'nothing more' Ade said aloud now, standing up from Jide's desk where he had unconsciously sat during all that musing down memory lane. 'watch out, am coming for you' Ade said to the thin air, looked around the moderately furnished office, adjusted his tie and blew off the imaginary dust from his shoulders, then waltzed out of Jide's office. When Jide left his office, he headed straight to his father's. It was better to get all the blows today had to offer, he thought. After that wedding incidence, things became far from being cordial between him and his dad, infact it wasn't only their relationship that had been affected, everyone in his family steered clear from him, and if Jide had glowed in it before, he didn't anymore, infact it added to his pains. Because ever since he started craving for a family with Daisy, the cravings for his natural family doubled too. As he walked down to his father's office, which he had rarely entered the past few months, he longed for forgiveness from him for he too was willing to forgive and let go even his grandmother for their interfering acts. 'goodmorning dad' Jide said soon as he stepped into his father's office. 'morning' his father said without taking his attention from the newspaper he was reading. 'you sent for me' Jide said when his father didn't say more. 'yeah' he replied, flipping to another page of the paper 'your grandma sent in some items, am sure you know what else to do' he completed, his attention still on the paper. 'and she couldn't call me herself' Jide replied, a hint of rejection in his tone. That made his father raise his brows in surprise and peer at Jide from the top of the paper he held. But it happened in a flash, even Jide hadn't noticed. 'okay' Jide sighed and headed out, stopping momentarily when he got to the door and glanced back at the still nonchalant stance of his father. When the door to his office closed, Mr. Olukoya dropped the paper he had so much been engrossed with and stared at the door which his son had just shut. It hurt him that his first son had drifted away from him, now he understood why Jide had reacted the way he did and he no longer felt anger towards him. If anything, he wanted to get back to their former mutual relationship. Even though they hadn't been on a very close level then, atleast they weren't this distanced. Right now, he could only wish for his son's love and forgiveness, but he wasn't going to push it, if there was anybody who had pride, arrogance and ego in one make up, then that person was Jide, the very child who had taken after him in these traits. Worst still, his was of a modern dimension, they didn't bend easily. Sighing once more in resignation, Mr. Olukoya went into the business of the day. Chapter 12. Ends ![]() |
mind not the way it appears, pasting it here rids off the formatting. i can also see a tiny bit of typographical error, but can't go back to modify. waiting for it to get the next page, so i can paste the remaining. more still coming ![]() |
The grapevine had it that she, whatever her name was, had been Mama's assistant overseas. And every hand pointed to mama as the brain behind the marriage. Her boss had not been very pleased to be married then and even now, she could bet he still wasn't pleased. Oh well, it was the life of the rich, and they had funny ways of living it. Her boss wasn't the type to give in to gossip and frivolous talk, she sure stood at a risk of running into problems with him if he knew she had been supplying the grapevine tiny details about him. since she didn't want to lose her job, the best thing to do now, was to provide food for him and then start minding her own business. 'where are you headed with your head in the clouds?' Ade asked startling her. He was eyeing her with a flirtatious grin now. 'goodmorning Mr. Ade, am off to get...' 'Its okay, i trust you know where you're going' Ade said uninterested. 'sure' Dorothy replied and made to leave. 'and is he around, your boss?' he asked. 'yeah' she replied making to leave again, but Ade held her hand now. 'you are yet to give me a suitable feedback on my proposal' he said softly. 'with all due respect sir, this is an office and...' she was saying, gently pulling her arms from his hold. 'that's okay' Ade said, slightly irritated and loosen his hold. He didn't care much for low class chicks anyways, he had class and they came in only as alternative. Soon he was waltzing away, not a glance back at her. Dorothy looked scornfully at the retreating figure of Ade, hissed and rolled eye. 'ashawo lo omo' she cursed under her breath and continued her journey. ****** 'hey man, whats up!' Ade said soon as he stepped into Jide's office. Jide didn't look up from the document he was perusing, and didn't act like he'd heard someone speak. 'come on, don't give me that, i only came to say hi' Ade pushed further. Jide hit his desk in anger then. 'I would count it a favor if you just left' he said between clenched teeth. 