WWE Summerslam review recap and reactions

ROMAN REIGNS! ROMAN REIGNS!
Okay let me calm down. Let’s talk about the main event.
One year ago, we all saw the Fiend’s first entrance, and it was magical. The ThunderDome made it even more special this time around.
So they did the usual Fiend stuff. He kicked out at 1, he brought back the toolbox (we all remember Hell in a Cell), but Braun had his number mostly at every step. They went back to the Gorilla position and fought, Fiend put Braun through some walls, and still, both were blown up a bit. Braun grabbed a box cutter and exposed the boards under the mat, Fiend hit a couple of Sister Abigails and won back the title. No Alexa Bliss interference, no shenanigans.
And then, he returned. cool
Roman Reigns speared the hell out of the Fiend, speared the hell out of Braun, and said “I made you! You ain’t a monster unless I’m here!” He beat the shit out of Braun with a chair, Rollins style, and speared Fiend again, saying “You’re just a freak in a mask.” I would have advised against that, but semantics.
I wish so badly that this feud was booked better, because the match that they had deserved it. Braun is the beast that could have been the Fiend’s arch nemesis but it got too over the top. With Roman back, I couldn’t tell you where this is going. He attacked both men, and had some much needed and delicious aggression. And muscles. Very sculpted muscles. Quarantine has been kind to Roman Reigns.
I cannot wait for SmackDown.
No RETRIBUTION here.

Never saw it coming
Randy played his expert mind games to try and make Drew slip up. I don’t remember the last time I saw so many RKO attempts at the start of a match.
He started by toying with McIntyre, sliding out of the ring so he could get the smile off the Scotsman’s face. Neither RKO attempts were successful, but McIntyre got some offense in before Orton took control again with multiple table spots. Back in the ring both men attacked each other’s knees and McIntyre hit a beautiful spinebuster.
They wore each other out and Orton hit the DDT setting up the punt, but McIntyre powerbombed him and missed the Claymore Kick and Orton tried an RKO but McIntyre pinned him with a backslide.
No one saw it coming, as the slogan for this year’s show states. That was a weird finish. The punt set up looked a little awkward and the backslide pin just… happened. The story both men were telling was great! The finish didn’t really live up to it. Drew’s whole thing leading up to this was that Randy would see the Claymore coming. Something tells me we’re not done with these two yet.
No RETRIBUTION here, either.

Fake friends
Bayley and Asuka brought the aggression.
She snapped Asuka’s neck over the middle rope, suplexed her, and hit a nasty reverse chinlock. Asuka kicked out of a Bayley-to-Belly and did her wonderful hip attack twice. Bayley responded with a shinbreaker on the apron, and had a cross armbar locked in, when Sasha trash talked her and Asuka kicked her out of the way. Banks got on the apron as Asuka went for another hip attack and Bayley moved out of the way just in time for her bestie to take the move, and schoolboyed Asuka for the win.
I really liked that Sasha didn’t play much of a role during the match. She “took the bullet” to allow Bayley to roll Asuka up, but she by no means helped Bayley. I expected attacks while the ref didn’t see but none of that happened. Both Bayley and Asuka brought their A game and we saw Bayley get her submission on. Asuka is and always will be the best at the hip attacks.
Not sure what the point was of her coming out for her second match as if the first one never happened though. And if you thought Bayley brought the aggression, whew boy did Sasha! Let’s talk about THAT POWERBOMB! OW! My bell would have been ringing right there. Sasha attempted a frog splash but Asuka moved out of the way. Asuka hit a missile dropkick and almost got Sasha, but then the two traded Asuka Locks and Bank Statements in a nice transition. Bayley got up on the apron, and Sasha sidestepped, but Bayley did too. Sasha went for another Bank statement, and Asuka again transitioned into the Asuka Lock and won back the title.
I was 1-2 on my predictions. I thought Asuka would win both titles, not thinking WWE would go back to Sasha being unhinged and jealous of Bayley so quickly. I would have liked to see both women try and win their titles back and make it even more competitive. We know Sasha will be back to side eyeing Bayley and I am eager to see the follow up to this, since Bayley didn’t take one for the team like Sasha did. Maybe Corey Graves was right after all?
No RETRIBUTION here!

