Tragic Killing of IPOB Supporter Sparks Fear in Mbaise Community

Mbaise, Imo State – Tragedy struck in Mbaise as Collins Chima Eze, a well-known supporter of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was killed by unidentified gunmen in his hometown on Thursday. The brutal attack has left his family and community members in shock, as tensions rise amid escalating violence in the region.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants ambushed Eze in the early hours of the morning, opening fire before fleeing the scene. While the motive behind the killing remains unclear, the police have launched an investigation to track down the perpetrators. Authorities have called for calm, assuring the public that they are committed to bringing the attackers to justice.

Local community leaders and residents expressed concern that the killing of Eze, who was known for his peaceful advocacy, might signify a disturbing trend of targeted violence. The incident has also sparked fears for the safety of his family members, as reports suggest that his son, Emmanuel Chima Eze, could be the next target.

It is reported that Emmanuel has either gone into hiding or fled the nation for his life and safety, with his current whereabouts unknown.

Jamie Pajoel International (JPI) has announced the selection of the 27 Imo State youths to attend the 4th edition of the JPI Annual Leadership Conference in Kigali, Rwanda.

The conference is part of the JPI Global Exchange Program, which aims to foster leadership skills, entrepreneurship, and nation building.

The conference will take place from the 17th to the 20th of August 2023 at the Marriot Hotel Kigali Rwanda. The selection was based on merit, with the aim of identifying youths with a high sense of purpose and great leadership skills. Ambassador Dr. Marksman Chinedu Ijiomah was born in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State into a low-class family.

His father was an inter-state driver while his mother was a tailor.

Being born into a low-class family, he didn't have the best of education.

At age 9, his family relocated to Port Harcourt in Rivers State from Abia, into a house without a concrete floor.

According to him “My growing up was not easy. But I had always believed a man is alive to make a difference – and that was why I decided to leave home in search of greener pasture. Although my father disagreed and my mother and siblings quarrelled with me but I have made up my mind to succeed in life. I desired a better life than my parents and the environment I was living could offer me.”

“I relocated to Port Harcourt where I started working as a labourer in construction sites, earning four hundred naira a day. I will gladly calculate my earnings at the end of the day and happily send money home to my parents on weekends for their upkeep – and from there I started enjoying the independence having money brings.”

“From there, I moved to Enugu where I graduated from being a labourer to being a mason, bricklayer, carpenter to iron bender and such other jobs” he added.

And as they say, the rest is history.

Dr. Marksman Chinedu Ijiomah is a Civil Engineer who holds multiple degrees and certifications. He has received numerous international awards and recognitions.

It was then I realized that my dental background was more clinical oriented and has not prepared me for a research-related career"

The young doctor out of the zeal to help people become better, went into researching, her goal was becoming a research expert so that apart from doing ground-breaking research, she can coach younger researchers to enhance their research capacity. There and then she went ahead to developed her online teaching capacity to enable her to share knowledge with the world.

In pursuit of her goal, Dr. Mrs. Linda Iheme enrolled for Master of Science (MSc) in Public Health and Health Systems, at the University of Waterloo. During her MSc, she said "I prioritized equipping myself with various research methodologies. Hence, I took courses on statistics, epidemiology, health informatics, and qualitative analysis. Eventually, I developed more interest in quantitative research. I went ahead to write a research paper with quantitative methods, presented it at a pan-Canadian research conference, and won the research innovation award for that conference in 2018 summer. My thesis was focused on testing the feasibility and acceptability of a self-report assessment tool for community-dwelling older adults"
She worked with 5 organizations in Ontario and Nova Scotia to implement this pilot project...

What a woman? I can hear your mind saying, well that's just the starting, she didn't stop there, she went further to obtain a Ph.D. in Researching.

She said, With a Master's degree, one can do so many things but one can not lead a research team. She wanted more, and no restriction was going to stop her. The idea of being a principal investigator was encouraging her and she can only be that principal investigator with a Ph.D. She needed a Ph.D. and a Ph.D. she got. Though she got Ph.D. offers from the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo, She chose Waterloo because of the friendly atmosphere and supervision support that graduate students at Waterloo enjoy. Such support system was top notch and could not be found elsewhere.

Dr. Iheme while narrating her stay at Waterloo University, she said "Waterloo offered me admission and a full scholarship to study Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Aging, Health, and Wellbeing by 2019. In particular, I am involved with international research that has championed the establishment of routine self-report assessments for older adults who reside in the community, to aid early detection of their health decline. I currently work with older adults from Canada and Nigeria, and we are open to piloting this project in your country too. The data collected during this project will be analyzed and the findings will help inform policies that will benefit older adults in their localities. Besides, doing the Ph.D. has allowed me to perfect my quantitative research skills through advanced courses on quantitative methodology and more practice of my data analysis skills, I have learnt a lot about research and this doctorate degree (Ph.D.) will make me an official expert in aging research. It is worth it"

THE ENUGU STATE GUBERNATORIAL PENSIONS (AMENDMENT) BILL AND THE SOCIAL MEDIA OUTCRY

The attention of the Enugu State House of Assembly has been drawn to the news making round in the social media regarding the Gubernatorial Pensions Bill pending before the House.

