WWE NXT STAND AND DELIVER NIGHT 2 REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS Finn Bálor vs. Karrion Kross It’s business, but it’s also personal. By the numbers Finn Bálor is the icon of NXT, with two title reigns combined that equal almost 500 total days as NXT champion. “The Prince” has nothing to prove except to himself, but that alone is powerful motivation for an athlete as driven as him. The record books also record that Karrion Kross was only a three day champion before having to abdicate the title due to a shoulder injury, and it was this injury that allowed Bálor to claim the vacant title. Kross wants to prove he can be the champion he should have been, but he also wants to prove Bálor wrong — he won’t “drown” in the ocean of Bálor’s experience. Only one man walked away last night having proved their point. For his part Bálor didn’t seem too worried about the outcome. If you like a hard hitting contest with a lot of near falls, submission attempts and no interference, this was your cup of tea. I drank thirstily and may have even spilled a little of the tea. Scarlett stayed on the outside, cheering her man on, but otherwise leaving it up to the competitors to take care of business. Bálor tried to work both the left arm and the midsection to weaken Kross so he’d be unable to breathe in the ocean of the match, but all of those assaults couldn’t keep him down. Even the coup de grace couldn’t keep him down. In the end Kross unleashed a furious assault of ground and pound from behind to knock him out, hit a Saito suplex to wake him back up, then hit a forearm to the back of the head to knock him out AGAIN. That’s how Karrion Kross became champion for a second time. Adam Cole vs. Kyle O’Reilly This match was ENTIRELY personal. After years of friendship together in The Undisputed Era, that bond was weakened as Kyle O’Reilly sought to dethrone Bálor, and an enraged Adam Cole superkicked him for his efforts. In the aftermath Cole’s crew of ne’er-do-wells dissolved and the excuses began to flow. Cole claimed he was a blind man just now seeing that the group he led was only holding him back. O’Reilly claimed Cole was a lying manipulator who was always in it for himself, and that while Cole had stagnated in his arrogance, O’Reilly was the one who grew to become a better human being. They fought. They yelled. They signed a “hold harmless” agreement and fought some more. Adam Cole (bay bay) was confident he’d be the last man standing after Takeover night two. For his part Kyle O’Reilly couldn’t wait to get started, head moshing his way to the ring. And Adam Cole “bay bay” was just as psyched for the war to come. I’m not sure that words can do this match justice. I would tell you to get Peacock just to watch it, but I don’t get anything in return from them if I do, and I heard their stream crashes several times alwhile you're watching. This was easily one of the sickest matches I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve seen hardcore street brawls that were less brutal. I’ve seen barbed wire exploding ring matches that were less sick. I have a better idea than using words — a few .gifs are worth at least a thousand right? So I call on our resident gif lord Qu3st to provide us with some of these - O’Reilly telling Cole to “have a seat.” -And Adam Cole saying “have two” with a Shining Wizard. -Announce table suplex...I think it’s more painful when announce tables DON’T break than when they do. -Adam Cole had to use a tire iron in desperation when O’Reilly had the advantage. -The ref begged Cole not to break O’Reilly’s neck with a steel chair onto another steel chair around his head, so Cole responded by KNOCKING HIM OUT COLD. That proved to be a fatal mistake because Cole had a pinfall for at least a seven count with no referee there to count it. The NeXTras were fine with that though as they wanted these two men to “fight for-ever.” So did I. O’Reilly tried to submit Cole with a guillotine on the entrance ramp, so Cole saved himself by taking both of them THROUGH IT to the floor. What would it take to end a match with this kind of carnage, no rules, anything goes? EXTREME SADISM. Kyle O’Reilly laid out Adam Cole with a low blow to the groin, wrapped a steel chain around his right leg up to the knee and tied it into place, jumped off the ropes and CONNECTED right to the head. That put Adam Cole down and out for three for good. Santos Escobar vs. Jordan Devlin I think interim champions are good for one thing — unification bouts. When the champion is forced into a position where he can’t defend his throne, a usurper comes along and tries to take his place, and for all of his “sangre y tradición” strut that’s exactly what Santos Escobar is. Jordan Devlin came back from the UK to prove he’s the one and only cruiserweight king, but he’d need a ladder and a title match to reclaim his crown. It’s hard to do a spot in a ladder match that long time wrestling fans haven’t already seen, so you can’t say that either man did anything unexpected, but you also can’t say either one did anything wrong. Highlights include Devlin doing a moonsault from the VERY TOP of a ladder, Devlin doing a Spanish Fly with Escobar off TWO ladders, and Escobar sending Devlin off a ladder through another ladder