Seth Rollins def. Dominik Mysterio - Dominik is a story teller who can execute some decent moves. He had a gutsy performance. He did the moves of both fathers, Rey and Eddie Guerrero. His first frog splash was actually good! And he executed a really nice leg sweep through a table. Throughout this bout, Rey tried to get involved and Dom would tell him no. Seth is the one to introduce weapons, like the bastard he is, and there are some more nasty kendo stick shots between both men.
So Seth brought handcuffs out and decided to handcuff Rey instead. Rey’s wife came out to plead with him and Seth started going up to her and Dom had enough. He threw Murphy over the barricade and Rollins into the steps. The 619 connected and Dom went for another frog splash, but Rollins got his knees up and hit the curb stomp to win.
No RETRIBUTION.

Mandy Rose def. Sonya Deville - I’m not a detractor of Mandy Rose at all, but I have to say I haven’t liked her more than I have in this match. This was the most aggression I’ve seen from her. No DQ stipulation added extra Fire and Desire. I’m sure that enough knees connecting with someone’s face can rock them, but I kind of hoped for a bigger finish. They didn’t utilize the tools as much as I expected for the amount of aggression they showed.
I wish Sonya the best during her time off. I know that she certainly deserves it after her terrifying experience last week. I’m sad that she’ll be gone though. She was a consistent highlight for SmackDown right when the PC era started. Hopefully we get a surprise Royal Rumble return.
No RETRIBUTION.

Street Profits def. Andrade and Angel Garza - The Solo cup pyro was awesome. Get you someone who looks at you the way Zelina did when Garza ripped his pants off. Garza and Andrade worked over Montez and even did that old Del Rio stomp and made it make sense! I forget how great the Street Profits are as a tag team. Montez is the high flying flippy guy and Dawkins is the hot tagging power guy.
Andrade and Zelina don’t have anyone to blame but themselves for this loss. No one turned on anyone here, but I find it hard to believe that it won’t be happening very soon.
And oh yeah, no RETRIBUTION.

SummerSlam was a really good show!
Two quick points to hit before I reveal my grade. One - ThunderDome was much better for the pay-per-view. I felt more engagement from the digital fans, and there was some really nice overhead shots showing the whole production that gave me that “wow this all looks unbelievably expensive” feeling. Two, and I think you know where I’m going if you noticed the trend in my recap - WHERE WAS RETRIBUTION?
How incredibly dumb that the anarchist group did not cause a lick of chaos and terror during the largest opportunity to do so in their short existence? They were mentioned multiple times, even given a video package, and were nowhere to be found. I mean come on. No cinderblocks through one window, no overturned car, no spray paint or chainsaws? Nothing? Stupid.

It was after I got into comics that I figured Sandman and Lucifer where also comic book characters..I don't really read them as much as I'd love to tho but I have a really good idea about them...

I don't think the audible will be in Alaba o grin grin but if you find any free version please let me know, I'm also interested..the voice cast is superb

Thank God I stumbled upon The Sandman panel. I was already getting pissed I didn't hear anything from it and was waiting for it on DC Fandome Day 2 on September 12.

Who know where I can get the The Sandman Audible released last month??
This Netflix series gonna be lit... At least they'll do Lucifer a solid and portray him accurately or close to comics... Although I still enjoy the Lucifer Series, started watching season 5 yesterday evening but DC Fandome is too big to ignore. grin
They said it's going to be a loose adaptation...I didn't catch the release date tho...

Don't know now tho with the current push to align all comics in one single THREAD. But man Geoff Johns really had immense influence in the comics department man— Chai so dude was the Writer for recently Cancelled Hawkman And some many more.

