Nice one guys. But I'll advice against teaching electronics with modules or kits. Let people use vero boards to build circuits so they will understand bus connections, filtering and interfacing signal levels. These kits hide too many details and make you dependent on them.

@spikeC what chips do you work with? As per controllers I use stm32s and for FPGAs I use spartan 6/ kintex 7.

Do you use vero board with stm32 and FPGA? kits and modules helps you to learn coding faster. If your code works In your kit, you can build the hardware on vero board

I will be covering microcontrollers which can replace any digital IC and will definately needs a circuit board to implement. i will also teach how to produce a PCB locally within a twinkle of an eye.

I stand to be corrected, FPGA is not really common here in nigeria and they dont have good market here. they are not easy to configure and uses HDL(hardware description language) which is nothing like assembly language or C. they are not mentioned at all in most universities and its not part of their curriculum. In my own point of view, we need to use a microcontroller to begin learning embedded systems because its what students are taught in and close to what everybody is familiar with(a microprocessor). then later anybody who is not satisfied with the functionality of microcontroller can go further to learn FPGA.

If you still feel we need a FPGA more than a microcontroller at this time, you can give us a brief tutorial on it and let us compare and contrast.

The story is true but it is only in Enugu-Ezike. The summary is that the village Enugu-Ezike (or their deity) don't accept bastards or allow cheating wives. if you are a guy (from anywhere) and have a girl friend from the village, if you impregnate her you must collect the child from the lady after birth because if not the lady or the child may either run mad or die. About 5 years ago, something happened that confirm this. This is a true life story. A woman from Enugu-Ezike came to a family in my place and asked of a man, they told her that the man died after biafra war,she started crying. They asked her why she was crying. She said that during the war, they hide in our place and she became the man's girl friend and he impregnate her. After the war they went back to their place and she gave birth to the child. The child was a boy. When the boy grows up and married he became seriously sick. When they tried different hospitals no improvement, they went to a herbalist and he told them that the man is not from their place. The guy chased the mother out to go and find his real father.

This reminds me, has anyone used solder paste for surface mount device in naija? If yes where and how did you buy it? I was trying to design some PCBs for some micro SMD chips but couldn't continue due to lack of solder paste.

In case you want to know more about solder paste:

Solder paste is a sticky grey substance that is somewhat liquid - well that's a paste now isn't it... Pretty much lead and tin mixed together with flux and some other magic ingredients. We use Easy 256 from Kester. Why? It's a No-Clean paste which means after you are done reflowing the board, you're done! No need to wash the board. Any solder paste will do.

One of the main problems is getting the paste. A 500g jar can cost from $50-$200 which is bad enough. The company you purchase it from will most likely charge you an arm and a leg for overnight shipping, cold packaging, and hazardous handling. Yep, lead is considered hazardous. Who knew?...

The United Nations Security Council has called on Boko Haram to immediately release the more than 200 abducted Chibok schoolgirls and end all violent attacks against Nigeria and its neighbour, Cameroon.

The Security Council in a statement placed on its website after its meeting on Monday also condemned the recent escalation in attacks by the insurgents, expressing concerns that its activities were undermining the peace and stability of the West and Central African region.

“The Security Council demands that Boko Haram immediately and unequivocally cease all hostilities and all abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law and disarm and demobilise,” Chile’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Cristián Melet, declared on Monday while reading a statement approved by the council.

A group called Avaaz had on Friday launched a campaign calling on the UN Security Council to pass an emergency resolution calling for an end to insurgency and the release of the Chibok girls by Boko Haram.

Avaaz is a global web movement “to bring people-powered politics to decision-making everywhere.” The group on Monday had hailed the declaration by the UNSC.

“Boko Haram has butchered its way into the global spotlight and finally the Security Council is reacting. Today’s statement is a critical start and all eyes are now on Nigeria, its neighbours and the international community to put words into comprehensive action to stop 10-year-olds being strapped to bombs or kidnapped in the night; the Campaign Director for Avaaz, Alice Jay, said.

In the statement, the UN Security Council also condemned and deplored all abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law by the insurgents, since 2009, ‘including those involving violence against civilian populations, notably women and children, and demanded “the immediate and unconditional release” of all those abducted by the group, including the over 200 schoolgirls kidnapped in Chibok in Borno State in April last year.

The UN body’s condemnation of the terrorist group follows Boko Haram’s recent suicide bombings on January 10 and 11 in Maiduguri and Potiskum as well as attacks in Baga which resulted in the “massive destruction of civilian homes and significant civilian casualties.”

The UN Human Rights office had emphasised last week that the use of a child to detonate a bomb was “not only morally repugnant but constitutes an egregious form of child exploitation under international law.”

According to media reports, some 80 people, many of them said to be children, were abducted on Sunday in Cameroon in one of the biggest Boko Haram kidnappings to take place outside of Nigeria.

The Council’s statement also cited increasing attacks in the Lake Chad Basin region along Nigeria’s borders and noted that some of Boko Haram’s acts “may amount to crimes against humanity.”

Melet said that the Security Council expressed its concern at the scale of the growing humanitarian crisis enveloping the region due to Boko Haram’s operations which, he said, had “resulted in the large-scale displacement of Nigerians within the country into neighbouring Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.”

“The Security Council underlines the need to bring perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice in accordance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions,” Melet added.
