The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday adopted electronic transmission of election results, a position that was contained in the Conference Committee report submitted to the chamber. The electronic transmission of election results which is a proviso in clause 53 of the Electoral amendment act places on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the right to transmit results without subjecting their discretion to any other organ as was firstly captured that generated controversy. wasn’t, however, without heated debate which was brought under control by the presiding Senate President. Before the adoption in the Committee of the whole, Senator Adamu Aliero and former governor of Kebbi State in his submission urged Senators to support the amendment in order to strengthen democracy. He said: This is a move that will deepen our democracy and a move that will make the electorate to vote according to their conscience. This will put paid to criminals having their way as people of questionable character can no longer be voted. Senator Smart Adeyemi representing Kogi West opposed the amendment on clause 87 which deals with direct primaries of political parties. He advocated strongly for some political parties who lack the capacity to organise direct primaries. He said it should be left for party executives to conduct indirect primaries. However, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele representing Ekiti Central Senatorial districts said every card-carrying member of a political party should be allowed to vote for their aspirants. According to him, the mode of party primary which is determined by all party members would be more democratic than indirect where a few party executives vote for aspirants. “I support this motion and like to mention specifically that in clause 87 that every card-carrying member of any political party should be able to vote and it is a way of giving power back to the people. "This is not about any political party, every political party will enjoy this, therefore, let every party member have the opportunity to vote who they wanted.” Senator Abdulfatai Buhari representing Oyo North corroborated in his submission, saying those opposed to direct primaries were afraid, wondering that if a contestant was as popular as he thinks, then he or she needed not to be afraid. "Let’s practice democracy in accordance with the global best practices. I see no reason why anybody should be afraid of direct primaries as it goes to solve problems of aspirants. Senator Shuaibu Lau representing Taraba North Senatorial district called for caution in not tieing political parties to a form of conducting primaries. He said the mode of conducting primaries should be left for parties to decide. He maintained: “I agree with amendment of clause 87 which has to do with political party primaries. We must, therefore, not tie parties to one way traffic of conducting primaries and not because there are beliefs that governors are hijacking parties and not free parties to democratically elect their leaders. When the chamber resorted to the committee of the whole, the electronic means of transmitting election results was passed, while political parties are to determine how their primaries are conducted. https://insideimt.org.ng/breaking-senate-adopts-electronic-transmission-of-election-results/

Senator Babafemi Ojudu, the Political Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari has insisted there is no rift between Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu. According to him, both Tinubu and Osinbajo are in the same political family. Ojudu, in a statement on Monday, also noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not given the go-ahead for any politicking. He stated these in reaction to reports and a live TV programme where “two persons supposedly representing Asiwaju Support Group and Osinbajo Support Group were pitched against each other.” Ojudu said: “As a law abiding citizen, Osinbajo will not commence any act in this regard until INEC blows the whistle, and in any case the VP (Osinbajo) has not indicated interest in the 2023 elections.” Ruling out any friction, Ojudu added: ”Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are members of the same party. “Osinbajo regards Tinubu as a respected leader of a political family to which he belongs and will therefore, not for any reason endorse an endeavor that seeks to pitch them against each other.” He further warned those trying to foist a crack among APC’s leaders to desist, as “Osinbajo and Tinubu’s relationship dates way back and it shall continue to wax strong.” https://insideimt.org.ng/there-is-no-bad-blood-between-tinubu-osinbajo-buharis-aide-ojudu/

