American Sy Perlis set the record by benching 187.2 pounds (85 kilograms) at the National Bench Push-Pull Press and Dead Lift Championships on Saturday. The Arizona Republic reports that the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters previous record in the 90-and-over age division was 135 pounds (61 kilograms) and had stood since 2005. Perlis took up weightlifting when he was 60 but didn’t enter his first championship competition until five years ago. “I got a lot of satisfaction out of it, and it made me feel good, and it was good for me,” he said. Association President Gus Rethwisch said Perlis is an inspiration. “We’ve had a lot of lifters in their middle 80s, late 80s and occasionally we get one 90 and over, but they’ve never inspired people (like Perlis has),” Rethwisch said. Chhanda Dutta, chief of the Clinical Gerontology Branch of the National Institute on Aging, said it’s a common misconception that exercise is unsafe for older people. “The risk of leading a sedentary lifestyle is much greater than anything related to exercise,” Dutta said. “I think it’s important for people to realize that age alone doesn’t determine the intensity of your workout.” Perlis said his doctor knows he participates in the sport and has told him, “If you can do it, do it.” His five-day-a-week training routine includes cardiovascular exercise and weightlifting. source http://www.sportlive.co.za/oddballs/2013/06/15/ninety-one-year-old-american-sets-weightlifting-record http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/06/ninety-one-year-old-sets-weightlifting.html |
A Chinese man has posted photographs of him posing next to an 'alien' which he claims to have trapped after it crash landed. The pictures of Mr Li standing next to the rather crude looking extraterrestrial have sparked a frenzy of speculation social networking sites across China. Mr Li claims he saw a formation of UFOs buzzing across the night sky along the Yellow River in Binzhou Shangdong province. Suddenly, one of the crafts plummeted to earth and soon afterwards Mr Li discovered the charred remains of the visitor from outta space in a rabbit trap, he claims. Mr Li insists he took the bizarre looking creature back to be stored in a freezer at his home after the crash-landing in March. However, the outlandish claims were quickly brought back to earth. Police issued a statement saying the rather unconvincing figure at the bottom of a chest freezer was, in fact, not another life form but high quality rubber. 'The alien purported electrocuted and discovered by a man in Binzhou is a high quality imitation,' the Jinan Police posted on their Sina microblog. 'The body is made up of high quality rubber.' Undeterred by the police attempts to pour scorn on the possibility the alien is real, Chinese bloggers are busy trying to connect the Shandong alien to a purported UFO siting in Hubei province. https://www.freeimagehosting.net/t/83zf3.jpg source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2338952/Chinese-man-reveals-pictures-alien-freezer-claiming-witnessed-UFO-crash-land-near-house.html#ixzz2VtqVgMHy http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/06/chinese-man-reveals-pictures-of-alien.html ![]() |

THE Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed banks and other financial institutions that have business relationship with the outlawed Islamic sect, Boko Haram, to report to it. According to the letter entitled: “Terrorism prevention, proscription order notice 2013, signed by the Acting Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department (CBN), Mr I. T Nwaohe and addressed to all banks and financial institutions operating in the country, the apex bank said the directive was in line with the recent Federal Government’s official declaration of both Jamaatu Ahlis-Sunna Liddaawati Wal Jihad (Boko Haram) and a similar group, the Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan, as terrorist organisations. The banking watchdog directed banks and other financial institutions to check their data base for the two terrorist organisations and that of their associates and report to it, adding that “where no account or business relationship are maintained for any of the proscribed names or their associates, a nil return should be rendered.” It will be recalled President Goodluck Jonathan recently approved the proscription of Boko Haram and authorised the gazetting of an order declaring its activities as illegal and as acts of terrorism. Approved by President Jonathan, pursuant to Section 2 of the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2011 (as amended), it officially brings the activities of both groups within the purview of the Terrorism Prevention Act and any person associated with the two groups can now be legally prosecuted and sentenced to penalties specified in the act. “The proscription order warns the general public that any person participating in any form of activities involving or concerning the collective intentions of the said groups will be violating the provisions of the Terrorism Prevention