This is in response to this thread about Tinubu’s achievement in Lagos. https://www.nairaland.com/7313703/asiwaju-tinubus-greatest-achievement-lagos And I am not here to engage in campaign of calumny but an issue based conversation. I just have very simple questions for Tinubu’s proponents on that thread. Let’s imagine for a second that Tinubu truly raised IGR for successive governors to use, are we then to expect him to only generate IGR in his 8 years as president with not much to show for it, hoping that only successive presidents will be the one to utilize it in the grand way Fashola and Ambode did? Or why did he not commission those laudable projects of his successors while he was in office? It also begs for the question where did he spend all that IGR in his own tenure that can be pointed out vividly like the OP did for his successors on that thread? Because we need to properly engage these candidates and their proponents for the electorate to make a well informed decision in 2023 hopefully. Just simple plain responses please. Thanks

Indeed, when it comes to campus beauty and serenity in Nigeria, a magnificent West African estate, the OAU, comfortable sits on top. With a perfect blend of inspiring architecture and nature, the university is overlooked by a touristic mountain from where the Nigerian academic giant can be viewed in a glance. The planning of the school is such that there are special designated areas for academics, hostels, sports, banking, markets, staff quarters, a university farm etc. Rumor has it that this citadel of learning is well on its way (if it already hasn't) to generate her own independent power supply that will help boost adequate research activities. This is expected to translate into better global ranking for the university in the coming years. The University, which also has produced numerous notable alumni including the current president of the African Development Bank, Akinwunmi Adesina, is perhaps the only one such in the country where some form of space research takes place. These are some random aerial and other pictures from "Great Ife" as it is fondly called.

The greatest undoing of this thread is to drag the west into it. |

Ancient city ibadan

Sweetguy25:beauty is another argument, I'll leave that. I quoted that Abuja has a better plan and I insist on that. |
Kenyanstar:Carry your miserable self off my mention if you can't quote without insults. I have stayed in both cities. Nairobi had existed long before Abuja and the later is just as planned as it is recent. Indeed, Abuja main city is one of the few African cities with a comprehensive plan that has largely been adhered to. |
NairobiWalker:It's only in your dreams that Nairobi would be better planned than Abuja. |
I still see no argument in this. Having checked through the thread, it's so obvious Kenya has about 3 major cities. Nigeria has more than 10. Imagine you combine the infrastructure in all the cities for each country, then you can have a clearer picture of the argument. Nigeria will always be ahead of Kenya. It's just the truth. |
More like thread for witches and wizards. Runs outta tgread* |
Flexygist:You are nothing but a hungry blogger. That obviously isn't Ibadan. Continue this way and your relevance will not surpass nairaland. |
seanwilliam:Lol nah. But I partly grew up there. And I still spend a huge part of my time there. It's a very likeable city. You? |
seanwilliam:Nah. Beat fm actually owns naija fm. I wasn't arguing, and I'm still not. Just saying my experience based on the frequency of public listenership from fueling stations to large stores etc. |
seanwilliam:That's in your own view. For me, I'd say naija fm is the best new station. And beat fm, which rivals splash fm on fan base, is the best urban station. |
TonyeBarcanista:I acknowledge your points. But I see you are shifting towards sociopolitical issues. Even though those issues cannot be completely ruled out of national development, the point I sought to address in the first place is our level of (tangible/material) development presently in comparison to Kenya. And even in Nigeria's current economic recession which by the way is temporary, that level of development is still (in absolute terms) better than Kenya. |
TonyeBarcanista:Please stop talking as though everything just suddenly got to how it is. Growth takes time. And America didn't suddenly appear in their present timeline. Do I need to start explaining to you why population matters in things like this and how it will take time for the effect of population to be masked by the prosperity of a nation, just as is the case of America today? Does that mean America didn't get to a point where they were better in absolute terms but lagged on the average behind Great Britain? Stop being too emotional about this and reason objectively. |
MduZA:Lmao. Answer this yourself. How more biased could you be with this picture post? |
Your opinion Mr. You are entitled to it. Economy in general; ICT, Trade and Commerce, Nollywood Showbiz Entertainment and related services (clubs), Hospitality (hotels and restaurants), Banking and Insurance, Mass media, Real Estate, are areas where Nigeria is doing far better than Kenya in absolute terms. The statistics you quoted all have to do with average and even when Nigeria becomes much better, we will continue to be lagging in those aspects for many years to come simply because of our population. Doesn't necessarily mean we are not better. We however still have a long way to go in relation to where we could possibly be. And trust me, that "where" should scare(not in a bad way) the hell out of other African countries. PS : Did you know even with our "low" manufacturing output, Nigeria still has the third highest in Africa only rivaled by SA and Egypt? |
Truth234:You didn't quote well. I didn't see the part you quoted so you should edit. Yes if it's just that part, it's true. I made that statement to state what we always knew before Einstein revolutionalized the thinking. Of course, all of Einsteins work were not purely his works, he simply built on the ideas of past scientists like Newton and Galileo. Isn't that what science is about? |
Truth234:There is a difference. Galileo Galilee could not explain why all these phenomena are true. Einstein provided the ground breaking explanation to all the occurrences I mentioned. So it's safe to say it's Einsteins understanding of the concepts that revolutionalized our knowledge of the universe as we know it today. |
Einstein of course Some people have given the reasons above by stating some of his achievements but let me simplify it as much as I can for non-science people. Imagine being told that "time" as you know it is not constant but two different people will read different times on their clocks if they are both moving at different speeds that is large enough. That time will also be slower for those of us that are on ground than those that are flying in an airplane for the same event. (gravitational time dilation). In other words, if your twin brother left the ground and was living far above on mountain everest (if it were possible), after so many years, he would have been older than you even if both of you time yourselves with the same accurate clock (say an atomic clock). The application of these concepts is what makes it possible for your GPS to tell you what exact position that you are on earth accurately. Another thing that may sound strange to you; When you drop a stone from a height, especially where there is no air to push against it as it falls, ordinarily you would expect the stone's speed to keep increasing until it hits the ground right? Well, that's not true. In fact, right from the moment it started dropping, its speed remains the same! And it never changes throughout it's fall. You only think it's increasing because it's you who is actually "moving" relative to the stone. Any object moving in space ordinarily does so at a uniform speed including your stone. We always assumed that the earth has a force from within it that pulls us to herself and therefore makes our speed increase with time (acceleration by Newton's Idea), but it's not true. There is no force from within the earth. That's why when you fall freely in a lift for instance, you feel as if you have no weight, as if there is no force whatsoever acting on you. Because there is actually none. Now the reason might get a little confusing. Space and time bends around a massive object like the earth, so although your falling stone covers an equal distance in every second( constant speed) in the real sense, to you it's speed is increasing because you are judging it based on a curved/bent space and time. These ideas have helped us understand better the nature of our universe, where it started from (big bang), where it will possibly lead to, the application of space technology in forecasting disease outbreaks on a farm, disaster management, solid mineral exploration, defence and security, weather forecast, even in public health as well as GIS/GPS. Einsteins works are evolutionary! |
