Health / The 50-year-old Pastor With Prostate Cancer by qpressng(f): 6:27am On Sep 04, 2019
So, this handsome middle-aged man (50) walked into my consulting room complaining of low back pain.

A focused history, examination and some targeted investigations suggested the unexpected.

I explained my presumptive diagnosis to him which he rejected "in Jesus name" as "cancer is not my portion".

I booked him for prostate biopsy to confirm my suspicion.

The procedure was smooth and uneventful.
He prayed and fasted while waiting for good histology report.

10 days later, his "whole world came crashing down".

The histology report showed her has Prostate Cancer!

After the whys, hows and why mes, we say down to discuss the way forward.

He is much better now and the cancer seems to be in remission.

This is actually a sad story with a happy ending.

A lot of men in similar show will persist in denial only to present much later with inability to walk, weakness, shortage of blood (anaemia) and sometimes, inability to hold urine or faeces.

I decided to share this story to show that prostate cancer is not just an exclusive preserve of elderly men. Men in their 50s sometimes come down with prostate cancer.

The earlier you recognise these early symptoms and start treatment, the better the outcome is likely to be.

Here are the early symptoms of prostate cancer every man should be aware of, and what to do to reduce your risk of prostate cancer:

Health / 6 Simple Ways To Prevent High Blood Pressure. by qpressng(f): 7:22am On Aug 22, 2019
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

You’ve probably heard this question before in a philosophy or physics class.
But what does it have to do with your health?

Try this: *If I have high blood pressure and I don’t see any symptoms, do I still have the disease?*

The answer is yes.

High blood pressure, a disease impacting nearly one in every three adults, is called the “silent killer” because it often shows no signs or symptoms.

Checking your blood pressure at regular intervals, and more importantly, learning to prevent it will help you prevent untimely death.

These are 6 simple ways to prevent high blood pressure. Read and share widely, this may save someone's life:

Politics / Jimi Agbaje Vs. Bode George: The Dirty Battle For The Soul Of Lagos PDP by qpressng(f): 7:22am On Jun 07, 2019
Jimi Agbaje: People should please tell Bode George to shut up and leave PDP if he lacks any value to add to the party, instead of being a dog in the manger hampering the progress of the party in Lagos State.

“That false narrative is the product of a sick mind. Or how else do you describe someone who just sits down to concoct fiction and markets it as reality? He should tell the world where he got the news being spreading round.

“These shameless party leaders have 2023 in mind. The game-plan is mischievously simple: Give the dog a bad name and chase it away from the party.

“By 2023, this mudslinging will have scared off credible people from the party, which will leave the whole field to them to continue to corner party resources.”

Bode George: “We have read with disgust an absolute report of idiocy that emanated from one Mr. Jimi Agbaje, who was a failed governorship candidate of the PDP in last general election in Lagos State, against the leader of the party in the state, Chief George.

“For the records, it is a public knowledge that Chief Bode George gave Agbaje his break in politics; he gave him the PDP platform without knowing him and also empowered him. It is sad and shameful that Agbaje has bitten the hand that feeds him.

“Whether he has gone to APC or wherever it is none of our business. We don’t know where he concocted this malady about Bode George saying that he has gone to APC.

“Bode George lifted him up in 2015 without knowing him; he secured the party’s ticket but his heart is not with the PDP.”

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Doctor Killed His Patient Out Of Frustration by qpressng(f): 11:00pm On Mar 28, 2019
NIGERIAN DOCTOR KILLED HIS PATIENT OUT OF FRUSTRATION THAT HE WAS NOT RESPONDING TO TREATMENT

I am not the father of this patient, but as an activist, I will always demand for justice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

A Nigerian doctor, doctor A.K.Z (initials used intentionally) has been attending to a particular sick patient for about a week now. Dr A.K.Z is a graduate of one of the first generation universities in Nigeria and was the best graduating doctor in his set.

He is into private practice and is reknowned for hard work and success in his work. He however has a 7week-old patient who is said to be having nasal discharge and passing reddish stool for some days now. He has given several medications but with no response.

Out of annoyance he took the life of the patient yesterday. Everybody was surprised at his action. However, a reliable source had it that it was due to some "pressure".

Dr A.K.Z is veterinarian and his patient is a seven-week old broiler who was not responding to treatment. So he slaughtered the chicken and used it to do pepper soup.