'calm down dude, am not here for a fight or something' 'your presence alone is repulsive, it makes me feel like hitting the life out of you, so please just leave my office' jide shouted angrily. 'was there something i did?' Ade asked feigning innocence 'i just came to ask if we should expect you at the club tomorrow, or like last week that you...' 'clubbing is the last thing on my mind now!' Jide screamed in exasperation. How was he going to shake Ade off! He wondered in anger. 'relax man, the boys put me to it, i don't feel like seeing you either' Ade replied in disgust. 'good! Then be gone' Jide shouted pointing at the door. 'not after you calm down man!' Ade retorted. What was wrong with the f.ool of man, he thought. He wasn't the only one with dislike issues here! Jide stood up and made for the door, there was no reasoning with the irritating animal. The day when he would get his was so around the corner! he thought angrily. Ade sighed at the retreating figure of Jide and grinned as he banged the door. He was not the least shaken or remorseful, anything he could to get back at Jide was perfect. Their feud dated back to their university days, and even though Ade was sure Jide wasn't aware of it, he still held the grudges nonetheless. He hated Jide's gut, hated the fact that the he was arrogant and yet got away with it. Acting like a spoilt brat everytime, because he was rich and famous in the business scene. While people like him had to struggle for everything - money, status, position, attention and even love. Yes love! That was the bane of contention here. Jide had gotten the girl Ade had loved back then in school, even though now, everyone had splitted ways and moved on, Ade still nursed his defeat. The girl had been attracted to his jide's wealth, and Jide had capitalized on it even though he had known that he (Ade) was interested. It shouldn't matter anymore to him because he was not unto the girl anymore, he bedded more classy chicks now. It was simply a matter of hitting Jide with a dose of his own medicine. He'd totally forgotten about the pretty woman whose wedding he had immensely contributed in. The woman he had had no qualms whatsoever, if she had been forced upon him, and the woman who he'd pleaded with Jide to pretend liking at the wedding then. But now he had realised that she was the perfect bait. Yes, he hadn't given it much thought then because Jide hadn't accepted her, but now, judging by his sudden jealous and protective tendency towards her, he was sure Jide was finally falling. Therefore What Grace had been shrewd enough to notice and wave when he had made advances towards her then, he hoped Daisy would gladly play into. Grace was more like a buddy to him now, too bad, she hadn't made it down the aisle with Jide, not that he cared who married who anyways, It was just a game of little revenge, nothing more |
******** 'Going out today, Daisy' Jide read from a piece of paper lying conspicuously on the Dining. He hadn't meant to eat before leaving for work, sitting down to a meal this days didn't appeal to him. The way Daisy had taunted him about food that Saturday night still left a bile on his tongue, it was just the folded paper that had caught his attention & now he was angry at its content. Jide squeezed the paper into a pulp and flung it angrily at the wall. Daisy was indeed having a field day and really acting up, feeling like she had all the cards to her favour in whatever game she was playing. Today was Thursday and yet the rift between them was far from closing. He was far from normalcy, his feelings threatened to engulf him if any moment. Daisy on her part was making matter worst, she has changed so much. Every move she made these days deliberately teased and taunted him. Where had she gotten those stock of breath taking gowns she wore always at nights anyways? Sighing, he left the dining to the parlour, picked his keys and headed out. He knew where to find Daisy for she had suddenly developed this knack for a session of swimming every morning. True to his words, he sighted Daisy in the pool. Jide had meant to ignore her totally but somehow his feet betrayed and lead him directly towards her & now he was towering over her swimming form. Daisy was doing a backstroke then when she sighted him, but she went on with her activities like he wasn't even there. After some painful seconds, Jide had no other option than to speak else he would just stand there till infinto while this annoying wife of his ignored him totally. 'can i talk to you for a sec' he said with clenched teeth. Daisy swam towards the other end of the pool, rested her back on the wall and wiped the water dripping from her face. 'what about?' she said drily. 'and where do you think you are going later today' he asked. Daisy grinned. 'Is that what this is about?' 'just answer the damn question' Jide retorted. 