Twenty-four years ago today, Bola Ahmed Tinubu would stand in Isolo, Oshodi LGA, to lead his campaign for Governor of Lagos State. Standing before over 20,000 people at the former federal capital where he once served as Senator, Tinubu reeled out his plans for the 1999 elections, the problems he wanted to solve in office, and his vision for Lagos state.
“I have come to change the story,” he said. “We will develop education, health, security, and empower youths and women to make Lagos work for all."
Over the next five months, almost one million people would sign up to vote for Tinubu for a better Lagos. Working together, traders, community leaders, commercial riders, and civil servants built a strong network that stretched across all the LGAs and ultimately led to Bola Tinubu – a returning NADECO chieftain from exile – being elected governor with the most votes ever given any candidate in Lagos history. It was the beginning of a history that #MyAsiwajuStory now tells of Tinubu and Lagos—and the one that continues to spur meaningful conversations as Nigeria heads to the 2023 polls.
Why is it so?
As greatly as his tenure was judged, what has been even more impressive was what followed. Many former cabinet members, colleagues, students, young people, traders and the less privileged who were impacted positively by his government have been giving testimonies. They went on to serve in government, or float businesses, founded non-profits, joined the private sector, or found ways to serve their community. Many still draw inspiration from their experiences as a testament to what we can accomplish when we’re willing to elect credible and competent leaders.
Clearly, this would be the difference in a chaotic campaign. Testimonies like #MyAsiwajuStory are what this nation needs now--and the reason he could be chosen. The interrogation of the capacity, ability, and credibility of those angling to take the baton of leadership, in line with their achievements, in the offices held previously. Out of the three major candidates, it would appear only Tinubu has such a record to show or people to bear witnesses, and it is commendable.
Less than 20 years later, Atiku Abubakar, flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), continues to struggle to own up to his little or no impact in the Olusegun Obasanjo-led government as Vice-President. Aside from run-off-the-mill press statements of promises, there is no documentary or credible literature to assess his economic plans and leadership abilities. It may account for why, after six trials, Nigerians would not trust him to be their president.
With all the momentum he enjoys, Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has a lot to do to shed an image of a man who talks about all the problems of the country but solutions he designed even as a governor in Anambra state, to merit a higher office. Aside from all the worries over the provincial nature of his ambition at a time the nation needs peace, many temperate analysts and fact-checkers continue to highlight Obi's propensity for cooking data and figures at public outings as off-putting.
It is in the midst of this that Nigerians from all parts of the country are calling on their counterparts to “to let Tinubu take on the unfinished business of fixing our union. He has done it before, he can do it again.”
Tagged #MyAsiwajuStory, a collection of stories by people impacted by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the series bears the imprint of the legacies of a servant-leader and trusts in his prowess to turn around Nigeria for good.
Ebuka Anisiobi hailed from Anambra State, South Eastern region of Nigeria, but grew up on the streets of Lagos, Maryland, in Kosofe LGA where his parents had sought greener pastures.
Despite being a 'non-indigene,' he became the first ever one-day governor and the youngest in Nigeria after winning a spelling bee competition organised by the former governor's wife Senator Oluremi Tinubu for secondary school students in 2001.
"Despite my ethnicity and religion, Asiwaju and Senator Remi Tinubu gave me the chance at education and leadership through the spelling bee competition and One-Day Governor initiative," Ebuka said in a sensational video account on social media in August.
"After winning the One-Day Governor Program, I got a scholarship for further education. The Lagos State Government also paid for all the WAEC fees of all students that year and subsequently, and that gave me the opportunity for quality education.
"Today, I have worked in various organisations in the oil and gas industry, and consulting industry, and I am also an entrepreneur. I owe all this to the belief that was placed in me singularly on that fateful day in June 2001."
It would be discovered that the One-Day Governor initiative was introduced by the Asiwaju Bola Tinubu-led administration to reward academic excellence and foster social inclusion in Lagos State. The initiative has now become a tradition in the state, having been upheld by successive governments in the last 21 years.
Ebuka, the first beneficiary of the scheme, was a Christian and South Easterner.
In 2002, Brig. Gen. George Emdin (Rtd) was posted to Lagos fresh from War College. The security situation in Lagos was frightening and it needed a stronger approach to solve the issue.
"As at that period, the security situation in Lagos was so bad that armed robbers would even write to the streets that they were coming and they would actually come. It was so bad," Brig. Gen. Emdin said.
"He did a lot on the insecurity in the state. From my observations or knowledge of him, I think he set the foundation for what Lagos is today. It started with him. As the coordinator of the security team which involved the army, navy, airforce and police, including the other paramilitary within the state, we held regular meetings with the governor to talk about the plans and strategies for an efficient security system. With the cooperation of other agencies, I achieved a lot of success."
Despite being the most populous state in Nigeria, Lagos has no history of terrorism, banditry, and insurgency. From initiating and equipping the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), an anti-crime unit in Lagos, to solving the internecine war between motor park managers, Tinubu is being touted as the man who can solve the current national security crises.
