BREAKING: Gunshots rock Abuja market as policemen prevent hoodlums from looting warehouse

Traders at the UTC market, Area 10, Garki, Abuja and residents of the area are currently cowering in fear as security operatives battled hoodlums attempting to loot a warehouse in the vicinity.

Policemen and other security personnel are firing gunshots and tear gas to deter hoodlums who stormed a warehouse with COVID-19 palliatives early this morning.

The warehouse is located in the precinct of the Cyprian Ekwensi building and the UTC market.


A graphics designer, Segun Stickers, said the UTC market and the big shopping plaza in the area had been shut down.

“We are presently locked inside the UTC market. The police are firing gunshots and tear gas to stave off the attack by the hoodlums who were trying to loot the COVID-19 palliatives kept in a warehouse here.

“Many people were injured while trying to escape attack by the hoodlums and the whole area is in turmoil, ” he said on the phone.


Our correspondent could hear gunshots just as a voice was heard ordering the traders to shut down their shops and go home.

Edo All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has won his polling unit at Ward 5, Iguododo community in Orhionwon Local Government Area.

Ize-Iyamu polled 292 votes while Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) got 21 votes.

Ize-Iyamu will win Obaseki. Not talking from a partisan angle but from what I have seen as a journalist deployed to Edo a week ago, Obaseki is a goner. There are so many forces fighting him. He seriously cannot survive the onslaught coming his way.

The Department of State Service has invited ten leaders of the APC for a meeting Saturday in its office in Benin City.

The letter by the secret service dated 20th Augusts 2020 with reference No 171/B/122 addressed to Tony Adun (Aka Kabaka) reads: “I am directed to invite you to an important meeting with the State Director of Security.

“You are to come with the following persons: Osakpamwan Eriyo, National Chairman, RTEAN, Ehis Adams, APC Leader Oredo, Osaro Idahosa, APC Leader, Ikpoba-Okha, Okunbor Roberts, APC Leader, Ovia South West LGA, Atarodo, APC member, Kingsley Amedo, APC member, Richard Obe, APC member, Osarobo Idehen, APC member, Dr Emma, APC member.”

The letter indicated that the meeting would hold by 11 am at the DSS Headquarters, No 1 Court Road, GRA, Benin City.

An aide to one of the invitees when contacted on phone confirmed that his boss received such an invitation letter but refused to speak further on it. “Yes, we received something like that, that is all I can say”.

He said in an interview on BBC Hausa service monitored by journalists on Tuesday that even President Buhari would not dare ask him to be Chief of Staff.

According to him, “it’s ridiculing for some people to mention my name as a possible replacement for Abba Kyari.”

Isa Funtua is Dead

Founding Managing Director of Democrat Newspaper and former President of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua, is dead. He died of cardiac arrest Monday night.


He was life patron of Newspaper’s Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) and Chairman of Bulet Construcion company.

He will be buried according to Islamic rites Tuesday.

PDP Exposes APC’s Plot to Use Ganduje, Uzodinma, Bello to Derail Edo Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has exposed plots by the sinking All Progressives Congress (APC) to use the trio of Governors Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, Hope Uzodinma of Imo state and Yahaya Bello of Kogi State to derail the September 19 Edo State governorship election.

The PDP and indeed the people of Edo state are already aware that the trio were selected by the APC to lead its campaign so as to force a combined formula of Kano and Kogi electoral violence as well as Imo state mandate robbery to subvert the will of the people of Edo state in the governorship election.

The PDP described as pathetic that the APC only has a person who has become a butt of international shame after being seen in a viral video stuffing his robe with gratification, in foreign currency, to serve as Chairman of its Edo state governorship campaign council.

It is equally contemptuous that such a person is being deputized by another individual, who has become a metaphor of electoral manipulation, after being so docketed by a judgment of the Supreme Court.

It is also disgusting that a governor who deployed a Police helicopter to scare voters on election day has been mandated to deploy thugs and dangerous weapons through the northern borderlines of Edo State ahead of the election.

Part of APC’s plot is to import election mercenaries as observers to attempt to scare the people of Edo state, suppress them and steal their mandate.

It is however not surprising that such is the drift of the APC campaign, given that it has neither messages nor plans for the people of Edo state, especially, with a candidate like Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who has also been declared by his former APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, as a person of questionable character, a fake pastor, treasury looter, rusticated student who is only fit for “night meetings” and should never be entrusted with the office of the governor of Edo state.

Whereas our candidate, Governor Godwin Obaseki, enjoys the overwhelming support of the Edo people due to his enthusing track record of personal character and performance in office for which even APC leaders have praises for him, the APC candidate has nothing to present to the people.

With its defective nomination process, an ailing campaign council and a dented governorship candidate, it is clear that the APC is not preparing for issue-based and people oriented campaign, but for process manipulation and ballot robbery.

Our party, in the strongest terms, cautions the APC to note that the “Gandollar,” “Supreme Court Governor” and "helicopter shooting" formulas cannot work in this election as the people of Edo state have never been intimidated, suppressed, subjugated or overpowered by external political influences.

The APC should also note that the people of Edo state will spare nothing within the law in firmly resisting any attempt by anybody to import violence or try to manipulate the Edo election in any way.

With the people of Edo state on the side of Governor Obaseki and the PDP, the coast is already clear and any attempt by anybody to subvert the will of the people will surely be met very stiff resistance.