Many people have been heaping praise on his iteration of Hawkman.. might check it out when I'm through with Doomsday Clock.
I think it's the best version of Hawkman I've ever read...but it wasn't John that wrote it

Lodi?? Attack wise, average...Defensively, i don't know, cos the way ATM team is shaped, you can't really know who's good and who's not...kinda slow also (sandro 2.0)
Mendy is the 2nd fastest player in the team behind Valverde and ahead if Vinicius...that's not slow

we need to sell players but letting Ceballos go isn't it at all shocked. Likely Ceballos doesn't want to return?

Madrid don't want to completely lose Reguilon considering Marcelo is ageing and also dont want to stale his growth especially with the way Mandy has performed last season. I doubt Reguilon will be in the squad except we want to take a risk by booting Marcelo out
so is there an official decision on him yet? Or is it still all these confused indecision

WWE NXT Takeover Bleep REVIEWS RECAPS AND REACTIONS

Fall and Pray
Prepare for a different NXT.
After only six weeks of holding the title, Keith Lee lost the gold to Karrion Kross. This will usher in a new era of NXT with probably the most sinister villain they’ve had sitting on top of the promotion.
That’s not a bad thing at all. NXT’s style has been focused around chasing the villain for awhile now. Tommaso Ciampa was the big bad for a long time. Johnny Gargano held it briefly. Adam Cole was the champion for a long time. Keith Lee held it briefly.
It’s a style of booking focused around the chase over long standing babyfaces. And it’s a style I certainly don’t mind.
The match itself was overall enjoyable. Karrion Kross doesn’t work the NXT style so at times it felt more plodding, but as someone who thinks the NXT style is sometimes too over the top, I appreciated this.
Lee’s aggression early, maybe letting his emotions get the best of him, gave Kross a chance to trap Keith’s arm between the plexiglass and guardrail and crush it. Then the challenger spent the rest of the match trying to wear down that limb. Lee would fight back plenty of times, but Karrion continued to work the arm and retake the advantage.
The fight eventually led to a superb moment where the challenger hooked Lee into the Kross Jacket where it looked like it was a no doubter Lee was going to pass out. They hooked me into thinking it would be the finish but dammit the big man would not let his arm hit the mat and struggled to the ropes to break the hold.
This led to a final sequence where it looked like Keith Lee would be the first man to survive the dastardly Kross. But when fighting on the middle rope, Karrion delivered his second Doomsday Saito (Lee kicked out of the first) for the win.
Maybe the match could have been a bit shorter but it accomplished what it set out to do. It gave us a hoss fight where the hero continued to survive multiple onslaughts by the villain until he just couldn’t any more.
Now we wait and see what an NXT helmed by Karrion Kross looks like. Hopefully, the injury news I heard that Kross suffered isn't serious

Exceeding Expectations
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen someone step into the world of pro wrestling from a different walk of life and excel like Pat McAfee did.
Coming into this show, we knew he had the character and talking skills down. But in ring was going to be a totally different story... right? Not really.
Pat McAfee looked great out there against Cole. Yes, they booked the match to make sure he could do all they asked. But that involved top rope sentons onto the floor, back flips off the top rope landing on his feet, and single leaps on to the top turnbuckle.
And while he was doing all that, he was playing up his character. He wasn’t stopping to think. He kept his brash personality the entire time. Just like a professional wrestler should.
Can you argue that Cole sold too much for him? Sure. But given Pat has an athletic background, a size advantage, and cheated when he could, it wasn’t anything that will hurt the Panama City Playboy. Plus, Pat was impressive enough that I would have been disappointed with a short match. Sacrificing the former champ selling a little more than maybe he should have to get to see someone come in like a natural was worth it.
There was no angle coming out of this like some, including myself, had predicted. But it was a really fun bout that well exceeded expectations.

