THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD PLOT TO A WRITER.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A PLOT TO A WRITER

While we now understand a something of what a Plot entails, it is also imperative to understand its importance as a tool to a writer, whether Fiction or Non-Fiction.

I. The Plot helps the writer to focus attention on the important characters and their roles in the story. This tool helps a writer to build characters that will affect the story and connect events in an orderly manner.

II. A well-crafted plot helps create a desire in the reader to go on reading. If the writer rightly applies all elements of a Plot, the reader is thus absorbed into it and therefore hungers to know what happens next.
The reader becomes emotionally attached to the story and would not drop it until he/she arrives at the end.

III. A good Plot forms a memory on the readers’ minds, allowing them to think about the book or story. And it can even inspire of tempt the readers to want to read it again.

IV. A well plotted story helps the reader to understand the message being conveyed by the author and the explicit or implicit moral of the story.

V. Finally, a good Plot must eventually reveal the entire story and give the reader a sense of completion that he has finished the story and reached a conclusion. Readers must not be left hanging or feeling dissatisfied.

Well, with this few points and what we have above, I do sincerely hope in my small way I have helped us all have a better understanding of what a Plot is and what are its elements in Fiction Writing.

Thank you, Divepen for this honour and many thanks to my fellow writers.

3. CLIMAX

Climax is the part of the story where something big happens. It is the turning point of the Plot. The climax is also known as the main plot of the story. It is usually not long. But it is that moment of highest interest and emotion.

The reader is put on edge by the intensity of the climax and wonders what will happen next.

In Romance Novels, this is where the heroine may turn down the hopeful lover/hero. While in Action Thrillers, the protagonist may at this point be surrounded by enemies with no hope of escape.

4. FALLING ACTION

This is the winding up of the story. The writer begins to resolve events and complications and the results of actions of main characters are put forward.

At this point conflict ends.

5. RESOLUTION

Also known as the conclusion. This last element of a Plot brings the story to an end — either happy or tragic. Most writers consider this element the most satisfying... I always do, lol.

Resolution is also called in French Denouement, which literally means ‘to untie’ or ‘unravelling’.

The writer resolves all conflicts, ties up all loose ends and viola, the story ends.

ELEMENTS OF A GOOD PLOT

In my opinion, before discussing the elements of a Plot, we have to first understand the meaning of a Plot.

WHAT IS A PLOT?

PLOT is a literary term used to describe the events that make up a story or the main part of a story. These events relate to each other in a pattern or sequence. The structure of a novel depends on the organisation of events in the plot of the story.

Plot is known as the foundation of a novel or a story which the characters and settings are built around. A Plot is meant to organise information and events in a logical manner.

Simply put a Plot is a summary of a story, composed of casual events, which highlights all important points and line of a story, therefore providing a more complete picture of how a fleshed-out story works by a logical skeleton.

In Fiction writing, a Plot is same as a storyline.

ELEMENTS OF A PLOT

In my course of study, I discovered that there are several elements of a Plot. But for the purposes of this seminar we will only be discussing the five most important elements.

1. EXPOSITION

The exposition or introduction is known as the beginning of the story where characters and settings are established.
The setting includes two parts — the WHERE and the WHEN.

The tone of the of the story is also established at this point. The conflict or story’s main problem is also introduced.

The writer introduces the protagonists or main characters of the story and establishes their personalities.

2. RISING ACTION

The rising action occurs when a series of event build up to conflict. The main characters are established by the time the rising action of a Plot occurs and at the same time, events begin to get complicated.

It is during this part of the story that excitement, tension, or crisis is encountered.

Rising action helps the writer to reveal the conflict of a character both to his/her readers and to the character himself or other characters. The rising action also shows the progress of the story.

rapmike: Maybe its very educative ( at least I expect it to be), but in a situation where my phone hangs repeatedly over it, what can I do? Right now there is no whatsapp on my phone because I had to delete the app. All for my phone not to hang.
I'm just testing the waters there... frankly I think I haven't even made a good first day impression and I'm not sure yet how much good impression I have about the group.

But I suppose it's still a little early to form an opinion.

But should it come to what you are experiencing @ rapmike, then deleting the group, not my whatsapp app, will be the only option.

So far, convo with repogirl, made it worthwhile.

We'll see.

AT LAST!

I can say that... and I'm sure you all heave that as well, Lol.

This has been a long journey, not because of the length of the series but because of so many events truncating its progress. Thank God, we are finally done.

I am relieved... I bet you are too *winks*

When I first dreamed Take Me As I am, I was pumped up with perceived challenge and pulsating with excess energy, now I simply say ... well done to all Inspirational Romance Writers... I can write a Contemporary Humorous Romance any day and from beginning to end, remain pumped and pen-flowing... this took a whole lot out of me.

At a time, I lost inspiration... I didn't clearly see my scenes anymore... I panicked, because I'd already advertised it. I was sorely tempted to pick any one of my Contemporary Romance story lines and go with it. But somewhere, the thought of failure knocked the confusion out of my head and I dug my pens in... literally... I wrote this series mostly on paper than straight to my laptop. And I was editing and reediting and re-reediting... dang! Lol.

All thanks to God, the story made it. It touched people. It struck the right notes. It spoke for itself. And it taught me, I can do all things by the power of Him who strengthens me... true word.

I am glad it's over.

