Literature / Artistically Talking With Ola Rotimi's Holding Talks by PTVNEWS: 8:16am On Mar 24
By Sunday Edum

Preamble

Live theatre serves as a reflective mirror of society, capturing its complexities, disparities, and struggles on stage. In Nigeria, a nation grappling with profound inequality, high unemployment, and widespread poverty, artistic expression emerges as a voice for the marginalized and a platform for critical dialogue. Ola Rotimi's seminal work, "Holding Talks," performed at the esteemed University of Port Harcourt's Arts Theatre (The Crab), embodies this fusion of artistry and social commentary.

The politically charged atmosphere of Nigeria, marked by deep-seated disparities and systemic injustices, provides fertile ground for artistic exploration and introspection. The diverse audience, comprising political figures, business leaders, students, and academics, eagerly gathered at The Crab to witness the artistic spectacle orchestrated by the visionary cast and crew under the astute direction of Kelvin Melvin.

In Rotimi's evocative narrative, unfolding within the confines of a humble barbershop, the struggles of society manifest through the vulnerable and impoverished barber. The entrance of the privileged man catalyzes a succession of tragic events stemming from a fatal bet on the barber's trembling hand, symbolizing hunger. As the barber succumbs to starvation and neglect, the man's diversion to petty arguments with the apprentice epitomizes societal apathy towards pressing issues. The futile interventions of journalists and the police further underscore systemic failures and societal indifference, unveiling layers of corruption, poverty, and leadership shortcomings entrenched in Nigerian society.

Holding Talks in Performance:

The directorial finesse of Melvin Kelvin in staging Ola Rotimi's Holding Talks is a testament to the electrifying contributions that shaped the artistic landscape of the production. Kelvin's meticulous use of space and movement demonstrated the expertise of a skilled director, enriching the visual narrative and the overall impact of the play. The thoughtful choreography of actors within the space created dynamic and visually compelling scenes that captivated the audience, breathing life into Rotimi's narrative.

Kelvin's adept control over picturization and composition added depth and richness to the storytelling, offering an immersive experience for spectators. The atmospheric lighting design further accentuated the mood and tone of the production, setting the stage for the exploration of corruption, poverty, and societal indifference. The incorporation of a chorus, using appropriate and inappropriate songs to set the mood, elevated the entertainment value of the play and engaged the audience on an emotional level. The chorus not only enriched the narrative but also heightened the entertainment aspect, delivering a unique and immersive experience for the audience.

The portrayal of characters in Ola Rotimi's performance was a masterclass in immersive and believable acting, breathing life into the poignant narrative of corruption, poverty, and societal indifference. Joseph Alaibe's portrayal of Man, the philosophical character, was nothing short of captivating. His embodiment of philosophical depth and nuances was a testament to his mastery of the craft. Alaibe's adept use of voice modulation, body language, and utilization of the performance space showcased a profound connection with the essence of theatre, engaging both co-actors and the audience seamlessly. His comic delivery and profound understanding of philosophy added layers to the character, resonating with Constantine Stanislavsky's Method acting principles. Similarly, Akoko Ezekiel Digha's portrayal of the character of Apprentice exhibited a mechanical and exploitative demeanour, adding complexity to the character's interpretation. Although his portrayal was forceful and engaging, it was almost overshadowed by the commanding stage presence of Joseph Nnana Alaibe, highlighting the dynamics between the characters. Digha's psychic aura, complexion, and physicality added depth to the character, creating a palpable contrast within the ensemble. Abraham Nnamdi Chika's dramatization of Barber brought forth a fitting representation of the role, embodying vulnerability and societal struggles effectively. His makeup and costume choices enhanced the character's contrast with Man, the capitalist figure, underscoring the socio-economic themes of the play. However, Chika failed to maintain breath control from when he collapsed to the production's conclusion, which is a call for improvement in his dedication to the performance.

The dynamic performances of Joseph Alaibe, Akoko Ezekiel Digha, Abraham Nnamdi Chika, Jaja Godspower as photographer, Njoku Favour as policewoman, Njoku Christine Nmesoma Nkechinyereugo, and Chukwusa Ruth Onari, as reporters in Melvin Kelvin’s interpretation of Rotimi’s 'Holding Talks', exemplified a synergy of talent, dedication, and artistic vision, bringing to life the complexities of Rotimi's narrative. Their adept portrayal of characters, commitment to their roles, and ability to evoke profound emotions within the audience underscored the power of live theatre in provoking thought, sparking dialogue, and resonating with the human experience.
Conclusion

The synergy of talent, dedication, and artistic vision displayed by the cast in Melvin Kelvin's interpretation of Rotimi's Holding Talks transcended the boundaries of mere entertainment, offering a profound social critique that spurred introspection and dialogue. The rich tapestry of storytelling, augmented by nuanced character portrayals and seamless interactions, immersed the audience in a world of social commentary and reflection, underscoring the transformative power of live theatre in provoking thought and inciting change within society. As the actors breathed life into Rotimi's timeless narrative, they left an indelible impact on the audience, fostering a collective call for societal empathy, justice, and progress in the face of adversity.

Literature / Theatrical Brilliance In Port Harcourt: Unpacking 'pitakwa Boiz” by PTVNEWS: 4:47pm On Mar 19
By Ovunda Ihunwo

Experiencing live theatre is a transformative journey that transcends mere entertainment. As a seasoned theatre practitioner, I often find solace in relinquishing the directorial reins and immersing myself in the sheer magic of a play as an audience member. Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State in Nigeria, stands as a shining example of the unwavering spirit of creativity amongst its "Theatrepreneurs," despite the daunting challenges posed by the lack of governmental, individual, and corporate support. This sets it apart from its Lagosian counterparts, who are known for having more support and infrastructure.

Nestled amidst this thriving cultural landscape, Rivers State boasts a plethora of theatrical and cinematic talents, although the lack of infrastructure hinders its growth. Even the esteemed University of Port Harcourt, renowned for nurturing globally celebrated icons in theatre and film, lacks a modern theatrical facility. However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. The 9th Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, has secured a Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) project to construct a new theatre building. This project is expected to significantly impact the theatre scene in the city and the state as a whole.

Despite anticipating this impending transformation, we still seek refuge in the dilapidated confines of the Arts Theatre Building (CRAB), which serves as a temporary home for many theatre productions in Port Harcourt. The CRAB is in dire need of renovation, but it is still the only viable option for many theatre practitioners in the city. Nonetheless, the resilience and creativity of the theatre community in Port Harcourt continue to shine through, and we remain hopeful for the future of live theatre in the city.

According to a famous saying, 'While the pot of beans is still cooking, men will still eat.' Therefore, for now, we have to manage the dilapidated state of CRAB. Recently, I had the privilege of attending an outstanding theatrical extravaganza, 'Pitakwa Boiz,' which was presented from March 5th to March 7th, 2024. I was fortunate enough to witness the final performance, and based on the feedback I received, the energy was just as high as it was on the opening nights. Godspower Jaja, a talented graduate and postgraduate student of the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, wrote the play. Jaja's narrative masterfully weaves a tapestry of ambition, power struggles, and brotherhood, with 'Downbase' as an evocative metaphor for societal macrocosms. Through the lens of satire, the play takes a piercing look at Nigeria's political landscape, exposing the nefarious grip of electoral malpractice and the pervasive spectre of bad governance.

The play's linguistic cadence is rooted in the rich tapestry of Port Harcourt pidgin, which resonates with an authenticity that captures the essence of the city's spirit. However, beneath the veneer of comedic banter lies a poignant commentary on societal responsibility, encapsulated in Ibiso's impassioned plea to confront adversity rather than succumb to the allure of foreign shores, popularly referred to as "Jakpa." The play's production was skillfully executed, with a creative set design, impressive lighting, and sound effects that transported the audience to the heart of the action. The exceptional actors delivered their lines with precision and emotion, bringing the characters to life and making them relatable to the audience.

"Pitakwa Boiz" is a theatrical production that goes beyond mere entertainment. It encompasses all the aspects of theatre, such as well-defined blocking and movement, beautifully choreographed dances, profound character interpretations, and a harmonious orchestra. This accurately captures the essence of Richard Wagner's theory of artistic synthesis, also known as Gesamtkunstwerk. The concept aimed to unite all the arts into a single, immersive whole. Wagner popularized this term in his ground-breaking essay "The Artwork of the Future" (1849), where he argued for a "consummate artwork of the future" that would integrate all the arts, including music, drama, poetry, and theatrical arts. I must commend the director, Sampson Kelvin Melvin, who has continually proven to be a creative and imaginative choreographer and director. Kelvin's dedication to the arts has opened his horizons to great exploits. I have worked with him on many projects in and out of the country, and it is a joy to see that he has learned much about the craft through humility and determination.

The indomitable talents of Precious Okuro, Clarkson Okah, Donatus Akande, Antoinette Obichukwu, Chiamaka Njoku, Deborah Okeukwu, Blessing Anyika, Martha Okafor, Esther Onyekwelu, and Sophia Obisike, just to mention a few, deliver a tour de force performance that is nothing short of spectacular. Their nuanced and dynamic acting, intricate choreography, and soulful music create an unforgettable experience that leaves the audience spellbound.

