NEWS DIGEST – American Pop singer Mariah Carey has revealed that she suffers from bipolar disorder.

She was diagnosed in 2001 but had only recently been taking medication.

Carey told People magazine in an interview on Wednesday that she got the diagnosis when she was hospitalised following an emotional and physical breakdown around the time of her critically panned movie “Glitter” in 2001.

She said she did not want to believe it and only sought treatment recently.

“I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” Carey told the celebrity magazine.

NEWS DIGEST – No fewer than 13 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) 2017 Batch A stream 1 will repeat their service in Anambra.

Mr Ebenezer Olawale, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, disclosed this at the passing out of the corps members in Awka on Thursday.

Olawale, however, did not give details of those who would either repeat the service and those whose service year was extended.

He said that of the 2,814 corps members, 2,801 satisfied the requirements of service and were accordingly issued discharge certificates.

NEWS DIGEST – National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has passionately appealed to Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo to reverse recent increase in the tuition fees in state-owned institutions in the state.

NANS National Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Bestman Okereafor, said in a statement on Thursday in Enugu that the reserve became necessary in the interest of the teeming indigent students.

He said the recent increase in the tuition fees was alarming and beyond normal situation, adding that the development would be inimical to educational development of the state, if not reversed.

NEWS DIGEST – The Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Wednesday in Abuja, made case for more budgetary allocation to the FCT.

The committee, headed by Sen. Dino Melaye decried the yearly dwindling budgetary allocations to the FCT.

Melaye said available records showed that the allocations to the FCT had dropped from N109 billion in 2008 to as low as N30billion in the 2017 fiscal year.

EWS DIGEST – The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), on Wednesday sealed a petrol station affiliated to the downstream petroleum sector retail arm of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for selling fuel at N181 per litre.

The DPR Zonal Operations Controller for Abuja, Mr Abba Misau, said this shortly after sealing the station.

NEWS DIGEST – The death toll after multiple and coordinated armed robbery attacks on five banks in Offa, Kwara state has risen as more corpses have been deposited in morgues.

The robbery, which lasted for about 1hr 15 minutes this evening, led to the death of some residents, bank officers and security operatives.

As confirmed by NEWS DIGEST, banks robbed include branches of Guarantee Trust Bank, EcoBank,First Bank,Union Bank and Zenith Bank.

NEWS DIGEST – Ten persons were confirmed killed by gunmen that invaded rural settlements in Daffo District of Bokkos Local Government, Plateau State, on Friday.

Mr Danjuma Wabas, Councillor representing Daffo District in the Bokkos Local Government Council, who confirmed the figure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said that the deceased were given a mass burial.

He said that those killed included five women, four men and an infant.

A NAN correspondent, who visited some of the affected villages, reports that many of them were burnt down while the fear-stricken villagers had fled to either Daffo, Bokkos or other areas of the state.

Among the houses razed down was that of a former Deputy Governor of Plateau.

Worst hit villages included Ngakudung, Farunhai, Mhorok, Ganda and Warrem-Hotom.

Also hit were Maidunna and Josho, where Sen. Joshua Dariye (APC/Plateau Central), took relief materials last week, following an attack on the village in February.

Some of the villagers, who spoke to NAN, said that the attackers wore “black uniform” and had sophisticated guns.

NEWS DIGEST – Prof. Henry Ugboma, the new Chief Medical Director (CMD), University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), says he has uncovered a money guzzling machine draining millions of Naira in the institution.
Ugboma told newsmen on Monday in Port Harcourt that the Cashless Service System (CSS) introduced for patients by the management of the institution was energising misappropriation of funds.
He said that the system was closed immediately he discovered the “machine’’ was driving fraud in the university’s financial management system.
“I suspended the cashless system because when I came and did a review of the system we discovered that the hospital is losing millions of Naira through it.
“But when we introduced direct payment we are now generating more funds.
“We will bring a new technology that will checkmate the system before we can restore it.
“We found out that the system is generating misappropriation of funds; we closed the system and reverted to the usual physical payment.

Okene violence escalates, houses, vehicles vandalised in Adavi

NEWS DIGEST – The political violence that erupted in Okene area of Kogi on March 3 has spread to Okehi and Adavi local government areas with many houses vandalised and several people injured.

Some of the victims of the violence told newsmen on Monday in a telephone interview that the armed and masked men moved about in four vehicles, attacking them from late Saturday night till the early hours of Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that seven houses and nine vehicles, including a motorcycle, were vandalised by the hoodlums in both local government areas.

Three persons were also injured by the attackers in Okehi area.

Among the victims were a two-term member of the House of Representatives, Abdulkarim Salihu, Mr Jude Sule, the state Financial Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) and the Chairman of the party in Okehi, Mr Adinoyi Aroke.

Weah was received by President Buhari at the presidential forecourt before the duo went into closed door meeting.

The former football star and a one-time World Footballer of the Year, was sworn in as Liberia’s new president on Jan. 22.

Weah won the Liberia’s presidential election as candidate of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) when he scored 61.5 per cent of the total of 720,023 votes cast, defeating the incumbent vice president of the country, Joseph Boakai, and the candidate of the ruling Unity Party.

Two pupils of Our Lady of Fatima School, Kuru, near Jos in Plateau, lost their lives in an accident involving their school bus on Monday, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the site of the incident, told NAN that the early morning accident, which occurred around Mararaba-Jama’a road, was as a result of brake failure.

“A total of 100 children and seven staff were in the bus; two children were killed instantly, while those injured have been taken to hospitals,” the official told NAN, pleading anonymity.

According to the official, one boy and one girl lost their lives.

He added that 18 kids were taken to Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, Jos, 76 to the Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos while four others were rushed to Bukuru Specialist Hospital.

NEWS DIGEST – No fewer than four UN aid workers were killed in a Thursday night attack by Boko Haram insurgents in Rann community in Kala Balge Local Government of Borno.

A female aid worker was also missing while another sustained injuries in the attack.

NEWS DIGEST – The National Universities Commission (NUC) has been urged to closely monitor universities in neighbouring countries that offer various degree programmes with a view to determine mushroom centres that issue fake certificates to students.

In a statement by Cotonou-based ISM Adonai university, the commission was enjoined to assess the status of some of the higher institutions, their accreditations, ranking and licensing from approving authorities and credible regulatory bodies.

The Director of Studies of ISM Adonai university, Henry Ogeiva, who signed the statement, said the monitoring become necessary in view of patronages of prospective students from Nigeria trooping to neighbouring countries for affordable and qualitative university education.

NEWS DIGEST – Nigeria is among the countries that the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is expected to visit next week on a trip to Africa.

Rex Tillerson would visit Nigeria and four other African countries from March 6 to 13, the U.S. Department of State has said.

Spokesperson for the Department, Ms Heather Nauert said Tillerson would also travel to Addis Ababa, Djibouti, Nairobi and N’Djamena.

During his visit to Abuja, Tillerson is expected to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari and other top government functionaries.

Nauert said: “On his first official trip to Africa, Secretary Rex Tillerson will travel to N’Djamena, Chad; Djibouti, Djibouti; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Nairobi, Kenya and Abuja, Nigeria, March 6-13, 2018.

NEWS DIGEST – The Police Command in Nasarawa State on Thursday arrested two students of Government Secondary School (GSS), Wamba, for allegedly setting ablaze two laboratories and a hostel in the school.

The command spokesman, DSP Idrisu Kennedy, confirmed the arrest of the two students in Lafia.

Kennedy told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the suspects were cooperating with the police on the investigation.

He said that the age of the suspects would determine whether they would be charge to court or not.
