My day? You dont wanna know. Missed the chopper from Kutum to El Fasher. Will book again tomorrow, if there's no sandstorm. Have to be in Nairobi by weekend. (Work in Darfur, by the way) |
I think it is wrong to conclude that this question is lame/dumb. In case you have forgotten, this is Nairaland and so most threads will be dominated by trends and social norms in Nigeria. Inasmuch as women have gradually become freer in Nigeria, one cannot rule out the fact that social standards in at least 60% of the homes in Nigeria give the man (husband) a dominant say. Consequently, he can 'allow' or 'disallow' his wife from doing some things. I believe it is in this context that the question was asked. However, many homes are liberal enough to debate this issue and come to a compromise. |
@Greatpeter has just given us a reality check. I agree with him that many of the replies to this exciting thread are too idealistic. Check out the employment trend in Nigeria today for graduates. What is the average graduate's pay? Not the Shell worker, not the Globacom 'big boy'. Maybe 40,000 naira monthly? How many of our ladies can accept the average graduate as a 'successful' guy? It is only when issues like these are addressed that we can be said to be realistic. |
I think part of the furore over Stella's case is the fact that her late husband's family is very rich(they own Punch newspaper). They believe she married him for money and now he's dead, she's frolicking around. I feel she should have remembered that she still bears their family name and so, strike a balance between her career as a star and her family (nuclear or extended). |
Boy this is a lesson in life, when you're dealing with people whose horizon is very short. It happened to me- I had just bought my first car , we were going to the beach in a convoy with my friends then she comes down from my car, complaining that it didnt have air conditioning, and went into another guy's car cos he was 'opppressing' at the time with his father's new car. What happened- God blessed me. I bought a new car every year for the next 3 years, left the country twice, then came back and met her. Of course, I was on a different level. She tried to come back, but I rebuffed her. My advice- do the same. |
This is a real story that happened within my circle of friends: Scenario - My friend, Guy A, is a very gentle and cool guy, while Guy B is a gangster type rough guy. Both are good friends from the same tribe and area. Guy B has a very beautiful girlfriend who is also gentle and caring. But being the player Guy B is, he dumps her as he usually does to his girlfriends. Guy A doesnt waste time, he moves in and asks the girl out and within months he proposes. They are married now. Did Guy A stab Guy B in the back, since he was 'waiting in the wings'? If faced with similr situation what would you do? Can you marry your friend's ex? |
are u sure? ![]() |
Be careful u could lose him. Dont come crying back to this forum!! |
Yes,@SEUN I feel so too. Many of their stories dont make deductions but are merely allegations. |
@SEUN, I must commend Seun for creating and effectively managing the Nairaland Forum. @PAPERMOON, She always posts very frank contributions to the house |
Rules of Engagement (ROE) are issued to troops deployed on military operations based on the political considerations for the conduct of such operations. The Rules basically seek to escalate the situation, maintain the status quo or de-escalate the situation. Prior to the compilation of ROE, a proper intelligence assessment would have been conducted to ascertain the workability of the ROE in such situation. The Rules include the inherent right of self defence to include the lives of non combatants and protection of mission essential equipment. They are issued to the troops to be deployed during the orders briefing for that exercise. I try abi!!! |
Those guys at Elendu Reports need to really draw the line between investigative journalism and trespass. Just look at the embarrassment they caused the Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Their publication was apparently to expose Nigerian public officials who had houses in posh areas in America. However, they failed to state that she bought the house about 10 years before joining the Nigerian government and that her family has lived there since then. Despite efforts by some friends and family members to obtain an apology for this, the guys have refused to apologise. In fact, they have further lauched an onslaught on the Okonjo family. http://www.elendureports.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=58&Itemid=33 http://www.elendureports.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=84&Itemid=33 http://www.elendureports.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=85&Itemid=33 http://www.elendureports.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=157&Itemid=33 I think these guys are just 'sensational gangster-style' journalists. |
@PAPERMOON, I wish to state that I read all your posts last night and I have concluded that you are more BOLD, NATURAL, REALISTIC and INDEPENDENT than the average Nigerian lady of your age. It is no crime to express one's self and such expression is usually reflective of one's environment and/or upbringing. I'm ur fan!! and am not a grammarian (emi o gbo' yinbo)!!! |