Foreign Affairs / From President To Pauper: The Story Of The Youngest President Ever In Africa by qpressng(f): 1:33am On Mar 28, 2019
In 1992 at just age 25, Captain Valentine Strasser had seized power from His former boss President Joseph Momoh and had become Sierra Leone’s Head of State making him the youngest ever in West Africa.

Strasser sat on wealth and many opportunities but he soon allowed his youthful exuberance to be his waterloo.

He engaged in high level of profligacy and failed the war against rebel leader Forday Sankoh.

He grew unpopular with accusations of mismanagement and ordering the killing of many of dissenters of his regime.

Majority of his soldiers defected to the rebel army after he employed the services of mercenary front Executive Outcomes.

Strasser was ousted in 1996 through a palace coup staged by his deputy Julius Maabo who assumed his position afterwards.

Strasser fled to London and attempted studying law at Warwick University on scholarship. He couldn’t feed nor afford decent accommodation.

Hardship, coupled with divorce and constant harassment from a daughter of one of his victims soon forced him to abandon the school.

He was granted amnesty and returned to Sierra Leone where he’s been living with his mum and struggling so hard to make ends meet.

He laments over his joblessness and takes solace in the Palm wine bars.

Nairaland / General / Meet Charles Okeke, The Nigerian Man Who Survived For Two Years Without A Heart by qpressng(f): 7:02am On Aug 30, 2015
“You can feel it,” Charles Okeke says. “It’s pounding. If I opened my mouth, it was very audible.”

Okeke is remembering the days when his blood was pumped by a massive 400-pound machine. It was one stage in a remarkable journey that has finally brought him where he is today — a healthy man with a healthy heart once again beating in his chest.

The heart Okeke was born with failed when he was just 30 years old, from a condition called cardiomyopathy. Okeke received a transplanted heart; but transplanted organs have a life span, and a decade later that heart failed as well.

Okeke was still a young man, but he could not have another transplant. His doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona said his immune system was too “revved up” and would destroy a second transplant.

“Charles was very sick when he showed up at our hospital,” remembers Eric Steidley, MD, a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic. “Charles was going to die unless we did something.”

What they did was remove his failing heart and implant an artificial heart. A human heart is a muscle that powers itself, but the artificial heart needed an outside driver. Okeke was continually tethered to a 400-pound rolling motor. Since the machine could not leave the hospital, neither could Okeke.

No one was sure how long it would take for Okeke’s immune system to calm down enough for him to receive a transplant. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months. “You have to have a strategy,” Okeke says. “It’s a long day.”

After two years, Okeke was still not ready for a new transplant, but technology had improved. He was able to trade in the 400-pound driver for a 13-pound version he could carry in a backpack. Okeke made national news when he left the hospital, the first person to go home with an entirely artificial heart.

The patience of Okeke and his doctors paid off. Seven months later, Okeke received a second transplanted heart, and his body did not reject it. “I feel like I’m the most blessed person on earth,” he says.

And Okeke says those years spent tethered to a machine were not wasted. “The great thing I have learned in all of this, how my life has changed, is that I think I know how to simplify my life,” he says. “Life to me is really simple. Life is about service. That’s it.”

Health / The Health Implications Of Prolonged ASUU Strike by qpressng(f): 3:39pm On Dec 07, 2013
A lot has been said about the implications of the prolonged ASUU strike to the Nigerian economy and the quality of the graduates produced by Nigerian universities. However, there are more important reasons to be worried - and that is the consequences of the strike on the health of both the students and lecturers.
These health implications include:
1. Sedentary lifestyle and all the diseases associate with it.
2. All forms of addictions including social media addiction
3. Alzheimer's disease which is one of the commonest form of memory loss.
4. Road traffic accidents
5. Injuries from all forms of menial jobs.
6. Eye problems from using computers and smart gadgets for more than necessary
7. Unwanted pregnancies and all the complications associated with it.
8. Sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS
9. Depression from spending too many years in school and form heart breaks.
10. Inability of ASUU members to afford medical services especially with the implementation of the no-work-no-pay policy of the federal government.

All these are grave enough to be a serious cause for concern. So, when next you are talking about the consequences of the prolonged ASUU strike on the lecturers and students, you should remember to mention the health implications of the strike on the stake holders too.

Business / Nigerian Youth Selling Their Kidneys In Asia For $30,000 by qpressng(f): 2:19am On May 11, 2013
With the worsening economic and resultant unemployment situation in the country, Nigerian youths have always been known to always come up with interesting solutions.

