I have largely avoided this thread. Anyone who believes Abacha was not corrupt must be the greatest Nigerian fool alive. Here's a quick peek into what could have transpired under his regime. Take crude oil sales. He was the sole agent on d buyer and seller side in addition to unilaterally giving commissions on crude sales and then the singular personality that determined what was imported as refined products. Just take the current subsidy debacle and picture 1 man in the centre of everything instead of the myriads of marketers. In just that sector you will understand why the Abacha family will say no matter how poor they get they can never be as poor as Dangote. The family is said to own huge chain of businesses wrongly ascribed to the Lebanese and Chinese concerns. Only insiders can verify such claims. So it all depends on what corruption is. Those generals who assigned juicy oil blocks of the Niger Delta to themselves are equally corrupt. OBJ who made himself Minister of Petroleum for 8 years is also corrupt. The major reason for GEJ being referred to as corrupt, not that he is a saint, is the transparency he introduced. Things are most likely to be reported under GEJ than under OBJ. It is funny some ppl re saying GEJ is the most corrupt Nigerian leadeR. Imagine the dude is yet to even complete his house in Abuja. Well we know certain ppl have to be given a bad name so as to justify the need for a regional shift in power.

Bauchi state is approximately about 1³/₄ the landmass of the whole South-East region by my data. The population of the state can't be categorically doubted to be lower than the NBS and NPC's statistics if density is your yardstick.

Let's just we re having intellectual discuss as neither of us have a factual verifiable fact as regards the population census in Nigeria. Am not sure landmass alone is a yardstick for the determining the population of a region. This has always been the logic for attributing higher census figures to the North. Which I blv is unfair. Who has ever heard of a populous desert or semi arid Region? Beats commonla accepted demographics of more population in the tropical region. Oh well, we work with what we have for now.

Bauchi could as well said it is a gateway to the North from Niger Republic and probably Chad. likewise all other states would give very convincing reasons to be more represented leading to the complication of political issues and allocations of seats.

Democratic process deals with accurate facts, figures and values of living homo sapiens for a reliable statistics. Rhode island with the smallest landmass has a higher representation in the congress than Alaska with the largest landmass.

The Democratic House of Representatives is the representation of People for reasons and not the representation of reasons for the People. Hence, the proportions values which is a function dependent on the populations and not reasons.

It's this fact that we don't have ooo. I still believe in free and fair census, Bauchi cannot be more.

The converse is equally true, what do you have to suggest it isn't? By the way, Ogun is a gateway state meaning some of the excess luggage from Lagos reside there. Delta is equally a gateway to the East meaning chances are a lot of ppl tend to live there not to mention the oil activities. And as for Enugu, it is technically the centre or should I say the capital of the Igbo nation. That said, onky a real census can justify my conjectures. I still don't see how it is possible that Bauchi gets to have more reps than any of the aforementioned states. Once again this is entirely my view.

The US federating units controlling the individual resources has no relevance here but the proportional representation in the lower chamber of the congress.

The House of Representatives in the US where our constitution is adopted is made up of members base on the population of the states.

so far the Ndigbo is the third largest ethnic group in Nigeria doesn't mean they should be treated differently from other ethnic groups.

On the issue of population of ethnic nationalities, aside the NW, SE, SW every other region is fragmented. You cannot categorically say a particular ethnic group controls the NC neither can you say the same for the NE and SS. So you are left with proper census of each state to ascertain their representations in the House of Representatives. Since such credible numbers may never be realised, I believe we will have to deal with having Bauchi send more reps than Ogun, Delta, and even Enugu.

Has anyone ever wondered why the APC love sending advance Parties? They love to dominate the media. They dominate ppl's minds. That they way they don't leave the consciousness of every Nigerian. With things like see Buhari eating, see him smiling, see him laughing really hard is all to soften the mind for waht to come. And this is where discerning minds have to sit up. The PDP gangs have to contend for that same space. Their greatest undoing was to allow them head start in 2011. The same mistake is being made again. This is why some of us clamour for Shadow ministers. Give a speech for every APC speech, contend for the same media space. Let it then be that ppl chose out of freewill not out of inception. For anyone who has seen the movie inception you will understand my point. While this is a welcome development from the days of PDP physical power approach at keeping power, this is a far more sinister way of controlling ppl. Simply because u dominate their minds. 2 can play the game... one of the effect of this approach is that when they blunder, they have enough goodwill credit in the minds of ppl that they won't suffer for it.
I may be an alarmist or whatever adjective that comes to your minds, I have seen this happen all too often that I am willing to stick my head out for this analysis.

