Politics › 12 Facts You Need To Know About M.K.O Abiola And June 12 by priiince(op): 2:02pm On Jun 12, 2015 |
June 12, 1993 to this moment seem just like yesterday, but it is not just another calendar day in Nigeria; because in progressive ideological circles, today is regarded as the authentic ‘Democracy Day’ as against the ‘May 29′ popularly celebrated by the federal government.
Here are twelve important facts you need to know about this date.
1. The date is celebrated in honour of an annulled presidential election in June 12, 1993. Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, often referred to as M. K. O. Abiola, ran for the presidency in 1993, and is widely regarded as the presumed winner of the inconclusive election since no official final results were announced till date.
2. The election was annulled by Ibrahim Babangida, because of alleged evidence that they were corrupt and unfair, a development that ushered in a political crisis that led to General Sani Abacha seizing power later that year.
3. In 1994, Abiola declared himself the lawful president of Nigeria in the Epetedo area of Lagos island, an area mainly dominated by Lagos Indigenes, after he returned from a trip to solicit the support of the international community for his mandate. After declaring himself president he was declared wanted and was accused of treason and arrested on the orders of military President General Sani Abacha, who sent 200 police vehicles to bring him into custody.
4. Moshood Abiola was detained for four years, largely in solitary confinement with a Bible, Qur’an, and fourteen guards as companions.
5. Nigerian Pastor T.B. Joshua is said to have predicted the annulment to Abiola and warned him against contesting.
6. Abiola’s involvement in politics started at a young age. He was 19-years-old when he joined the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) in 1979.
7. For the June 12, 1993 presidential elections, Abiola’s running mate was Baba Gana Kingibe. He overwhelmingly defeated his rival, Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention.
8. Abiola died on July 7, 1998 on the day he was due to be released from incarceration under suspicious circumstances shortly after the death of General Abacha. The official autopsy stated that Abiola died of natural causes, but Abacha’s chief security officer, Al-Mustapha alleged he was beaten to death.
9. MKO Abiola used a ‘Hope’ campaign which President Barrack Obama also used.
Moshood Abiola’s Hope ’93 political manifesto
Many people may have paid attention to the word ‘Hope’ being used to convey a message of possibility during Obama’s 2008 election in America, but 15 years before then in Africa’s most populous nation, MKO Abiola became a rallying figure for many Nigerians with his ‘Hope’ campaign.
10. MKO Abiola died for the June 12 mandate but he was not the only June 12 casualty as General Sani Abacha also died in mysterious circumstances on June 8, 1998.
11. Chief MKO Abiola’s memory is celebrated in Nigeria and internationally. June 12, remains a public holiday in Lagos and Ogun states and other All progressive Congress party states. MKO Abiola Stadium was named in his honour.
12. The election was declared Nigeria’s freest and fairest presidential election by national and international observers, with Abiola even winning in his Northern opponent’s home state.
June 12 is thus a day to remember chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola as well as other democracy martyrs. http://www.naij.com/459738-12-facts-you-need-to-know-about-m-k-o-abiola-and-june-12.htmlLalasticlala, ishilove

Foreign Affairs › Nigeria, Others Consider Single Currency, Passport by priiince(op): 1:22pm On Jun 12, 2015 |
Anthony Maruping, AU Commissioner for Economic Affairs, said the Union was mooting the idea to adopt a single currency, as part of the Agenda 2063 road map.
He said in Johannesburg on Friday that it was aimed at connecting Africa through world class infrastructure with a concerted push to finance and implement major projects.
Maruping said all African central bank governors have already met and deliberated on the establishment of an African monetary fund.
He expressed the hope that the move would be the end result of the Agenda 2063.
Maruping said leaders of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi have already signed a protocol in Kampala for the adoption of a common currency in the next 10 years.
He said many economists and experts believed that the ambitious programme of an African single currency was achievable. “The Payment Systems Steering Committee of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has also proposed a system to facilitate cross-border payment and settlement.
“This system will allow the settlement of payment transactions in a central location on the basis of a single currency.
“This model will initially be tested on the current common Monetary Area countries that use the South African rand,” he said. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/06/12/au-summit-nigeria-others-consider-single-currency-passport/