to the mat — the latter leaving him standing all alone under both belts. He promptly unhooked them to unify the gold. It’s worth noting that Legado del Fantasma ran out to help Escobar by interfering, even though he did not do the same for them in the tag title triple threat 24 hours ago. Johnny Gargano vs. Bronson Reed “The Colossal” Bronson Reed outlasted almost a dozen men over the course of two weeks, running the gauntlet on Wednesday to become the #1 contender to North American champion Johnny Gargano. While the monstrously athletic Reed had an undeniable size advantage going in, Gargano had the same ace up his sleeve that he always does — his lovely wife Candice LeRae and their flunkies Indi Hartwell and Austin Theory. The four of them together still might not outweigh Reed, but they could still show him “The Way” things are done in NXT. Who would prevail here? How do you stop a man the size of Bronson Reed from dominating? Give him an injury to “the girth” as Wade Barrett calls it, meaning that Reed was selling his midsection for the majority of the match. Gargano would kick him in it, shove him into the announce desk with it, hit knees to the body on it when Reed was grounded, and continually try to soften the big man up. That let to Reed being one step too slow every time he went to the top rope for a Tsunami, but it didn’t hurt that Austin Theory was also running interference to make SURE that Reed never gained the upper hand. After multiple superkicks and two straight Final Beats, “Mr. Takeover” was able to retain the North American title. This was FINE. It wasn’t even close to the best thing on night two of Takeover, but they told the story they wanted to and got the job done bell to bell. Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell vs. Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart Speaking of The Way, Candice LeRae felt that she and Indi Hartwell “deserved” to be NXT’s Women’s tag team champions. Having only just recently dethroned Dakota Kai and the new women’s world champion Raquel González after they were inaugurated, Shotzi Blackheart vowed to T.C.B. (take care of business) against any challengers to their title reign. All four women were busting their asses figuratively and literally in the ring. The more I see of Indi Hartwell the more I like her, and I’ve appreciated the work of Candice LeRae since her Pro Wrestling Guerrilla days, so it’s almost a shame that they weren’t victorious at Takeover — almost. In the end though they succumbed to Moon hitting a double Eclipse on The Way, followed by Blackheart hitting a senton off the ropes to pin Hartwell. I applaud everybody involved for their effort in this title match. Breezango vs. Drake Maverick & Killian Dain WWE can’t resist adding bonus matches to the Takeover pre shows, so Breezango faced Drake Maverick & Killian Dain to determine the future #1 contender for new tag team champions MSK. There was a lot of comedy involved (as you’d expect) but the actual bell to bell wrestling was well executed. Maverick is for better or worse the perfect size for a face in peril who takes a two-on-one beatdown, and pairing him with Dain makes it even more impressive when you see him toss both Tyler Breeze and Fandango around single-handedly. Dain powerbombed his partner onto Fandango to finish the match and get the win! Grade: A+ I could give night two of Takeover that rating just for the main event alone. When you finish with a match that strong, the whole rest of the show gets elevated right along with it. If you watched Stand & Deliver night two, you’re never going to forget the brutality you saw here. It overshadows everything else on the card, even an excellent world title match where Karrion Kross was crowned the champion for a second time. No sloppy matches. No matches cut short. Everything was either good, great, or FANTASTIC. |

WWE NXT STAND AND DELIVER NIGHT 1 REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS Raquel González vs. Io Shirai With a title reign of 300+ days heading into Takeover, Io Shirai was already on the short list of most dominant women’s champions in the history of NXT. If she could survive night one of Stand & Deliver and carry the championship to next Tuesday, she’d be tied with Paige for third in consecutive days on the top, second only to Shayna Baszler and Asuka. The rising star that is the tall, strong and powerful Raquel González would be the biggest threat to her rising up the record books, but no matter how many times she beat Shirai down last Wednesday, it was the champion who left standing tall headed into tonight’s main event. Shirai busted out every last bit of offense she could attempting to extend her reign, even climbing to the top of the 20 foot tall human skull at the top of the entrance ramp for a flying crossbody, which I would have told her was ill advised given her knees seemed to crash INTO the ramp as González tried to catch her. Nevertheless Shirai took her back to the ring for a top rope moonsault afterward... and González kicked out! They fought outside the ring until González hit her one arm powerbomb on the floor. She threw Shirai back in, mocked her, and hoisted her high in the air to hit it AGAIN and become the new champion. Very solid main event