Act,” Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicty, Dr Reuben Abati, announced in a statement. Section 5 (1) of the act prescribes a term of imprisonment of not less than 20 years for any person who knowingly, in any manner, directly or indirectly, solicits or renders support to the commission of an act of terrorism or to a terrorist group. “Support in Subsection (1) of the section is defined as “incitement to commit a terrorist act through the internet or any electronic means or through the use of printed materials or through the dissemination of terrorist information,” “receipt or provision of material assistance, weapons including biological, chemical or nuclear weapons, explosives, training, transportation, false documentation or identification to terrorists or terrorist groups,” “receipt or provision of information or moral assistance, including invitation to adhere to a terrorist or terrorist group,” “entering or remaining in a country for the benefit of, or at the direction of or in association with a terrorist group,” or “providing or making available, such financial or other related services prohibited under this Act or as may be prescribed by regulations made pursuant to this act.” source http://tribune.com.ng/news2013/en/news/item/14248-cbn-asks-bank-to-report-business-dealings-with-boko-haram.html http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/06/banks-mandated-to-report-business.html |

According to reports, The Economic Crime Unit of Barcelona has accused Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, and his father, of tax fraud between 2007 and 2009, which could potentially land them in jail. The prosecution says, Messi’s father, who is also his manager and agent, created shell corporations in tax havens in Belize and Uruguay and then transferred his son’s imaging rights between 2007 and 2009, only to sign further deals with other shell-corporations to avoid paying taxes on €4.165 million ($5.53 million) in income. The idea, the prosecution said, was to channel funds from the countries in which sponsors or firms were paying Messi to the shell-corporations without being subject to taxation, and with “total opacity” in the face of the Spanish tax authorities as to who was truly receiving those papers, who was “none other than the accused, Lionel Messi,” in the words of the prosecutor. Relevant facts were also “omitted” from other tax documents in order to hide from Spain’s tax authorities that these rights were being ceded to corporations domiciled elsewhere. Messi and his father are accused of three counts of tax evasion. According to Spanish law, if found guilty they could face between two and six years behind bars, and a fine worth more than $1 million. Messi in response to the allegation said, ''We are surprised about this news because we have never committed any infringement," the striker said in an English-language statement released on his Facebook account. "We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advice of our tax consultants who will take care of clarifying this situation,". http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/06/why-messi-might-go-to-jail.html ![]() http://www.forbes.com/sites/afontevecchia/2013/06/12/lionel-messi-accused-of-hiding-5m-from-spanish-tax-authorities-barca-star-could-face-jail-time/ |
for celebrities and non-celebrities alike Lacking in Stimulating Thoughts: Do you know? Thinking is the best way to train your brain, so think more, write more, explore more all this will help you to keep your brain fresh. Lacking in the brain stimulation, may cause brain shrinkage. Over Eating: This is most usual cause, most of the times we find tasty food and start eating more that what our body requires. This cause hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power. No Breakfast: Due to our busy schedule, we normally forget to take the breakfast. People who do not take breakfast are most probable to have a low blood sugar level. Thus leads to insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing degeneration. Smoking: I never smoke, but I put this in the list as a message to those who smoke “PLEASE STOP SMOKING” because it causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease in later life. Sleep Deprivation: I work up to the late hours to achieve my goals, so there was no rest for my brain. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells. Oh! more cells dead, more loss of memory. Head Covered while Sleeping: Sleeping with the covered head increases the concentration of Carbon Dioxide and decreases concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects. High Sugar Consumption: Extra Sweets! can interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interface in brain development. Air Pollution: This is the common problem, wherever you go, you are welcome with the polluted air, that’s pathetic. As the brain is the largest oxygen consumer of the body, and inhaling the polluted air will decrease the supply of oxygen to the brain, thus there will be a have damage to the brain. So try to be away from the polluted air. Working your brain during Illness: Giving the stress to the brain when sick my lead to decrease effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain. Talking Rarely: Intellectual conversation promote efficiency of the brain. So be active participants in the meetings and get-togethers. I always talk more then required so no problem. http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/06/top-10-biggest-brain-damaging-habits.html http://www.medicalopedia.org/295/top-10-brain-damaging-habits/ |

