Fieryblaze: Good Morning All! Please what is the best way to get Starlinks in Lagos right now? I am considering buying from all these resellers that offer Enterprise plans. Is that advisable or is there a better way? heyyy, not sure if you got answered, but yeah that's definitely an option--i did that and it's been pretty straightforward (and expensive *sobs*, 86k a month for the 1TB priority plan) i think you should only use a reseller that's mentioned on the official Starlink page...just Ctrl-F for "Nigeria" and you should see all of them the only caveat is that you can't really "manage" your router through the app, so e.g. if you wanted to change your SSID you'd need to contact the reseller's support--but they've been pretty quick with stuff like that for me |

Hi everyone, one of my friends wants to get a starlink, but they're worried about the speeds. Does anyone around say, Egbeda have any insight into the performance?
(also they don't have the best power situation--could there be any recommends for a sort of battery backup? there's been some mentioned in the thread--they were thinking of one of those blue gate UPS but that wouldn't last more than an hour would it) |

dustmalik: Here's a live Starlink satellite map showing the concentration of ground stations around the world. Though it shows there are no ground stations in Africa, so I don't know how accurate that is. However, it gives you an idea as to why performance is generally poor in most locations in Africa compared to what is obtainable in Europe and Americas.

assuming one was in Lagos, what's their best option for getting access to Starlink?
i know before you could use the business plan and pay more, but that seems to have been removed as an option.
if someone got a mini terminal from, e.g. Jiji, is there any guarantee it'd work at home? |

Samxie: Direct To Cell makes me think about the iPhone's Emergency SOS via satellite, exclusive to iPhone 14 and later.
It might be one of those things that will require phones with special hardware specifications, and so the barrier of entry may be high for the African context.
Imagine buying a flagship device that costs over 1m (plus a monthly sub) to stay connected, versus buying a budget device, throwing in a SIM, and buying tiny amounts of airtime to use as you go. The choice will be obvious for most people.
Also, it probably wouldn't even work indoors because of the whole "direct clear view of sky" thing. Lol.
There would have to be serious innovation to make Direct to Cell competitive with regular carriers in our context. No, it's meant to work with existing phones, but yeah you need to be able to see the sky. The Verge wrote about it: https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/12/23914081/spacex-starlink-direct-to-cell-satellite-internet-lte-connectivityAnd they're even using it right now for hurricane relief efforts (but just SMS): https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/6/24263801/starlink-t-mobile-fcc-satellite-hurricane-helene |

GeoAfrikana: I just hope so. Last year I needed to install Java for a webmapping software (Geoserver) only to read that Java now sells licenses. I was shocked and disappointed. Since then I've been thinking of migrating to mapserver. Mapserver is an alternative to Geoserver and it's Python friendly.
Additionally, Google has declared Kotlin as the official language of Android. It used to be Kotlin and Java but now it's Kotlin only.
You know Google owns Kotlin.
Lastly, people should forget this "Java can't die" mentality. I'm not saying Java is dying or it's dead but I'm saying it can die. Greater brands have existed before it only to become history.
Yesterday, I was speaking with a friend who's an Android developer, he's now forced to learn Kotlin. So, if you're an Android developer, please learn Kotlin if you want to remain relevant. Aren't Java and Kotlin like basically the same? I thought Google liked it because it was like a simpler version of Java Plus you can still use Java if you want - it’s not really by force And… Google doesn’t own it. Apparently, it’s open source |

Me, I’m just in my corner laughing By the time they’ll do SIM swap and all your OTPs will be entering their phone (that’s what they usually do in America). To the guy above me that said use long password: Do you remember the Great Twitter Hack of 2020?? You wanna say Apple (who themselves have 4.5M followers but they don’t tweet at all), Bill Gates (you know him nah), Mike Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos (owner of Amazon - richest man), heck even Barack Obama and Joe Biden (ex and aspiring presidents) did not use sensible passwords?? This thing is too funny again |

rastaLivity: Can’t find my AirPods Pro serial number on my phone, what could be the problem?
Also it pauses excessively whenever I ON the automatic ear detection From Apple: • The serial number is on the underside of the lid. • If your AirPods are connected to your iOS device, you can also go to Settings > General > About > AirPods for the serial number. • If you don't have your charging case, but you have the original packaging, you can find the serial number next to the barcode. Do all of them match? |

If you’re actively testing apps, then you’ll need either the full Visual Studio (for cross-platform), Android Studio (for Android) or Xcode (for Apple platforms) |