I want to thank you all for hanging in there. I want to thank you all for your generous comments and encouragements. I thank you for staying steady, in spite of constant excuses and absenteeism. I thank all who came out of the shadows... deghosted and came to live wink and gave their support. I am grateful to those who have always been there... from way back UBMH... you guys rock.

I also thank my behind-the-scene crew. Leading the crew is my husband and partner, M, thank you my love. He made sure I kept writing and never gave up. I also thank Paulette, always a sister, friend and offered proofreading services sef... still I won't see the corrections o, lol.

I thank fellow writers, who take time to follow me -- Repogirl, Audrey Timms, DaveP, D9ty7 -- and so many of you. I am honoured by you all.

I also specially thank those who took the time to give me courage and tell me *cool temper* when the thread was trashed by a troll. Sincerely, that almost killed an already-hard-to-finish story. But we survived it and for that I say, thank you all and thank God.

The story is done. But love stories are not done here. We shall be back. Give me time to regroup, though *winks*

Our book shall come out soon.

I cannot seriously write now though, pardon me. I need the time and concentration to work on the book.

But once it's done, free reads will come back and abandoned series will be finished, I promise... that is on my blog please. I have no abandoned series on Nairaland. Meanwhile, I shall probably entertain those who had not had the pleasure of reading my first and only finished Mystery series here with it come October.

Thank you all. I sincerely love and appreciate you.

Stick around with TM cos the romance is just beginning and it promises to get Pretty Spicey... God's own truth wink

I love you all,

TM David-West aka PrettySpicey.

P.S.

I shall be back before midweek to put up an in-house trailer of our sorely anticipated Book. If you loved Operation Stop the Wedding!!! and you think I called it, then you ought to wait with hunger and thirst for the novel... I swear the hero and heroine are killing me... hehehe grin grin grin grin

Let's see if Pretty can spice things up outside the walls of a safe blog and a forum wink

repogirl: Awwww, madam Prettyspicey, been offline for four days now and only just got in to read this overly awesome jumbo marathon of three heart wrenching, mind toppling chapters..... Forgive me if I made no sense but these past chapters have been wonderfully spellbinding, got me teary eyed and doing the sniffles.... I especially loved the scene where Caleb went back to confront Liz, that was the highest point for me.
well done madam, carefully thought out, well written and expressed, I must confess the green eyed monster on my back has you in its sights o! I envy your description prowess, my heart is literally aching for the pain Caleb and Liz are going through.

anyway, lemme cut short my rambling and just say, Great Work!

Nice to read your comment again.

SPSpecial: Mummy Dafe did a great job. People like her are very rare.

In all sincerity, i dont think Daniel deserved all the blames and accusations. Its a normal thing, no one would like to come to this world as a snake that crawled on the mountain and made no impact, leave no traces.

Daniel had no 'fruits', he was a young man that wished to become a father. If i am in his shoes, i would not settle down with her as well. But the fact that he deserted liz and end up with her in a non-challant, unloving and unconcerned manner is very annoying.

U are made to be great prettyspicey. keep up the good work.
Indeed SPSpecial, many are the men who would dia what Daniel Wigwe did -- each of course in his own way.
The truth is that is hard to ask a man to enter into a marital union without the possibility of procreation, especially in Africa were adoption is still seen like an abomination.

But no matter who we are or what we are, there's always Someone there willing to accept just the way we are -- Someone already equipped by God to do so.

Thank for your sumission and your continued encouragement, it means a lot.

JeffreyJamez: Your thriller skills are not that bad.....I mean, talking from WKBD and Missing Christabel I think You're good to go....
Thanks Jeffrey. Honestly I wanted my second book to be a Romantic Suspense-- Crime +Romance. I've got 2 solid story lines I can go with but I need to speak with a Nigerian Police Officer. Preferably one who works the Homicide unit. Even better one based in Lagos and understands the Panti system.

Whatever I do, I must create a believable Fact/Fiction mix.

Now you can get a few ideas on the US Police from the internet... the Nigerian Police is a whole different ball game.

And I'm hoping to have that book out by February'15
... so there.

If I'm not set, I'll swing the Kike/Duncan story... whatever works.

Timmytimmy: This is one of the most factual works of fiction I've read. I love the fact that unlike the average Mills and Boon, you have really depicted the cold, harsh reality called life that we all live in; Elizabeth is barren and that's that! No miracles, love that about the story. smiley

I was really happy to know that you wrote this work.As you rightly said, romance is usually read by mostly the feminine sex and I think you'll strengthen your followership by delving into other genres, thriller perhaps.

From this work, you've already shown us your wise outlook about life hence we need a work that would capture people from all works of life, we want more female authors coming from Africa, people with a story to tell.We don't want to keep being represented by not-so-worthy people. We want wonderful role models like you.

Finally, I believe you have the talent and so far, you have worked hard enough to keep this dream of yours alive. What advice can I give someone like you again? Lemme go with the cliché"if you can dream it, you can achieve it" I know you've heard that severally, but if you open your mind more to that truth, you'll see that anything is possible.

Signed,
Timmy.
Writing other genres is a private dream of mine. But I'm chiselling my writing skills with Romance first. I don't know though how good I'll be as a Thriller writer but never can tell until I try.

Thanks for your encouraging words... glad you and many appreciate the touch of reality... most times miracles come in the shape of a new chance not a new life per say.

While I'm honing my skills, I do hope you continue to enjoy my Romantic Fictions.

God bless
