Breaking the news on Monday in Abuja, the country's capital, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development stated that it was “deeply concerned to announce the confirmation of an anthrax case in Niger State, Nigeria." adding that the disease was detected in a farm in Niger State.

The statement reads, “On July 14, 2023, the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria was notified of animals manifesting symptoms of a suspected case of anthrax in a farm in Suleja, Niger State.

“The case was in a multi-specie animal farm comprising of cattle, sheep and goats located at Gajiri, along Abuja-Kaduna expressway Suleja Local Government Area, Niger State, where some of the animals had symptoms including oozing of blood from their body openings – anus, nose, eyes, and ears.”

The ministry stated that a rapid response team comprising federal and states’ One Health Professional Team visited the farm to conduct preliminary investigations and collected samples from the sick animals.

“Subsequent laboratory tests by the National Veterinary Research Institute laboratory confirmed the diagnosis, marking the first recorded case of anthrax in Nigeria in recent years and after the report of an outbreak of anthrax in Northern Ghana a few weeks ago. PoliticsSENATE: National Assembly Members Are Entitled To N230 Million Palliative Each by progoh(op):
Oh yes, this is where we find ourselves.

465 National Assembly members will share 110 billion naira. If the money is divided proportionally, each member will go home with about N236,559,139 (two hundred and thirty six million, five hundred and fifty nine thousand, one hundred and thirty nine naira)

While 12 million Nigerians will share 500 billion naira. You can do the maths

However, there are reactions from different national bodies and well meaning Nigerians - describing it as wicked and insensitive.

Meanwhile, the Senate is defending their palliative, urging Nigerians to see it as "partners in progress."

PoliticsIPOB Insists Coalition Of Northern Groups Must Face Trial For Herdsmen Killing by progoh(op): 3:36pm On Jul 16, 2023
Special counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor has said the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) must face trial for all the “atrocities and killings done by Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria”.

The lawyer made the statement via his twitter account on Sunday - while reacting to the CNG’s appeal to President Bola Tinubu not to release the detained separatist leader.

CNG had warned President Tinubu not to be bordered about the threats of IPOB and asked that Kanu should be tried for all his “crimes”.

On Saturday, the northern group, through its spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, lamented the level of insecurity in the southeastern part of Nigeria, urging federal authorities to resist the campaigns of blackmail to use Kanu's release as a precondition for long-term peace in the country.

Suleiman wants the federal authorities to disregard what he termed 'unpatriotic' calls by Igbo leaders for Kanu’s release and remain resolute in prosecuting him.

Ejimakor reacting to the statement by the northern group said; since CNG vehemently objected to the release of Kanu, the Nigerian government must also charge the group for accessory to murder.

He said the CNG, as the umbrella body of northern groups including herders’ unions, should answer for the crimes committed by herdsmen in the country.

“As the umbrella body of Northern groups which includes HERDSMEN, CNG is vicariously complicit in every murder committed by herdsmen & thus must face trial as an accessory to murder,” the IPOB lawyer wrote on his verified Twitter page.

PoliticsPETER OBI: FG Giving National Awards To Looters by progoh(op): 7:55am On Jul 16, 2023
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has revealed that the Nigerian Government is giving national awards to those who “stole the country dry”.

Speaking on Saturday in a graduation ceremony at Pace Setters Academy in Abuja, Peter Obi stated that while the country is busy awarding looters, it is failing to recognise the roles played by teachers in moulding the “leaders of the tomorrow.” adding that the government have low understanding of the importance of education.

His words read in part, “Education is the most important thing any nation needs. It is the foundation of development. If you don’t have an educated citizenry, you can’t have a healthy society. You can’t pull people out of poverty without education. This is because the more people you ensure get education, the more they would be able to pull themselves out of poverty.

“We can’t have 20 million out-of-school children and start to talk about development tomorrow. That is why we need to invest in education. During our campaigns, we said we will invest in public schools and private schools. We talked about having a budget for every child in a way that the budget for each child will be paid to their respective schools, whether private or public.

Peter Obi continued by saying in his term as the governor of Anambra State, he didn’t have private school because there is no private child in Nigeria - while reinstating that he equipped schools with computers and other necessary facilities. And if he have his way, education will have the highest budget and teachers will be celebrated. "They are the ones moulding the children." He said.

While referencing a teacher, Akeem Badaru, from St Michaels School, Ogun State - for winning the Cambridge best teacher award globally. Obi said, “Many Nigerians did not know. We are busy giving national awards to those who stole the country dry,”

PoliticsIPOB To FG: Release Nnamdi Kanu To Solve Insecurity Issues In South-east by progoh(op): 6:27pm On Jul 14, 2023
The Indigenous People of Biafra have asked the Federal government to release their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to end insecurity in the South-East region.

The group made the statement via its spokesman, Emma Powerful, on Friday, stating that if the Federal Government really wants an end to insecurity in the South-East, it should release its leader unconditionally from detention as pronounced by the courts.

Powerful also condemned the statement by the Nigerian Army that links IPOB to the sit-at-home orders and enforcement in the South-East.

The statement reads in part, “The Army chief, Gen. Lagbaja Taoreed will not claim ignorance of all the previous press releases written by IPOB led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu disassociating ourselves from Simon Ekpa and his criminal sit-at-home enforcers.

“For the avoidance of doubt, IPOB is not responsible for Mondays nor failed seven-day and purported two-week sit-at-home orders and enforcement.

"The reckless and abusive sit-at-home strategy is from the autopilot group led by Simon Ekpa. We have consistently made it known that Simon Ekpa and his autopilot group are not IPOB members and do not represent Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in their violent enforcement of sit-at-home orders.

