members of the Senior Course 43 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji, Kaduna State.

The Director of the Nigerian Armed Forces Department of Land Warfare, Brig. General Adetokunbo Fayemiwo, who led the AFCSC team, said their experience in the State has further confirmed Oyetola's commitment to improving the standard of living of the people of the State.

Fayemiwo said the Administration had also demonstrated strong passion for adequate security of lives and property of the citizenry as reflected in the sustained peace and stability in the State.

He maintained that the love of the Administration towards keeping the State and the residents safe at all times was evidenced in the hands of fellowship and overwhelming support he has consistently been giving to the security agencies, particularly officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Fayemiwo who appreciated the warm reception given to the members of the team, pledged the continued support of the Armed Forces to sustaining the peace for which the State is known.

"Our experience so far in the State has confirmed your commitment and passion towards creating the right atmosphere for socio-economic growth and development as well as enhancing the living standards of the good people of the State of Osun.

"I assure you that all that we have heard today and the outcome of our study in the coming days, would be put to use in the course of our research, and indeed, as we progress in our careers", he said.

Speaking on the purpose of the visit, Fayemiwo said the Senior Course students came to Osun to understudy the effect of the global coronavirus pandemic on security, which is the current issue in the world.

"The students of the College are visiting eight States which are Osun, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Imo, Jigawa, Kano, Rivers and Taraba States. The students are currently undergoing the college tour.

"AFCSC is an institution where we have Army, Air Force and Navy serving together for the purpose the institution had been established for. The AFCSC is providing junior and senior leadership training, military education and core practical education for armed forces.

"In this case, the students of Senior Course are attached to topical issues affecting the nation and in this circumstance, we looked closely at current issue of pandemic, and how it affects the national security, in line with this year's theme: 'Pandemic and National security: COVID-19 perspective'.

"The tour will afford the students opportunity to carry out primary research and have the opportunity to get first-hand information and opportunity to ask questions and make contributions.

"Since Osun is one of the selected States, this will help us to get our report from the State so as to be able to do our analysis on the topic", he added.

In his response, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola appreciated the military for their loyalty to the State towards securing the lives and property of the residents, adding that the ”State is happy with the growing partnership between us and the Nigerian Armed Forces.”

He said the government had since embarked on a journey towards revamping the health sector just as he explained the administration’s efforts at curbing the spread of Coronavirus in the State.

"Permit me to appreciate the Nigerian Armed Forces for their non-kinetic collaboration and unflinching security support at all times.

"Your theme for this Tour is indeed apt considering the devastating effect of the Coronavirus pandemic globally.

"As a state, the pandemic took its toll on us, like in other States. However, our proactive measures helped significantly in mitigating its effect on our people.

"For an appropriate holistic response, we constituted a central coordinating committee headed by myself with a delegated authority to my Deputy, alongside inter- ministerial committees to take charge of key aspects of our response to the crisis.

"Thankfully, we rose to the occasion with an aggressive public advocacy programme and containment strategy, with the active support of some of our renowned medical professionals.

"We were also firm in imposing total lockdown that paid off in no small measure in helping us to restrict the spread of the virus.

"Also, the worth of our sustained investment in public health revitalisation came to the fore, especially around Ejigbo where the crisis broke out as a result of the return of our citizens and those of other states from Ivory Coast.

"Our proactive handling of the Ivory Coast returnees averted a major pandemic and earned us encomiums from Nigerians, the NCDC and other notable organisations.

"Looking back, I must say that our broad-based and inclusive stakeholder engagement helped in no small measure in tackling the first wave of the pandemic. For instance, we are among the first States to set up a Food and Relief Committee, involving eminent citizens of our State across political and religious divides.

"In all, I am happy with what we have done so far. We will continue to draw worthy lessons from the experience,” Oyetola added.

Speaking on the main features of the budget, Oyetola said inputs were sought from various stakeholders in the process of the formulation of the Appropriation Bill being presented.

On his plans to provide jobs and the good life for the citizens and the youth, Governor Oyetola said, ”Despite the current economic situation, the Government will remain undaunted and resolute to provide sustainable livelihood and economic mainstay for the citizenry, most importantly, our teeming youth population.

”In that direction, I have recently flagged off the commencement of the International Trade Centre, Dagbolu. The Trade Centre, commencing from the next two months, will generate not less than 10,000 new jobs, 80 per cent of which will go to our youths in the State through the Dry Port, Car Marts, sundry commodity merchandises, ware housing and logistics.