@PAPERMOON please cool down |
Nigerians in Diaspora, this thread is for you. Many of you left Nigeria for various reasons - education, career enhancement, business etc. But the most common reason is the proverbial 'Golden Fleece'. If you were to attach a target of monetary value to this Golden Fleece, how much will make you return to Nigeria? How much money must you make before returning to Nigeria? |
Yes, Taylor should be in Monrovia as at the time of this post. Do you think Monrovia is ready for Taylor? I say no. He ia a bargaining tool for millions of dollars of aid. http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=44137 @demmy the points listed were in no particular order. The issue is not the points but the context. It is only then we can answer questions like 'was Nigeria guilty of his escape?'. By the way, why are so many Nigerians negative about anything Nigerian? |
I believe this forum has very intelligent members and so we should note the following facts before commenting: 1. Charles Taylor was imprisoned in the United States at the Plymouth County House of Correction from where he escaped in the 1980s AND NO ONE ACCUSED THE US OF ANYTHING. He was not caught in the US despite the tight securtiy and advanced technology. 2. The Agreement signed in Accra in 2003 was for Nigeria to hand Charles Taylor over to a democratically elected president in Liberia AND NOT ANY OTHER BODY. 3. The Special Court in Sierra Leone is UN sponsored but is not a UN body. Nigeria is not signatory to the Special Court in Sierra Leone. 4. The US is uptil now not signatory to the ICC and ICJ conventions of the UN. 5. Pres Sirleaf requested for Charles Taylor a day after returning from the US. 6. Nigeria terminated Taylor's asylum the next day, sending copies of the documents to Liberia's Ambassador in Abuja. 7. Pres Sirleaf, being a novice in Interantional politics, realizes the dangers of Taylor's return to Liberia and asks Nigeria to hand Taylor over to the Special Court. 8. Taylor capitalises on this lacuna to attempt to escape. You can now make your judgements. |
The Naija guys in this category include: Etim Esin-clubber/ had a sex case Celestine Babayaro- clubber/ had various sex cases Yakubu Aiyegbeni-clubber Dan Amokachi- stubborn Wilson Oruma - stubborn |
Its interesting that most of the negative remarks about these two comedians were posted by female Nairaland members, mainly those abroad. I would like to refer these sisters to Gary Coleman of the long-rested 'Different Strokes' soap and conclude that thses guys are just home grown versions of Gary. |
Both Bimbo AKintola and Genevieve Nnaji are celebrated actresses in Nollywood (the Nigerian home video industry). However, when it comes to comparison: a. Bimbo exudes experience, maturity, flexibility to be cast in various contrasting roles, and good diction. b. Genevieve is, in my opinion, more flashy and a product of better marketing. VERDICT: Bimbo Akintola is the better ACTRESS of the two |
4000 naira will buy 10 MTN 400 Naira vouchers from a NIPOST Post Office. These vouchers go for 450 naira each, so you make 50 naira per voucher sold and 500 naira for selling all the vouchers. My comment: go to a Post Office with the 4000 naira at 7am and buy the vouchers. Try and sell them all and return to the Post Office within working hours to buy another set. I wish you the best of luck. |
There are many websites that have the sole aim of combatting scams. In fact, becuase of the fact that there are so many of these websites, it has become very embarrassing to Nigeria's already battered image. Some of the 419ers are barely literate and always make blunders. Some of these websites and groups also try to outsmart the scammers: 419 COALITION, www.scambusters.org, www.scam419.com,www.scamorama.com (lads from Lagos), www.419eater.com, www.419fraud.com, www.crimes-of-persuasion.com, www.scambuster419.co.uk |
Generally, the Nigerian Stock Exchange is one of the most stable in the world. Some schools of thought claim the Exchange is deliberately stage managed to favour some powerful individuals. For example, ideally the introduction of Sharia law in some states post 1999, would have reduced the share prices of Guiness and Nigeria Breweries PLC. However, 1999 investors in those 2 companies have reaped at least 150% return on investment, showing that Sharia which actually reduced sales in some states, didnt affect the ROI. A friend in the US, who recently acquired an MBA from Wharton, took a loan of $100,000 in 2002 and invested it in the NSE. His investments are now worth about $380,000 at last count and he has paid about 70% of the loan, solely from the proceeds from Nigeria. Please once you have a good broker, I urge you to invest in the Stock Exchange. If you're not in Nigeria and/or you're not sure of a broker, check out IBTC, City Securities Limited, BGL, Greenwich Trust. WARNING- He knows the market, you need a broker who really knows the market. He also benefitted alot from the Public Offers that were floated between 2002-2005. |