“The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) that he helped establish is now being copied by other states," former IGP, Mike Okiro on how Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu fought crime as Lagos governor."
In another video, Chioma Agu, recounted how she could have missed out on getting educated, if not for the free education scheme of the Tinubu-led government, because her father thought her brothers should be educated other than a girl.
"When it was time for us to start the process of WAEC registration, my dad called one day and told me that he would not attend to my needs when my elder brother is still there. He advised that I withdraw for another year or not even write it," Agu said.
"While we were on it, the principal called for an emergency one afternoon and announced to us that the Lagos state governor at that time, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had paid for the WAEC fees for all Lagos state secondary school children.
"Nineteen years later, I had the opportunity of telling him how he impacted my life. When I asked him why he did that, he said he once saw a boy hawking during school hours and called him to ask why he wasn't in school. The boy told him his parents could not afford school fees. So, he turned immediately to the state house and moved for a bill for free WAEC for all. I remember he told me that he wanted education to be free for all students in Lagos state."
At a time students in the public higher institutions have been on strike for over seven months in the country, stories of free education and WAEC fees may, indeed, be instructive of the priority of Bola Tinubu for education, if elected as president.
From economy to education, and security, there is an avalanche of accomplishments in the public and private sectors to prove Tinubu is credible, tested and worthy to be trusted again.
Through the videos, many who ordinarily do not have enough knowledge and are given to lies and some propaganda about his tenure and personality, may have a change of heart.
#MyAsiwajuStory is the sort of issue-based campaign Nigerian voters need to guide us from choosing the wrong person in the 2023 polls.

Former senate president Senator Bukola Saraki has been accused of planning to cause unrest in the country after directing members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State to spread massive falsehood and propaganda in the state ahead of the 2023 gubernatorial elections.
Nigerians have started criticising the former governor of Kwara State for the statement.
Saraki made the directive in a viral video shot during the official unveiling event of new members of PDP on Saturday, in Ilorin.
He lost the leadership of the state to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in 2019 after 16 years of alleged bad governance and godfatherism.

With UK immigration personnels focused on managing refugee influx building up as a result of the war in Ukraine, there has been an increased backlog of travel applications from other countries especially for those intending to travel for academic purposes.
This situation has left prospective students from many countries including Nigeria stranded and not able to quickly process their travel requirements before the September school commencement as they normally should.
In a recent social media broadcast, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing said, “In previous years it might have been okay to apply in August for a visa to start your studies in September, [but] this year that's going to be much much too late.
“The reason for this is that UKVI, our visa and immigration processing system is under enormous pressure. You will all be aware of the horrible humanitarian situation in Ukraine, and we have had to priortise processing visas to people trying to get out of that horrible war zone. So, please help is to help you, to make sure you get to the UK in September for your studies.”
Education experts we spoke to are of the opinion that the rush by Nigerians is fueled by prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the upcoming 2023 general elections which is a leading cause of uncertainty for many citizens.
“The issues are a bit deeper than immediately apparent, but the main causative factors are Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, spiraling economy, and rising unemployment,” said Tosin Adebisi, UK education expert and Independent Consultant with boutique PR & Marketing firm, Vive Africa.
“According to our recently released Market Sentiment & Study Motivations Report, many Nigerians are very unsure about their future prospects in the country making it hard to ignore factors such as post-study visas and better employment opportunities that the UK has to offer.”
Nigerians who have the wherewithal to pursue foreign study opportunities are constantly seeking ways to expedite the processing time of their UK study applications so as to beat the commencement deadline for September higher education cycle.
“I am not surprised at the record numbers of applications this season. A peek into the number of people — usually in their tens of thousands — who attend regular influencer-anchored social media meet-ups organised by Vive Africa and their likes will give you a feel of the scale of interest and engagement we are talking about,” said Emeka Ndukwe, an education policy expert based in Abuja.
The UK government will most likely find ways with which to navigate itself and innovate around its current travel processing challenges before the next wave of prospective students hit their portals for the January 2023 intakes.
For Ibrahim Kamardeen, getting accepted to the University of Reading’s Henley Business School was surreal. Enrolling at the triple-accredited elite school for a degree in Management Accounting was a no-brainer — the Business School is a pedestal that Ibrahim knew would catapult him into a lofty career in Accounting.
According to him, "Getting a Management Accounting degree at the Henley Business School comes highly recommended. And rightfully so, as the school offered me a lucrative option of a placement — which made the prospect of pursuing the degree at the school very appealing to me." Added to this enticing feature was the self-paced mode of learning, as well as the possible professional course exemptions that studying at the school offered.
Sharing on this, as well as the relative ease of the course Ibrahim said: "Initially, my intention was just to get all the possible exemptions from my professional exams, but as the course went on, I started signing up for other modules that I felt I would enjoy and started to really enjoy the whole university experience. The course gave me so much freedom to choose how my learning panned out; it gave me such a broad knowledge of accounting and management."