As the final curtain falls, one cannot help but feel a renewed sense of optimism for the future of theatre in Port Harcourt. The play showcases the actors’ incredible talent and highlights the transcendent power of storytelling to bridge divides and kindle the flames of cultural exchange.
In the company of colleagues and luminaries such as Walter Anga, a stalwart of Nollywood and a former student of the department, one is reminded of the importance of preserving and promoting cultural heritage through the arts. "Pitakwa Boiz" is not just a play; it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring legacy of artistic expression.

In conclusion, I implore fellow enthusiasts to rally behind the burgeoning theatrical renaissance in Port Harcourt. Let us ensure that the vibrant tapestry of our cultural heritage continues to flourish and captivate audiences both near and far. The success of "Pitakwa Boiz" is a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of the artists involved, and it is a harbinger of great things to come in the world of theatre.

Culture / NCAC DG, Obi Asika, Visits Lagos Zonal Office by PTVNEWS: 5:21pm On Mar 11
By Perekeme Odon

Chief Obi Asika, the Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), paid a visit to the NCAC Zonal Directorate, Lagos, on March 4, 2024, as part of his endeavour to rebrand the NCAC brand. Mr. Francis Oshomegie, the Director and Head of the Lagos Zonal Directorate, and the delighted personnel of the Lagos Zonal Directorate warmly received him.

During his briefing, the Director General appreciated the staff of the Lagos Zonal Directorate for their patience since his appointment on Friday, January 12, 2024, and stated that his visit was part of his facilities tour since being appointed by the president. He used the special day to communicate to the staff his aim to improve the quality of the council's content and activities, as well as to promote employee well-being.

Chief Asika urged the Lagos Zonal Directorate staff to be steadfast and committed to the National Council for Arts and Culture's mandate, describing the agency as Nigeria's "crude oil." “I can feel the NCAC has been almost disconnected from the setup. I can imagine there are a lot of challenges. Your work environment is very important to enable you to deliver on your mandate. I can’t expect anybody to deliver at a world-class level if they’re not given the tools and opportunities to do so.” He stated.

The convener of the just concluded inaugural Omniverse summit requested that his staff see him more as their representative, as he will do his best to tell them the truth and cannot guarantee things he does not have, but he did assure them that any issue they are concerned about would be heard at the appropriate level.

He challenged them to take advantage of the position of Lagos as the epicentre of Nigeria and Africa and the mandate and authority given to them to be part of the unlimited Nigerian IP and soft power value chain. He also stated that there are too many major life events taking place in Lagos to keep the staff busy with great content to depict the country favourably and attract foreign direct investment, and they have to look good and on point.

“For you at the Lagos Zonal Directorate, I want to urge you. Please don’t be laid back. Be proactive. Let me tell you what you have. You have the mandate and the authority to push and promote arts, crafts, and culture to create some inspiration and direction by providing leadership into the Nigerian soft power and IP value chain which NCAC is not part of."

After a one-on-one discussion with the staff, the DG assured the Lagos Zonal Directorate staff of his commitment to touching people, space, and staff welfare, given the challenges hampering their operations. “I mean the entire value chain in terms of welfare, even your office environment and working conditions. We have to understand that we are on the same team, working together. We will touch people and space, not just be seen and heard in the media spaces. For me to be successful, you have to be successful. If I leave here after my stay and there is no real change, then it means to me that I failed. We have to change the situation, but to do that; I need all of your support and help, which means I need you to be informed about your issues and your challenges. I’m not here to chase any person or any history lessons." He assured.

He identified training, and retraining as critical, and a priority in advancing staff’s professional know-how. “You need to get the requisite training. You need to network and understand the global best practices for how this job is done because there are new technologies and opportunities every day.”

He pledged to run an inclusive and open-door administration that would espouse the regulatory and mandatory oversight functions of the Council so we can win together and also expand partnerships with the local and international private sectors to elevate the Council to where it ought to be. "We will bring the private and public sectors closer together and build partnerships, as we may not find all the results we need from governance, but from the private sector and donor organizations who are interested in these works."

The Director and Head of the Lagos Zonal Directorate, Mr Francis Oshomegie, took the DG on a tour of different sections of the Lagos Directorate, where he met with the various private cultural and artistic groups and troupes on their rehearsal grounds. He acknowledged the challenges noticed and promised to come to their aid. He promised to visit all the zonal offices within the next two months.

TV/Movies / Message From The DGN President On Independence Day. by PTVNEWS: 5:51pm On Oct 01, 2023
Dear Nigerians, today is a big day in our country—it is the celebration of our independence. Accept my sincere congratulations.

The Directors' Guild of Nigeria (DGN) congratulates the good people of Nigeria on the celebration of the 63rd anniversary of independence. We wish the country and her citizens present happiness and future prosperity.

At this juncture, it is critical for us to reflect on the state of the country’s creative and economic situation, and it is incumbent on us to find solutions to our own problems that are at once practical and responsive to our peculiar situation. We in the Guild are not in doubt that, with cooperation on all sides, it should not be difficult for us to achieve our dreams as a nation.

It is important to reiterate that until we institute a culture of respect for our democratic system of electing our leaders, to paraphrase the words of Emperor Haile Selassie I, "the desire for sustainable development and prosperity will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained”.

As we celebrate this Independence Day, let us not forget the sacrifices made by our founding fathers and the heroes who fought for our freedom. Their bravery and determination have paved the way for us to enjoy the privileges we have today. We must honour their memory by working towards a Nigeria that thrives on unity, justice, and progress.

Today, I call on the creative industry and all Nigerians to join hands in building a society where every citizen has equal opportunities, access to quality education, healthcare, and a thriving economy. Let us champion peace, unity, and tolerance, embracing our diversity as a source of strength.

In conclusion, let us not lose sight of the fact that our collective future lies in our hands. Together, we can build a prosperous creative industry in Nollywood and Nigeria that generations will be proud of.

May peace and prosperity return to our country so we can all celebrate her greatness again. May God bless the creative industry, may God bless Nigeria, and may God bless us all.

Thank you, and happy Independence celebrations!

TV/Movies / Tribe Nation Pledges More Support For DGN by PTVNEWS: 12:02am On Aug 12, 2023
By Perekeme Odon

Tribe Nation Theatrical Distribution (TNTD) paid a courtesy visit to the newly sworn-in executives of the Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN) on the 28th of July 2023, to discuss the way forward in ensuring effective and efficient collaboration that will benefit both parties.

Tribe Nation Theatrical Distribution (TNTD) is a mainstream entertainment company focused on the distribution and marketing of local and international filmed content, with a distribution network that spans cinema, inflight entertainment, streaming platforms, and linear television networks within and outside Africa.

While welcoming the TNTD members to DGN, the President, reiterated the need for synergy between TNTD & the guild to achieve common goals. In his word, “We met, we spoke and what I heard was too good for my ear, but it’s not about what I hear but for what will benefit the guild. We need to improve our symbiotic relationship to achieve a common goal and make everyone responsible and add value to the creative industry,”

In her address, the TNTD Founder and CEO, Anita Oritsegbubemi Edwards delivered a descriptive narrative on film distribution, theatrical distribution, film production, film marketing, film licensing, production values, partnership with the guild and primed audience on how they can collaborate with DGN by taking away the burden from the producer and the director.

The TNTD CEO indicated that Tribe Nation assists producers to review their scripts as not every story is fit for the theatre or streaming, helps out with their casting and ensures they produce something fit for the market. TNTD consult for free and does not charge a dime for talking to producers. As distributors, they look at the money a filmmaker spends and do not see any existing structure that can furnish you with your return.

“We are very humbled to be here to share our vision for our theatrical distribution plans. Our goal primarily is to create value as we have the production background. Nigerian films are not cheap and I can tell you from data. We have a movie coming out in the theatre from a September shot with roughly about N60m. You have people willing to invest, but how do they guarantee their return on investment? We have seen producers and directors in good faith go out to make films that were not made for the market. Part of our partnership with DGN is training sessions and it’s going to be absolutely free. We’re going to give you the latest information and it’s going to be a unique opportunity that DGN members would have access to.”

She further stated that “If you do distribution well, if your producer fails, you fail. We can't pay salaries if you take a movie to a theatre that doesn’t sell. That’s not something we are interested in doing.

“As your distributor, it’s very demoralizing to tell your client you can’t make your money back. Most clients have failed due to bad financial decisions. So for that dream to be feasible, we need to be part of the creation of it.” She stated.

The Head, Co-Production & Special Events Tribe Nation Theatrical Distribution Tribe Nation Theatrical Distribution, Lillian Amah-Aluko appreciated the President of DGN for receiving the team and reiterated the guild’s partnership with TNTD to advance the creative works of members of the guild in the Nigerian movie industry. She appealed for a better synergy between the two organizations, particularly in the training and distribution of members’ films through their platforms. She also advised filmmakers on having a business plan and to always vet their scripts no matter how passionate they are about the stories.

