In June 2009, The Atlantic published a cover story on the Grant Study, one of the longest-running longitudinal studies of human development.

The project, which began in 1938, has followed 268 Harvard undergraduate men for 75 years, measuring an astonishing range of psychological, anthropological, and physical traits—from personality type to IQ to drinking habits to family relationships to “hanging length of his scrotum”—in an effort to determine what factors contribute most strongly to human flourishing.

Recently, George Vaillant, who directed the study for more than three decades, published Triumphs of Experience, a summation of the insights the study has yielded. Among them:
“Alcoholism is a disorder of great destructive power.” Alcoholism was the main cause of divorce between the Grant Study men and their wives; it was strongly correlated with neurosis and depression (which tended to follow alcohol abuse, rather than precede it); and—together with associated cigarette smoking—it was the single greatest contributor to their early morbidity and death. Above a certain level, intelligence doesn't matter.

There was no significant difference in maximum income earned by men with IQs in the 110–115 range and men with IQs higher than 150. Aging liberals have more sex. Political ideology had no bearing on life satisfaction—but the most-conservative men ceased sexual relations at an average age of 68, while the most-liberal men had active sex lives into their 80s. “I have consulted urologists about this,” Vaillant writes. “They have no idea why it might be so.”

But the factor Vaillant returns to most insistently is the powerful correlation between the warmth of your relationships and your health and happiness in old age. After The Atlantic’s 2009 article was published, critics questioned the strength of this correlation. Vaillant revisited the data he had been studying since the 1960s for his book, an experience that further convinced him that what matters most in life are relationships.

For instance, the 58 men who scored highest on measurements of “warm relationships” earned an average of $141,000 a year more at their peak salaries (usually between ages 55 and 60) than the 31 men who scored lowest; the former were also three times more likely to have achieved professional success worthy of inclusion in Who’s Who.

And, in a conclusion that surely would have pleased Freud, the findings suggest that the warmth of your relationship with Mommy matters long into adulthood. Specifically:

Men who had “warm” childhood relationships with their mothers earned an average of $87,000 more a year than men whose mothers were uncaring.

Men who had poor childhood relationships with their mothers were much more likely to develop dementia when old.
Late in their professional lives, the men’s boyhood relationships with their mothers—but not with their fathers—were associated with effectiveness at work.

On the other hand, warm childhood relations with fathers correlated with lower rates of adult anxiety, greater enjoyment of vacations, and increased “life satisfaction” at age 75—whereas the warmth of childhood relationships with mothers had no significant bearing on life satisfaction at 75.

Vaillant’s key takeaway, in his own words: “The seventy-five years and twenty million dollars expended on the Grant Study points … to a straightforward five-word conclusion: ‘Happiness is love. Full stop.’ ”

Andressa Urach (picture above) had claimed the Real Madrid striker slept with her in a hotel just 48 hours before a key Champions League semi final which his team lost 4-1 to German side Borussia Dortmund.

The 27-year-old told The Sun: 'I have always thought Cristiano is one of the most gorgeous men in the world, so I couldn't believe it when he got in touch with me.

'He said he was very excited by my pictures online and one of the first things he asked me was if I really was a Miss Butt Brazil model.'

But Ronaldo said in a statement on Twitter last night: ‘I was informed that The Sun, faithful to its editorial line, will publish an article where is given voice to a so called Andressa - someone seeking the limelight on my account.

‘And I wonder why this happens one day before a very important game for my team. Deeply outraged by a situation intended, in vain, to affect my personal life.
‘I just want to clarify I was in fact at the Hotel Villa Magna on April 22 giving an interview to Manu Sainz, something the reporter himself is able to corroborate. Everything else is pure fiction and forgery.'

German school children as young as five were given a sex-education book giving graphic advice on how to put on a condom and how to achieve orgasms.

Outraged parents complained when youngsters at a school in Berlin were given the book, called 'Where Do You Come From?', which features explicit cartoon depictions of sex.

