COLOMBO, July 9 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is willing to resign to make way for all-party government, his office said in a statement on Saturday, after thousands of protesters stormed the president's official residence in Colombo.

Soldiers and police were unable to hold back the crowd of chanting protesters demanding President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation, as public anger grows over the country's worst economic crisis in seven decades.
A Facebook livestream from inside the president's house showed hundreds of protesters, some draped in the national flag, packing into rooms and corridors.


Video footage showed some of them splashing in the swimming pool, while others sat on a four-poster bed and sofas. Some could be seen emptying out a chest of drawers in images that were widely circulated on social media.

Hundreds milled about in the grounds of the colonial-era whitewashed residence, with few security personnel in sight.

Rajapaksa had left the official residence on Friday as a safety precaution ahead of the planned weekend demonstration, two defence ministry sources said. Reuters could not immediately confirm the president's whereabouts.

Wickremesinghe held talks with several political party leaders to decide what steps to take following the unrest.

"Wickremesinghe has told the party leaders that he is willing to resign as Prime Minister and make way for an all-party government to take over," his office said in a statement.

Legal luminary, Femi Falana (SAN), on Wednesday said the general elections in 2023 may be postponed if the current climate of insecurity persists. Falana was speaking on Channels Tv Sunrise Daily programme, monitored by our correspondents.

“2015, the Goodluck Jonathan administration was compelled to postpone the election because the terrorists were occupying some Local Governments in Borno State.

“Right now, the terrorists are occupying places – Local Governments in Zamfara, Katsina, Borno, and some other places. That’s problematic,” Falana said.

He added: “During the election, if that continues and you have candidates that might say, ‘these are my catchment areas, so you can’t go on with the election if you cannot secure the country.”

Gunmen in a tricycle on Tuesday night invaded a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) lodge on Udo Ekong Ekwere Street in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, raped the female occupants and carted away valuables, including laptops, cell phones and money.

Narrating the incident, one of the corps members, Emeka Emmanuel, said, “They arrived in a tricycle, popularly called Keke, and immediately started operation. They beamed high intensity torchlights everywhere and pounced on every door with heavy irons and threatened to shoot us if we failed to cooperate.”

A female corps member, who preferred not to be named, said she was dispossessed of her phones, laptop and money after the hoodlums entered her room through the back door.

She said, “We were caught unprepared. They beamed the torch through the window and threatened to shoot if the door was not quickly opened.”

Bassey Offiong, a resident in the area, said he reached out to the nearby police at Ikot Akpanabia, but that they arrived after the criminals had left.

When the police spokesman in the state, SP Odiko Macdon, was contacted, he said, “I don’t have any information about the incident but I will find out and get across to you.”

Twelve teachers and administrators of public schools in Lagos State will on Wednesday emerge winners of outstanding teachers of the year award by the government of the state.

According to a statement issued by the government and signed by the assistant director of press at the ministry of education, Ganiu Lawal, the 12 teachers will emerge from the list of 22 shortlisted teachers who made it to the semi-final stage of the competition.

The cars will be publicly presented to the winners during the second edition of the Lagos State Teachers Merit Award. The date for the public presentation is yet to be announced.

According to Mr Lawal, the event which is organised yearly by the Ministry of Education is aimed at rewarding and appreciating the passion and dedication of outstanding public school teachers across the state.

“The Annual Education Merit Awards is an initiative of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Administration to reward excellence in the teaching profession and motivate selfless teachers who put in their best in raising the quality of teaching and learning,” the statement reads in part.

He noted that the selection and nomination of teachers for the award was led by the chairperson of the Association of Private Educators in Nigeria, Lai Koiki.

“Other members of the committee include Fowler-Amba, Abisola Obasanya, Sherifat Atinuke Ogboye, Yinka Ogunde, Oyindamola Egbeyemi and Idris Adetutu,” he said.