“A robust relationship between TNTD and DGN will go a long way to enhance access to creativity. We understand filmmakers’ passion for their stories, but at Tribe Nation, we always discuss and critique every script, rework it and fix the challenges before they hit location. A lot of clients are now becoming comfortable and interested in the idea due to the process and stages in fixing their scripts, coupled with making them a business plan to outline and know how much profit they can get on their return on investment in the future.”

She thanked the DGN for their creative prowess and advised filmmakers never to relent but to keep making films, even if they hit and miss. “We can continue the way we’re going. Keep making films, hit and miss. I’ve made my share of mistakes. It’s not because your story is not a good story, or you didn’t film it well. But different platforms are looking for different elements. If we want a difference in production, we need to sit down and do things differently. DGN is the primary guild for creativity and the home of the greatest directors this country has. There is a lot of creative energy in the room that is why we are here for partnership with the guild.” She declared.

In her closing remark, Anita Edward appealed to filmmakers to embrace knowledge and always be cautious and real before embarking on any project. She also advised the guild to look into the academic creative spaces to sieve out young talent who are eager to go into filmmaking. “A lot of creative despise knowledge. They love to dream, but they don’t want to know. Assumptions are dangerous when you’re dealing with people’s money. We deal with a highly capitalistic market where creativity ends on set, and after that, everyone is in the jungle. The guilds must rise to the occasion to influence laws enacted that would protect the interest of the guild members. If you think like a victim, you will always be a victim.”

TV/Movies / Nigerian Movie Directors Elect DGN New National Officers by PTVNEWS: 10:31am On Jul 19, 2023
The heartbeat of Nigeria, Benin City, Edo State, was agog for three days as film directors converged on the serene but culturally vibrant capital's penultimate week for the 2023 National Convention under the umbrella of the Directors' Guild of Nigeria (DGN), with the theme "Charting New African Narratives," from July 13–15, 2023, at the Victor Uwaifor Creative Hub.

A four-in-one National convention—election of a new national executive, induction of new members, ratification of a new constitution, and the DGN annual conference/launching of the first ever DGN Academy Journal by the DGN Academy Conference Team, led by Prof. Emmanuel Emasealu—which brought together filmmakers and practitioners, arts and culture administrators, culture enthusiasts, and thespians from across the country and beyond.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the convention, the DGN President, Dr. Victor Okhai, showed great appreciation to the Governor, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, for his immense contributions to the creative industry and talent development, the Edo State Government through Edo Jobs, and the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub for hosting the august event. He also commended the Vice Chancellor and staff of Gabriel Igbinedion University, Okada, for the partnership.

The DGN conference, anchored by Dr. Ovunda Ihunwo, with Chief Andy Boyo, Mr. Paul Obazele, Prof. Sunday Ogunbiyi, and Mazi Ugezu J. Ugezu as speakers, saw the launch of the first-ever volume of the DGN academic journal titled "Nollywood Practise," which documents the history of one of the world’s fastest-growing movie industries with an annual output of approximately 1,800 films. The journal, produced in partnership with Igbinedion University Okada, was presented to members of DGN at the guild’s annual national convention held at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City, Edo State.

The DGN President, in his opening remark, described the excitement with which papers for the journal were sent as unprecedented. He stressed the importance of documenting the history of the film industry in Nigeria and ensuring that "we tell our story", saying the journal was a means to achieve that pertinent goal.

Speaking at the ceremony, The DGN President emphasised the significance of documenting the history of the Nigerian film industry and making sure that "We tell our story", stating that the journal served as a tool to accomplish that important objective. Mungo Park was said to have discovered the River Niger, but our ancestors were already here before he came. That mistake will not repeat itself in our lifetime. We must tell our story, and the Directors' Guild of Nigeria must do the same," Okhai said.

An evening reception with His Excellency, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, Esama of Benin Kingdom, saw a breathtaking feasting and carnival-like gathering with all the trappings of a cultural festival, from drum ensembles to cultural dance performances, and various gifts were given to members at the event.

The Esama was named patron of the guild and thanked them for the honour, stating that it is a source of encouragement for him to make arts and culture an intrinsic component of all activities in his domain.

An excursion was also taken to Osaretin Festus Isibor's Deep End Villa and Event Centre at Obagie Rd., off Benin Sapele Road, Benin City, and Deepend Hotels and Suites, opposite NTA, one of the leading hotels in Edo State situated in the heart of Benin City, as well as a tour of his multi-billion naira state-of-the-art 20th-century film studio and the horror hunted house.

The 2023 conference concluded with the election, which saw Dr. Victor Okhai return unopposed with 65 votes to lead the guild for the next two years.

Uchenna Agbo, who ran unopposed, was elected Vice President with 64 votes.

Mr. Perekeme Odon was elected National Secretary with 65 votes.

Mazi Okoli, who received 65 votes, was declared the winner of the Treasurership contest.

Jeremiah Onoge was declared the winner after running unopposed for the position of Public Relations Officer for the guild.

Daniel Chukwueze and John Paul Nwanganga were elected as the new provost and Director of Social/Welfare respectively, and Gold Dappa was elected as the new Financial Secretary. Comrade Ofia Mbaka defeated Ms Libby Offem-Oke to win the position of Assistant National Secretary.

President Okhai stated in his address that there was no victor and no vanquished, and he urged all of his colleagues to assist him in taking the guild to a higher level.

Prominent actors and groups within Nollywood have thrown their support behind the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Hon. Desmond Olusola Elliott, who is contesting to represent Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly elections, scheduled for Saturday, March 11, 2023.

In a statement, the Nollywood Mandate Group and Code Door2Door Initiative commended Elliott for his leadership skills, commitment to social justice, empowerment of actors, selfless service, and community development.

"We are proud to endorse Desmond Elliott to continue the good work he is doing representing Surulere Constituency 1". Francis Onwochei, a veteran Nollywood actor, stated. "He is a talented, selfless, and dedicated leader who has demonstrated his commitment not just to our industry but to his community time and time again. He is an outstanding public servant, and we are confident that he will continue to push for improved quality of life for residents in Surulere constituency 1."

Moji Oyetayo (Mama Ajasco), Coordinator of the Code Door2Door Initiative, also affirmed that Elliott's candidature is a testament to the growing influence of the Nigerian film industry on the political stage. "Desmond Elliott is a role model for many actors, producers, and directors. He has represented us well and carried everyone along. He has also shown that with talent, hard work, and dedication, you can achieve great things both in and out of the film industry. We are thus excited to see him take his leadership skills to the next level and make a positive impact on the lives of Nigerians. It is a unanimous decision among actors, especially those in Surulere Constituency 1, that he should continue the good work he is doing."

Francis Onwochei, Coordinator of the Nollywood Mandate Group, opined that Desmond is always eager and willing to drive entrepreneurship in the constituency and, aside from providing training opportunities, has empowered over 1500 Surulere residents to register their businesses free with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), facilitated free medical health insurance coverage for about 1000 residents, and ensured the provision of 300kVA and 500kVA new transformers to various communities in Surulere.

Onwochei noted that education is paramount to him, as scores of secondary schools in his constituency have been trained and equipped with digital technology skills. "Desmond appreciates the power of education to transform lives and is always present and willing to lecture both registered and unregistered members on free-acting training organised by the industry’s guilds and associations. He also rebuilt the Itolo girls' school at Itolo off Eric Moore Road, in addition to his involvement in other school activities around the constituency.

TV/Movies / Sparkling Rose Production Hits Location With Slap Of Destiny by PTVNEWS: 3:00am On Dec 10, 2022
(Lagos, Nigeria) – After a lengthy wait, Nollywood filmmaker and actress Ukeaja Chioma Rose's Sparkling Rose Production has finally arrived on location for the filming of "Slap of Destiny," a compelling family drama about destiny at work in the life of an orphan girl. The film is already receiving excellent reviews from critics, and this is the production house's first time filming in Ajah, Lagos State, Nigeria.

"Slap of Destiny," an intense and high-voltage drama, leads us to the fairly classic love story of a young orphan girl, Peace (Rose Ukeaja), who has lived with various families and works as a maid in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oluchi Kalu, but is always maltreated by Mrs. Kalu, who has an amorous soft spot for her male servant, Obi (Nosa Rex), owing her childlessness to Mr. Kalu.

The producer and CEO of Sparkling Rose Production, Ukeaja Chioma Rose, believes in spreading love, even to lonely orphaned kids. She is the leading actor and has not shied away from playing the orphan girl who works in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kalu (Tony Umez and Mercy Aigbe).
During a visit to Kalu's home by his boss, Alhaji Altharu, an event occurs in their kitchen that leads to his wife, Oluchi (Mercy Aigbe), assaulting Peace. He finds out she is an orphan and decides to take her into his home to help him since his wife has died.

Alhaji Altharu requests that Mr. and Mrs. Kalu allow Peace to live with him so she can help him care for his home. Mrs. Kalu was overjoyed because she would be living alone with Obi, who is also interested in peace. He married Peace and sent her to the States to study. After a few years, she returns and takes over management of his company, eventually becoming Kalu's employer.