Section 124(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as Amended empowers the State Houses of Assembly to make laws for the grant of pension or gratuity to or in respect of a person who had held office as Governor or Deputy Governor.

The said Section 124(5) provides as follows:

‘Provisions may be made by a Law of a House of Assembly for the grant of a pension or gratuity to or in respect of a person who had held office as Governor or Deputy Governor and was not removed from office as a result of impeachment; and any provision made in pursuance of this subsection shall be a charge upon the consolidated Revenue Fund of the State’.

From the above provisions of the Constitution, the Enugu State House of Assembly is basically carrying out its constitutional responsibility in accordance with the express provisions of the Constitution. The Enugu State Gubernatorial Pensions Law 2007 is an existing law. The House has not acted outside the purview of its constitutional mandate by introducing a Bill to amend an existing Law.

For the purposes of clarity and information for those who may not know, the Enugu State Gubernatorial Pensions Law was first enacted in 2007 and subsequently amended in 2017.

Furthermore, there are laid down rules and procedures to be followed before a Bill is passed into law. The first stage is to introduce the Bill to the House, i.e First Reading (that was what the House just did in the instant case), the second stage is the Second Reading when the Honourable Members of the House will discuss the general principles; make their contributions for or against the Bill. Thereafter, the public would be invited for Public Hearing to enable them air their views as to the desirability or otherwise of the Bill to be passed into law. The outcomes of the Public Hearing will then guide and inform the decision of the House regarding the Bill.

The Bill was introduced on Thursday 11th March, 2021 (NOT TUESDAY 11TH MARCH, 2021) as being circulated in the social media. This tells a lot about other misinformation concerning the pending Bill being deliberately circulated to portray the Enugu State House of Assembly in bad light before the public. It is also amazing that such pending Bill is being treated as though it has already been passed into law.

Enugu State House of Assembly remains committed to the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities without fear or favour. The House is also sensitive to the feelings of our people and therefore appreciates the feedback and reactions from our constituents and the public. This is the beauty of democracy and as the peoples’ representatives, we will not disappoint our people.

Enugu State House of Assembly therefore assures our people that the House will follow due procedure and do the needful during the next plenary.

Hon. Ugonna Ozurigbo, Member representing Nkwere/ Isu/ Nwangele/ Njaba Federal Constituency has rolled out a multi-million Naira empowerment program, presenting over 60 vehicles to his constituents as part of plans to enhance livelihood as well as create business opportunities for them.

The vehicles were presented on Monday in Nwangele LGA, Imo State to the beneficiaries under the 3rd phase of the lawmaker’s Constituency Support Programme.

Ozurigbo who is the House Committee Chairman on Justice, in his brief remark, said the presentation, was in fulfillment of his personal vow to God and to improve on transportation system in his constituency.

The Member representing Nkwere/ Isu/ Nwangele/ Njaba Federal Constituency who assured his constituent that they would experience the 4th phase of his empowerment scheme in the next 3 months said the proposed Civic Centre he promised his constituents is already in the 2021 budget.

According to Ozurigbo who had only few months ago presented over 40 vehicles to his constituents in the second phase of the programme ,"In the next 3months the 4th phase of this program will come up and over six hundred beneficiaries would be empowered."

He said "What we are doing today is what we have always done to make the people of this constituency happy and make them feel the impact of democracy."

Rt Hon .Femi Gbajamiamila, who witnessed the presentation, commended Ozurigbo's large heart, describing him as an embodiment of what a representative should be.

The Speaker, who was represented by Alhassan Ado -Doguwa, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the vehicles for the upliftment of their lives and those of their family members.

He urged those who missed out in the programme to exercise patience as they could still benefit from subsequent empowerment programmes.

He said ,"The entire house of reps members are proud of you like we are proud of Senator Rochas Okorocha. This is an uncommon presentation keep the flag flying for your people will pay you back."

"What we are witnessing today is unprecedented and an indication that our members feel the pulse of the people. Those who benefited should use these empowerment judiciously and those who didn't should relax for your time is coming."

Senator Rochas Okorocha, Former Governor of Imo State now Senator representing Orlu Senatorial District commended Ozurigbo, describing him as his son in whom he is well pleased.

Okorocha who was full of praises for Ozurigbo said the lawmaker's gesture is a redemption of his electoral promise to make impact on the lives of members of his constituency.

Hon Nkiru Onyejeocha reps Member from Abia State and deputy Chief Whip at the House of Representatives, enjoined the people to be faithful to the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the party was committed to delivering the dividends of democracy to all parts of the state.

Mr. John Alozie a recipients of the vehicles distributed, described Rep. Ozurigbo as a promise keeper who cares only of introducing beneficial programmes for his people.

Mr. Alozie recalled that Ozurigbo did the exact same thing in his first term just before the 2014 before he was elected to the state house for the second term, adding that it was a major reason he was strongly supported to win the race to the federal house.