Alexandra Kinova had four boys and a girl by caesarean section on Sunday, they say. The births took place "without any complications", according to doctors at Prague's Institute for the Care of Mother and Child. The mother and babies were placed in an intensive care unit but are believed to be in a good condition. The Czech Republic's first quintuplets, who were conceived naturally without IVF, have a 95% chance of growing up healthy, the Associated Press quoted Zbynek Stranak, chief doctor at the neonatal section of the institute, as saying. The boys' names are reportedly Deniel, Michael, Alex and Martin, while the girl is called Terezka. Their mother, who is from the town of Milovice, about 20km (12 miles) north-east of the capital, Prague, already had one son. She originally believed she was pregnant with twins, but in March doctors upped it to four - and then five in April. http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/06/woman-gives-birth-to-first-set-of.html# |

Australia has been ranked as the world's happiest nation among developed economies for the third year running. Australia won the top position, due to the overall strength of its economy, in the Better Life Index compiled by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Sweden, Canada, Norway and Switzerland also made it to the top five. The survey ranked more than 30 countries on criteria such as income levels, health, safety and housing, reports the BBC. "Australia performs exceptionally well in measures of well-being, as shown by the fact that it ranks among the top countries in a large number of topics in the Better Life Index," the OECD said on its website. More than 73% of Australia's 23 million people aged 15 to 64 hold a paid job, which is above the OECD average. Life expectancy at birth is also higher, at almost 82 years. Economic strength Australia's economy has posted more than two decades of straight growth due to demand for its natural resources. The nation also managed to sidestep the worst of the financial crisis and was the only major developed nation to avoid the global recession in 2009. The country's economic strength has been reflected in the Australian dollar, which is currently trading close to 30 year highs. However, the government is starting to see challenges to growth as the mining boom tapers off, including rising unemployment. As a result, Australia's Labour government is now looking to move the economy away from its dependence on mining towards sectors such as construction and manufacturing. Another challenge they face is a widening income gap. According to the OECD, the top 20% of Australia's population earn six times more than the bottom 20%. Will Smith has revealed his son Jaden wants to move into a house of his own for his 15th birthday. The teen plans to become emancipated - and wants to be allowed to live independently from his parents. Smith explained: 'He says, "Dad, I want to be emancipated," I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place.' In an interview with The Sun newspaper Smith explained that he and wife Jada Pinkett Smith are eager to teach Jaden and sister Willow, 12, the rights and wrongs of life by allowing them to make their own mistakes instead of using traditional disciplines such as sending them to their room and taking away their luxuries for the day. He told the Sun newspaper: 'We generally don't believe in punishment. From the time Jaden was five or six we would sit him down, and all he has to do is be able to explain why what he did was the right thing for his life.' Will - who also has 19-year-old son, Trey, from his previous marriage with Sheree Zampino - wants his children to take responsibility for their own lives. The Men in Black 3 star's own father Willard - who ran a refrigeration installation business in Philadelphia after leaving the US Air Force - was a very strict parent who believed his son should be seen and not heard so Will was keen for his own offspring have a completely different upbringing to him. As Lagos State government moves to further strengthen the Road Traffic Law, commercial bus drivers and conductors will soon begin to wear uniform and badges. Besides, owners of such buses will have their identities aboard the vehicles. This is part of the revelations by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, while briefing journalists on the activities of the ministry in the last 365 days. He said, “The transport unions have agreed on the type of uniform and the badges they will give to the commercial bus drivers and their conductors. The identities of the owners (owners’ cards) of the commercial buses will