'I don't think i should answer that, i obliged your request, now leave me alone already' Daisy said sharply and plunged into the water. She was more of an expert in swimming, her long stay in the riverine area of Ijebu-ode had developed her passion for swimming while Boston had perfected her capabilities in the act. Swimming for her was a means of relaxation and keeping in shape. But Throughout those months when she'd been down, she had lost the urge for swimming, but now, it was the first thing she thought of every morning, after Jide anyways. Jide watched the pool in anger and irritation, soon it turned into fright, Daisy was yet to resurface after plunging in a minute ago! Though he wasn't a pro at it, but this length of time to be submerged in water wasn't normal! he panicked. He couldn't dare it anyways. Just then Daisy resurfaced gasping for air, her face held excitement but it changed into a frown when she saw Jide crouching by the pool, a worried look on his face. 'you're still here?' Daisy said 'Please be gone already, i don't owe you an explanation!' she screamed. Jide stood up, an angry grimace on his face, he shook his head and headed for his car. 'have a wonderful day at work today, because i definitely will!' Daisy called out to him in mockery. And with a smug feeling, she plunged into the water again. This is just the beginning! she thought. ******* Jide drove into the office complex at about 8am, he had fumed and cursed angrily at defaulters on his way. Even now, he was still angry he ignored the greetings of people he met and marched straight to his office. 'anything for me yet' he asked his secretary soon as he stepped into her office that adjoined his. 'morning sir' she said standing up. 'so...' Jide asked impatiently 'No incoming invoice yet but your father requested your presence soon as you come' 'he's in already' Jide simply said and matched on to his office. Seconds later he thrust his head through the door. 'and get me something to eat' he barked and banged the door. 'yes sir' Dorothy replied. She had been making to sit when his order came. She came out of her desk now and made for the door, contemplating what she would get her boss for breakfast. Before now all she had bothered about was getting his lunch, but since this week had began, he'd kept asking breakfast from her. She wondered what could possibly go for breakfast in an office. It wasn't a secret that her boss and the American wife he had wedded that Saturday were not in good terms. Infact she could confidently attest to the fact that her boss was still seeing his former girlfriend. Courtesy of the calls she received from her on his behalf. If anyone asked her, Grace was very okay, atleast she occupied a respectable position at a media outfit, but she wondered why her Boss had suddenly gotten married to another woman. Poor Grace! But where had this his wife even come from? |

'Bree, are you even listening' Daisy asked noticing her friend far and nonchalant stance' 'ain't it another one of those stories' she said drily shaking her heads. 'much much better!' Daisy countered. 'okay, am all ears' Brenda said with a nonchalant tone. What were friends for? She shrugged. Daisy would equally listen to her silly tales when she had to tell. But that was if actually she HAD one. 'okay! It was just about the time i cut the call, then he walked closer....' Daisy went on with the narrative of the night before, details by details. Brenda's interest piqued and picked with every detail she heard. 'oh my God! She exclaimed now. 'He didn't actually said that!' 'every word!' Daisy answered. 'oh my God!' she exclaimed again 'and how did you react this time?' she asked. 'better than i could ever imagine!' 'with you, i wouldn't count on better' Brenda said a sceptic look on her face. 'trust me when i say I was better, i was better' Daisy said. Immediately her countenance changed into a forlorn look. 'it was as if his words untied a cord in my heart, what i felt then was revenge...' 'revenge? Hmm, that's a starter' Brenda interrupted. They were indeed heading somewhere. 'i also felt like hitting him hard, just the way he did me. I want him to suffer more' Daisy continued with vehemence. 'easy now, are we not talking about the same Jide here?' Brenda asked surprise. Daisy gave an i-couldn't-care-less look. 'whoa! what actually hit him?' asked Brenda. 'i dont care' Daisy replied drily. 'maybe he was drunk as you said and not thinking straight' 'maybe. But what i saw in his eyes then' she humped. 'it can't be mistaken. 'like seriously! he couldn't possibly be in love with you now! Maybe he's just lusting, that's pretty normal right?' 'lust or love, they mean the same to them guyz' Daisy stood up now, '...and if he feels he can be all over my bum just like that, then 'he got a long way to go'' she completed singing the tune to the chorus of Cassie's 'long way to go' music. 'that's the attitude!' Brenda shouted excitedly and stood up too. 'wait wait, i got that song in my collection' 'play it girl!' Daisy screamed excitedly. Warming up for the dance. Cassie's 'long way to go to go' music rang loud from Brenda's Blackberry Porshe, and soon the friends were singing along excitedly. When the chorus came up, Daisy's voice rang the loudest. 'you claim that you're so hot that you got skills in the bedroom, say you wanna come see me, that your little girlfriend wanna be me...' They sang and danced happily, later pushing the table aside to create space. And after cassie's piece rolled by, other songs came up, they danced with no less fervour. At the end of the visit, Brenda and Daisy mapped out a day to go clubbing. ******** |