overall! Tommaso Ciampa vs. WALTER The title match was the main event and deservedly so, but on any other night this is the match I would’ve wanted to headline a Takeover card. Everything about both men exudes excellent in the ring. At his peak Tommaso Ciampa reigned as the NXT champion for 200+ days, but WALTER’s record setting and current reign as NXT UK champion is over 700 and counting. Ciampa’s epic promo last week was a warning to WALTER though, born from his own hard experience and years of injuries — the higher you climb, the harder you fall. Even though it was strongly teased that Imperium would interfere on WALTER’s behalf, they didn’t actually need to... but it was close. Very close. Ciampa actually left WALTER’s chest bloody red from his chops, which is normally what we see him doing to his opponents, and he worked over WALTER’s right hand to the point he had difficulty throwing his own. At one point Ciampa was draped over the announce table when WALTER tried to throw one and he escaped, causing WALTER to break the top cover in half. It was obviously pre-cut but in the heat of the moment it was still an impressive sight. You can see it broken in the .gif below. The NeXTras around the ring encouraged them to “fight forever” and even though that chant has become incredibly cliche I couldn’t help but agree this time. Unfortunately the match ended in what was almost a let down. WALTER hit a pair of powerbombs and Ciampa kicked out even with almost three hundred pounds of weight on top of him, then WALTER took him out with a couple of chops and pinned him right as the same fans were chanting “this is awesome.” Was that the planned finish? Did they get their time cut? As great as the match was I wanted a stronger end to it than that. MSK vs. Grizzled Young Veterans vs. Legado Del Fantasma William Regal was forced to vacate the tag team titles after Danny Burch was injured while he and his partner Oney Lorcan were facing Finn Bálor and Karrion Kross. That lead us to night one of Stand & Deliver, where three different teams would meet in a triple threat to put gold around someone’s waist. MSK might have had momentum after winning the Dusty Rhodes Cup, but Legado Del Fantasma could easily have a run-in from their leader Santos Escobar, while the Grizzled Young Veterans are easily my favorite UK tag team — and quite possibly “sssssssoon” to be NXT tag team champions too. I mean this in the nicest way possible but a lot of this match was a cluster, with each team interfering as they pleased and getting in and out of the ring as they liked, leaving it difficult to keep track of who was legal and which crew had the upper hand. It took a while for the dust to settle but eventually Legado del Fantasma was taken out of the equation (with Santos Escobar nowhere in sight, leaving them to fend for themselves) and MSK were able to recreate the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Classic with the Vets! Ultimately MSK were able to effectively double team Zack Gibson. Nash Carter hoisted Gibson up, Lee jumped off the ropes and hit a cutter, and he promptly pinned Gibson to claim the gold! As much of a crazy match as it was, it was a FUN match to watch, with everybody seeming to be in the right place at the right time just as they needed to be. MSK’s victory was well earned in storyline and in the effort they put forth. North American title #1 contender Gauntlet The set up to get to this point was ridiculously absurd, but now that we’re here it’s time to find out which of six different men would “run the gauntlet,” earning the right to face Johnny Gargano for the North American title at night two of Stand & Deliver. The champion was not amused, but at least his “puplicist” was having fun ahead of the show. The match didn’t feature any eliminations until Dexter Lumis arrived, after which Isaiah Scott quickly dispatched Leon Ruff. LA Knight was able to take out Dexter Lumis by pinning him while he was trying to put The Silence on Cameron Grimes. Lumis got his revenge by putting Knight to sleep after Bronson Reed squashed him like a bug for the pin. Grimes and Scott tried to work as an alliance to take Reed out (Scott had taken a payoff to work with Grimes earlier) but ultimately Scott betrayed him and got an inside cradle. It was all for naught in the end though because three house calls couldn’t put Reed away, and he went to the top rope and hit the tsunami splash on Scott to advance to Gargano tomorrow night! Pete Dunne vs. KUSHIDA Speaking of that gauntlet match though, Pete Dunne and KUSHIDA eliminated each other trying to gain entry into night one at Takeover. Having been left out of the North American title picture, the only thing they had left to do now was fight each other, possibly gaining a little bit of revenge and the unofficial title of “best technical wrestler” in the process. Both men were hot to start at the opening bell and looked for immediate submissions. When that failed they had to settle for going move for move, hold for hold, counter for counter. KUSHIDA worked over the left arm and elbow, while Pete Dunne worked over his opponent’s fingers (nobody pulls that off as convincingly as he does). Both men were selling hard after a fiercely competitive battle, but in the end it