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved N13.3billion for the take-off of the Community Policing initiative across the country. The president made this known at the opening of a two-day Mid-Term Ministerial Performance Review Retreat organized to assess progress made towards the achievement of the nine key priorities of his administration on Monday in Abuja. President Buhari stated that the approval was part of measures to consolidate efforts aimed at enhancing security nationwide. “We have also approved the sum of N13.3 billion for the take-off of the Community Policing initiative across the Country, as part of measures adopted to consolidate efforts aimed at enhancing security nationwide,’’ he said. He also announced that the Ministry of Defence had been instructed to create a modest military-industrial complex for the local production of weapons to meet some of the requirements of the country’s armed forces. The president explained that the establishment of the industrial complex would address Nigeria’s over-dependence on other countries for military equipment and logistics. According to him, the project is being implemented under the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), a military department responsible for arms manufacture. On other efforts to strengthen national security, the President said it was gratifying to note that Nigeria had received six A-29 Super Tucano. He said the propeller-driven aircraft are being used for training, surveillance and attack by the military. ‘‘As part of the efforts towards strengthening our national security, we have increased investments in arms, weapons and other necessary equipment; expanded the National Command and Control Centre to nineteen states of the Federation; and established a Nigerian Police Trust Fund, which will significantly improve funding for the Nigeria Police Force. ‘‘We have also approved the sum of N13.3 billion for the take-off of the Community Policing initiative across the Country, as part of measures adopted to consolidate efforts aimed at enhancing security nationwide,’’ he said. On the Power Sector, President Buhari noted that the implementation of a ‘Willing Buyer-Willing Seller’ Policy had opened up opportunities for increased delivery of electricity to underserved homes and industries. He expressed the hope that the execution of critical projects through the Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme, would result in achieving the national goal of improved power supply by 2025. On the Petroleum Industry Act signed into law on Aug. 16, the president reiterated his directive to the Implementation Committee to complete all processes for the successful operationalization of the Act within 12 months. The President further revealed that he approved the expansion of the National Social Register (NSP) by one million additional households to empower the youth and other vulnerable groups in the country. The NSP is the official database for the implementation of the Conditional Cash Transfer programme. ‘‘We have established the N75 billion Nigerian Youth Investment Fund created to boost the Nigerian economy through leverage and access to finance for youths. ‘The Fund should serve as a catalyst to unleash the potential of the youth and to enable them to build businesses that will stimulate economic growth and create jobs. “These accomplishments are a testament to the fact that all hands are on deck in establishing a solid foundation for even greater successes in future,’’ he said. The President warned all ministers and permanent secretaries to take seriously all issues relating to the implementation of their mandates towards the attainment of the laudable objectives of the government. The President concluded his address at the opening of the retreat with the unveiling of the Presidential Priorities Performance Management System. He explained that the Performance Management System and Dashboard, which had been in effect since January this year, had provided him with the opportunity to track projects in real-time with live data. ‘‘In our continuing drive to ensure accountability, we have incorporated a Performance Management Framework into the functions of the Central Delivery Coordination Unit for ease of tracking of the Ministerial Deliverables along the lines of the 9 priority areas of this administration. This initiative has provided me with the opportunity to track the performance of all Ministries and by extension my Administration. ‘‘ This process has been in effect since January 2021 and today it gives me great pleasure to unveil the Performance Management System and Dashboard to track projects in real-time with live data and early warning system to proactively resolve bottlenecks,’’ he said. In view of the importance of this year’s retreat, President Buhari announced that he would sit through all the sessions to listen to the cumulative assessment of this administration’s performance over the last two years. He equally expressed his readiness to join in discussions on the best approach and strategies to implement planned policies, programmes and projects that could significantly diversify the economy away from its dependence on oil revenue, while sustaining the current economic growth trajectory. In his remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the retreat would be solution-driven and participatory in nature. He, therefore, urged participants to make useful and constructive contributions to the deliberations. The outcome of the retreat is expected to pave the way to accelerate the delivery of Government policies, programmes, and projects over the remaining 19 months. “Therefore, much is expected of us as Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Strategic Government Agencies if we must deliver on the President’s legacy projects. “I admonish us to participate actively in all sessions of the retreat – asking questions, enriching the conversations with your perspectives, and also thinking critically about adapting key points and lessons from the deliberations, to shape the way we work over the next 19 months. On the performance of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), Mustapha noted that the last two years had been most productive. He revealed that between May 29, 2019, and Aug. 31, 2021, the Council held 52 Meetings and granted 579 approvals comprising of 381 contracts, 110 policies and 88 briefs/notes. “Overall, the total number of Contracts, Policies and Briefs/Notes approved by the Federal Executive Council between Nov. 2015 and Aug. 2021 stand at 1,403 comprising of 878 Contracts, 319 Policies and 206 Briefs/Notes. From the above, the 878 Contracts approved by FEC have mostly targeted the provision of infrastructure, geared towards enabling faster economic growth and development. According to him, the analysis also shows that the government remained focused on its cardinal responsibility of responsively addressing the myriads of needs and challenges of its citizens through the 319 approved policies initiated during the period. “The details of this data are contained in the newly developed Compendium of FEC approvals from Nov. 2015 – Aug. 2021, which is part of the Retreat documents circulated to participants,’’ he added. https://insideimt.org.ng/buhari-approves-n13-3bn-for-take-off-of-community-policing-initiative/

The Spiritual Director, Adoration Ministry Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has claimed there is agitation in the Military and the Police. Mbaka stated this on Sunday while addressing his congregation. He said, “people are not agitating for nothing”, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to “listen to the reason for their agitation”. Mbaka also said that if Buhari puts “the round peg in the round hole”, it will bring an end to banditry in Nigeria. He said: “Children are being killed. Those that are being bombed are Nigerians. Nobody is going to give an award to a father or mother for killing his or her children. The solution is simple. Put the round pegs in the round hole and banditry will die. “People are not agitating for nothing. Listen to the reason for their agitation. “Because even in the Military, there is agitation. In the police, church and family, there is agitation. Mbaka only claimed “the Spirit of God is not happy with our leaders” and he cannot be quiet while Nigerians suffer. “The Spirit of God is not happy with our leaders no matter how they want to paint it. Even if all the men of God are silent, the Spirit of God cannot be silent. “If the poor masses are crying, we men of God must cry with them. Because they call us father. “I cannot be calm and my children are being killed.”

However,h Hearn has claimed that the rematch will take place in the UK. Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has confirmed that he has triggered his rematch clause with Oleksandr Usyk. Joshua lost his WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO belts to Usyk via a unanimous decision last week. “Today we officially triggered the rematch for the Oleksandr Usyk fight, which we’ll see early next spring. “Back in the game and we’re looking for him to become three-time world champion. A few niggles in camp for AJ, Usyk had a bad cut, it’s officially triggered, we’ll sit down with K2 Promotions and I think March is when you’ll see that fight. “This was a disappointing loss to a pound-for-pound great. We don’t need to get back in the game with 10-rounders, he needs to rip those belts off Usyk,” Hearn told DAZN. https://insideimt.org.ng/anthony-joshuas-rematch-with-usyk-officially-confirmed/
