Turkish government is planning to employ religious school graduates as kindergarten teachers. Turkey’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) increased the number of Islamic education oriented Imam Hatip High Schools fivefold since 2002 and employed most of the graduates as imams. But as the positions of imams are full the Turkish state is seeking to employ imams in different ways. Now employing imams as kindergarten teachers is on the agenda. A private kindergarten administrator in Diyarbakir said, on the condition of anonymity, that the local education officials negotiated with the owners of kindergartens about employing imams as contract teachers. The officials also met with the families of children and forced them to sign a petition to force the kindergartens open a position for a religion teacher. Officials from the National Education Board threatened some kindergarten owners who refused to employ imams with not renewing their licences. Source 24hoursreporter |
The controversial Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose who had earlier revealed his intention of contesting for President of Nigeria in 2019, told news men what he will do to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC when he finally becomes the President of Nigeria. He described the agency as an organization that has been wrongly structured making it “senseless”. The Governor said he will overhaul the anti-graft agency. “By the grace of God, I will restructure the EFCC when I become the president of this nation. I will reorganize EFCC and make it looks responsible. “They detained me in 2008, but I won them in court, because the most high God was on my side. “EFCC is senseless body, because if they are not senseless, it should have known that the man who wrote the petition had been sacked because he didn’t deserve to be called a civil servant. The arrest of my officials was orchestrated by Ekiti indigenes in collaboration with the EFCC. “I will never go and beg EFCC, it will rather beg me. I won’t negotiate anything because I am not afraid of them. There was a subsisting court that barred them from arresting any official of this state, but they breached the law”, he said. He said this on Thursday during a grand reception organised for his aides who were arrested by the EFCC. Check 24hoursreporter for the full story. |

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC has raised called out for a solution to the alarming rate of malpractice among students. According to the Examination body, students are so desperate about malpractice that they go to the extent of drugging invigilators using dangerous chemicals. According to the council’s Registrar, Iyi Uwadiae, who spoke during a press briefing at WAEC International Centre, Lagos, proposed international summit on examination malpractices for October 19 and 20. He said: “In some cases, and particularly during private examinations, candidates now go to centres fully armed with guns and other weapons. For the public examinations, there are centres, and especially private schools, where invigilators are drugged to pave way for them to engage in exam malpractices.” In his statement, “waging war against examination malpractices has become very expensive and more difficult, particularly with the advent of social media. The most notorious challenge facing examining bodies and other educational institutions in WAEC member-countries is examination malpractice. Currently, the malaise has assumed dangerous and criminal dimensions on the heels of some advancements in technology, which created the smartphones, social media, among others. The council, in the five member countries, has introduced several measures, adopted various strategies and deployed technologies at great costs in the fight against the ever-festering menace. Misguided candidates and their adult collaborators, sometimes including school authorities, teachers, parents and, most recently, operators of rogue websites, have continued to devise ingenious and sophisticated methods of cheating, leading to an exponential increase in reported cases of fraud in public examinations”. Fast-moving wildfires raged across several counties in Northern California overnight, forcing the evacuation of at least two hospitals and numerous neighborhoods early Monday, the authorities said. Firefighters were battling blazes in eight counties — Napa, Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino, Yuba, Nevada, Calaveras and Butte — officials said. Janet Upton, a deputy director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said that at least 14 fires had destroyed an estimated 1,500 residential and commercial structures and had burned over 57,000 acres since late Sunday night. Thousands had been evacuated, she said. Gov. Jerry Brown issued an emergency proclamation for Napa, Sonoma and Yuba Counties, saying the fires had damaged critical infrastructure and threatened thousands of homes. “This is really serious, it’s moving fast. The heat, the lack of humidity and the winds are all driving a very dangerous situation and making it worse,” the governor said at a morning press conference. “It’s not under control by any means. But we’re on it in the best way we know how.” Ms. Upton said that there had been reports of injuries and residents unaccounted for. Asked whether any deaths had been reported, she said that she did not have an estimate but that, “we do fear the worst.” The fires began at about 10 p.m. and were fanned by wind gusts moving faster than 50 miles an hour, Ms. Upton said. The worst fires in Northern California tend to hit in October, when dry conditions prime them to spread fast and far as heavy winds, known as north winds or diablo winds, buffet the region. Ms. Upton said that conditions were critically dry, given the lack of moisture in the air and the buildup of grass, brush and trees. “Combined, that’s a recipe for disaster,” she said. Smoke billowed into the Bay Area, but the Marin County Fire Department reported that there were no separate fires in the area. Reports suggested that residents in the region were caught unawares, many of them fleeing the area in cars and on foot as firefighters rushed to contain the outbreak. A number of roadways, including highways, were blocked by a fire. Neighborhoods in Santa Rosa, the county seat of Sonoma, were evacuated, according to the city manager, who said the Kaiser Permanente and Sutter hospitals were being cleared out. Lisa Kaldunski, an operator at Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital, said around 6:30 a.m. local time that the facility was being evacuated and that patients were being taken to other area hospitals. Marc Brown, a spokesman for Kaiser Permanente, said about 130 patients had been evacuated from the Santa Rosa medical center because of the fires. The Lake and Mendocino County sheriffs’ offices ordered evacuations. The Butte County sheriff announced that there were two fires in the area and listed neighborhoods where evacuation was mandatory. Belia Ramos, the chairwoman of the Napa County board of supervisors, said the county was dealing with three main fires. One has threatened more than 10,000 acres in northern Napa County, another has endangered 8,000 to 12,000 acres, and a third has affected about 2,000 acres, she said. Ms. Ramos said the fires were moving quickly and unpredictably. She said she did not know how many people had been evacuated early Monday, but added that the areas being evacuated were large and densely populated. “Certainly we know that the numbers are high,” she said. “As day breaks and we get a better handle on this situation, we’ll be able to update those numbers.” California was hit by fires throughout the summer. Late last month, several blazes led to the evacuation of about 1,000 people in Southern California. “I’ve been with the department for 31 years and some years are notorious and they’re burned in your memory,” Ms. Upton said. “I’m afraid that 2017 is going to be added to that list now.” Check 24hoursreporter for images of the wildfires. |