Peace's ex-boyfriend, Fred Aminu (Tolu), seeks to reclaim her love, but Obi (Rex Nosa), who desperately needs a job, goes to visit Peace in her home following Alhaji's death to distract himself from his frustration. He proposes to Peace after falling in love with her. They get married and live happily ever after.

The new film stars Rose Chioma Ukeaja (Peace), Nosa Rex (Obi), Felix Ugo Omohkodion (Dave), Tony Umez (Kalu), Mercy Aigbe (Mrs. Oluchi Kalu), Ejike Asiegbu (Alhaji Attahiru), Florence Sunday (Mrs. Rakiya Attahiru), and other well-known actors and actresses to pull it through.
"We are absolutely thrilled that Rose Ukeaja and her team chose Unity Estate, Ajah, for her new movie," said an estate resident. According to the film's director, Perekeme Odon, "The truth is that God seems pretty concerned about orphans across generations and cultures. Family Story brings people together, and with its unparalleled diversity of cast and raw talent, it is an ideal film to watch any day. A happily ever after story does the viewers a favour: It confirms that the story has come to an end. There was a huge conflict, which was resolved, and these characters never had another major disagreement. We are incredibly proud to have been a part of its creation, look forward to its imminent release, and hope to host many more film productions by Sparkling Rose Production."

The "Nemesis From Genesis" producer, Rose Chioma Ukeaja Rose Chioma Ukeaja affirmed that "The Nigerian movie industry has without doubt evolved over the years. With new technology and ideas in movie making. We have a lot lined up for next year, some of which I'm really excited about but can't talk about yet. As they say in TV land, "stay tuned."

Events / NCAC Lagos Zone Organises Send-forth Party For Outgoing Staff by PTVNEWS: 8:36am On Nov 28, 2022
By Perekeme Odon

It was a colourful moment no one would forget in a hurry as three staff of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Lagos Zonal Directorate, were honoured during a send-off ceremony on Monday, November 20, 2022, to mark their retirement from the council's services.

The event, which saw friends and well-wishers gather at the NCAC Red Brick at the National Theatre to bid them farewell into retirement, was a joyous occasion. Welcoming staff and the retirees, among whom were the former Head of Lagos Zonal Directorate, Mr Dotun Victor Omoniyi; Head of Accounts Department, Mrs Emimie Christiana Ogbolu; and Mr. Anthony Anietie Etukudoh, to the event, the Acting Head of Lagos Zonal Directorate, Mr Edwin Ezenobie, commended the retirees for their dedication and commitment over the years.

Mrs. Christiana Ogbolu, who began her career at the Council in 1987 as a Visual Arts Assistant in the Visual Arts and Crafts Department and progressed to become the head of the finance and accounting department, was showered with accolades. Prior to her employment, Mrs. Ogbolu was opportune to engage extensively in the frontlining of various art exhibitions at NCAC and outside functions. She was the Treasurer of the NCAC Co-operative from its formation and later became the President in 2016 till her retirement after 35 years of service.

Speaking at the event, Christiana Ogbolu expressed gratitude for the outpouring of praise, saying, "I am gladdened and surprised by the accolades showered on me. "This event today sincerely whispered that we are one family. I want to thank everyone who contributed to putting smiles on our faces. A lot happened. Some were retrenched, and a few died along the way and never saw their retirements. You will not die in service, as I pray for your retirement in the future the way I am retiring.” She stated.

Mr. Ezenobie described the former Head of Zone, who, until his retirement, was a Director and Head of Zone of the Council, as a good man and a gentleman. He commended him for dedicating 32 years of uninterrupted service and loyalty to the Council. He urged the staff of the Council to imbibe the spirit of truthfulness, vision, diligence, hard work, and teamwork that these dedicated servants had exhibited in performing their duties in the Council.

Mr. Omoniyi was employed at the National Council for Arts and Culture as a Research Officer II in 1990, and during his 32-year sojourn in the Council, he variously served and supervised the development of various projects in different capacities at the NCAC headquarters in Abuja before becoming a Director.

The retired Council Director thanked the attendees for their cooperation and support in carrying out his Council duties. According to him, “I thank God that we are all ending well. Today is a day of sober reflection, because uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. As the leader of a company, you see a lot and say little. As long as you’re in the civil service, you must stay within the rules and work within the rules. I thank the peacemakers and those who supported me during my tenure as Zone Head in the cause of my service."

He also advised staff to cooperate with Mr. Edwin Ezenobie, whose baton falls on the mantle of leadership as the Acting Head of Zone at NCAC Lagos. “Mr. Ezenobie had been so supportive to me. We’ve had lots of quarrels, pains, and disagreements that made us fall apart and come back together, and I pray for him to rise to the peak of his career. You people should not put him in a situation that would make him behave or work otherwise.” He advised.

It is indeed a truism that the world stops when people of integrity and good leadership are celebrated! This was the case for the former Head of Zone, NCAC Lagos, Mr. Dotun Victor Omoniyi, Head of Accounts Department, Mrs. Emimie Christiana Ogbolu, and Mr. Anthony Anietie Etukudoh. The management and staff of NCAC will surely miss their leadership and also wish them well in their future endeavours.

The ADF successfully sent four containers of used medical supplies to Cameroon, Nigeria, and Uganda with the financial assistance of Thomas Tanue.

TV/Movies / Governor Bello Matawalle: A Step Too Far by PTVNEWS: 11:11am On Oct 18, 2022
The Zamfara state government has been condemned by the Directors' Guild of Nigeria (DGN) for shutting down various media outlets on Saturday, October 15, 2022, after their approval by the State Security Council.

The Guild's President, Victor Okhai, urged Zamfara State Governor, His Excellency, Bello Matawalle, to immediately reverse its decision to shut down licenced media organisations in the state, and pleaded with law enforcement agencies not to arrest and prosecute personnel of the affected stations found exercising their professional duties.

Mr. Okhai completely condemned the actions and said that we live in a country where freedom of movement and expression is guaranteed by the constitution. Every media organisation in Nigeria has the right to attend and cover any political rally held by any political party in any state.

"The state government has no unilateral jurisdiction to restrict or suspend any radio or television station on the grounds of banning all political activities in the state for security reasons. As a result, journalists are expected to carry out their professional responsibilities as enshrined in Chapter 2 Section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution, which states that "the press, radio, television, and other agencies of mass media shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in this Chapter (Chapter 2 of the Constitution) and uphold the government's responsibility and accountability to the people." He stated.

He said the governor has been sitting on a keg of gunpowder all this time, owing to the state's insecurity in addition to the brazen looting by foreigners and bandits of the resources and our collective patrimony in that state. I suppose he enjoys the state's veil of darkness so that evil can grow.

He hailed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for having categorically denounced the illegal action of the Zamfara State Government directing licensees of the Commission to cease operations in the state due to alleged violations of a government order.

The DGN President, implored the Commissioner of Police and Security Agencies in the state to disregard the request to prevent workers at the impacted stations from carrying out their proper tasks. Any aggrieved individual or institution that has a valid complaint about unprofessional conduct or action by any licenced broadcaster in Nigeria is advised to follow the procedures outlined in the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

President Okhai recalled that the country is still reeling from the Buhari-led government's June 4, 2021 suspension of Twitter in Nigeria, as well as the National Broadcasting Commission's (NBC) recent decision to withdraw the licences of fifty-two (52) broadcast stations in August 2022.

"In a democracy like ours, which recognises the role of the mass media and freedom of expression for its citizens, for a state government to arbitrarily override a section of the Nigerian constitution and the National Broadcasting Commission-NBC code speaks volumes about the level of impunity the country has descended into."

TV/Movies / Nigeria And The Academy Awards by PTVNEWS: 6:49pm On Oct 16, 2022
In light of the recent media exchanges between the Nigerian Oscar Selection Committee (NOSC) and Nollywood filmmakers, which have expressed concern among Nigerians over the country's lack of representation at the 2023 Oscar, Victor Okhai, President, Directors' Guild of Nigeria (DGN), has recommended filmmakers focus on making and creating wonderful films rather than engaging in any internal conflict that would distract from this.

When the first Academy Awards ceremony was held in 1929 to honour films released in 1927 and 1928, no mention was made of foreign-language films. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created the Foreign Language Film category in 1956 and invited film industries across the world to submit their best films. Since then, the Academy has given the IFF Award to a feature-length motion picture produced outside of the United States that has 80% or more non-English dialogue.

The Foreign Language Film Award Committee is in charge of overseeing the process and reviewing all films submitted. Following that, they vote by secret ballot to choose the five award nominees. The first recipient was the Italian neorealist film "La Strada," whose citation stated, "The high quality of this motion picture, brought to eloquent life in a country scared by war, is proof to the world that the creative spirit can triumph over adversity." The outstanding quality of this motion picture, brought to expressive life in a war-torn country, is testament to the world that the creative spirit can triumph over adversity," helped establish Federico Fellini as one of Europe's most influential directors. Similar awards were given out in subsequent years. In the following years, similar awards were given to seven other films.