also be aboard these buses.” Again, the commercial bus drivers must be re-certified by attending the drivers’ institute, where they will undergo comprehensive tests - including vision and driving tests. The Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Lagos State branch, Mr. Tajudeen Agbede, reacting to this development, said the union would always support the government in its efforts to actualise the contents of the Road Traffic Law, which, he noted, aim at saving lives and ensuring sanity on Lagos roads. He stated, “We are always in support of government by making sure our members obey the Road Traffic Law. It is for the good of everyone in the state.” culled from Punch http://www.punchng.com/feature/lagos-pulse/commercial-bus-drivers-conductors-to-wear-uniform/ They should bring this to Abuja too!the bus drivers here need to be tested! http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/05/lagos-commercial-bus-drivers-conductors.html |

A New York City start-up is peddling a men's button-down wool shirt that the company says never needs washing and won't smell, even after 100 days of continuous use, including after a sweaty 5-mile run. Cutting-edge clothiers Wool&Prince says it has put the wool used in this 'no wash' shirt (still in the prototype phase) through a special process that makes it soft to the touch, resistant to wrinkles and odour-repellent. Microsoft's Hotmail, the free webmail service used by hundreds of millions of people around the world, was phased out Friday, as the US tech giant completed a rebranding to Outlook.com. "We're excited to announce that we've completed upgrading all Hotmail customers to Outlook.com," Microsoft's Dick Craddock said in a blog post late Thursday. "Coupled with the growing organic excitement for Outlook.com, this has pushed us to over 400 million active Outlook.com accounts." The transition began in February, when Microsoft began a test of moving users to the new Outlook.com services. "Hotmail was still one of the most widely used services, with over 300 million active accounts," Craddock said. "This made the magnitude of the process incredible, maybe even unprecedented. This meant communicating with hundreds of millions of people, upgrading all their mailboxes, equaling more than 150 million gigabytes of data, and making sure that every person's mail, calendar, contacts, folders and personal preferences were preserved in the upgrade." Outlook.com addresses will be better synched to other Microsoft services, such as its Bing search engine and Skydrive, the cloud storage system. -AFP http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/05/hotmail-phased-out.html |
Benedict XVI moved back to the Vatican on Thursday, opening an uncertain era in Catholic Church history where an "emeritus pope" and a ruling pontiff will live as neighbours for the first time. Benedict, the first pope to abdicate in 600 years, will live out his retirement in a restored convent in the Vatican gardens with a view of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica and just a short walk from the residence of his successor, Francis. Benedict, 86 and in frail health, arrived by helicopter from Castel Gandolfo, the papal summer residence south of Rome, where he had been staying since February 28 while the convent was being restored, reports Reuters. Francis, 76, was due to greet Benedict later in front of the convent, the first time they have met since March 23, when Francis visited Benedict at Castel Gandolfo and Benedict renewed a pledge of "unconditional reverence and obedience" to Francis. The small building includes a chapel, a library for the former theology professor, quarters for his aides and a guest room for his older brother, Georg, a monsignor. While the presence of a reigning pope and a former one is a new situation, experts say it would only cause difficulties if Benedict tried to influence Pope Francis's decisions, something he has promised not to do. Shortly before his resignation, Benedict said he would be "withdrawing into prayer" and would live out his remaining days "hidden from the world". Still, some Church scholars say that in the event that Francis undoes some of Benedict's policies while he is still alive, the former pope could become a lightning rod for conservatives and polarize the Church. "Benedict almost certainly will be a point of reference for critics of Francis, especially in conservative circles. You can easily imagine them saying, ‘Benedict wouldn't have done it this way,'" said John Allen, author of several books on the Church and correspondent for the National Catholic reporter. "That criticism will circulate on blogs, in journals, and in the pews, no matter where he's physically located, and Benedict himself won't be a party to it. If anything, being behind Vatican walls will make it more difficult for the opposition to reach him and claim some sort of blessing," Allen said. Vatican officials have said the men, both of whom wear slightly different white vestments, would likely meet occasionally and perhaps confer on Church matters but that Francis is his own man. "On