The book, which shows a couple called Lisa and Lars engaging in various of stages of intercourse, shows Lisa putting a condom on Lars and another image of the pair having sex.

“A soldier was beheaded by terrorists who took cover in the community after the dastardly act. At another time soldiers were ambushed by the insurgents during which a soldier was killed and the terrorists were shielded by members of the community. –Brigadier General Austin Edokpaye, Commander of the MJTF.

About five days after the military sacked Baga community on the Nigerian border with Chad, Niger and Cameroun, the army has given details of reasons behind the military operation.

Speaking on Wednesday, Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force, Brigadier-General Austin Edokpayi, said the operation was necessary because the Baga Community was increasingly becoming a safe haven for militants who were attacking the MJTF at will and escaping into the comminity.

He said during one of such provocations in the past, a soldier was beheaded in the town by the terrorists who took cover in the community after the dastardly act.

He equally said at another time, soldiers were ambushed by the insurgents during which a soldier was killed and the terrorists were shielded by the members of the community.

Edokpayi said though the terrorists have always come to Baga to tax the people of the town, no formal complaint have been brought to his men even as the residents of the town continue to shield the sect members.

The commander said that the military had intelligence report of the weekend attack on soldiers and when the people of the town were approached for assistance it never came.

He said: “The terrorists have been taxing the people for so long and we have had information that they were prepared to attack us an information which we confronted the people with but they denied.”

Edokpaye, who claimed that the weekend conflagration was never the making of the military but rather due to the weapon deployed by the insurgents, said the military was at no time unprofessional in it’s task in the area.Residents of Baga in Kukawa Local Government area of Borno,where over 185 persons were reportedly killed in the deadly confrontation at the weekend between the Boko Haram sect members and soldiers of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) are in search of their relatives who have gone missing.

The search for the missing residents of the commercial town which borders Niger, Chad and Cameroon continues just as a large part of it has been cordoned off by the military which has made movement within and outside the town difficult.

The military authority has also disclosed that many of the insurgents who attacked the soldiers during the deadly clash have been arrested and in custody.

It was also gathered from the town that searches were on as of yesterday for some of the insurgents as there was house to house search for the fleeing members of the sect.

The commander of the MJTF, Brig. Gen. Austin Edokpaye said his men have arrested a substantial number of the people who led the attack.

Edokpaye claimed that the soldiers have exercised restraint for so long under intense provocation from the insurgents and that last weekend clash was highly provoked.

TV reporter Chen Ying was just about to take her nuptials when a massive earthquake, which has so for far claimed more than 150 lives, struck in southern China.

But instead of panicking, her journalistic instincts kicked in and she got straight to work on reporting from the scene.

With no time to ditch her bridal gown and veil, the intrepid reporter grabbed a mic and began describing the scene in the province of Sichuan.

More than 5,500 people are reported to have been injured in the earthquake which struck mountainous Lushan county shortly after 8am this morning local time, and 19 people have been reported missing in the wake of the tremor.

The remains of the late renowned author, Prof. Chinua Achebe, will be buried on May 23, 2013 Gov. Peter Obi, Chairman of the South East Governor’s Forum, has said.

Addressing newsmen on Sunday in Enugu at the end of the forum’s meeting, Mr. Obi said the burial would hold in Ogidi town, Anambra State, and would be attended by stakeholders from across the globe.
He said the forum also discussed the issue of security in the zone as well as the flag off of the Enugu International Airport by President Jonathan.

“This afternoon, we talked about issues that are important to the South-East among which are Enugu International Airport, security issues and, again, the issue of Achebe’s burial.
“We wish to announce that the burial will take place on May 23; his first son is here with us.
“Enugu Airport is an international airport and we discussed early visit of the President to flag off construction,” he said.

