I tore off its head again,’’ Sonelal told the ANI news agency. Sanjay Kumar, a doctor who treated him said he was amazed that the man survived after biting the hood, which could have contained venom, assuming it was a poisonous snake. continue reading- https://newsdigest.ng/world/2018/02/21/man-chews-off-snakes/ |

The Nigerian Community in South
Africa said on Friday that a member was stabbed
during a xenophobic attack in Rustenberg, North-West
Province area.
The President of Nigerian Union, South Africa, Mr
Adetola Olubajo, told the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) on telephone that the victim, identified as
Desmond, was attacked on Feb. 14.
“Desmond is a Nigerian hair piece hawker in
Rustenberg, North West Province of South Africa.
“He was attacked on Feb. 14 and sustained multiple
injuries. He was rescued when he was about to be set
ablaze after being wet with petrol,’’ Olubajo said.
He said that the Nigerian community in Rustenburg
was currently living in fear as tension has heightened
in the area.
Olubajo said that the union`s executive had visited the
city on a fact finding tour and had already spoken to
Nigerians in the area.
“Nigerians and their families told us that the
situation is very dangerous and that their lives are not
safe.
“They also alleged that some group of people were
abducting Nigerians and requesting money to bail
themselves.
“A Nigerian who couldn’t pay was murdered last
month. This same group also looted businesses of
foreign nationals, Nigerians in particular,’’ the
president said.
Olubajo said the union could not continue to keep
quiet on this criminality and xenophobic act meted to
Nigerians in South Africa.
He said that there was need for the mission and
government to intervene in the matter to avoid further
loss of lives and properties of Nigerians.
“There is need for the Nigerian government to engage
with its counterpart in South Africa. It’s not correct
that those who were attacked and killed are criminals.
“Such statements are misinformation and
misleading,’’ he said. (NAN) https://newsdigest.ng/world/2018/02/16/xenophobia-nigerian-stabbed/

Long-serving Arsenal manager
Arsene Wenger is hopeful of seeing out his current
two-year contract at the English Premier League club
amid speculation about his future.
The Frenchman signed a new contract at Arsenal at the
end of last season but the club have shown little
progress this term.
They sit sixth in the league, knocked out of the
English FA Cup and unsure of UEFA Champions
League qualification for next season.
The club’s inconsistent performance has led to
speculation that Wenger’s 22-year reign could come
to an end after the current season.
“I have always respected my contracts,’’ Wenger,
68, said.
“I will like to recall that I said `no’ to all the
biggest clubs in the world to respect my contract. So,
that’s always what I try to do.
“After that, we have as well to accept in our job that
the future is the future. But, for me, that’s to win
the next game.
“We have to perform better in every single game and
show until the end of the season a complete hunger to
win every single game. That’s what it’s about for
us.”
Arsenal’s best chances of winning a trophy remain
in the English League Cup, as they face Manchester
City in the final on Feb. 25.
They are also in the UEFA Europa League, where they
recorded a 3-0 win over Ostersunds in the first leg of
their last 32 tie on Thursday.
The Europa League is also Arsenal’s most viable
option to qualify for the UEFA Champions League
next season.
The eight-point gap to fourth-placed Chelsea in the
league appears insurmountable with 11 games left to
play.(Reuters/NAN) https://newsdigest.ng/sports/2018/02/16/arsenal-boss-wenger/ |
The students protest that forced
management to close down the Benue State University,
Makurdi was masterminded by students with carry-
overs, according to its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Msugh
Kembe.
“The protest that took place today (Friday) was
masterminded by students with many carry-overs, who
are not sure they will graduate and want to frustrate
the whole system,” Kembe told the News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Makurdi.
NAN reports that the students had locked all entries
into the school and barred the management and
lecturers from entering the campus because they were
stopped from writing their examinations for failing to
pay school fees.
Some students, who spoke with NAN on condition of
anonymity, claimed that they could not pay school fees
because their parents working with the state
government had not been paid salaries for several
months.
But Kembe, who described the students’ attitude as
“strange”, said that those involved in the protest did
so out of fear.
“They (students) had no reason to embark on the
protest. It is some of them that are behind in their
academic performance that staged the protest so as to
prolong their stay in the school, and not because of
school fees.
“Citing school fees is not tenable because management
explored all available avenues to enable those yet to pay
their fees, to write the examination.
“We issued forms for such students to sign
undertakings to pay their fees after their examinations,
but majority of the students rejected the undertaking.
“Some of them claimed that their parents were civil
servants, so we asked them to present post-dated
cheques, but the students rejected the idea,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor said that out of 25,000 students,
only 17,000 registered, while 8,000 were yet to register
or pay their fees.
