PropertiesRe: Reconstruction Of A Collapsing 3 Bedroom Block Of 8 Flats At Umuahia by princechigzy(op): 5:26pm On Jan 02, 2016
Notice:
For the Column Base, we are using Y12 and for the Column, we are using Y16. For strength, the bending schedule for the base shows Y12 returned as a capped basked totaling 24nos at 1500mm spaced at 125mm...the weight is tremendous when carried.

For the column, the bending schedule is 12 nos Y16 at 8inches spacing bound by a Y8 ring. The column was designed to withstand load stress and the column base to withstand downward movement.

This is the scenario we want to create: Imagine a rigid flat Tray sitting on 10 packets of match box erected vertically & loaded, supporting this tray carrying 15 cans of Coca Cola Drink.

Since the foundation is considered weak, we are supporting the building with these massive columns. The total number of columns to be put in place is 14. 6nos in front, 4nos at the back and 2nos at each side.

Starting the first face of reinforcing and strengthening the house with double size columns, the Fitter and the Carpenter gets to work bending the reinforcement rods according to the bending schedule and the carpenter forming the wood-works.

The columns thickness are meant to flush with the existing walls so as not to deface the house. Our action are to present the building as new building at the end without anyone suspecting that it was worked on.

Going Further, after an indepth analysis, we've decided to to tackle the project headlong but in stages as listed below:

First Stage: Insert massive columns with a large base. The Columns measure: 500mm x 225mm with a total length of 15ft and the column base measuring: 1500mm x 1500mm x 300mm sitting on a concrete blinding of 50mm and a Sharp Sand base of 200mm to resist movement.

Second Stage: Construct and Place 3000mm x 1200mm x 300mm massive Sub-surface retaining drain like wall 5m from the north elevation of the building. This Sub-Surface retaining drain like wall will span a total of 50m, this is to prevent the ground water moving from the top of the slope to make contact with the building foundation.

Third Stage: Tear down the existing front foundation with the ground floor super-structure only at the front and Rework the entire front foundation measuring 26.7m to the both sides measuring 2.7m each. Raise the super-structure again, Under-pin some section of the partitioning walls in the ground floor, unearth the foundation filling at some points and refill, compact and cast the DPC. Reinforce 10 existing columns in the building and finally, finish the ground floor.

Its a multi-floor block of 8 flats built 6 years ago but on a wrong foundation type for such building and soil type. I will give a brief description of every aspect of the building before the reconstruction works:

CONTRACTOR: KDI Structures Ltd.
CLIENT: Can't disclose for want of Security.
PROJECT TITLE: Reconstruction of the failed section of a multi-floor 3 bedroom block of 8 flats.
LOCATION: Umuahia, Abia State.
PROJECT COST: N16.7million
DURATION: 4 months (This is because the works will be done in stages to ensure the curing duration for every concrete work is met before any other work is carried out).
BUILDING SIZE: 26.7m X 11.2m.
NATURE OF THE SITE: Sloppy with very shallow ground water level.

Geotechnical analysis has been done on the site and below are the results:
Ground water level: 1m at BH2 & 1.5m at BH1.
Particle size distribution: Sandy-clay to Pure shale seen between 0.5m - 4m at BH1 and Sandy-clay to shale seen between 0.5m - 3.2m at BH2. the top soil showed a high level of moisture at 0.2m - 0.5m at BH2.
Soil Load Bearing Capacity: 32kN/m2 - 310kN/m2

Structural Engineering Analysis carried out on the building revealed that the total Load from the building is 200kN/m2 which is within the laod bearing capacity range of the Soil.

FOUNDATION TYPE: Strip foundation with varying depth of 5ft - 6.7ft at different points because of the slope but the mistake was the chaining beam wasn't anchored to the columns and the foundation beam wasn't reinforced. The entire building foundation is immersed in ground water to a depth level of 1.5m - 2.2m from the north elevation to the south elevation. due to this reasons, DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENT took place shown by multiple structural failures and massive cracks, entire failure of the front section of the foundation, slight tilting of the entire building, failure of the DPC section at the sitting and dinning room for the 2 ground floor flats.

To avert further failure, Anchor bars has been place at a spacing not greater that 450mm at the every point in the ground floor and to also serve as a means of artificial support system to permit for reconstruction works.

Journalism is completely grounded in Nigeria. Some particular newshub are paid only to lie and cripple the government by feeding the mass with false information. Dailypost copied this lie from breakingtime word by word, line by line.

All the cells, organisations, society, group and people that wish and propell negative information in the name of painting the government black will have their lives hit hard with negative impression. Everyone that promote terrorism either by financing or promote dubious information shall die
Which you made this statement at the beginning of this year or end of last year. But coming now, its as useless as ever because journalism has completely grounded Nigeria leading to the general Elections.

PoliticsPresident Goodluck Jonathan: 2015 Most Mentioned Name Of The Year by princechigzy(op): 11:04pm On Dec 21, 2015
No doubt, the immediate past president of Nigeria, President Ebele Goodluck Jonathan GCFR, has earned himself the 'Most Mentioned name of the year 2015.

