CultureRe: How Is Christmas Celebrated In Nigeria? by qymekkam(m): 5:16am On Aug 06, 2009
because i was born in america i find christmas in nigeria very boring. ive experienced it twice. i said balom christmas to several people and no money angry. (my grandma said i would get money if i said that) we stayed in the village for christmas and just killed a cow and ate it and said happy chritsmas a million times. maybe chirstmas in the city will be funner with the festivals and whatnot.

TV/MoviesRe: Common Flaws in Nigerian Home Videos by qymekkam(m): 5:58am On Aug 02, 2009
so many flaws. the major flaws to me is the special effects its always the same damn special effects with the same sound. thats is so 1972. the sound in all nollywood movies are horrible once i even saw the boom in one of the scenes in a movie made in 2008. another flaw is when they bring "americans" in the movies. why is it these americans that have never been to nigeria have nigerian accents. i know there are real americans in nigeria why not use them!!! child actors in nigeria suck. they sound as if they are reading a script. an example would be in this one movie i watched (i forgot the name) it had genevive nnaji in it acting as a twin who didnt know she was a twin. i know lots of nollywood movies are made cheap but why cant there be at least one international quality movie.

As someone who is working towards being an architect one day, I must say that Nigerian architects are really dull when it comes to the design of our buildings. Did all of you see that rendering? For a second I thought it was something dug out of some 70s archive! We need more innovation put into our new structures. . .

thats how many projects are in nigeria dull. not a whole lot of fancy

TravelMy Nigerian Trip Report by qymekkam(op): 2:30am On Jul 01, 2009
i thought i might share my last experiences with you guys. i would have done this earlier but i didnt know about nairaland at the time.

we (my family) went to nigeria for the third time on dec 18 2007. i was 13 at the time. i was very optimitic of nigeria after seeing many nigerian movies of mansion neighbirhoods and many other things. my optimism for nigeria went high than low than very high. you will see what i mean in my report. the places i visited were lagos, onitsha, awka, enugu, jos, and abuja

the instant i stepped off the plane onto the jetway i was sweating like a fat lady that just finished excercing. the air conditoner was broken but i was just happy to see a modern full airport. we than went down the elevators to immagration. the immigration room was small and people just kept coming down the elevator many people kept pushing and falling because of the lack of space and the steady supply of people coming in. it took us almost an hour to get our luggage. we than went outside to get a van that would take us to are village near onitsha. we stopped for gas near northern lagos. and ate at mr. biggs. thee were 4 fast food restaurants inside a gas station that impressed me. after the food is where my optimism started going down for a while. the last time i visted was when i was in the second grade. i remeber seeing trash and burning trash on the roads but i didnt remember lagos having this. there was so much of this.

the drive was horrible. there were elephant sized pot holes every couple of meters(no lie), several police checkpoints that were asking for bribes. and the worst traffic ive ever experienced in my life. and to top it all off no air conditioning!!! and i live in san francisco i know bad traffic. we finnaly arrived in are village at niight. a week into living in my village we went to visit onitsha. my first impression wasnt a good one. there was trash every where. mostly pur water bags. open gutters which were filled with trash. bad traffic. and detiorating buildings. i wasnt expecting much anyway my mom told me it was horrible anyway she went to school in onitsha. two days later we went to awka. it was way better than onitsha. but still not as great as i hoped. there were some developments and there were many houses andneighborhoods being built. we went to see one of our many houses in a mansion neighborhood. that was pretty cool.

about 2 days later we went to enugu. i didnt know what to expect. when we arrived the first thing i noticed that was different from everywhere in nigeria that ive been so far is it was clean. that put a smile on my face. there were also lots of modern buildings. unlike onitsha where every building looks the same and is in dire need of paint. we went to a mr. biggs before we left and i had a cheeseburger. it tasted weird. and was sticky. at least they tried.

about a week later we were leaving to head off to jos. this was the start of where my optimism went back up. on our way to the bus station i saw a different side of onitsha. the area looked more organized and there were more modern area's.