During the early post-war era (1947–1955), eight foreign language films received special/honorary awards. Academy leader and board member Jean Hersholt argued, "An international award, if properly and carefully administered, would promote a closer relationship between American film craftsmen and those of other countries".

Eight foreign language films got special or honorary honours during the early postwar period (1947–1955). Jean Hersholt, a member of the Academy's board of directors, stated, "An international prize, if properly and carefully administered, would create a stronger interaction between American film professionals and those of other countries."

The International Feature Film award, in contrast to other Academy Awards, is given to the submitting nation as a whole rather than to a specific person (although the film's director does accept it on stage).

Since the Chineze Anyaene-Abonyi led Nigerian Oscar Selection Committee (NOSC), registered under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as "The Oscar Selection Association of Nigeria," a cultural organisation whose aim is to recognise and promote the art of cinema by exhibiting Nigerian films and filmmakers to the Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, for the category of Best Foreign Film, the committee has submitted two Nigerian feature films to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards.

The academy's board of governors agreed on April 23, 2019, that the category would be renamed Best International Feature Film, commencing with the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020. It was stated that the term "foreign" was "outdated within the global filmmaking community," and that the new name "better represents this category, and promotes a positive and inclusive view of filmmaking and the art of film as a universal experience." This category will also allow animated and factual films.

Nigerian filmmakers approach their craft differently because they are all driven by the desire to win the Oscar rather than by the need to ensure that the films they are submitting to the International Feature Film (IFF) category of the Academy Awards are technically and artistically up to par.

To be eligible for the Academy Awards, a film must also meet a number of additional requirements, such as being dominated by the native language of the country it represents, being released during the calendar period mandated by the Oscars, having appropriate English subtitles, and having been seen in cinemas or theatres for at least seven days in the nation it represents before being shown on streamers like Netflix, Amazon, and terrestrial television.

In 2019, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences caused a stir by disqualifying the first Oscar entry from Nigeria's massive film industry. The submission of the film was seen as a watershed moment for the country's film industry, known as Nollywood. It's a film called "Lionheart," which is Genevieve Nnaji’s first directing debut that met every other requirement, and it was disqualified from the International Feature category because the 95-minute film "Lionheart" is largely in English, with an 11-minute section in the Igbo language. The decision prompted widespread outrage and criticism in the Nigerian, British, and American film industries, like Ms. Ava DuVernay, director of "Selma and A Wrinkle in Time," with many blaming colonialism rather than Nigerian filmmakers. Others sided with the Academy, arguing that the rules for the best international feature film applications are well defined.

The Executive Committee for the International Feature Film (IFF) category of the Oscars confirmed in January 2021 that Nigeria's official entry, "The Milkmaid," a Hausa language insurgency thriller produced and directed by Desmond Ovbiagele, was eligible after submission in December 2020, along with other contenders for the 93rd Academy Awards. Nigerians' expectations, however, were dashed once more when it failed to make the first shortlist of the 15 foreign films chosen for the International Feature Film category.

In a sense, the fact that European films are already produced in foreign languages gives them an advantage, especially those in languages like German, French, Spanish, or Italian, even though they are currently not in very good shape because they don’t have the places to distribute the films. Unlike Nigeria, that has a clear open market.
The fact that Nigerian films are not eligible for submission at the awards ceremony is due to a number of factors impeding international attention, including a lack of funding for collaborations and technical support from foreign institutions. Meeting minimum tech specs and strict adherence to the requirements for qualification and submission instead of whipping up sentiments remain a basic challenge.

Prior to the establishment of the Nigerian Oscar Committee in 2013, Nollywood productions frequently failed to meet the technical requirements of a cinema film due to the emphasis on home videos. However, with the emergence of multiple streaming platforms, they appear to be more promising, but it remains to be seen how far and sustainable the current trend will last.

The Nigerian film industry is attempting to demonstrate that it can compete favourably with other developing film nations throughout the world. However, even if the quality of Nollywood productions improve, an Oscar nomination or win is not certain as we continue to drag ourselves out there, especially when the Oscars are coming up.

The Oscars are merely a marketing game in which anyone who can attract attention can win. The quality of films at the Oscars will not depreciate, as good films will always stand out. National interests should take precedence over personal interests, as the Oscar is not the beginning and end of the world. Nigerian filmmakers should focus on making good films and, as much as possible, avoid dragging ourselves before the Oscars.

Nigeria is not the only nation embroiled in controversy over the submission of an ineligible film. Film critics and other interested parties are also upset and perplexed about Egypt's failure to submit any movies for the International Feature Film Award.

In nearly 75 years, just three African films have won the Oscar for best foreign feature, and despite the enormity of Bollywood's film industry, India has never won the award for best international film. The category is dominated by Europe. The last time a film representing an African country garnered a nomination was Kaouther Ben Hania's "The Man Who Sold His Skin," which represented Tunisia at the 93rd Academy Awards earlier this year. After being nominated with "Yesterday" the previous year, the South African film "Tsotsi" won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006, one of the few times the prize went to an African country. South Korea's entrant, Parasite, became the first international feature film winner and the first non-English film overall in 2020.

The fact that Nigerian films are not eligible for entry into the awards ceremony is due to a number of issues that prevent worldwide recognition, such as a lack of funding for partnerships and technical assistance from foreign organisations to give the film a global appeal following the subject it's treating and a lack of government support to fund the producers and directors to hit the international market. Making movies is an expensive endeavour, and like with any investment, a clear path to returns must be provided.
Few people are ready to accept the chance, especially given the abundance of safer ways to profit.

Can we begin by winning top film festivals, where we can compete on the global stage with the best? Can we focus solely on winning our at own top film festivals? The world, like our colleagues in music, accepted and applauded our stars before the Grammys. Quality comes first, followed by recognition. With the kind of production that has been coming out of the business in recent times, we are well on our way.

The Oscars will find us at the right time if we focus more on the work that we do. The recognition that we get from the work that we do is far more valuable than any validation that will come from any external source.

Education / A Communiqué Of The Choba Academic Research Initiative (cari) by PTVNEWS: 8:30am On Sep 11, 2022
A COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE CHOBA ACADEMIC RESEARCH INITIATIVE (CARI)

INTRODUCTION

This communiqué is one of the highlights of an extraordinary two-day retreat of the "Choba Academic Research Initiative (CARI)," which took place from the 26th to the 27th of August, 2022, at Mess-Tro Hotel and Resort, No. 10 Onugboji Street, Ahoada Town, Rivers state, Nigeria.

The Choba Academic Research Initiative is a group of forward-thinking individuals from around Nigeria, including academics, entrepreneurs, and civil servants. CARI is a non-religious, non-partisan, and non-tribal organisation that promotes inclusive peace, growth, and development in our communities through research-driven interventions. We are dedicated to achieving set objectives in the greater interest of society.

COMMUNIQUÉ TITLE

REINVENTING NIGERIA: ISSUES AND STRATEGIES

After a lengthy brainstorming session in which we critically analysed the current state of the nation and explored the possibilities of reinventing Nigeria, we reached some painful conclusions: Nigeria is at the crossroads between survival and death, with all the trappings of a failed or failing state. Simply put, Nigeria is at a precipice.

The extent of poverty, corruption, unemployment, misery, and division in this once prosperous and peaceful country is startling. This is a recipe for a further crisis of armageddonian proportions. The "we versus them" mentality is at an all-time high in our country's history. The emotional and cognitive references to Nigeria by Nigerians and other people around the world are completely negative and undesirable.

From being Africa's giant and hope, Nigeria is now known as the world's poverty capital, zoo, and other unflattering terms. The feeling and thinking by the majority of ordinary Nigerians is that because the country does not care for them, they, in turn, do not love and do not care about them. Patriotism is zero or near zero among Nigerians today, even the armed forces.

The wonderful life promised by democracy has remained elusive, and both leaders and the followers are to blame; the leaders have abused the trust, power, and privilege bestowed on them, while the followers have demonstrated bastardly levels of docility and helplessness.

Our ideas and claims to nationhood and constitutionalism are questionable and perverted. Not only is Nigeria a mere nation state, it is also not on the road to nationhood. The operational 1999 constitution is fraught with a lot of challenges, especially the fact that it is not the people’s constitution per se. This has hindered the possibility of having a system that is truly governed on the principles of the rule of law and democracy.

As we march towards the 2023 elections, the task before the contending parties and candidates includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Nigeria should be restructured immediately along the lines of true federalism. The very idea of the federating units of the country (states and local governments) queuing up in Abuja every month to share the national revenue, based on a warped sharing formula that has created disincentives for competition and efficiency, MUST stop forthwith. We believe that all and every president of Nigeria will fail unless Nigeria is restructured.

Constitutional, judicial and electoral reforms and the courageous cum consistent implementation are required to ensure a thorough and successful leadership recruitment process and system of accountability, and MUST be pursued with courage, dedication, and high patriotic verve.

We believe strongly that everything rises and falls on leadership, and a nation cannot rise above the quality of its leadership. The economy, education, health care, infrastructure, security, and other issues can only be addressed by competent and patriotic leadership capable of mobilising the people and resources of Nigeria for greater glory.