Soon, two pairs of eyes fixed at the screen in excitement, while their hands dug into the popcorn dish at intervals. The subject of their excitement, a movie premiere on Mnet. When the film ended two hours later, the girls couldn't stop talking about the heights and fall of the movies: who should have done this or that; why the girl hadn't shown the other her stuff, how if it had been her (Brenda), she would have done more than required, bla bla bla... Daisy hadn't contributed much herself, she was no longer a fan of romance stories, they served better as entertainment to her, but she couldn't allow herself be taken in by the fantastic life they portrayed. Her life was tale enough. The kind of love people in the movies felt, was scripted, it told nothing about real life. And with a sigh she watched Brenda chatter on and on about the movie, Daisy thought Brenda needed an experience just like hers to change her mentality about love. However, she knew her to be wiser enough to tell apart fairytale from reality, unlike her. Brenda on her part, hadn't noticed that she had lost her friend in the movie frenzy. She kept on her analysis and criticism until she noticed her friend was quiet. 'why are you suddenly quiet?' she asked, her hands caught in midair. 'really? Am I?' Daisy asked. 'ofcourse you were!' she said her hand resting on her laps now. 'you've not said much about the movie' she pressed further. 'i said something! but since i don't know what to say again, i locked up' Daisy shrugged avoiding her eyes while she busied with the empty bowl of popcorn. 'Dee has nothing more to say about a movie as sizzling as that? Brenda scoffed. 'And stop already with that bowl, its empty!' she screamed in anger. Daisy smiled and left the bowl. 'you are not the Daisy who left Boston' Brenda started. 'why? I've grown tail, horns and sharp nails' Daisy joked. 'come of it, am serious! You seem to have this ambience of of...' she paused trying to get the suitable expression, seconds later, she was still grappling with the right words. '...you mean an air of maturity' Daisy offered drily. Brenda snapped her finger 'yeah! something like that' she said. Daisy smiled again. 'must be cos am married' she added drily again. 'oh! come of it, that's not the reason!' 'well...i think i know what you mean, it is I who changed, am conscious of it. Its just that somehow i've learnt that life isnt all like the movies atall. And though I've always seen them as a means of escape, but allowed them shape my perception of reality. I mean i wont be in this mess, if i knew that i am not a Sarah Parker, or some Angelina Jolie, or even a Mercy Johnson acting out a part where the crushed upon, suddenly turns around and say: Oh Daisy, you've loved me enough, why don't i love you back! I mean the silliness of my decision is annoying. I was coming to save the beloved? But he sure don't need my salvation, and now am the one in need of saving' Daisy ended, her body shaking in anger. 'oh my baby is finally growing up!' Brenda said clapping her hands. 'am not joking here' Daisy protested feigning anger. 'that girlfriend! is exactly what I've been trying to pass across ever since!' Daisy rolled her eyes then and sighed. 'reality bite i guess' she said. 'you can said that again! But then again, life's a bit.ch, and only the bitchty can stand up to her' 'jeez! Where did you get that phrase from?' Daisy exclaimed. 'your girl here's been building up her vocab' 'with the wrongest words i see' Daisy said rolling her eyes. 'just don't tell dad i said any bitchty words again' 'the oldman's on your neck?' Daisy asked picking up the remote. 'stale news' Brenda said drily. 'asking me to come join the company and all'. 'that's why you came back anyways?' Daisy said her attention still on the television. 'yeah, but i gotta have some time to myself for a while! That man got to like chilax! Few days in the country and he's talking about managing the branch firm! For pete's sake! Am not a dude or something!' 'you should be glad and not complain' Daisy said. 'don't be all good girl on me puleaseee!' she replied snapping her fingers. A pause and then: 'that reminds me, with this boring work talk and all, is that where HE went to?' she asked. Daisy lightly flung the remote on the table. 'like normally' she replied nonchalant. 'yeah normally' Brenda scoffed. 'that reminds me too! something exceptional happened last night, at the hour i called you!' Daisy started excitedly. 'what?' Brenda drawled not a bit excited. To her, it was another vague story of how bold Daisy stood against Jide. If boldness what was Daisy called her skirmishes, then the mice shouldnt be called timid. With the way she had reacted after she found her kitchen in a mess, yet went ahead to cook the culprit a meal! That didn't define boldness to her. Who slaved for ungrateful people anyways! |