A Strong Duo... but Not Strong Enough
Io Shirai successfully defended her title against a game Dakota Kai.
NXT made sure to put over the team of Kai and Raquel González throughout this bout. Raquel’s fingerprints were all over that match, even if most of the time, she was watching from ringside.
Early in the match, Shirai tried to chase Dakota outside the ring but was stopped by the wall that is González. This allowed Kai to sneak up behind the champ and run her shoulder first into the ring post. (My only gripe with this angle is the back to back working of the arms between the two title matches.)
From that point on, the challenger targeted that injured arm, making the most of what Raquel had given her.
The impact got more blatant later when the referee went down to an inadvertent kick from Dakota, allowing González to get in the ring and chokeslam the champ.
But all of that, and a generally strong effort from the Kiwi, was not enough to put the champion away. Shirai won with her moonsault.
That was never really in doubt. The question was always going to be how good would Dakota look in the losing effort? And she looked pretty good now that she had Raquel back on her side. Though the post match angle has to make us wonder whether or not González will be doing her own thing sooner than later.
Kai’s heavy attacked the champ from behind while she was celebrating. This act brought Rhea Ripley to the ring for a big time stare down between Rhea & Raquel. That hints that González is going to see the spotlight more, though Rhea has a future date with Mercedes Martinez as well.

A Blast of Chaos
The ladder match for the vacant North American title was an absolute blast.
It’s tough to write reactions for matches like these because there’s just so many crazy spots and fun moments that it’s not easy to remember them all. But here are just a few things I liked enough to remember amongst all the other stuff I liked but don’t specifically remember;
-Candice LeRae getting involved on Johnny Wrestling’s behalf, even straight up costing Cameron Grimes, was really fun. It culminated in a spot where she jumped on the back of Bronson Reed on the top of the ladder so Thicc Boi jumped off the ladder onto Gargano with LeRae on his back. Serves them right.
-Velveteen Dream had a moment where he climbed one of two ladders set up to deliver an elbow drop, but when doing his pose, he knocked the title aside and realized “Oh shit, I should just try to win this match.” Unfortunately, hitting the title sent it swinging and he couldn’t grab it. I appreciate the realization “Oh maybe I shouldn’t do this move and instead try to win a championship.”
-Dream was done in by Big Thicc later when he was on the top of a ladder that was picked up by Reed, catapulting him over the barricade onto a table. That was it for Velveteen.
-The final moment when Damian Priest and Johnny Gargano were on the top battling for the title was well done. Johnny unhooked the title but Priest grabbed it from the top and Gargano couldn’t hang on. It was a clever moment with Damian realizing even though Johnny unhooked the strap, he still had time to grab it.
One thing this match did well was make you think anyone could win. There were plenty of moments I thought, “It may be over here” and then a crazy, and often creative, save kept it going.
Priest was a fine choice to win this. I felt he was the obvious one, but that’s not bad. Who knows? Maybe we’ll get another Bálor vs. Priest match down the road since Finn expressed really wanting that title and has a win over the man who’s champ. But that’s for another day.
Right now, this match, and the build prior, did a great job elevating guys like Reed, Grimes, and Priest to bolster the midcard.

Still Rolling
Finn Bálor and Timothy Thatcher were tasked with opening show
They put together a strong match based around Thatcher using his mastery of submissions and Bálor trying to stay ahead of him. Tim’s style is unique within the world of WWE/NXT so his matches are always a treat. Variety is the spice of life... and wrestling.
Plus, with his different style, they can build him as a master technician. There was one moment that really put that over. Finn Bálor missed his coup de grace, coming up lame. Thatcher noticed that his opponent had a bum leg and his eyes widened like a wolf eyeing an injured deer. And Bálor realized that he was in big trouble and scrambled just to survive from a man turned predator. It was a moment that really sold how dangerous Thatcher is.
In the end, Bálor did survive, winning with 1916. This isn’t too surprising. Finn has only lost one singles match since returning. He’s very protected and they likely want to keep that going for an eventual title feud. Thatcher will not be hurt from this loss.
Top to bottom this was a good show with few gripes to be had. It had a good flow, with different styles of matches throughout so it never felt homogenous.

The announce team was different. Corey Graves worked the show. Mauro Ranallo didn’t. That was a shame. Mauro is the voice of the brand and any show he’s not on doesn’t feel as much like you’re watching NXT. If they brought back Corey because he called so many TakeOvers in some of their glory days, I’d say bring back Tom Phillips too. He’s not my cup of tea on Raw, but that was the classic booth for a long time.

That aside, this was a fun show.
