-APC governors adopt Tinubu as sole candidate for 2027 presidential poll.
-Ondo governor leads charge, seeks replacement of senators, reps
-PGF to meet Tinubu
Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are scheming to get their pound of flesh from senators and members of the House of Representatives for what many of them consider a betrayal with respect to recent amendments to the Electoral Act and other sundry infractions.
Sunday Vanguard gathered, in Abuja, that the Cold War between APC governors and federal lawmakers from their respective states highlighted over the weekend following President Bola Tinubu’s hint that he would wish to see the return of all of the party’s federal lawmakers to the National Assembly.
Tinubu had, at an interfaith breaking of fast with members of the House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, at the State House, hinted on returning majority of the federal lawmakers except areas where there are rotational and zoning arrangements.
The president, while commending the Speaker who earlier canvassed for the return of lawmakers to the 11th Assembly, said, “I appreciate the impressive turnout, and this shows the spirit of unity. You spoke very well as a team leader; you are a very good leader.
“I am very happy with the representation I see here tonight, which reflects your consciousness and the richness of your leadership. I thank you for speaking so well. I will do everything within our party’s power. In several constituencies, there are rotational arrangements. I wish that everyone would return.”
Abbas equally expressed gratitude to Tinubu for continuing the tradition of hosting members for the breaking of fast, noting that the coincidence of Ramadan and Lent this year was very significant and unique.
This came as he sought the President’s support for the return of members, lamenting that when up to 80 percent of National Assembly members do not return after elections, it undermines legislative continuity, as new members must undergo lengthy learning processes.
Uncomfortable with what a party insider described as the “unusual declaration”, the governors under the umbrella of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) “will, baring any last minute changes meet Tinubu before he departs to the United Kingdom next week.”
The high ranking source sympathetic to one of the governors said, “It’s an unusual declaration that caught the governors unawares and they are to meet him possibly before he leaves for the UK next week.”
The source also confided in Sunday Vanguard that the governors are scheduled to meet a day prior to their planned meeting with the president. Top on the agenda is an agreement on possible concessions to be extracted from the president. Details of the concessions are still being worked out, said the source.
The situation is, however, not universal as governors-especially those seeking second term-are battling to replace a majority federal lawmakers with loyalists as part of a larger scheme to control the 11th National Assembly.
Those familiar with the development confided in Sunday Vanguard that the battle of wits started roughly ten months ago but got to its turning point when the PGF tipped their Chairman and Imo State governor, Hope Uzodimma, to replace Senator Godswill Akpabio as the next Senate President about one week ago.
In what appears to be a unique case, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is said to be seeking the replacement of all of Ondo State three senators as well as at least seven out of the nine members of the House of Representatives.
Although the governor and the federal lawmakers have all, at different forums, denied the existence of a row, a credible source said: “It is not out of place for governors to have loyalists in the National Assembly”.
Aiyedatiwa’s grouse against federal lawmakers from his state is said to be their refusal to accede to his overtures to present a common memorandum seeking to amend Section 182 (3) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended) to allow for a fresh term in office.
Section 182 (3) stipulates:
“A person who was sworn-in as Governor to complete the term for which another person was elected as Governor shall not be elected to such office for more than a single term”.
One of the federal lawmakers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the governor met six of them to initiate the amendment process.
According to the source, “It is an open secret that the Governor wants to have third oath of office which is against the letter and spirit of the Constitution as it is today.
“He invited six of us to a meeting on the need for us to initiate the process through a joint memorandum but we were unanimous that such was an uphill task except it is decided by the courts.
“Basically, we warned him not to attempt it because it would not fly; and apart from that, we hinted him that (Ex-President Goodluck) Jonathan would benefit from such an amendment if it succeeds but rather than showing understanding, he threatened that we will all lose our tickets to return to the National Assembly.”
Someone who husband once acknowledged the same orgy in the time past? Perhaps playing politics with lives being lost.
It is just repugnant to think that these kinds of people are called pastors in a country of particular concern wherein Christians are the most targets of systemic jihadists annihilation. God is still on the throne.
