The Barcelona defender says he has reached an agreement with Spanish authorities over alleged unpaid taxes and blamed those who poorly advised him for the mess
Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano has released a statement in which he says he has reached an agreement with Spanish authorities concerning charges of tax fraud.

The Argentina international appeared in court in an effort to avoid a custodial sentence being handed down as a result of two counts of tax evasion.

Mascherano had failed to declare earnings in 2011 and 2012 which amounted to €1.5million.

Reports emerged in Spain earlier on Thursday to suggest that Mascherano had been handed a year in prison and a significant fine, but the former Liverpool man says an agreement has been reached with the Treasury which gives him "peace of mind".

He has also suggested he could pursue legal action himself against the firm which he claims gave him poor advice and which led to the case being opened.

An official statement from Mascherano, published on Barcelona's website, read: "I want to clarify some issues related to recent news about myself.

"As of today, I have reached an agreement with the Spanish tax authorities. As such, with the legal side resolved and with the confidence of having sorted my financial situation, I want to issue a short explanation.
"After agreeing to come to Barcelona, I hired a prestigious Spanish tax firm, with renowned professionals and an excellent reputation. In agreement with my situation, they recommended certain structures to me, all within the legal framework, always notifying me that the procedures were common, transparent and in accordance with the law.

"I was advised by said professionals from the year 2010 until 2014, when I decided to change firms before the process was opened against me and with evidence that my problem was no longer a possibility but a reality.

"My new advisors recommended I pay the taxes demanded by the Treasury, presenting what they called 'corrections'.

"Now, finally and following a bitter delay, we have reached this agreement, which restores to me the peace of mind of having fulfilled my obligations.

"I'm a professional sportsman, I don't have huge knowledge of tax or legal matters. As such, I lean on the people who handle these technical and, for me, complex terms.

"Throughout my career I've been an honest and responsible person, respecting my team-mates, the clubs for whom I have played and the countries where I have chosen to live.

"This situation I've had to go through has given me greater experience, from which I move on stronger and relaxed as I knew things were back in order.

"I reserve the possibility of taking action against those who made incorrect assessments and recommended things to me that were not correct."

Gazetta dello Sport claims Yusupha Yaffa lied to Italian authorities upon arriving from Gambia in 2009, insisting he was 13 years old when he was actually 22
AC Milan is taking former academy player Yusupha Yaffa to court following allegations he told the club he was nine years younger than his real age.

Yaffa arrived in Italy in 2009 seeking asylum from Gambia and, according to Gazetta dello Sport, lost his identity papers and claimed his age was 13, when his actual age is said to have been 22.

A move to the Milan academy followed in 2013 when he was presumed to be 16 years old with a birthday of December 31, 1997, but an investigation puts his real birthday as February 14, 1987.

Neymar has been ordered to appear in court next month as the transfer which took him from Santos to Barcelona remains in the spotlight.

Judge Jose de la Mata has requested his presence on February 2 to give evidence regarding the fraud and corruption charges relating to the 2013 move.

Current Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu will also appear in court, albeit one day earlier than Neymar, as will the Catalan club’s former president Sandro Rosell, who stepped down from his role over the transfer.

Proceedings centre on claims from Brazilian investment fund DIS that they should have received a higher portion of the original fee than they did.

Barring a huge surprise, Lionel Messi will win the Ballon d'Or for a fifth time Monday. The Argentine attacker has missed out on the honor to Cristiano Ronaldo in the last two editions, but is now preparing to reclaim his prize - and it could be his for the foreseeable future.

Between the two of them, Messi and Ronaldo have won the Ballon d'0r for the past seven years: Leo in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012; Cristiano in 2008, 2013 and 2014.

And in his winning speech in Switzerland a year ago, the Portuguese attacker said he was keen to catch Messi and also go down as the finest player in the history of the game.

Juventus star Paul Pogba has been named in the 2015 FIFA FIFPro World XI,Goal can confirm.

It is a debut appearance for the French midfielder in the best team of the year as voted for by professional footballers from around the world.

The full team will be revealed at the 2015 Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich on Monday evening, but Goal’s sources in Italy have learned that Juventus have been requested to send Pogba to Switzerland to collect his award.

The 22-year-old earned his place in the ultimate XI after a magnificent 2014-15 season in which he helped lead Juventus to the domestic double and the final of the Champions League – scoring 10 goals in all competitions.

FIFPro is the worldwide representative organisation for all professional footballers; more than 65,000 players in total, male and female.

Each professional is granted a vote for the FIFA FIFPro World XI, which has been chosen annually since 2005. The final XI is arranged in a 4-3-3 formation.

former military governor of Kaduna State and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Jafaru Isa, has refunded N100million of the N170 million he allegedly received from embattled ex-NSA, Sambo Dasuki.


Mr. Isa, a retired brigadier-general, was arrested on Wednesday by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, at his Asokoro residence in Abuja.

Mr. Isa, a political associate of President Muhammadu Buhari, was grilled for several hours in connection with about N170 million he received from Mr. Dasuki.

A reliable source familiar with the matter told PREMIUM TIMES the APC chieftain and member of the 19-man Buhari Transition Committee was released after refunding N100million to the anti-graft commission.

The source said Mr. Isa pledged to return the remaining N70million soon.

“We let him go after returning the sum of N100million. We are expecting him to return the rest soon,” the source said.

According to him, some of the suspected recipients of the slush funds who claimed they had no idea the money sent to them was taken from the public till were handed opportunities to return what they got from the former NSA but refused.

“We offered them the chance of returning the money honorably but they keep deploying tactics to avoid prosecution, while also going away with the loot,” he said.

A close associate of Mr. Isa told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Dasuki lodged over N100 million into Mr. Isa’s account in instalments to buy a house, located on Mohammed Mohammed Avenue, Kano, for the former NSA.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that deposits were in turn made by Mr. Isa to the owner of the house, Ali Tukur, in two instalments.

However, the house purchase deal collapsed as a former Minister of Finance, Yarima Ngama, reportedly offered to pay the sum of N150 million cash when Mr. Dasuki reneged on the payment agreement.

Those familiar with their relationship say Messrs. Isa and Dasuki have been close friends since their cadet days at the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) and had spent four years together while on military training in the United States.

The Peoples Democratic Party had on Sunday protested the release of Mr. Isa barely eight hours after his arrest while its own spokesperson, Olisa Metuh, remained detained.
