The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has revealed that the Nigerian Government is giving national awards to those who “stole the country dry”. Speaking on Saturday in a graduation ceremony at Pace Setters Academy in Abuja, Peter Obi stated that while the country is busy awarding looters, it is failing to recognise the roles played by teachers in moulding the “leaders of the tomorrow.” adding that the government have low understanding of the importance of education. His words read in part, “Education is the most important thing any nation needs. It is the foundation of development. If you don’t have an educated citizenry, you can’t have a healthy society. You can’t pull people out of poverty without education. This is because the more people you ensure get education, the more they would be able to pull themselves out of poverty. “We can’t have 20 million out-of-school children and start to talk about development tomorrow. That is why we need to invest in education. During our campaigns, we said we will invest in public schools and private schools. We talked about having a budget for every child in a way that the budget for each child will be paid to their respective schools, whether private or public. Peter Obi continued by saying in his term as the governor of Anambra State, he didn’t have private school because there is no private child in Nigeria - while reinstating that he equipped schools with computers and other necessary facilities. And if he have his way, education will have the highest budget and teachers will be celebrated. "They are the ones moulding the children." He said. While referencing a teacher, Akeem Badaru, from St Michaels School, Ogun State - for winning the Cambridge best teacher award globally. Obi said, “Many Nigerians did not know. We are busy giving national awards to those who stole the country dry,” Source: https://www.zionie.com/read/fg-giving-national-awards-to-looters-peter-obi-says |

An officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, identified simply as Lamba, has been accused of shooting a protester, Jacob Bamgbola, to death in the Idigbo community, Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State. It was gathered that Bamgbola was conveying his sister’s daughter on a motorcyclist to a destination in the community when some immigration officers manning a checkpoint on the expressway stopped him along the Ijowun end of the Idiroko Expressway and demanded N200 before allowing him to continue his journey. It was reported that Bamgbola refused to accede to the officers’ request, noting that he did nothing wrong to warrant him being allegedly extorted of N200. The situation led to an argument and while some of the officers were busy interrogating other motorists, Benjamin took advantage of the fact that much attention was not on him and zoomed off. On getting to his sister’s place, Bamgbola dropped his niece and proceeded to inform some youths in the community about his encounter with the immigration officers. A source in the community had told Punch reporter that the youths, some of whom had also experienced similar encounters bordering on alleged extortion by immigration officers on the road, mobilised other youths to the house of a chief in the community, Moses Faleye, to protest about the development. The source said during the protest, the immigration officers stormed the premises and while trying to disperse the protesters, allegedly shot Bamgbola dead. He said, “Bamgbola went to carry his sister’s daughter and on his way back, he met immigration officers on the road. Those officers are always there at the checkpoint. They stopped him and wanted to collect N200 from him but he refused. “He told them that he is a son of Otun village and why should he pay them anything. After he left, he complained to some youths and the youths mobilised themselves to the Baale’s house to register their grievances over the activities of the officers.