a human level, it's hard to imagine that Pope Francis would treat the retired pope as some sort of 'untouchable.' I think they can certainly spend time together and exchange views without causing any crisis in the Church," said John Thavis, author of "The Vatican Diaries". Benedict's two months away have allowed everyone to get used to the idea that he is no longer on the Vatican stage, said Father John Paul Wauck, professor at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. . "It was a healthy hiatus during which Francis had the freedom to establish himself as the new successor of St. Peter," Wauck said, adding that he would be surprised if Benedict tried to influence Church decisions. When the two met in March, Benedict looked exceptionally frail. But the Vatican says he suffers only from normal ailments of old age and has no serious illness. http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/05/former-pope-benedict-xvi-moves-back-to.html |

"According to the Italian news agency ANSA, a team of archeologists working in the ancient Phrygian city of Hierapolis in southwestern Turkey claims to have located the Plutonium, or Pluto's Gate -- an ancient pilgrim site considered the entryway to the underworld. A small cave near the temple of Apollo, the Plutonium grew in association with death from deadly gases it emitted. Francesco D'Andria of the University of Salento announced the discovery during a press conference in Turkey in mid-March, according to La Gazzetta Del Mezzogiorno." http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/04/gate-to-hell-found.html |

In June 2009, The Atlantic published a cover story on the Grant Study, one of the longest-running longitudinal studies of human development. The project, which began in 1938, has followed 268 Harvard undergraduate men for 75 years, measuring an astonishing range of psychological, anthropological, and physical traits—from personality type to IQ to drinking habits to family relationships to “hanging length of his scrotum”—in an effort to determine what factors contribute most strongly to human flourishing. Recently, George Vaillant, who directed the study for more than three decades, published Triumphs of Experience, a summation of the insights the study has yielded. Among them: “Alcoholism is a disorder of great destructive power.” Alcoholism was the main cause of divorce between the Grant Study men and their wives; it was strongly correlated with neurosis and depression (which tended to follow alcohol abuse, rather than precede it); and—together with associated cigarette smoking—it was the single greatest contributor to their early morbidity and death. Above a certain level, intelligence doesn't matter. There was no significant difference in maximum income earned by men with IQs in the 110–115 range and men with IQs higher than 150. Aging liberals have more sex. Political ideology had no bearing on life satisfaction—but the most-conservative men ceased intimate relations at an average age of 68, while the most-liberal men had active sex lives into their 80s. “I have consulted urologists about this,” Vaillant writes. “They have no idea why it might be so.” But the factor Vaillant returns to most insistently is the powerful correlation between the warmth of your relationships and your health and happiness in old age. After The Atlantic’s 2009 article was published, critics questioned the strength of this correlation. Vaillant revisited the data he had been studying since the 1960s for his book, an experience that further convinced him that what matters most in life are relationships. For instance, the 58 men who scored highest on measurements of “warm relationships” earned an average of $141,000 a year more at their peak salaries (usually between ages 55 and 60) than the 31 men who scored lowest; the former were also three times more likely to have achieved professional success worthy of inclusion in Who’s Who. And, in a conclusion that surely would have pleased Freud, the findings suggest that the warmth of your relationship with Mommy matters long into adulthood. Specifically: Men who had “warm” childhood relationships with their mothers earned an average of $87,000 more a year than men whose mothers were uncaring. Men who had poor childhood relationships with their mothers were much more likely to develop dementia when old. Late in their professional lives, the men’s boyhood relationships with their mothers—but not with their fathers—were associated with effectiveness at work. On the other hand, warm childhood relations with fathers correlated with lower rates of adult anxiety, greater enjoyment of vacations, and increased “life satisfaction” at age 75—whereas the warmth of childhood relationships with mothers had no significant bearing on life satisfaction at 75. Vaillant’s key takeaway, in his own words: “The seventy-five years and twenty million dollars expended on the Grant Study points … to a straightforward five-word conclusion: ‘Happiness is love. Full stop.’ ” cuddled from businessinsider http://blogsinbrief..com/2013/04/what-it-takes-to-live-happy-life.html |