However, one of the not so interesting businesses currently being ventured into is that a lot of young men and women are now trooping out in droves to asia (india, china, singapore, bangladesh) etc to sell one of their kidneys.

The business is said to be very lucrative as one kidney goes for about $30,000 (about 4.5 million naira).

The story of a 27 year old lady (student) who presented at a private hospital in lagos was particularly saddening as she was dupped by her "boyfriend" that took her to india for the "business" on their arrival to Nigeria.

About a month later, she became very sick, and series of tests done showed that her kidney was not functioning properly and that she will require regular dialysis (3 times a week) or a kidney transplant ASAP.

Of course, she was broke and even buying common drugs was not easy. Things got very bad, and she died.

A sad end to the life of a promising young woman courtesy of -

a). Greed
b). Poverty
c). Nigerian economy
d). Foolishness
e). All of the above
f). None of the above

Health / How To Prevent Breast Cancer by qpressng(f): 2:27pm On May 03, 2013
I came across this picture and I think it'll be a nice addition to the continuous fight against breast cancer. I am a doctor and everyday, I see women, young and old, come down with this deadly disease.
Social status may play a role in management but it does affect the risk. Infact a deputy governor in Nigeria died from complications arising from breast cancer - she might had the best of available medicine but that does not totally eliminate the eventualities.
Everyday, I silently wish I will wake up to learn that breast cancer, and other forms of cancer, are just a bad dream.... But of course, I know it's not.
However, it's gladening that breast cancer is preventable to a large extent but it's also saddening that a lot of women are either not aware of how to go about it or thinks its too much work.
Saving your own life should not be too much work for you or anybody at that, life is hard - girls are frowning and boys are not smilling - yet there is a reason to stay alive and healthy.

Family / Re: Tired: Need Advise by qpressng(f): 8:21am On Sep 23, 2011
Maybe it's not his fault afterall, men are enticed to what make them happy and task their brain. That you guys are married is not an excuse for not trying to make him fall in love again.
I just feel that you may presently not be working hard enough to seduce him back to you.
Women seem to get complacent once they got married and in a very subtle way, some men gradually but surely revolt against this and anything could be employed to fill the void - beer, adultery, gambling, work, all sorts.
The earlier you get back to work the better for your relationship.
A word is enough for the wise.

Nairaland / General / Ogun State: The Gateway To Ritual Politics by qpressng(f): 10:00am On Jul 04, 2009

The way things are in Ogun state calls for serious concern. The mud-slinging and media war over the oath saga is one thing that will not only drag the name of the state in the mud but also ridicle the re-branding project the federal government.
The federal government should call the chief priest (the governor) and his followers to order before they destroy what some people labour to build.
This is a pointer to the chronic poverty that has destroyed all sense of morality in the people we call our leaders.
May God save us from these ritualists in politician clothing.
Nairaland / General / QPRESS NG thoughts on Nigeria: Nigerian Development Is A Responsibility For All. by qpressng(f): 6:38am On Jul 01, 2009
Everywhere we go and in a lot of countries of the world, we see things we really cherish. Things as common and as mundane as clean streets, prompt and reliable services from private and government establishments, and we wonder what these people are doing right or what we are doing wrong.
Just about two months ago, a lecturer in my school told my class that when he got back from his leave in the US he felt that Nigeria is not a place for normal human beings, "pigs, chickens and other animals can survive here but not human".
While he can point accussing finger at some people or blame the government, because he has experienced what it is Nigeria really lack, who speaks for folks in rural areas who don't even know that they are Nigerians. They have no functional social ammenities and all they could hope for is to get enough to eat on a daily basis while their miserable lives last.
This is a country where some policians believe that all that it is to government is some cheap propaganda that drives electorates to the poles and force citizens to pay their taxes.
While a lot of people may be contemplating seeking a greener pasture somewhere else, what happen to my folks who dont even know such places exist for real. All it is to them is a fable land across the seas, everybody talks about it but nobody has ever been there.
It's time to start thinking of what we can do for ourselves.
Nigeria need the contributions of all and it will be a great let-down to the God that created us here for her.
It's time for everyone of us to think of what we can do to make Nigeria great.
May God bless us all!
May God bless Nigeria!

I am a Nigerian by Choice, are you?