CONCLUSION

We are super confident and optimistic that Nigeria, like the phoenix, can rise again from the ashes of its self-inflicted ruin. Hence, we are calling on Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to hearken and commit to the heaven-inspired national anthem of Nigeria:

“Arise, o compatriot
Nigeria’s call obey
To serve our fatherland
With love and strength and faith
The labour of our heroes past
Shall never be in vain
To serve with heart and might
One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity.”

Art, Graphics & Video / Writers Congregate In Lagos As IFBA And LSFVCB Hold Screenwriting Workshops by PTVNEWS: 5:59am On Jul 12, 2022
By Perekeme Odon

In light of the need for capacity building and a higher level of professionalism in the Nigerian motion picture industry, A 5-Day intensive Master Class in Screenwriting workshop by the International Film and Broadcast Academy, Lagos, Nigeria has distilled the essential elements from the world's best screenwriting programmes to create a super-intensive screenwriting workshop.

The workshop, which was a partnership between the International Film and Broadcast Academy (IFBA) and the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board (LSFVCB), was held at 13 Simisola Street, Surulere, Lagos on June 13-17, 2022 and received over 100 submissions via email from aspiring screenwriters with little or no screenwriting experience who wish to improve their storytelling skills and explore the fine art of writing visual narratives.

According to the lead resource person, Mr Yinka Ogun, President, Screen Writers Guild of Nigeria (SWGN), and a screenwriting mentor whose credits include ‘Tinsel, Oloture (Netflix original), Your Excellency, The Royal Hibiscus Hotel, who openly expressed his respect for the organizers and Mr Victor Okhai was excited with the turnout and hailed the outcome. “They have been equipped to go out there and excel as storytellers. The sky can only be their springboard going forward."

Mr Ogun affirmed that “But hey, I have a lot of respect for Mr Victor Okhai as a practitioner, director and film proprietor. Screenwriting is getting better with each passing day. If more people dedicated their time to improving themselves personally, I think that we will soon arrive at a very good pace and soon have good writers."

With strict adherence to the rituals of writing and learning, the workshop concentrated on the professional development of various aspiring screenwriters in the film and television industry who can work in a fast-paced, high-pressure, focused and experienced environment to seasoned career writers, as recommended by Mr Victor Okhai, President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), and participants had the opportunity to develop a fully structured outline for a feature-length screenplay, including several completed scenes, and complete short.

Mr Kingsley Omoefe, former Vice President, Directors’ Guild of Nigeria and one of the participants who are not strange to IFBA organized workshop appreciated the moves taken by IFBA and LSFVCB to equip writers in the industry. “It’s quite an insightful, interesting and impactful programme which I benefitted a lot. It couldn’t have come at a better time than this time. Mr Victor Okhai is a perfectionist and wants everything to be done rightly, and that translates to whatever he’s doing. He did the best in the person of Mr Yinka Ogun, our resource person who is an experienced writer, and one of the best creative screenwriters in Africa. For LSFVCB to partner with IFBA shows how credible the institution is, and very important for Lagos state to want to take the creative industry to the next level.”

2022 Overall Winner of Aforevo Nollywood Screenwriting Competition, and the N1 Million winner, Cosmos O. Abasi expressed his excitement about his participation while commending the organizers for their contribution to the success of screenwriting in the film industry in Nigeria.

“I thank the organizers, LSFVCB and IBFA for doing a great job to put this together, and I wish stuff goes into several other departments of filmmaking. The training has been novel, exciting, interesting, educating and sort of an eye-opener, because I’ve learned a lot about different kinds of pitch decks from the resource person, Mr Yinka Ogun, and our amiable DGN president, Mr., Victor Okhai. So now, I can conveniently say, I know how to pitch.” He stated.

The President of the DGN, Mr Victor Okhai, who was enthusiastic about the workshop, remarked that the method of storytelling through screenwriting is both an art and a science. According to him, the workshop is intended to be a quarterly event as we have several ongoing classes and master classes in directing, production, cinematography, art design, and costume and makeup.

“This workshop is supposed to be a quarterly event, as we have several ongoing classes and master classes on directing, producing, cinematography, art designing, and costume and makeup. We must learn the art of storytelling and master it, but you need to know how to package them so they can pitch them successfully to potential investors and platforms to get funding to the next level.“

The DGN President explained that human stories are stories that every human being can relate to, and if you know how to tell them well, regardless of the setting and location, people will relate to the story, exactly how you do it with some movies will never be forgotten even growing up as a kid.

“Screenwriting is both an art and a science. Everyone is capable of speaking, but not everyone can captivate an audience. Anyone can write, but everyone can write the kind of material that holds audiences captive for more than 90 minutes in a dark room. You cannot do magic if you have a brilliant director and a poor script. People will relate to a tale if it is told well, regardless of location or climate, much like with some films that you will never forget even as a little child. Human stories are stories that anyone can relate to.” Okhai stated.

Okhai also expressed gratitude to Mrs Bukola Agbamiloja, Executive Secretary, Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board and the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu for their proactive support for Nigerian filmmakers.

Culture / CDGN Debuts Exhibition To Celebrate Nigerian Culture And Heritage by PTVNEWS: 2:20am On Jun 13, 2022
By Perekeme Odon

It was pomp and pageantry in Ikeja, the capital of Lagos as the Creative Designers Guild of Nigeria, CDGN, in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board (LSFVCB), hosted the first-ever cultural and entertainment exhibition in Nollywood, Nigeria, with the theme "Expanding Cultural Creativity Through Entrepreneurship."

The one-day event, held on Friday, June 10, 2022, at the CitiHeight Luxury Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos state, highlighted and showcased the exhibition of cultural designs and attires spanning different Nollywood movies, ethnic groups, beads, various forms of makeup, and African hairstyles, resulting in the existence of cultural diversity in Nigeria, as well as a renaissance of its fading cultural heritage due to the influx of western domination.

Mrs Joy Osawaru-Akinyemi, the Lagos state chairman of the Creative Designers Guild of Nigeria, in her opening address, applauded them for attending. “ I welcome you all to this great event, and I appreciated the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board for their cooperation in hosting the programme. The exhibition is about the way we are, who we are and the way we do our things. We Nigerians should love who we are and be ourselves. We need to go back to our culture and represent our ways of dressing and doing things. Each time you see or notice a piece of artwork, that beautiful dress, that traditional makeup in a movie, it is because our members made it happen, and through that, we have continued to preserve and promote our culture to the world through our arts.”

Mrs Akinyemi went revealed that the event was organised pursuant to the State Government’s commitment to repositioning the entertainment sector to fulfil its potential as a primary revenue generator and employer of creative talents, through entrepreneurship, as well as how young people can turn their creativity into significant wealth.

“Our creativity should be export bound and encourage tourism like how countries like India and China are doing, that is why we have the panelist session where we talked about creativity and entrepreneurship to the youths and students to know there is livelihood in creativity so as to have positive decisions. This exhibition would be an annual event to ensure that the youths are conversant with aspects of the creative industry that could be explored for wealth creation.“ She stated.

The Hon. Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Pharm. Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Oyinade Nathan-Marsh, in her keynote address at the event commended Mrs Joy Osawaru-Akinyemi and the CDGN for providing a one-stop culture and creativity exhibition to Nigerians, particularly Lagos residents, with all-inclusive facilities to cater to various interests in the arts and filmmaking.

“I greatly commend the Creative Designers Guild of Nigeria for the incredible work. Africa for the longest time has remained a giant and a leading voice when it comes to creative space, and the testament to this can be seen in the various creative arts that are being delivered from the continent daily, especially from Nigeria’s Nollywood. To say that Nollywood has become a significant contributor to Africa and global creativity is to put it very subtly. As the industry has become recognized as the fastest-growing movie industry on the continent, I am extremely pleased to join creative in the house today at this culture and entertainment exhibition, the maiden one.”

She stressed that the Nigerian movie industry has grown into one of the country’s greatest exports and also into national pride. As the economic hub of the nation, we must begin to blaze the trail and seek to transform the entertainment industry in accordance with global best practices.

“Most times, when we watch movies, we are overtly amazed by the actors and actresses, and we tend to forget the outstanding efforts of those behind the scene, like the costume designer, the makeup artist, hair stylist, prop managers, set designers, and everyone else who put an indescribable amount of energy and hard work to ensure our movies are top-notch and amazing. Progress is being registered in our cinematography and picture quality, storytelling method, scriptwriting, special effect makeup and so many other aspects. And all this is all thanks to creative professionals that are here today.”

The Commissioner expressed her appreciation to the Guild for honouring her and deemed her deserving of the guild award for her services to the Nollywood audiovisual sector and efforts to promote the arts. She told them that she would not rest on her achievements, but would do everything she could to ensure that their joint vision for Lagos' broader arts and entertainment sector becomes a reality.