i was expect the same drive as lagos to are village to be the same as onitsha to jos. it was great. the road was great. there was probably only 5 potholes and they were all near onitsha anyway. no traffic. and a very scenic ride. we arrived in jos at night and went striaght to another one of our houses.

jos was a really great city. even though it was not as modern as i hoped. it worked for the city. it looked histroical. one thing i really loved about jos was that it was cold. i was tired of the sun. anyways we toured the city. we went to a muesam, a fast food restaurant called juice and grillade near the muesam(which i highly recommend) denny's or ihop quality burgers. we were supposed to go to yankari game reserve but were tired of driving so we went to the jos zoo instead which i still enjoyed. we also went rock climbing near our house and got some really nice pictures of the city.

we visited some family and also went to a huge market. you cant miss this place its one of the biggest places in the city.

we left jos after a week to head to abuja. i was very optimistic of abuja. many people kept saying it was like america. the drive to abuja was also trafficless, smooth, and scenic. there were alot of construction workers adding miles of underground wires to this highway. we arrived and spent the night at our uncles house. we toured the city the day after. as i expect a very clean city. they had a large amount of street cleaners on duty at almost all times. there were nice freeways. abuja had he least amount of junk cars. there were many nice hotels. we ate at one but i forgot the name. no matter where i looked in abuja i could see a crane or a bulldozer. i knew this city was going somewhere. the only thing that i didnt like about abuja was that when there was a little bit of traffic people would drive on the side walks.

the next day we were going to lagos. i begged my mom if we can fly to lagos since she was the on holding us back from flying because she hates flying. i also didnt want to go on another road trip. she was also tired of driving and changed her mind about flying. the airport was better than the pictures ive seen. again lots of construction around the area.

we flew virgin nigeria to lagos in a one our flight. which shocked me since it takes more tha 12 hours by car. after seeing abuja my optimism for lagos was high again. when we enetered the airport the air conditner was working. and the baggage claim took only about 10 minutes and we had 8 bags and luggages. maybe i just need to believe more and good luck would happen to me. we went to my unlces house in agege. the area wasnt impressive but that didnt let my optimism go down. i was appreicating the little things like unlike onitsha the gutters were actually filled with water.

the next day my uncle took me and my brother to lagos island. i was very impressed. i knew lagos had skyscrapers. but i never seen the whole skyline. it was huge. we went through an area that reminded me of chinatown. it was very crowded and this was only with people. we went to another mr. biggs and the burgers tasted good. all i needed to do was believe. after we went home and that was the last day i has in lagos before we went back to america.

overall i enjoyed nigeria. what made me dissappointed at first was that i was expecting a dubai or shanghai or something. i learned to enjoy to appreiatciate everyday things that are becoming more and more common in nigeria. like street lights. my parents liked abuja. so much that they decided were going to move there in 2 to 3 months. and you may be surprised to hear by my report that i want to move to lagos instead of abuja.

in lagos we didnt really attepmt to see the good areas. yet i still loved it. i know i probably wouldnt want to leave it if visited victoria island, ikoyi, or lekki. ever since my visit ive been really interested in nigeria.ive done alot of research and projects at school and taught a lot of people in my school what nigeria is like. and dont worry people i didnt show them any crappy area's just the good to give them a different perspective of africa and not just nigeria.

i have a American accent but im able to do a nigerian one to. in nigeria i always try to use my nigerian accent to avoid people asking me what did i say. heres a story that hapenen to me many times in nigeria in many different versions. someone would start talking to me and i would use my amrican accent. than most of the time they ask me a question that takes a essay long answer. by the time im done talking. in igbo they say to there nearby friend "what did he say". and his friend would say "a ma rum" i would get so mad. i said i understand igbo i just dont speak it i know you didnt know what i was saying. if you didnt know why didnt you stop me from talking nonstop for 5 minutes. i just wasted 5 minutes talking to someone who couldnt even say i dont undertand you .
