PoliticsNorthern Elders Or Northern JOKERS by Punchie(op): 2:48pm On Aug 13, 2014
All peace- loving, decent- minded and God- fearing individuals and groups within and outside Nigeria had recently agreed that this intractable problem of insecurity should not be joined with politics. It was a gentleman agreement and a consensus by all stakeholders that since these murderers had upped their game to the absurd level of seizing innocent, defenseless and unarmed little girls, it was time for all sane persons across the globe to forget politics and other cleavages and dissipate all their energies and resources in supporting government and the Armed Forces to rid the nation of this scourge.

In these challenging times however, some strange elements will always emerge to seek to truncate a process or be a clog on the wheel of progress. What is normal is that while youths are exhibiting the normal youthful exuberance and saying things that run contrary to commonsense, elders are expected to call them to order and use their benefit of experience, wisdom and knowledge to talk to them. But in this case, a group of senile, jobless and disgruntled elements under the guise of Northern Elders Forum (NEF) have decided to abandon logic and do the needless. Rather than than join hands with other patriots who are assisting security agencies with information and advising government on ways to tackle the problem of insurgency, they are threatening fire and brimstone, hitting the roof and blowing hot air.

The tone of the first paragraphs of this piece stems from the threat and ultimatum issued by the forum on President Goodluck Jonathan to either rescue the missing girls before October or forfeit his right to seek re- election in 2015?

First, it is grossly absurd and treasonable for any group of anarchists to threaten or issue an ultimatum on a democratically elected government.

If I may ask, when did the issue of rescuing the Chibok girls become a political matter? What has it got to do with the constitutional rights of the President to seek re-election?

It is shocking that anybody will tie the safe return of our missing sisters to an election bid that is backed by the constitution? How insensitive can these men be? The way they sound and what I can make out of the statement is not too far from a widely held belief that the security crises we are facing were engineered by some northerners to destabilize parts of the country and tarnish the image of President Goodluck. We can as well recall that some of them threatened to make the country ungovernable if he became President.

If the same northern elders are now issuing another threat about the next election, the belief in some quarters that the whole Chibok affair was acted to blackmail President Jonathan may now begin to make some sense.

Their effort has failed and will continue to fail because even the blind can see through this and the deaf can hear the re-echoing sounds of the stomping feet of our military with the support of Mr President as they regain control of the North.

They will continue to fail because we all know that the views expressed by those few confused men do not represent the views of the majority of the talakawas in the north who know what the present administration has done for the region in terms of infrastructure (roads, bridges ), education (Almajiri schools, new federal universities) etc.

They will keep failing because despite their rantings that they would stop Jonathan from becoming President in 2011, the man got a considerably huge support in the north and since it was God’s plans for him, he was sworn in as President. They failed in 2011, they will also fail this time.

They will keep failing because we know the charlatans behind the NEF group are just attention- seeking people who want the President to notice them at all cost. These are people who have lived all their lives serving their pockets and forgetting to serve the society they represent. These are people who have held several positions in government with a lot to show in terms of the number of properties they acquired all over the world but with nothing to show in terms of what they contributed to the development of the same northern Nigeria they now claim to represent. And now that the President is gradually taking away the innocent, poor kids they abandoned on the streets and building proper western cum Islamic schools for them, they are saying he should not seek re- election. Even if Jonathan quits power today, do these empty people have anything to offer the north in terms of developmental programmes. No, they don’t, we have tested them in the past and they have failed.

Time has come for northern youths to issue an ultimatum on the NEF group and other misguided elements asking them to tell the world what they have done for the north and the future generation. They should say this within a week or consider keeping quiet for life.

The second part of the ultimatum should mandate the NEF group and its co- travelers to begin to assist the Federal Government in the efforts to rescue the missing Chibok girls and end insurgency. They should tell us what they know about the ongoing insurgency and the whereabouts of the missing girls or face the wrath of the people.

It is not my wish to castigate elders in this manner but if a snake refuses to behave like one, children will mistake it for a rope and attempt to use it to tie firewood. These NEF people have sown the wind, they will soon reap the whirlwind. Northern youths and the talakawas who have been at the receiving end of their sins will soon go for their jugular.

PoliticsIs There A Nigerian Identity? What Is It? by Punchie(op): 12:23pm On Aug 05, 2014
As i ponder on why i am here and what this is intended to achieve, i believe lots of people who leave in the this geographical space called Nigeria ask themselves this same question. Is there a Nigerian identity? if yes what is it , has it been abused or misrepresented and can it be corrected.]
If No? then what should it really be and how can we build this identity to reflect us.

Because in my own opinion the identity crisis problem which i think we face is one we have to deal with in other to make progress as, so gentlemen and ladies lets share our thoughts with passion because this space we call Nigeria can be home for us all.