”In view of the fact that the youthful population of Osun State is one of the greatest assets of the State in its economic diversification agenda, it is pertinent for Government to mainstream them into the State’s socio-economic activities. Thus, the State is poised to vigorously promote the Youth Export Development Programme (YEXDEP) in the State to enhance the contributions of the State’s youths to the non-oil export sub-sector of the economy.

"To show our government’s seriousness and commitment, a sum of N1, 487,110,159.00 has been earmarked for youth related activities in the 2021 Budget proposal," adding that the interventions will be in Mining, Agriculture, and Skills upgrade and Entrepreneurship Development programme for youths (supported by MSME/BOI Fund) among others.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Speaker of the State Assembly, Hon. Timothy Owoeye, said the legislative arm of the State government was impressed by performance index of the 2020 budget, which was 85.4 percent as at September ending, describing it as a laudable feat.

He maintained that the 2020 budget, tagged "Budget of Restoration", did not betray its nomenclature particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, adding that the government was also able to embark on numerous capital projects, fulfill its obligation and make life meaningful for the people.

He also commended the administration for prompt payment of salaries, pension, and the recent increase in workers' salaries across the State.

.Akeredolu inagurates Bola Tinubu Skills Acquisition Centre in Ile-Oluji

Former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Friday urged Nigerian youths to brace up to emerging socioeconomic challenges by committing themselves to different technical, vocational and skill acquisition programmes.

The programmes, he noted, are designed to make them to be self-employed, self-independent and self-reliant.

He said the time has come for government at various levels to narrow down focus on the informal sector by premising their policies and programmes on things that would reduce drastically, the mad rush for white cola jobs among the unemployed population.

Tinubu spoke at the official launch of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Skill Acquisition Centre, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, through Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the State of Osun.

The Centre, built by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Nigeria, was established to provide technical and vocational skills for the teeming populace.

The APC National Leader said the state of the nation's economy has made it imperative for the citizens to think out of the box and brace up for entrepreneurship programmes.

He called on the people to see the Centre as a place where they can acquire maximum training and skills, saying the era of seeking jobs under government and its parastatals has gone.

"It is important for us to appreciate that skills acquisition is the best way to go for now in view of the nation's economy.

"The era of white collar job is gone. Entrepreneurship is the best way to go for now. Just as it is important to acquire conventional education, skills acquisition is also the way to go.

"I commend the initiator of the Centre, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, for this wonderful vision to rescue the people out of the scourge of unemployment.

"It is evident that this Centre can provide jobs for the teeming citizens, particularly residents of Ile-Oluji and Ondo State in general.

"I appeal to you all, particularly the beneficiaries of this Scheme to take the advantage of this Centre to learn skills that can make you to be self independent and become employers of labour and create jobs for others", Tinubu said.

While commending the Federal Government for the timely implementation of the SDGs programme, the former Lagos governor also urged the host community to put the facility to good use.

He seized the occasion to canvass for the people's support and cooperation for the Akeredolu-led Government in the State, just as he urged them to re-elect the governor for a second term.

Inaugurating the centre, the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, applauded the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for taking the welfare of the citizens as priority.

He lauded the leadership of the SDGs in the country for taking Nigerians out of the scourge of unemployment, poverty and hunger.

Akeredolu who described the initiative as a complement to numerous people-oriented programmes of his administration, said the Centre would go a long way to reduce poverty among the people.

He sought the continued support of the people of the State and assured them of further good works when he is re-elected for a second term.

Earlier, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, said the Centre remains a strategic tool for the economic empowerment of the teeming youths.

Orelope-Adefulire who commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his continued commitment and support for the implementation of the SDGs in Nigeria, said the initiative was aimed to improve the economy, eradicate poverty, banish hunger and stamp out societal vices among the unemployed segment of the population.

"A crime-free society is the one that its youths are productively engaged. Investing in youths will lead to poverty eradication, which in turn leads to social security", she added.

This is also as the Governor disclosed plans by the administration to build a world-class museum and cultural Centre in the State.

Oyetola assured that his government is fully aware of the abundant opportunities inherent in the preservation and promotion of the State's heritage and tourism.

He said government is resolved to prioritise the tourism sector as one of the economic pillars to drive the State's economy.

"We are happy to have an Ooni who shares our dream that Olojo Festival should be of tourist and commercial values and not a mere avenue for celebrations and merry making," Governor Oyetola added.