“My profound appreciation goes to the guild for honouring and deeming me fit to be a recipient of the guild’s award for the recognition of my effort in uplifting the art and my contributions to the audio visual industry in Nollywood. I assure you not to rest on my oars but continue to put in my best for the collective dream for the greater Lagos art and entertainment sector to be achieved. ”

A panel discussion for schools and educational institutions was the event's high point. Mazi Uche Anyamele moderated the session, and the panelists included, Mrs Iyen Agbonifo-Obaseki, production designer and former CDGN President, Mr. Patrick Lee, President, Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), Ms Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, thespian and doyen of the art, Sewedo Nupowaku, Communications Consultant. Also in attendance at the panel discussions were Dr Tony Akposheri, filmmaker/DGN Vice President, and Arc. Dr. Kuti Ezebiro, Architect, academic and public intellectual.

The panelists shared experiences and engaged in stimulating conversations about possible collaborations and partnerships between producers and cinema operators, against profanity, vulgar language, scenes of excessive violence and negative African stereotypes in films to guide against social decline.

Veteran Nollywood actor, Dr Tony Akposheri, encouraged the youth to explore their inherent artistic talent as a weapon for economic growth for themselves and the nation. He advised actors to explore more themes relating to love as opposed to rituals.

He said, "They should focus more on telling African history in movies to educate children and keep them abreast of the dictates of African culture and history."

Sewedo Nupowaku, a communications consultant, also urged the youth to explore the latest technology to promote the nation's cultural heritage. “We can make money off our culture, but what are we doing about it? How are we galvanizing ourselves to tell our stories with the latest technology, with well-crafted and welled research scripts? We can tell our stories as good as anyone else.”

Nupowaku emphasized that the idea of this workshop is for people to learn and know more about our heritage. They need to be more up-to-date with our history and show more interest so that they are very excited to support our heritage. “Our culture goes beyond the movies, the music, our dressings, books, and dancing. The young folks have already been short because, for a long time, history has not been taught in our classrooms.”

Ms Ajai-Lycett caused a stir when she said people need to be careful about the health effects of skin bleaching as it affects the liver and could lead to skin or liver cancer.

“If we accept to maintain our natural skin and hair, we will be creative with them to improve our economy as a nation because there is a massive business in it for us, but we are unconscious of it. And what breaks my heart most is that celebrities are found in that habit of promoting skin bleaching, and wearing wigs, and they go as far as selling it to the public, this is bad, and I advise that they desist from that bad habit. We do not need to imitate the western world; I advise that we remain black, bold and beautiful,” she said.

Dr Kuti Ezebiro, architect, academic and public intellectual, educated the audience on the economics of culture and the thriving entrepreneurship within it.

“Every great thing goes through three basic stages in life. The first stage would be an expression (argument), ridicule (antagonize) and discussion/reception (acceptance). Culture is economics, and unless we understand how culture produces economics, then we will continue to identify with relics. Culture in the real essence is the spirit that drives the expression that you see as aesthetics or activity. Unless we understand that spirit and affirm it, then we are all exhibitionists of relics. If you want to see African culture in terms of fashion, then we begin to look at the Zulus, Ghanaians, and maybe in Nigeria, the Tiv, and Yoruba for the Asoke.” He said.

The entertainment business, according to Dr Kuti Ezebiro, may reorient itself. When you genuinely comprehend the anthology of your being and that culture is the lifestream that gives you your being, identity, and aspiration, you are truly an activist and protagonist of your own culture.

Mr Patrick Lee, President, Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria and Cinema Owners affirmed that “We are unable to find movies that tell our history, culture and tradition. When I went round the exhibition today, one of the things that struck me was that when we show our movies or showcase them, these very important people in the background are never ever credited to a large extent to the work they delivered.”

The one-day event was not just about culture, but also entertainment through comedy, spoken words with cultural melodies and beats, and awarding of honours to deserving guild members and the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos, who have contributed enormously to the state's film industry.

Culture / Igbo Day: NCAC Lagos Celebrates World Cultural Day by PTVNEWS: 5:29am On May 27, 2022
By Perekeme Odon

As part of celebrations to observe the 2022 UNESCO proclaimed World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, the Lagos State Zone of the National Council of Arts and Culture, NCAC, highlighted the rich tradition and culture of Nigeria's Igbo tribe.

The event, which took place on Monday, May 23, 2022, at the NCAC Lagos, Red Brick Complex at the National Theatre, attracted dignitaries from throughout the country and emphasized the rich cultural legacy of the Igbo, with traditional cuisines, dances, and theatre to the delight of everyone present.

Breaking the kola nut and praying in the traditional Igbo process was Chief Nze George Ohanunma, a retired naval officer and NCAC Artistes Village businessman. "The Yoruba make kola nuts, the Hausa eat them, but the Igbo worship them. Kola-nut is all about life; whoever offers kola is giving life. Kola-nut represents peace and progress; may we all experienced progress in our homes, communities, and Nigeria as a whole."

Mr Dotun Victor Omoniyi, NCAC Lagos Zonal Director, welcomed everyone and praised the staff for their assistance and unwavering dedication to the event's success. He also expressed gratitude to NCAC Director-General, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, for their productive relationship and support in the preservation of Nigerian culture, and stated that the Council had chosen to honour the rich Igbo culture this year because they are one of Nigeria's most distinct ethnic groups.

"I will want to thank the staff for their efforts in packaging this event, and the DG, NCAC, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe for giving NCAC Lagos Zone the chance to exhibit their talents, as I welcome members of the public to this beautiful ceremony of the Igbo people. We are celebrating Igbo culture today because they are one of the unique people in Nigeria. Culture is dynamic and every culture has its uniqueness, and you will agree with me that the Igbo culture is one of the richest cultures in Nigeria.” He stated.

Mr Ominiyi stated that “The Igbos is a very resilient, prosperous, industrious and enterprising people. We all have our diversities. Igbo day is a part of the cultural programme at the NCAC. Two years ago before COVID-19, we had one on a micro level, and that’s Ekiti Day, in which we tried to manufacture the diversities in our manifestation of the Yoruba people. It was a very grand occasion held in this place. So from then, it was agreed that every 21 of May, we are going to pick out one ethnic group in Nigeria to celebrate their culture, and on this day, we are proud to be associated with the Igbo culture." Omoniyi said.

The NCAC Lagos Zonal Director updated the audience on our cultural diversity. “As a cultural officer, I don’t believe one culture is superior to the other. Each culture is unique to its own people. There is uniqueness in our diversities through our culture, dresses, dances, philosophies, worldview, and the way we do things, and these are the strength we have to move this nation forward. No matter the challenges facing us in Nigeria, we have to move on by appreciating ourselves. ”

Mr Mufu Onifade, an independent arts and crafts specialist, supplemented the opinions of the NCAC Zonal director by underlining the richness of Igbo culture. "Celebrating the richness of Igbo culture (as part of the activities marking the UNESCO-declared World Day for Cultural Diversity) is an attestation to the vitality of the values and morals of Igbo cultural efficacy. Igbo (also corruptly called Ibo) comprises a people of South-Eastern Nigeria, whose main language is Igbo, a language of the Benue-Congo branch of the Niger-Congo language family. The Igbo may be grouped into the following main cultural divisions: Northern, Southern, Western, and Eastern Igbo. They are an ethnic group in Nigeria who are primarily found in modern-day Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and the Imo States. Often called 'Ndi 'Igbo, some of them are also found in Delta and Rivers States. This ethnic group can also be found outside Nigeria in Cameroon, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea. The Igbo cosmology is a total encapsulation of its components such as culture, which is a way of life; art, literature, music, drama and folklore" Onifade said.

Addressing the media, Prof Sunday Ododo, Director General and CEO of the National Theatre applauded the performances and encouraged Nigerians to live in peace. Cultural diversity, he argued, can be a source of strength that makes a country stronger and more united. However, to achieve this, everyone must work together. “Cultural diversity can create a source of strength to promote unity. In another word, we need each other to achieve a lot to survive and make progress. In Nigeria today, some zones have oil, crops, and cocoa, while others don’t. We were taught today that Western Nigeria produce kola-nut, the North eats it, and the East worships it. So we depend on each other to feed ourselves for our spirituality. Therefore, Nigeria should take a lesson from this event, and embrace peace. War is nobody’s gain, but peace, it is. Without peace, there won’t be development. We need peace to have a greater stride in development, and to that effect, we should all close rank and file to ensure that the Nigerian nation survives, and make progress better than it has done so far.” He stated.

The event, which included stories, dances, music, plays, tongue-twisting and body adornments to represent the Igbo cultural past, could be preserved through regular stage presentations and film productions. One of the most memorable aspects of the colourful event was the presentation of Igbo cuisine by Mrs Nneka Akwara, Head of Research and Documentation, who enthralled the audience with a presentation on the different cuisines of the Igbo in southern-eastern Nigeria.

Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed, Artistic Director and CEO of the National Troupe of Nigeria, in an interview with the media, welcomed the initiative of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Lagos Zone, and commended the Head of Zone and staff for taking the bold step of organizing the event.

“What I saw basically rhymed with the theme of this year’s World Culture Day, which is talking about peace and peacebuilding in Nigeria. The drama and dances I saw talk about building one another and also looking at us as one. Marriage is one key thing that brings us together, and this programme showed is about peacebuilding. The cuisine displayed was highly fantastic, and also looked at Igbo in the eyes of other people. So in every culture, there is also diversity. So unity in diversity is a keyword.” He stated.