I personally know what the ethnic nationalities in delta state face in order to have a voice. the outcome of the last election has shown that there is an existential threat. My personal take in all of this is that the SW is up for the best negotiator they court anyone that meets their needs. The elections also revealed to me the North is back as 1. The 19 states are now United in their voice. The rest of Nigeria, and I must say the SE in particular with connivance of the SS blew the chance to draw them closer after Obasanjo succeeded in bring in the 6 geopolitical concept to confuse them. The NC can always be courted but that requires huge efforts especially if the incoming govt gets gets their acts right.

Nigeria is one big strategic ball with silent wars fought across the regionS. Even the SS have to battle it out when u consider the no love lost relationship between isokos, ijaws, efik, benins, urhobos, kwales, itsekiris, it is is a massive piece of work to unite the SS. Until this is seen as an existential threat no meaningful progress would be made.

Need I state at this point that these regions must fight for relevance and not the pitiful approach that GEJ the top job. Careful planning must be done. Similar to Asiwaju's 16 year plan to get the presidency. It must calculate and strategic. No one should expect father Christmas all the time

I love this thread and as one who believes in the unity of Nigeria there's need for the regions to be evenly matched. Your quote on being strategic and avoiding violence is so so apt. The SS and SE are a united block that must look to draw closer. The biggest worries of the SSner is the dominance of the SEners. Unless people find a way to take that threat away the dream unification will not work. In the face if the current realities, the unity becomes expedient. And i for one believes the region has all it takes to thrive without the usual FG intervention. From Edo to Delta, through the Igbo states up to Calabar, one voice Would better position them in the Nigerian state. This bloc "old easterners" stands a better chance in counter balancing d North. Personally, the SW remain swing voters. They follow only those that dance to their tune. From my view of the country, the north and the East are the 2 inflexible regions in Nigeria. That said, we must all remain one indivisible nation under God.

The last time the Chadian army accused our army of cowardice, Chris Olukolade came out accusing them of being thieves. Now that no less a person than the president of Chad has come out to reiterate those criticisms, I am really looking forward to Olukolade's response to this.

Nigeria will not stoop low to the level of chad. we will not dignify them with a response. Right now we re in a union of convenience of some sort, the 2 nations have never been the best of friends so you should understand. The level of hatred for our president is unprecedented. We forget that he is the symbol of our nation. Rubbishing him is at our own peril. The world doesn't recognise his lapses as a man's inefficiency they see as a nation's inefficiency. I have never seen a man so hated from d day he mounted the saddle. For me the strides he has made have been phenomenal to say d least. By the way, negotiating with BH at the time that news came put was not a wrong move to take. If everyone had been on d same page we would have made progress. Was it not around then that news broke of Camerron paying thousands of dollars to secure the release of some chinese hostage alongside the wife of their vice president? News also filtered that they got some arms in that exchange. People seem to conveniently forget most of BH foots soldiers were forcefully conscripted and brain washed. Every able bodied man was forced to join them, refusal earned such persons one way pass to the great beyond. Most of this lads had never held a gun in their lives till the terrorists showed. Will you call killing some of those child soldiers whom they once called cubs a fair Kill? So killing them is essentially decimating a people who got involved in a struggle that they had no hand in starting. remember the mantra of this administration up till now had been carrot and stick. With 17,620,436 registered voters and an overall collection rate of 90.80%, has a total of 15,999,398 cards collected

With 10,059,347 registered voters and an overall collection rate of 83.69%, has a total of 8,418,474 cards collected

In summary:

1. The NW + NE (23,921,842) is marginally less than all of the South (24,278,728)
2. The NW (15,999,398) region alone has more collected cards (eligible voters) than the SW+SE (15,860,254), SS+SE (15,040,015)
3. The SW (9,238,713) though most vocal in terms of electioneering campaign now doubt because of the Jagagban politics is only marginally better the SS (8,418,474) no thanks to a higher collection rate in the SS compared to the SW.
4. The Northerners have once again shown the rest of the country that they are more politically aware with the NW having the highest PVC collection at approximately 90% with NE coming second with 86%
5. If the South wants to have more say in the direction of the country they will need to start taking politics by action more serious instead of their usual talk talk politics.

Implications:

If PVC collection rate is anything to go by in this election year, the North will account for more than 50% of the total vote cast. Here's my projection. Between 50-60% of those that collected their PVCs are expected to file out in the North. This amounts to approximately 17,370,880
votes (took an average of 55% turn out). While in the South, in the characteristic usual way, a sub 50% rate, conservatively put at 40%. This amounts to 9,711,491.
Kindly note that the above figures are only projections based on the writer's point of view. The winner of this election is definitely going to be one who gathers enough votes in the North (NW to be specific) with appropriate consolidation in the Southern States... In the worst case, I foresee a situation where the one with the most votes cast falling short of the 25% in 24 states. I sure hope this doesn't happen because a run off election is definitely not one we want to see.