Months leading to the general Elections, he saw his name mentioned so widely both Nationally & Internationally. His defeat at the April Polls saw another spike in the mentioning of his name alongside President Buhari. Whether it was for negative reasons or for positive reasons, he has enjoyed a large appeal and Name mentioning.

The coming into power by the APC led Government has seen President Goodluck Jonathan being mentioned more by the APC and the Government. The populace isn't left out in contributing to the Name mentioning. GEJ or President Goodluck has been on the lips of many either blaming or accusing him or eulogizing and extolling him.

On the Social media, for every 100 - 300 words mention, the work 'GEJ' is mentioned at average of 30% - 40%, whether for hate speech, comment or posts or for positive affronts.

Every inability of the Present Administration in tackling Nigeria's Problem has a mention of the 'GEJ' or President Jonathan.

Every recourse to democracy in the recent has the mention of the word 'GEJ', either as a hero or a valian.

Thought or touted to be the most celebrated Past President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Ebele Azikiwe Goodluck Jonathan, has won to himself this year: Vanguard Man of the Year together with President Buhari and also the Conspicuous '2015 MOST MENTIONED NAME OF THE YEAR'

Thank you! Someone here said 7 days. I asked cos I wanted to know how long the OP waited for the concrete to cure. The books I read said 28 days though. But I will be fine with at least 21 days for either decking or lintels and beams
Standard Concrete curing duration is 28 days to attain 25N/m strength for every kind of concrete work: Beam, Column, Slab e.t.c. Though the strength value differs depending on mix ratio and mix materials but a range of 23N/m to 25N/m is perfectly suitable to carry any kind of dead or life load in the entire construction.

Ugo Chikieze wrote :

THE BAYELSA ELECTION, A LESSON FOR THE IGBOS:
I have been following events in the Bayelsa state since Saturday and I think it's high time we Igbos woke up and learn our lessons. What is happening in Bayelsa state shows that the Bayelsans have moved on. They are no longer tied to the apron of PDP and GEJ. That state is one of the smallest states in the country and it's the home state of the former president (GEJ), yet the result of the election held since Saturday have not been announced officially till now. I thought the PDP would have swept off the whole votes just like they did during the presidential election, but to my amazement the APC is also gathering considerable votes there. I know PDP may eventually emerge winner in the election, but my point is that we Igbos should wake up and stop crying more than the bereaved cos even the bereaved have moved on.
Other regions have moved on and have even started integrating themselves into this PMB administration to ensure they remain relevant and not schemed out if things, while some of my people are still holding themselves down and throwing hate speeches here and there.
Other region are already preparing for 2019, some are already gearing up for 2023, while my people have failed to arise and shake off GEJ and his failed administration. By 2019 now, we will begin to run helter-skelter and start last minute preparation and when we loose again, we will say we are hated by others but we forget that we are the ones holding ourselves down now that others are already preparing ahead.
The Igbos have enjoyed more "juicy" appointments in the past 16 years of this democratic dispensation, yet none of the appointees or elected officials performed exceptional well for us to present him/her as presidential candidate. But look at the likes of Fashola, Fayemi, Kwakwanso, El Rufai, etc they are all potential presidential candidates going forward cos their achievements speak for them. Tell me the achievements of. Orji Uzor Kalu, T.A Orji, Sam Egwu, Chimaroke Nnamani, Mbadinuju, etc.... none of them made a mark in their various states, yet we leave them and keep pointing fingers to other regions and saying they are our problem.
I advise we wake up and begin to align ourselves strategically with other region now cos we can never produce a president in this country if we continue like this.
While some misguided elements are busy shouting Biafra, and claiming that South south is part of their Biafra, the southsouth have denounced the whole Biafra thing publicly and I understand that just last weekend, Nyesom Wike of River State, named a stadium in River State after Yakubu Gowon. Does that not tell you somethinghuh?
The golden rule says 'DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT YOU WILL LIKE THEM TO DO UNTO YOU'..... Love begat love, hate begat hate. Don't expect love from others when you give them hatred, don't expect them to vote for your candidate when you keep calling them animals that live in the zoo.
"Give and it shall be given unto you" whatever you give to others is what they will give back to you GOOD MEASURES, PRESSED DOWN, SHAKING TOGETHER AND RUNNING OVER.
He who has ears let him hear, Wisdom is profitable to direct.... I rest my case...
Sounds more like a broken record. To you, supporting APC or aligning with PMB means to move on. You are an Igbo nepotic! If the Igbo's choose to clamour for their inalienable right or choose not to be relevant in this administration, does that mean that they have not moved on. Indeed they have moved on and that's why they are agitating for self determination. Stop bereaving yourself of non-supporting of this Administration by the Igbo's.

I am not really in support of using wood extensively because of deforestation effect of extensive use of timber.

I think we need to start looking at bamboo the wonder grass, which can be processed into different product such as wall panels, flooring materials, roof truss, wall partitioning stud. etc.

The technology available in other third world nation like Colombia and China can be put to use extensively in this regard.

Bamboo grow rapidly in Nigeria, such material will make building construction cheaper and affordable for majority of Nigerians.
My Engineer, your idea on this is simply mind blowing. I have never thought in this regard before, making sense deeply.