was the BITTER END that got the job done. This was the official opener on USA Network and a fine start to the night. Zoey Stark vs. Toni Storm A late addition to the card saw Toni Storm and Zoey Stark face off on the Takeover: Stand & Deliver night one pre-show! people definitely were enjoying the opening contest, but I honestly wish I could say the same. Nothing in the match seemed to flow. It felt like Zoey Stark was lost in the ring, looking for a cue from Storm as to what to do next, always hesitating for a second before going to their next spot. I’m not trying to hold it against her given her lack of experience compared to Storm, but the sloppy finish only emphasized it, as she somehow managed to block Storm Zero for one of the worst inside cradle roll ups I’ve seen in a while. At least the second rope suplex they did together looked alright. Grade: B+ Other than WALTER vs. Tommaso Ciampa ending in a lackluster and disappointing way, there’s not that much to gripe about here. Zoey Stark and Toni Storm can be forgiven for a pre-show bout that wasn’t even announced until the day of the show, so even if they had more time to prepare it wouldn’t have been enough. Stark has a world of potential but there’s more than just doing power moves and looking strong to being a complete wrestler. She’ll get there given enough time. Toni Storm has been main roster ready for a while and should probably move on. KUSHIDA and Pete Dunne delivered from bell to bell, the three way for the tag titles got the job done, and the coronation of González means Shirai can go to Raw or SmackDown as well. Can either be used as well as Asuka, Shayna Baszler, Sasha Banks, Bayley, Charlotte Flair, et cetera? We can only hope. 1 Like 1 Share |

WWE RAW REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS Last week’s Raw recap was a special one, where I felt compelled to mock that show by grading every storyline like a report card. If you noticed, they were each graded very low. So going into Raw this week, I felt that we would get a better show as this would be the go home for the biggest pay-per-view of the year. Not only that, but the first WWE show with physical people back in an arena and able to be vocal again. Well, we didn’t. Raw was boring and underwhelming. I would almost go as far as saying even more boring and underwhelming than last week. Most of this show had not much to inspire me for WrestleMania. They didn’t even have Randy Orton, Alexa Bliss, or The Fiend on the show! They went through weeks of stuff and on the go home, they’re nowhere to be found. The one thing that I absolutely loved on this show was Bad Bunny. Bad Bunny cut the promo of his life. It was incredible. Miz and Morrison destroyed the Bugatti Bad Bunny and Damian Priest showed up in. When Bunny returned to the vehicle, they jumped him and ran off when officials stepped in. Bunny and Priest went to the ring, and Bunny said he just came here to follow his dreams because he loves this business. He recalled watching Raw and SmackDown with his father and brothers and he had a lot of good memories. He named dropped his favorite legends and included Booker T, as he made a song about him. He used to consider Miz as a favorite legend, but Miz has disrespected him and his family and fans for no reason. He apologized for the Royal Rumble spot, but said he was caught up in the moment. Miz doesn’t respect him. But at WrestleMania, he’s gonna show Miz how to respect him. Damian Priest made the match officially a tag team match. Hell yes. This promo got me excited for a match. Legitimately one of the only things on the whole show. I am actually hyped for this match at WrestleMania. Dominant challenger Drew McIntyre started the show talking about how unique his WrestleMania experience was last year. But now they’re back in business. Both he and Lashley have had similar journeys, having traveled all the roads to their respective places in WWE, but sacrifice separates them. Even when McIntyre’s mother had chemotherapy, she told him she’d kick his ass if he came home. Wow. This was quite a heartfelt promo from Drew. I think that was helpful in getting him cheered more on Saturday. The pivoting that they had to do between Lashley’s title win and now is a bit sad, if I’m being honest. I’ve talked before that Lashley was most definitely a babyface that night, and because they want Drew to get cheered, they had to rip apart everything that was good about The Hurt Business to ensure the crowd boos him at WrestleMania. First Lashley was pretty much babyface with MVP and Cedric and Shelton by his side as tag champions. A week later, tag champions no more, and dissension. Dissension led to break -up, and the former members getting singles matches with Lashley. Then, he needed help while saying he didn’t need help. It’s been a rocky road, and not the good kind. Corbin... well let’s just say Corbin is just a decent talker. Dude’s good in the ring, and I’ve never taken that away from him. So Corbin and McIntyre fought in the main event of the show, and Corbin hit a really nice superplex from the top rope for a near fall. The Deep Six also got a near fall. MVP gave Corbin his cane to attack Drew, but Drew ducked it and delivered the Claymore Kick to win. Lashley and Drew