Present also at the event were General Manager, National Theatre, Prof Sunday Ododo, Artistic Director and CEO, National Troupe of Nigeria, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed, Director, Lagos Office, National Institute of Cultural Orientation (NICO), Mr Ohi Ojo, Lagos State RATTAWU Chairman, Comrade Shola Adejumo, Mr Momoh Afegbua, Mr Lawrence Iyoha, veteran actor/director, Hajji Bello, Mc Richard, friends of the NCAC Lagos Artistes Village, and the general public.

Religion / Showdown In Lagos As Bishop Ighalo Holds A Touch From Heaven by PTVNEWS: 5:47pm On Apr 23, 2022
By Perekeme Odon

Lagos super-church, A Touch From Heaven Ministries (ATFHM), lived up to its bill with an incredible congregation of Christians in the metropolis of Agege when they held their annual evangelism programme on Saturday, April 16, 2022.

The one-day capacity filled event with the theme, “A Touch From Heaven,” which took place at the Ifako Mini Stadium, by Ifako General Hospital, in Agege, Lagos State, was attended by people from around the world, streamed and watched online the Internet by many more,

The one-day crusade, which attracted an unprecedented population overflown from all walks of life who turned out in their numbers to receive divine power from the anointed man of God, Bishop Dr Joseph Ighalo Edoro, alongside leading bishops and pastors with sparkling eyes in attendance was filled with exciting evidence of what God has been doing,

Just as biblical Apostle Paul desired the salvation of Israel, General Overseer, A Touch From Heaven Ministries, Bishop Dr Joseph Ighalo Edoro, in his pre-crusade media chat, declared that the crusade would be one of the largest in global history in terms of human lives affected.

The programme, which was divinely ordered for the Holy Spirit's infilling, gave worshipers another chance to seek God's face in prayer, bodily healing, freedom from addiction, the fruit of the womb, breaking of curses, liberation from demonic oppression, and foodstuff to all participants.

“Today is the right and acceptable day, and no matter what, lives would be touched. The whole world is going to experience it and people are going to hook up. The word of God is quick, powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword piercing. It’s going to be a turnaround for very many people. God will prove Himself today, as it’s going to be a touch from heaven where the unimaginable happens.”

He went further to say. “Today we are going to experience another dimension of this programme. Every participant coming from outside Lagos will be taken care of, foodstuff will be distributed to every participant, and widows are going to be fully attended to.”

Dr Henry Emeka Obidi, ordained Pastor of Divine Christ City Church, Nollywood Producer/Director, and former Project Director of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, spiritually ushered in the event, which began at 10:58 am, as Dr Bolaji O. Akinyemi, Convener of Apostolic Round Table Conference of The Voice Of His Word Ministries, delivered the opening prayer to flag off the event.

Bishop Ighalo prophesied Nigeria's deliverance from its many challenges and gave clear and passionate gospel presentations with new converts making documented decisions to follow Christ. He also revealed how God led him to Nigeria because he (God) “has something special for Nigeria and Lagos in particular.”

Ighalo, who has become well-known in Lagos for his humanitarian and charity efforts, declared that God instructed him to establish this annual crusade for emancipation after recognising the difficulties and hurdles that the world, particularly Nigerians, face in their souls. He urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country, as well as citizens, including political leaders, to embrace honesty, stating, “righteousness exalt a nation.”

“It is a thing of joy to organize this annual crusade after preaching the gospel of Christ all over the world. We realize that this is a difficult time for the whole world, particularly Nigerians. A lot of states in Nigeria asked us to come to them but we decided to choose Lagos because the Holy Spirit has directed us here.” Ighalo stated

The Edo state born clergy, as with every crusade, felt the Lord's healing touch, prayed in Jesus' name for those in need of healing and urged them to come to the platform to tell their new testimony while widows, single women, single moms, and people, in general, were given presents and food.

The Ifako-Agege Crusade is a testimony to the extraordinary “evangelism infrastructure” A Touch Of Heaven ministries has built over the past few years. For three weeks before the official start, the ATFH Evangelism team and volunteers worked tirelessly in the streets of Lagos and its surrounding communities. They preached and drummed from ATFH ‘Gospel Trucks’ and spent time evangelizing in marketplaces to create awareness.

This year’s crusade featured ministrations from divinely blessed and gifted gospel ministers such as Bishop Olufemi Bankole, Bishop Dr Mark Oturu, Bishop Oliver Praise, Rev. Dr Idorenyin Johnson, Apostle Sam Charles, and the only lady minister, Rev. Mrs Joy Osawaru-Akinyemi. The music ministration featured Dr Funmi Andrews, Yemi Davis, J . J Praise, and The Voice of Salvation Choir.

The astounding crowd included prominent church leaders and Nollywood celebrity, Mr Tony Akposheri (Zaky of New Masquerade) was present to benefit from the healing session. All in all, it was another high-water mark for the more than 10-year-old ministry and a vital reminder that God’s heart still beats to see the lost come home to Him.

Health / PVC Naija Initiative Provides Ukraine War Evacuees With Psychological Support by PTVNEWS: 10:21am On Apr 11, 2022
By Perekeme Odon

A two-day psychological trauma clinic for Ukraine returnees has been launched in Abuja in an effort to assuage the terrible suffering of Nigerian returnees from Ukraine. The programme, which is an idea of Project Victory Call Initiative, also known as PVC-Naija, would be reproduced across the country's six geographic zones.

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) is coordinating it in collaboration with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).

Dr Bolaji O. Akinyemi, Convener/ President of Project Victory Call Initiative (PVC-Naija Initiative) and the project's initiator, said at the opening ceremony on Thursday at the State House Auditorium, Presidential Villa, that trauma evaluation and therapy became necessary because “when we have events that expose individuals to trauma, it is better that we nip them in the bud and that was what informed the idea of this project”.

Dr Akinyemi emphasised the importance of the program's prompt creation, stating that trauma has resulted in mental and socio-psychological issues. He commended the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, the National Commissioner for NCFRMI, and the entire team for the program's initiative, and applauded both organisations for their quick response in embracing the initiative.
"I believe that you will get the needed help," Dr Akinyemi said, encouraging the returnees to open up during sessions with the experts, stating, "We're trusting that we will take this to all the regions so that people won't have to travel to get this." He also informed the returnees that the PVC Initiative's services would be free and available to any and all returnees at no expense to the government.

NIDCOM CEO, Hon. Dr Dabiri-Erewa commended Dr Akinyemi’s effort that stating, “The passion with which he said we must do this for them, I agreed with him completely.”

The NiDCOM boss stated that she immediately contacted the Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim who said, “We must do this as quickly as possible.”

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa also expressed her displeasure with the profiling and imprisonment of Nigerians and other Africans in Polish detention centres, saying that it is highly “unacceptable and reprehensible.”

She noted that, despite President Mohammadu Buhari's efforts to ensure that Nigerians caught up in the conflict returned home, some chose to remain in countries such as Poland, stressing that the most appropriate action for Poland to take would be to return them to their countries rather than detain them in tortuous detention centres.

The NiDCOM chief confirmed that the two-day clinic was only the beginning of what will be an ongoing exercise across the country's six geopolitical zones. NiDCOM has also collaborated with The Sunshine Series to provide a 24-hour helpline (#112) for returnees in need of counselling.

“We tend to ignore our mental health but mental health is key." Says Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Federal Commissioner, Refugees Commission. “As Nigerians, we have a lot of resilience we have that ability, but not everybody has the same threshold when it comes to resilience and hence the need for this particular platform so that those that need extra support or extra care and assistance, can be able to access it”.

The NCFRMI, according to Hajiya Sulaiman-Ibrahim, is the government's primary organ for rehabilitation, relocation, and integration, and psychosocial support is at the heart of rehabilitation.

She went on to say that NCFRMI has offices in 14 different locations and that they are willing to make their offices available to ensure that the Project Victory Call Initiative (PVC) team and academic specialists collaborate to make this counselling available to returnees.

Mr Fehintola Damilola Moses, President of Nigerian Students in Ukraine, thanked President Muhammadu Buhari, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. (Dr.) Abike Dabiri-Erewa and the team of the Nigerian in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Nigerian Ambassador to Ukraine Shina Feege, Nigerian diaspora organizations, NGOs and all other government agencies for their quick response and rescue of the students from Ukraine.
He described how horrible the situation was and recalled the terrifying experiences that most of the returnees had during the war between Russia and Ukraine. From spending nights in an insufficient bunker without power to being racially profiled in some cases to facing food scarcity and having to travel for days without stopping in order to escape the war. "We had to boil snow to drink the water due to a lack of water," he explained.

The Vice-Chancellor, Senate, and Management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto and the University of Jos released experts assembled by PVC-Naija for psychological trauma evaluation and counselling.

Dr. Abdulsalam Halimatu Sa'adiya, Dr. Mustapha Ahmad, Dr. Attahiru Abusufyan, Prof. Mufutau Yunusa, and Mrs. Moses Unongu of the NCFRMI are among the experts.