“Recently, IPOB members rallied in Lahti City in Finland to demonstrate to the world that Simon Ekpa is not an IPOB member which is why he couldn’t come out to identify with the protesters.

“If indeed, the Federal Government and her security agencies are interested in the peace of the South-Eastern region, they should release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally as pronounced by the Appeal Court of Nigeria in Abuja, and see the sponsored criminal agents using Kanu’s detention to perpetrate crime go into oblivion and fade away.

“IPOB has remained peaceful, and when our Directorate of State initiated a sit-at-home that the autopilot has hijacked and abused, we never enforced it. Nevertheless, our people voluntarily complied.

“Therefore, for the Nigeria Army to associate the reckless sit-at-home enforcement to IPOB is to show that the Federal Government is using the promoters of violent enforcement of sit-at-home and criminalities in the South-East to blackmail IPOB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

PoliticsHow Did Tinubu Arrived At 12 Million Poor And Low-income Households’ In Nigeria? by progoh(op): 3:20pm On Jul 14, 2023
The Federation of Informal Workers Organization of Nigeria has asked President Bola Tinubu's administration to explain how it got the number of ‘12 million poor and low-income households in a country with over 130 million people suffering from ‘multi-dimensional poverty’.

In a statement signed by the Secretary General of the group, Mr. Gbenga Komolafe, they requested to know who the 12 million households are and how they were identified, adding that similar programs have failed in the past.

The group further noted that in a similar program, ‘MarketMoni”, some privileged Nigerians had their accounts credited with N10,000 while most women only heard about the program on the radio.

Mr. Gbenga said that development experts and observers have lamented the ‘unprecedented lack of transparency and accountability’ witnessed in fund application, especially concerning the Tradermoni aspect of GEEP.

Furthermore, the statement explains that the programs were overwhelmed by so much politicization, ethnicity, favoritism, and nepotism brought to bear on the generation of data and other vital indicators.

Part of the statement reads;
"The recently announced palliative measure by President Bola Tinubu ostensibly to cushion the effect of petroleum subsidy removal is pathetically too little to make any difference in reliving the overwhelming helplessness that has enveloped Nigeria as poverty holds an increasing number of poor working Nigerians in vicious grip.

PoliticsIPOB Is A Terrorist Group: PUNCH NEWSPAPER by progoh(op): 5:03am On Jul 13, 2023
The Punch Editorial Board has listed the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) among terrorist groups in Nigeria.

In an editorial published on their official website titled "Crush bandits, don’t grant them amnesty," the news media included IPOB in the list of terrorist groups in Nigeria.

Punch made the inclusion while explaining why Nigeria ranks high in the global terrorism index.

Part of the publication reads, "Because of the bandits, killer Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram/ISWAP/Ansaru, and IPOB, the 2023 Global Terrorism Index ranks Nigeria as the eighth most terrorized country in the world. Together, these terrorist groups slaughtered 63,111 Nigerians between 2015 and May 2023, the National Security Tracker estimated."

IPOB is a separatist group agitating for an independent state of Biafra.

The group believes that its region has been marginalized by the Nigerian state - with less to no inclusion in the Nigerian polity, underdevelopment, and continuous exclusion in benefiting what the other regions benefits from the goverment.

In 2017, the Nigerian state proscribed IPOB as a terrorist group - which is been contested in the court. This happened under the leadership of Muhammadu Buhari, the immediate past president of the country.

Nigerian government accused IPOB of being responsible for many atrocities in the easternregion of the country, with their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, still under detention despite a court order asking for his release.

IPOB, on the other hand, accused the government of extrajudicial killings of its people, and has always distanced itself from any crime committed in its most occupied region. However, they are responsible for the sit-at-home exercise affecting the activities in their region - an event that the group started after their leader was arrested in Kenya and sent to Nigeria in 2021.

Punch publication differentiates between terrorists and agitators - using Niger Delta Militants whose fight is about true federalism and resource control as agitators - which did not see IPOB doing the same.

CrimeA Proteser Killed By Imigration Officer In Ogun State by progoh(op): 3:21am On Jul 10, 2023
An officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, identified simply as Lamba, has been accused of shooting a protester, Jacob Bamgbola, to death in the Idigbo community, Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

It was gathered that Bamgbola was conveying his sister’s daughter on a motorcyclist to a destination in the community when some immigration officers manning a checkpoint on the expressway stopped him along the Ijowun end of the Idiroko Expressway and demanded N200 before allowing him to continue his journey.

It was reported that Bamgbola refused to accede to the officers’ request, noting that he did nothing wrong to warrant him being allegedly extorted of N200.

The situation led to an argument and while some of the officers were busy interrogating other motorists, Benjamin took advantage of the fact that much attention was not on him and zoomed off.

On getting to his sister’s place, Bamgbola dropped his niece and proceeded to inform some youths in the community about his encounter with the immigration officers.

A source in the community had told Punch reporter that the youths, some of whom had also experienced similar encounters bordering on alleged extortion by immigration officers on the road, mobilised other youths to the house of a chief in the community, Moses Faleye, to protest about the development.

The source said during the protest, the immigration officers stormed the premises and while trying to disperse the protesters, allegedly shot Bamgbola dead.

He said, “Bamgbola went to carry his sister’s daughter and on his way back, he met immigration officers on the road. Those officers are always there at the checkpoint. They stopped him and wanted to collect N200 from him but he refused.

“He told them that he is a son of Otun village and why should he pay them anything. After he left, he complained to some youths and the youths mobilised themselves to the Baale’s house to register their grievances over the activities of the officers.