With Henley Business School proudly setting its students on the right career track via its effective career advisors, Ibrahim's case was a career-defining moment. "When I went to the careers advisor in my first year, we had a conversation which kickstarted my journey. It was really inspiring; I told him what I wanted to achieve and he laid out a road map for me. Without him, I don't think I would have progressed as far as I have. Throughout the course he helped me to navigate to where I want to be. I also enjoyed meeting lots of different kinds of people in and around the university because you never know who might be helpful to you in the future."
Ibrahim eventually achieved his aim of getting a placement in a global tech firm. "I had applied to a number of organisations and had several interviews. One day, I received a call from VMware saying that, although they were not able to offer me a role in the finance team, they liked me so much that they wanted me to go there in another role. The interviewer accepted that I wanted to be in finance but said: 'just get into the company, and find your way from there.' So I took the placement, and gradually worked my way across to the revenue team"
"I really enjoyed the networking and had long conversations with my Manager and the company's CFO, who eventually mentored me throughout the duration of my placement. The placement definitely changed my view, not only to my working life but to education generally. And it has all worked out well because I've been offered a permanent job here at VMware when I graduate."
Ibrahim currently works part-time with VMware amid his professional exams in Management Accounts.
Offering his two cents to prospective undergraduates, Ibrahim noted: "Be open-minded. Be prepared to try new things. Speak to the career advisors and take advantage of whatever life at Henley Business School offers you. There are no boxes."

All Progressives Congress: The ruling party eating its young
On 28 May 2022, 28-year old Ilesanmi Ade-Ademola, a House of Representatives aspirant for the Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II seat barely escaped assassination as the All Progressives Congress primary election in the constituency descended into chaos. Subsequently, the current House of Representatives member, Omowumi Ogunlola, who was also seeking a re-election ticket, accused the agents of her co-contestant and the former Chief of Staff to Governor Kayode Fayemi, Mr. Biodun Omoleye, of masterminding the violence.
Barely a month later, the party decided to anoint the same Biodun Omoleye as the party’s candidate for the seat, totally disregarding the financial, mental and physical implications that such decision would have on other aspirants who have spent millions of naira on their campaigns.
In the same breath, the party’s highly-controversial National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, claimed that the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, participated in the Yobe North senatorial district primary election and deserved to be recognised as the party’s candidate to represent the senatorial district. Asked why the APC replaced Machina, the winner initially announced by the party with Lawan in the senatorial candidates list, Adamu said he does not have time for “negativities”. He claims that the Senate President participated within the approved timeline and journalists should “go and find out from the person who is responsible for organising the primary”.
Basically, the party leader wants Nigerians to believe that the Senate President participated in the recent presidential primary, while also contesting for the senatorial seat – at the same time.
A common refrain among many APC leaders is the intent of the party to “rule for (insert the longest years possible). According to the erstwhile party chairman, “I believe it is important for me to reach out to all leaders of our party; the youth, the women, different organisations to tell them that we must come together to get our party to run for the next 30, 40, 50 years by the grace of God”. However, it is hard to reconcile this ambition with the lack of internal democracy that has dominated the primaries. Machina’s current experience depicts one of the many examples of an APC that chooses to eat its young.
Apart from several serving lawmakers who are already making the switch to different political parties, hundreds of young, rising politicians are now staring at their political ambitions left in tatters due to the decisions of the APC honchos to gift contested seats to those they prefer, in violation of the norms of internal democracy. Recently, Shina Peller, the federal lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency also just renounced his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and explained that his decision was due to the undemocratic actions of some party members within the Oyo State APC who, he said, are determined to take the youth and majority for granted.
Also, it is also important to recall that Kolapo Kola-Daisi, an aspirant for the Oyo South Senatorial District, had to switch parties after he was already declared winner, having initially scored the majority of 212 votes, while his closest contender, Alhaji Sharafadeen Alli polled 107 votes in the senatorial primary held on May 29, 2022. He alleged that the election was, however, arbitrarily cancelled and within 24 hours, a rerun was scheduled to hold on the 31st of May, 2022, which he lost.
The widely-known instances concerning Kolapo Kola-Daisi (Oyo South Senatorial District), Shina Peller, Ilesanmi Ade-Ademola, and many others, including the decision to place the cost of its presidential, governorship and senatorial nomination forms at ₦100million, ₦50million and ₦10million respectively does not bode well for a party that, according to President Muhammadu Buhari, “must be made attractive for young people to take ownership of the party”. Sadly, a single narrative has emerged from the mouths of these young politicians in the party – APC has no regard for young people.
First, the evident nepotism, chicanery, deception, and political bullying only serves to drive the narrative that older, richer and connected party members will always prefer to use the party funds and machinery to pursue their own opportunities. Second, the message of the APC is clear: the playing field is not level. Or to borrow from George Orwell’s Animal Farm would say, all the candidates are equal, but some are more equal than others.
For any young patriotic young Nigerian seeking to contribute his quota to national development, all indications will lead anyone to conclude that such dreams would remain unachieved in such a party.