Ibrahim, who presented the cheque to the state Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on Thursday, at the Government House, Alagbaka, Akure, said the state must as a matter of urgency declare the Covid-19 as a mega project with strategic plans to prevent the spread.

He said the only way to stop the spread is when the people help themselves and cooperate with the Government on its directive.

"There are reason we take all these actions. We don’t just wake up and issue directives. We are worried about the lives of our people. There is nothing wrong with staying at home for now. We are determined to do our best and work for our dear state." Akeredolu said.

The Governor called on the people to ensure that the protocol established are followed by regularly washing their hands and applying sanitizers.

PoliticsImplementation Plan For Ondo Deep Seaport Receive By Aketi On Thursday. On by pressy011(op):
Gov Akeredolu to receive implementation plan for Ondo Deep Seaport on Thursday

The Ondo state Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN will on Thursday in Akure, the state capital receive the Project Implementation Plan for the proposed Ondo Deep Seaport from Ocean Infrastructure Management (OIM), a Spanish firm, and Franchise and Business Solutions Limited (FBS), its Nigerian partner.

The plan, which will be presented to the Governor during a high-leveled interaction meeting on the seaport project, will spell out milestones and timelines for the completion of the multi-billion dollar project.

Aina Egharevba, managing director/CEO of Amiable Consultancy and Logistics Services, consultant to the State Government on the port Project, said the deep seaport being championed by Akeredolu’s government, would open up the economy of Ondo State and create jobs for over 20,000 people in the coastal areas of the state.

Egharevba, who is a former executive director, Marine and Operations of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), said some key milestones including the preparation of the port feasibility study; conducting preliminary surveys such as the bathymetric/hydrographic survey and geotechnical survey; soil resistivity test, Met-Ocean studies; and topographic survey for the deep seaport, have been successfully achieved.

She said the feasibility study and conceptual master plan for the new port have been approved by the NPA.

Egharevba said the Spanish team will also carry out a review of key project issues and establish common understanding of the project objectives with officials of the Ondo State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA).

“After this meeting, we will be moving to the next crucial stage, which is the development of the Outline Business Case (OBC) and Final Business Case (FBC). We are committed to working with the Ondo State Government to realise the full vision of the Governor for the deep seaport,” she said.

Recall that on a recent investment drive trip to The Netherlands with President Muhammadu Buhari, Akeredolu said the Ondo Deep Seaport project is the future of the state.

“We are doing things for the next generation. We have started and there is no going back. The President has said most of the times that Ondo is the right place for a deep seaport. We should not play politics with everything. This is the best place to have a deep seaport,” he said.

According to him, the state has the responsibility of preparing the ground and showing the feasibility and bankability of the project.

“The Chinese, Dutch, and others are interested because this will be a West African port; not just for the country. It is not that we are looking for money to build a port but we are looking for investors willing to invest here,” the Governor had said in Akure during the presentation of the report of the consultants to the State executive council and stakeholders of the coastal communities earlier in the year.

WNTV & WNBS @ 60: Akeredolu eulogises Awolowo’s legacy
By Adekola Afolabi

The governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, yesterday eulogised the Premier of the Western Nigeria, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, for setting the pace by establishing the Africa’s first television, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV).

Governor Akeredolu said late Awolowo represented an inter-generational link, noting that the late sage lived before his time just as he lived ahead of his time.

Akeredolu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Chief Olugbenga Ale, made the revelation in his keynote address at the grand finale/ /Gala Night in celebration of the 60TH anniversary of the first-in-Afria television organised by the television’s Alumni, held at Intentional Conference Center, University of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The event was organised by the Foundation for Ibadan Television Anniversary Celebrations (FITAC) under the Chairmanship of Ambassador Yemi Farounbi.

According to him, the defunct Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) as it was then called, later became the breeding hub for future lights in the nation’s broadcast industry, saying that the Southwest is particularly fortunate to have had Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

The WNTV Ibadan was the first television station launched in Nigeria and Africa by Chief Awolowo on October 31, 1959.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo was indeed a man of many parts. He was not just described in various ways by different people. He was in most cases, defined variously by even the same persons. To many, he defied proper and befitting description. It is, therefore, with nostalgic emotions that I stand here to play the role for which I am invited.

“Such synergy, in my view, does not erode neither will such diminish our individual peculiarities we have found treasurable in the six states of the Southwest. The time to act is now,” he said.

Veteran media practitioners including Ambassador Yemi Farounbi, Chief Olu Falomo, Folake Solanke, Chief Sanya Oyinsan, and several others graced the occasion.

The event also featured awards presentation and cultural display.