According to him, those that refused to register were
afraid that they might not pass the examinations and
decided not to waste their money.
He advised parents to pick up their children from the
school as it had been closed down until further notice.
“The closure is a proactive measure to avoid
destruction to school property,” he said.
Kembe said that the second semester examination that
commenced on Monday had been put off. |
Aduke,a young pulchritudinous woman in her mid-forties,lived in the remote village of Ayeti. She had been in Adebayo's house as a wife, fifteen years passed away before her like a snake that walked on a rock with no path. She was barren.Fortunately, she had a religious husband,a Muslim, who believed human plights are from the Creator and He is the one to be beseeched in times of tribulations. "Ile IJA"(a house of duel ) was the name tagged at the house she lived in.Do you wonder why?,well, don't be too curious.Besides the fact that this house was located in a slum, they were two occupants of this house who loved quarrelling with each other over trivial issues concerning their children. They fought on a weekly basis.Aduke, being a childless amongst these occupants, wept whenever the duo got into action. This afternoon, when the sun seemed to be furious, the children were playing outside, they seemed unfazed by the scorching sun.Aduke, was just returning from her shop where she sold children materials like shirt, short knickers, pads, toys, etc, when she spotted Alari and Romoke fighting as usual. She was so flabbergasted that she dropped her white bag, hanging around her wrist on the ground, not caring if it would get stained. "When will you halt this hogwash?",she asked, gasping. Alari was provoked with that question of hers, she didn't hesitate to give her an acerbic reply. "Eh! Aunty,a barren woman knows no pain of motherhood. Don't dare interfere!". Aduke had been warned by her husband to shun the wrestlers whenever they were in the mood to fight but she wouldn't listen. Her eyes dimmed with tears. She picked her bag, slapped her cheek and rushed inside her room. The Landlord who had just woken up by the deafening noise from the uproar, rushed down to the scene angrily. He was taken aback to see his tenants fighting again. He should have given them quit notices but he was a greedy man. He was a pseud. He loved boasting about his dilapidated house, claiming to have bought it with his money in the 80s.No one ever disputed that yet he kept announcing. "Enemies of progress, you have started your problem again",he lambasted them with a jerking voice. He was in his 70s.A die hard fan of burukutu. "I'll send you out of my house and no one will question me",he threatened. Alari stated at him disrespectfully, laughing loud at his vain threats, she called his bluff. "Baba, you had better go and sleep,if you continue talking",she shook her head,"I'll order my husband to stop offering you the ripe bunches of bananas to you",she threatened. He stared widely, aghast and his mouth agape. He couldn't risk losing the freebies. He swiftly chewed, swallowed and disgusted his fury. Romoke could read the expression on his face. She knew him for being a voracious glutton. She shifted her bulk of vituperative words towards him.She knew he wouldn't do nadir even if she spat on his face. "Baba For-Food-only.Unblushing old man.It is evident to the world that you'd die if she stopped the freebies",she reprimanded him. He couldn't give a reply, maybe he had received enough?.Instead,he lit a cigarette and headed to a burukutu joint where Old-for-nothing men had burukutu(a local wine made from maize),undiluted wine, claiming the dreadful enjoyment was to quench their Boredoms. ********************** Aduke was still locked up in her room, sobbing when her husband,a tall man of about 6ft 3ins came in.He had come to pick up an 8 by 9 spanner which he left and was supposed to take along to his workplace. He saw Romoke and Alari spitting fire each other yet he pretended as though he saw no one. He pressed the door's knot and it acted to his command. He was surprised to see Aduke on a wooden chair weeping. He moved closely to the chair, wondering what on earth could had gone wrong with her.He held her palms romantically. Her hands were hot. "What happened to you?",he asked with profound curiosity. She was reluctant to give a direct reply and thought of an indirect one. "Look at every nook and cranny of this room, lock, stock and barrel",she instructed. He was bewildered about the essence of staring at a room which he had been living for several years. "I'm confused now.",he said. "What did you see?",she asked in a low voice. She had lost her voice due incessant weeping. Having asked that question,Adebayo grew more bewildered. So lucky was he that Aduke released her from the cage of confusion. "Did you see any kid?",she felt despondent, with tears rolling down her cheeks.Having discovered the reason behind the question,he picked up his 8 by 9 spanner from an iron box at the corner of the 4 by 2 cm room and left.He uttered no word. She switched on the television, changed the current channel to a particular popular TV program called "Everyday Joli".On switching to the TV channel,a popular song by a Nigerian music icon named Shina Peters was being played. The song came on time. The song inspired her and changed her mood. She dozed off. |