In an interview, the late Achebe’s first son, Ikechukwu Achebe, commended the Federal Government and the South East governors for their commitment to the burial plan.
“Our father was a wonderful family man. Although he was a global citizen, he was always a good husband and father.
“The South East governors have indicated that the burial of my father is an important event; we are looking forward to working and consulting with them.
“So far, we have had tremendous support,’’ he said.

The meeting was attended by Govs Theodore Orji of Abia, Martin Elechi of Ebonyi, Sullivan Chime of Enugu and the deputy governor of Imo, Eze Madumere.

NASTY SCENES erupted at the Supreme Court in Accra on Thursday morning when two top officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP), nearly traded punches over voodoo known in local parlance as ‘juju.’

Anita De Souza, the NDC National Women’s Organizer, openly hurled a barrage of insults at Stephen Amoah aka ‘Sticker’ on suspicions that the NPP member had tried using ‘juju’ against her and the NDC.

The said incident happened in the court room where the NPP is contesting the results of the 2012 presidential polls, a few minutes before proceeding got underway.

It was the day Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the second petitioner, was cross-examined by President John Mahama’s lawyer, Tony Lithur.

The open outbursts of Anita attracted the attention of other people in court, DAILY GUIDE learnt.

The NDC top official said Sticker had tried rubbing a substance suspected to be ‘juju’ on her chair in the court room, but she was quick to detect it.

However, Sticker vehemently denied the accusation.

Anita De Souza, in an interview with Kofi Asante of Nhyira FM in Kumasi, said Stephen Amoah intentionally sat on her (Anita’s) seat in the court room for ‘juju’ purposes.

She claimed she saw Sticker murmuring some words as he sat on her chair, so she confronted the NPP man, asking why he decided to sit on her chair and what he was about to do.

Juju vrs Prayers

Anita De Souza claimed Sticker begged her when she confronted him, sternly warning the NPP and Sticker not to try their ‘juju’ practices on her since it would not work.

She claimed the NPP was counting on ‘juju’ to win the case, and that the NDC was being guided by fervent prayers; therefore NPP’s attempt to use ‘juju’ against the NDC in the petition would come to naught.

She said Sticker always visited the court so he was aware the seat belonged to her (Anita) yet he sat on it for obvious reasons.

But in a sharp rebuttal, Stephen Amoah, a staunch Christian who worships with the Calvary Charismatic Centre (CCC) in Kumasi, vehemently denied visiting the court with any ‘juju’ substance.

Anita’s Chair

Telling his side of the story, he said it was his first visit to the Supreme Court since the case started, adding that he did not know that the seat in contention belonged to Anita as she was claiming.

Mr Amoah said he was heading towards the place allocated for the NPP when a leading member of the NDC called him for a short conversation.

He said he sat on the chair which Anita claimed belonged to her for a few minutes, as he chatted with the NDC man.

Minutes after he had left and went to occupy his seat at the place allocated for the NPP, an angry-looking Anita approached him and started insulting him for sitting on her chair.

Sticker said Anita only complained about his decision to sit on her chair, noting that the NDC Women’s Organizer did not say anything about ‘juju’ in the court room.

He said he did not reply harshly to Anita’s outbursts in the court room.

The NPP activist said in an interview with DAILY GUIDE that he apologized to Anita for sitting on her chair for peace to prevail, adding that he was utterly shocked about Anita suddenly accusing him of engaging in ‘juju.’

Sticker said what happened in court was not serious enough to generate even a debate between him and Anita.

He suspected the NDC and Anita were aware they would lose the case, so they wanted to create chaotic scenes in court to disrupt proceedings.

He told the NDC and Anita in particular that their ploy of causing agitation in court to disrupt the smooth flow of proceedings had been uncovered by the NPP so they would never fall prey to it.

Amoah said after 10 years in active politics, he was experienced enough to detect a trap being set by his political opponents, noting that Anita’s wish was for him to also respond harshly to her barrage of insults “but I detected it so her conspiracy failed woefully.”