did the classic stare down to close the show. The two words I have are the same I used in my opening remarks - boring and underwhelming. The promo at the start of the show was good! Nothing else was a hit with me. Nothing. This match was very long, and I didn’t even pay attention to most of it. We all knew what was happening. Baron Corbin is a good dude in the ring, as I said before. I just don’t care about any of this. Twenty minutes? Twenty? All this accomplished was wasting time. I want to be more excited for this, but I’m just not. And that’s mainly because I’d rather have Lashley retain, and I’m sure he won’t. The booking getting muddied after his title win just made this whole thing feel underwhelming. Drew is a great guy and his coronation last year got ruined, and I do genuinely feel bad for him. But it’s really Bobby Lashley’s time now. All aboard Braun Strowman said he’s had to deal with people bullying him his entire life over their perception of who he is. What Shane McMahon doesn’t understand, is that he can run his mouth all he wants, but at WrestleMania he’s fighting for everybody that’s ever been told they’re not good enough. McMahon came out and asked Strowman and applauded him for the idea of a steel cage match. On paper this match favors Strowman, but a McMahon can always one up and outwit someone like him. Yeah so... who gives a shit? Braun Strowman was bullying Adam Pearce just months ago, and now Braun Strowman is fighting for those who have been bullied and called stupid? Remember when Braun literally shoved Adam down for saying words he misunderstood? Does WWE even remember that? This all began because Shane told Braun he couldn’t be in the Elimination Chamber. Suddenly Braun felt like the McMahon kid had something against him. And then the McMahon kid called him stupid. Miraculously that made Braun the babyface here. What a weird way to present Braun, but then again, I’m not surprised by anything anymore. Braun was ready in 2017 during his feud with Roman Reigns. He was gifted a Universal title win last year. So Braun had a match with Elias and Jaxson Ryker after that. All it served was to wear Braun down so that Shane would be able to slide in and get an easy victory at WrestleMania. It didn’t work. Strowman won easily. This was supposed to get me hyped for WrestleMania. The Rest Did they co-exist?!? (Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler defeated Asuka and Rhea Ripley) They immediately started the match not co-existing. Ripley let Asuka take Baszler on until she felt like tagging in. Then she got in the ring with Jax and immediately tagged out. After a facebuster to Jax, Asuka tagged Ripley back in. At this point we got the classic Reginald part of every women’s match and Baszler took advantage to take her knee out, while Jax pushed Ripley into the apron. Baszler stomped on her ankle and Ripley sold that well. The heels isolated her in their corner. Asuka then decided to hesitate tagging in, but did and German suplexed Baszler for a two count. All of a sudden Rhea knocked Asuka off the turnbuckle and tossed her back into the ring for Baszler to pick up the win. They did not co-exist. Shocker. The announcers really were so dumb with this crap. Byron said “Rhea is attacking her tag team partner” and like... yeah no shit Sherlock. None of this was necessary. They really just went into the Sasha/Bianca booking notes and replayed it for us. This was supposed to get me hyped for WrestleMania. Riddle defeated Mustafa Ali Ali and Riddle both had a great sense of urgency. Riddle tried a triangle submission quickly, and Ali had a nasty drop kick to Riddle’s face. Riddle sent Ali flying out of the ring. Riddle got distracted by Sheamus’ hat because... yeah. Riddle got momentum after the break and did some forearms to Ali and hit the Bro-ton. Ali countered a pin and Riddle reversed it. Ali went for the tornado DDT and Riddle countered into the Bro Derek to win. I was kind of hoping Ali would either win or attack after the match to get inserted into the match at WrestleMania, but nope. This match was pretty good. Bobby Lashley defeated Cedric Alexander Shelton Benjamin and Alexander attacked Lashley before the match, but it didn’t do much. Lashley took out Benjamin, and then tossed Alexander all over the place and suplexed him. Lashley sent Alexander into the post and Ced is just great at selling for the big man. Lashley sent Alexander outside the ring like five times throughout this match. Alexander got some momentum and dove outside the ring twice to send Lashley into the barricade. It didn’t have much effect, because Lashley put Cedric in the Hurt Lock and won. It’s really a shame that all of these men were vocal about not wanting to do this, but Vince made them do it anyway. Everyone saw that breaking up this group was a bad idea. Xavier Woods defeated AJ Styles Riddle had himself quite a promo before this match, with loads of references to some recreational activity. Sadly, this promo was about just as long as the match. Kingston threw a microphone at Omos and dove into the ring to get away from him. Styles got flustered from it and Woods rolled him out for the win. There was literally no reason for this. This was supposed to get me hyped for WrestleMania. |