Mr Lawal added that the committee members selected mostly from private education administrators with a blend of public sector technocrats screened 3,529 applicants and selected the 22 semi-finalists who will compete for the 12 cars

Following Tuesday night’s bomb attack on the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja, President Muhammadu Buhari has visited the facility.

Over 100 terrorists had on Tuesday night attacked the facility, freeing hundreds of inmates, among them fellow terrorists.

The vice president who came in a chopper at about 3:35pm was received by the Inspector General of Police IGP Usman Baba Alkali, paramilitary service chiefs among other top government officials.

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Wednesday, opened up on his choice of running mate, saying he preferred a younger person as vice-presidential candidate.

The former Anambra State governor stated this while featuring on Arise TV Morning Show.

He added that he prefers a younger person who has something to offer to complement his ticket rather than recycling old hands who had been in the government before now.

When asked to clarify social media rumours that he had picked a businessman and politician, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, as his vice-presidential candidate, Obi noted that though consultations are ongoing, he was yet to pick a running mate.

He said, “We’re talking to a quite number of people and Baba-Ahmed is a capable hand and I wish he is the one. But I wish I can work with somebody who is more younger.

“I prefer younger people with fresh ideas who have a lot to offer rather than recycling old hands. I want a competent person and I am building a formidable team.

“I want people who can look me in the eye and disagree with me during cabinet meetings. People who have their own minds and ideas. If you agree with me in three meetings then you are gone because that means you don’t have your own ideas. I want people and cabinet members who can say ‘Mr. President, you are wrong’.”

On when he will release his manifesto, he said rather than a manifesto, he had practiced all that he is preaching and the records are there for Nigerians to verify.

“I have replicated all that I am promising Nigerians before. It would be the same thing. What I did in Anambra and what I achieved is what we will replicate on a larger scale. We want Nigeria to become the engine of production,” the presidential candidate said.

The former Peoples Democratic Party chieftain noted that despite the campaigns of calumny online and rumours that northerners won’t vote for him during the 2023 election, he believed that Nigerians and people from the north will vote for him based on competence.

“I am contesting to be Nigeria’s president to solve the country’s problem and not because I am from a part or region of the country.

“We need to do things that will bring people hope. Nigerians must be proud of this country and that is what I planned to do,” he added.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) says Abba Kyari, suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, is still in custody.

Kyari, who is currently under investigation for alleged drug trafficking, had been sent to Kuje prison.

There have been concerns about Kyari’s whereabouts since the prison where he is being kept was invaded on Tuesday night.

Daily Trust had reported how gunmen broke into the facility and released some of the inmates, including Boko Haram suspects and bandits.

There were unconfirmed reports that Kyari and some VIP prisoners fled during the commotion.

But in an update on the situation, Umar Abubakar, NCoS spokesman, said Kyari was in custody.

“A total of 879 inmates escaped from the facility during the unfortunate attack. As at the time of this report, 443 have been recaptured, 551 inmates are currently in custody, 443 inmates are still at large, 4 inmates dead and 16 inmates sustained various degree of injuries and are being treated at the moment. However, efforts are ongoing to recapture all fleeing inmates.

“The Service will deploy its Corrections Information Management System (CIMS) in synergy with National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to track all fleeing inmates and return them to custody. This is also to
confirms to the general public that DCP Abba Kyari and other VIPs held in the facility did not escape. They are presently in custody, hale and hearty.

“Recall that after the attack at the Medium Custodial Centre in Agbolongo, Oyo state, the Honourable Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, met with the heads of the security agencies under his supervision where the idea of Joint Security Taskforce comprising the Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigerian Immigration Service, and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps was formed to forstall further breaches on custodial facilities. As at the time of the attack on the Kuje facility, we have 38 military personnel on ground in addition to personnel of the Nigerian Police, Civil Defence, DSS, NSCDC and our Armed Squad. This is the Minister’s efforts to rejig the security architecture of our facilities.”
