A former Nigerian boxer and first-ever Olympic medalist, Nojim Maiyegun has died at the age of 83.

A confidante, Rudolfine F Soultan, confirmed the death of the boxer in a Facebook post on Monday.

The post read, “My Jimmy died. I can’t say more about this right now because it’s just horrible. The day after tomorrow, we would have been together for 17 years.”

Maiyegun as per The Cable breathed his last on Monday morning at his base in Vienna, Austria.

Maiyegun was reportedly battling an unnamed illness for a couple of months.

At 23, he won Nigeria’s first Olympic media (Bronze) in the light-heavyweight boxing category at Tokyo 1964.

In the second round of the competition, he defeated Great Britain’s William Robinson in just one minute and 59 seconds.

He defeated Tom Bogs of Denmark in the quarter-final before losing to France’s Joseph Gonzalez in the semi-final.

Maiyegun and Poland’s Józef Grzesiak settled for the bronze.

Two years later, in 1966, he won another bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

A six-year-old boy missing for four days was found alive in a forest in a mountainous part of northern Vietnam, police said Thursday.

The child was reported missing on Saturday after he failed to return home with his siblings from a celebration at a relative’s house in Yen Bai province.


Police in Lam Giang commune launched a search for the boy and “even dried up a pond as they were afraid he had fallen,” an officer, who declined to give his name, told AFP

Over the past four days, more than 200 people joined a search for the boy, according to state media.

He was finally found on Wednesday, the police official said.

“We were told that the boy was tired. They gave him things to eat and checked his health. He is ok now,” the police official told AFP.

State media reported that a man had heard crying and discovered the exhausted boy covered in mud, sitting in a cassava bush in the forest.

Lam’s mother, Ly Thi Phai, told the VietnamNet news site of her relief.

“I was so happy that my child had returned alive,” she said.

“I cried because he looked thinner and weaker than before he disappeared.”

According to state media, the boy said he had become lost in the forest and the more he walked, the more disorientated he became.

To survive, he said he drank water from a stream and picked leaves and wild fruits he recognised.

Asake recently released the tracklist for his third album 'Lungu Boy' which will feature guest appearances from Wizkid, Central Cee, Stormzy, and Ludmina.

In 2024, Asake released 'Only Me' and 'Wave' featuring Central Cee which is one of the tracks on the 'Lungu Boy'.

The album comes ahead of Asake's upcoming 'Lungu Boy' tour which will include stops at the famous O2 Arena which he previously headlined in 2023 and the iconic Madison Square Garden which will make him only the fourth Nigerian artist to headline the venue.

Asake's upcoming album will be his third in three years in what is a breathless run of hits for the era-defining superstar.

Since breaking into the mainstream, Asake has been on a steady ascension. His debut album 'Mr. Money With The Vibes' won the Album of the Year prize at the 2023 Headies Awards. His second album 'Work of Art' had the hit single 'Lonely At The Top' which set the record for longest charting song on TurnTable Top 100.