The act of terrorism can be described in its broadest sense to be an intentionally indiscriminate violence with a view to creating fear, terror and to achieve political, religious or ideological aim. Terrorism in this regardrefers to war against non-combatants or violence against peacetime targets. The origin of the terms terrorist and terrorism dates back to the French revolution of the late 18th century. However, it gained popularity between 1981 to 1989 during the U.S presidency of Ronald Reagan immediately after the 1983 Beirut barracks bombings and the attacks on Washington D. C in September 2001. It should be noted that there is no commonly accepted definition of the term terrorism; it is often used both by governments and non-state groups to denounce or abuse opposing groups, thereby furthering their objectives such as right-wing and left-wing political organizations, religious groups, nationalist groups, revolutionaries and ruling governments. Parliamentary legislations in so many countries relating to terrorism have been adopted as crime against humanity. However, there is no universal agreement whether or not terrorism should be regarded as a war crime. Read full article on 24hoursreporter |

Despite the fact that Bush meat consumption has been identified as one of the major causes of money pox, consumers of bush meat in Bayelsa still consume bush meat without fear. The disease was reported a forthnight ago and has affected at least 13 people in the state, according to Prof Ebitimitula Etebu, Bayelsa State Commissioner of Health. Etebu, who said the situation was under control, urged residents to be vigilant and wash hands after contact with wild animals who are the primary vectors for the monkeypox virus. The citizens were also warned against eating bush meat, a delicacy to many people in the state, as it is suspected to be one of the sources of contracting the disease. However, some of the residents, who spoke to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the advice from medical experts to curb spread of the virus, urged the government to lay emphasis on hygiene and not to blacklist bush meat. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) investigations in Yenagoa and Ogbia areas in Bayelsa yesterday indicated that business was still thriving at bush meat joints and restaurants that served the delicacy. Some of the restaurants in Yenagoa and Otuoke that serve bush meat which were visited were found to still be enjoying patronage despite warning from health officials. check 24hoursreporter! for full story |
