NEWS DIGEST -The Norwegian Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Kjemprud Jens-Petter said on Wednesday that the National Library of Norway was interested in digitising literature books published in Hausa, Ibo and Yoruba.

Jens-Petter told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the
agreement to digitise the literature books would be signed between the
National Libraries of Norway and Nigeria, this month.

NEWS DIGEST – Five soldiers lost their lives in an ambush by Boko Haram at Pridang– Bitta in Gwoza local government area of Borno state.

Texas Chukwu, director, army public relations, confirmed the tragic incident, saying it happened on Thursday.

In a statement, Chukwu said the insurgents engaged troops of 271 task force battalion deployed in Operation Lafiya Dole in a gun battle.

Nigerian-British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor joins Angelina Jolie in `Maleficent II’

NEWS DIGEST -Nigerian -born British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor has joined Angelina Jolie in Maleficent 2, an upcoming sequel to the 2014 American Dark Fantasy film , Maleficent, produced by Walt Disney Pictures.

According to Disney, four years after the blockbuster was released, filming has started for the sequel, with the Nigerian-British thespian featuring among the cast.

Ejiofor, who is popular for his roles in “12 years a Slave” and “Doctor Strange,” features alongside Hollywood veterans Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning, who are both reprising their roles from the original film.

NEWS DIGEST -Afghan Special Forces have rescued over a hundred prisoners including policemen, women and children from a Taliban prison in southern Helmand province during a night-time operation, officials said on Thursday.

“A total of 102 people held hostage by the militants for a year in two villages in the district of Kajaki were freed, Jawid Saleem,’’ a spokesperson for the special forces said.

The prisoners included five women and children as well as three local policemen.

“The prisoners were captured for different reasons ranging from cooperating with and spying for Afghan forces, or being a member of local police,’’ Saleem said.

According to Saleem, the prisoners were kept in bad conditions with a lack of proper food and healthcare and were tortured.

The report states: “Tobacco is the only legal drug that kills many of its users when used exactly as intended by manufacturers.

“WHO has estimated that tobacco use (smoking and smokeless) is currently responsible for the death of about six million people across the world each year with many of the deaths occurring prematurely.

“This total includes about 600,000 people that are also estimated to die from the effects of second-hand smoking.