It's worst than what is being reported. Over 89% of the killings don't find their way to the media. We can't continue like this. Nigeria needs external help because the government has shown it can't deal with this scourge.
One of the most dangerous places for Christians worldwide is Nigeria. More than a decade of deadly violence has drawn international scrutiny, prompted U.S. military action, and fueled debate over whether Africa's most populous nation is facing genocide.
In an exclusive interview with CBN News, Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, pushed back on claims that Christians are being systematically exterminated.
"I don't think so," Tinubu offered repeatedly when asked whether genocide is taking place. Instead, she described the violence as rooted in long-standing regional conflicts, poverty, terrorism, and political instability — particularly as the country approaches an election year in 2027.
"When you have terrorists and people kidnapping for money, and when the world is throwing in a narrative that is Christian genocide, {terrorists} will have hit on that and begin to attack churches," she said.
What's the truth about this complex crisis? Christians are disproportionately targeted. If they're not killed, they are kidnapped for ransom, lose their homes, farmland, and churches, and in some cases, women and young girls are forced into marrying their captors.
Her comments reflect the complexities of a nation divided largely between a Muslim-majority north and predominantly Christian south.
Critics argue that while thousands of Muslims have also been killed in large numbers, Christians are disproportionately targeted. If they're not killed, they are kidnapped for ransom, lose their homes, farmland, and churches, and in some cases women and young girls are forced into marrying their captors.
More than 70 percent of Christians killed worldwide in recent years have died in Nigeria, according to Open Doors...
Even Tinubu herself has faced threats. An ordained Pentecostal pastor married to President Bola Tinubu, a Muslim, she recounted how a cleric once publicly suggested she should be stoned.
"There was a Muslim cleric that said I'm a heathen," she explained. "Most of the people who spoke up for me are from the North," Tinubu continued, suggesting that religious divisions are often more nuanced than portrayed.
Despite rejecting the genocide label, Tinubu welcomed U.S. intervention. She thanked President Trump for the missile strikes carried out against terrorist holdouts on Christmas Day.
"We thank President Trump for what he did for us," Tinubu told CBN News. "This {was} the first Christmas that no one was attacked," she said, echoing responses from Nigeria's Christian leaders.
Her husband's administration has since authorized expanded joint military operations, increased intelligence sharing with the United States, and announced plans to recruit 20,000 additional police and security personnel to combat terrorism.
But critics remain skeptical. With tens of thousands of lives claimed and millions displaced, they charge these latest moves come too late and at too high of a cost.
During her trip to Washington in early February, the First Lady embarked on what some observers described as a diplomatic "charm offensive," promoting trade and strengthening U.S.-Nigeria relations. President Trump publicly recognized her at the National Prayer Breakfast, calling her "very respected" and praising Tinubu as both a national leader and Christian pastor.
At home, Tinubu points to her nearly 40-year interfaith marriage as a model for coexistence in a divided nation. "If I'm going to enjoy my marriage, Jesus has to come in and give me that peace," she said. "My husband is a good man."
A former senator, educator, author, and podcast host, Tinubu says her mission is rooted in faith — rebuilding what she calls "the broken walls" of her country through youth engagement, education, and women's health initiatives.
Still, the ongoing violence in Nigeria leaves many to question whether Nigerian government officials can stem years of bloodshed and convince both its citizens and the international community that they are prepared to seriously combat terrorism and religious violence. For many families displaced and grieving, the answer cannot come soon enough.
Then the country must be divided so that you have your Sharia and practice as you want. Imagine Zamfara, and other northern state govern by Sharia today.
Denying Christian genocide is one of the worst inhumanity ever seen with mankind given what the religion of bloodshed and violence has done to the world.
Quiet late! That senseless statement is going to hunt him for life. Seyi Law is always talking before thinking typical of anything APC just to defend senselessness.
What do you expect when even the law is also the crime? These are the judges frolicking with corrupt politicians adjucating on legal matters in one of the highest court of the land