Chapter 12. Jide woke up earlier than usual this morning. He hadn't slept a thing the night before. To his irritation and annoyance, he found out that thoughts of Daisy assailed his dreams. In the dreams, he saw daisy laughing at him with scorn and hatred, dressed in that pink gown of hers. At other times, he saw himself drowning in a baseless depth, one he couldn't quite fathom or imagine, even though he hadn't been frightened. Then at those times when his eyes simply refused to close, his heart, to his irritation, seemed to have a mind of its own, analyzing the events of Sunday night which they should have known better to push aside. Jide could not explain why he was suddenly feeling like somethings were missing in his life, like his heart was in a form of pain. Jide really wished the feelings would go, even if only for that night. He wanted to be angry again so he could return to his complacent state, willing that his anger would become the defense shield he needed to fight whatever it was that threatened to engulf him now, but he couldn't seem to keep aflame that part of him, especially when it concerned Daisy. Jide feared that they were the signs of deep affection developing towards his wife and he so wanted to deny it. And at the end, he gave up the fight of trying to stay awake. Having sat most of the morning on his unappealing bed, which seemed to have grown larger to him now. Jide felt it would suddenly swallow him, and he sighed at such foolishness. Jide found himself wishing that somehow, he could be in another room, on another bed with a certain someone, doing some certain things... But then, he mused, if wishes were horses, beggars would get a pleasurable ride on it. But the Daisy he had experienced last night was a transformed one. One that was far from obliging him a ride any time soon. Not that that was what he only craved for anyways. Seeing that his attempts at returning back to sleep were proving futile, Jide decided to use the opportunity to clear up his desk and rid it off unwanted documents and papers. Atleast his wake keep wouldn't amount to nothing, he reasoned. At the end of his self imposed chore, his study became a pool of papers and debris but Jide cared less, certain that he would not return home to the mess, courtesy of Okon. Much later, at around 7am when Jide entered the parlor all set for work, he still wasn't feeling any better, nothing was able to change the fact that he had woken up on the wrong side of the bed. He just cast a distasteful glance towards the dining table, half expecting it to be empty, it wasn't. Still he had no appetite whatsoever. He simply grabbed his car keys on the table and made for the door. He couldn't see Daisy anywhere. Out in the compound, as he made for his car. He sighted Daisy swimming with abandon in the pool. He found himself exhaling in relief, maybe because he had subconsciously nurtured a unknown fear. Whatever it was, Jide didn't deliberate further on it. He just Entered his car, without another glance towards the swimming form of Daisy. However, he paused for a while at the gate and peered undecidedly at the fluttered form of Adamu, who was holding the gate in a bid to restrain it from closing while his employer left. Adamu wondered why his Oga should, uncharacteristic of him, stop at the gate to stare at him. Was it something he did or said? But few seconds later, Jide honked once and zoomed off. He had successfully fought down the momentary urge he had of telling Adamu to notify him through calls if Daisy happened to leave the compound later on. Later, as he caught up with the morning traffic Lagos had to offer. Jide rejoiced at the insight and self control he had exhibited then, thanking his stars that he had not allowed his insane emotions over rule his better judgment and make him do something he would never ever have imagined himself doing. Stalking a woman, nevertheless she was his wife! Then discussing his personal affairs with loud-mouthed Adamu. The shame of it! 'Daisy...' he said calmly to himself then, '...see what you would have made me do' ******** 'Dee come quick, it's about to start!' Brenda excitedly called out. 'just a sec please' Daisy replied from the kitchen. The girls had been warming up all morning to see a movie which had gathered so much hype on Mnet ever since. When Brenda came in later on, Daisy had let her in on the gig and together they waited in anticipation for it. And now, it was about to start. 'oh my God! Daisy screamed at a name displayed on the screen, she was holding a tray containing popcorn and juice. Then Settling it on a table, she hurried to go sit on her favourite place directly opposite the television. |