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari and his Chadian counterpart Idriss Deby on June 4 vowed to enhance cooperation in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency.
The presidents finally settle for talks in the Chadian presidential palace
According to The Nation, this was contained in a communiqué signed in N’Djamena. Both leaders stressed the importance of making the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) fully operational to ensure maximal effectiveness.
Buhari’s media aide Garba Shehu provided in a Thursday statement that the two leaders also urged the international community to support the countries in their anti-terrorism battle.
“Both Heads of State agreed that the war on Boko Haram should be supported by emergency development initiatives in areas affected by this insurgency group. This will help to overcome the harmful effects faced by local populations.”
Nigeria’s president praised the Chadian troops involved in the fight against Boko Haram, Premium Times adds.
“Your troops have stood shoulder to shoulder and fought gallantly with ours in the fight against the forces of evil. This is a remarkable show of good neighbourliness, which we must reinforce in the years ahead.”
Buhari, who was on his first visit to Chad after the official inauguration, said he would return to Nigeria with the assurance that Nigeria and Chad are poised to intensify their cooperation.
Deby on his part praised his Nigerian colleague for the “wise decision” to relocate the military command centre from Abuja to Maiduguri.Meanwhile sad news are reaching us from Maids, Borno state capital, where a female suicide bomber attacked the army checkpoint killing many soldiers. http://www.naij.com/453326-bh-nigeria-and-chad-agree-to-strengthen-cooperation.html

Politics › Prostitutes Demand From Buhari To Legalize Their Trade by priiince(op): 5:59pm On Jun 04, 2015 |
More than 500 commercial sex workers rallied in Abuja, demanding to legalize their trade in wake of recent police raids, when more than 3,000 prostitutes have been arrested.
The prostitutes gathered under the slogans “Legalize prostitution now” and “Allow us to hustle for our daily bread”, protesting discrimination and harassment from male law enforcement representatives.
No fewer than three thousand commercial sex workers have been arrested for the last 90 days in Abuja in raids carried out by the Special Task Force on City Cleaning and Management. Women representing the National Association of Nigerian Prostitutes expressed their dismay at what they call indiscriminate arrests and the way they are molested by different task forces on a daily basis.
“We are Nigerians too and we only go about seeking our daily livelihood, so I see no reason why they should be harassing, arresting us and extorting money from us,” told one of the female rally participants. “These same men are the ones who patronize us but during the day, they will be molesting us.What crimes have we committed? Many of us are graduates who could not secure jobs, so we hustle to make ends meet. We have families and responsibilities to meet, so they should allow us to work and make money.”
She also claimed that the prostitutes are better people than thieves and corrupt politicians. Sex workers demand from the government either legalize prostitution or provide them with some decent jobs.
The Special Task Force on City Cleaning and Management in the Federal Capital Territory, has arrested no fewer than three thousand commercial sex workers in the last 90 days in Abuja.
This was disclosed in a statement by the assistant director/chief press secretary (FCT), Muhammad Sule. http://www.naij.com/453256-prostitutes-demand-from-buhari-to-legalize-their-trade.htmlCc lalasticlala

Politics › Buhari To Unveil Comprehensive National Youth Empowerment Programme Soon by priiince(op): 5:52pm On Jun 04, 2015 |
resident Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said his administration would soon unveil a comprehensive national youth empowerment programme to address youth employment, insecurity and other social vices.
Buhari disclosed this at the swearing-in of 2015 Batch “A” (Stream II) National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Lagos.
The president spoke through by Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, who was also was represented by Dr Aderemi Desalu, the state Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties.
Buhari said that the programme would be anchored on the model provided by the NYSC scheme.
He urged them to take advantage of the highly beneficial youth empowerment scheme provided by his government and non-governmental organisations for self-sustenance.
“As we have promised Nigerians, my administration will soon unveil a comprehensive national youth empowerment programme anchored on the model provided by the NYSC scheme.
“Our goal is to comprehensively address youth employment, insecurity and other social vices prevalent amongst our youths.
“As a globally recognised scheme, the role of corps members, as change agents, will be properly articulated and harnessed for the benefit of our citizens across the country,’’ the president said.
Buhari assured Nigerians that the fight against insurgency and terrorism would be more decisive and purposeful.
According to him, “our commitment is to quickly restore peace in the affected areas and guarantee the security of lives and property of every Nigerian, including corps members’’.
The president also urged corps members to brace up and be ready to make useful contributions to the cause of national development.
Mr Cyril Akhanemhe, Lagos State Coordinator of NYSC, had earlier said that 2,500 corps members, comprising 825 male and 1,675 female, were participating in the programme in Lagos.
Akhanemhe said that the Batch “A” was divided into two streams due to large number of graduates deployed to the state and the camp space constraint.
He appealed to the state governor to assist NYSC in renovating the camp.
The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilola, who was represented by Justice Oluwatoyin Oyekan-Abdulahi, administered the oath of allegiance on the corps members.
