Computers / How To Remove VBS Redlof and VBS Soraci (Viruses) by ramono(m): 1:00pm On May 29, 2006
Need Help-vbs Redlof/vbs Soraci

I need help in removing VBS Redlof and VBS Soraci from my laptop. I have been frustarted by the slow reaction of my system since they were discovered. I have Norton 2005 and AVG, but they only detect the viruses and don't remove them. I've also done some online scans using Antivir but there doesnt seem to be much improvement.

I'm not too much of a computer whizkid, so I need advice before I do something funny. I just increased my virtual memory paging file from 576MB to 624MB.

Any advice

Business / Re: ATM in Nigeria by ramono(m): 10:52pm On May 25, 2006
Most of the ATMs in Nigeria are managed by a private firm known as Interswitch. This firm is currently running almost a monopoly, although the business is yet to solidify due to a few teething problems. Consequently, any prospective investor in this regard must bear this in mind.
Politics / Re: Why Are Nigerians Negative About Nigeria? by ramono(m): 9:37pm On May 22, 2006
Nigeria's problems-greed, corruption, fraud etc are all in the mind set. I also feel the solution to Nigeria's problem starts from the mindset. Positive thinking, determination, cooperation can take us along the way forward.

We cannot all move to the US or Europe for a better life. These nations are even tired of us-so why dont we look inwards?

The few changes in Nigeria now such as debt settlement and other reforms are a result of positive thinking, determination and cooperation.

I will not castigate the HSMP scheme but to state that the scheme is in fact a means of developing the human capacity of Nigerians who benefit from it. It absorbs people with skills required by the UK economy and markets. They will gain experience and exposure as well as benefiting from the high pound to naira ratio. One set of beneficiaries of the scheme we havent mentioned are the Kanus, Okochas , Babayaros, Yobos and Aiyegbenis, who are repatriating millions of pounds. These people also pay alot of tax to the British system.

I attended primary and tertiary education in the UK so I can tell you from various sides of the coin that its not fantastic to live there. I am against going into the scheme with the ultimate purpose of having a 'Stay', because this indicates a desire to remain permanently in the UK due to a total lack fo belief in the future of Nigeria.

The situation in Nigeria is bad. Only God can save Nigeria, but He will not send angels to do it. It is Nigerians like me and you he will use.
Politics / Why Are Nigerians Negative About Nigeria? by ramono(m): 9:32pm On May 19, 2006
Some time ago, my South African friends asked me why Nigerians are negative about their own country. Believe me, they proved it with examples and I really struggled to defend myself. They said despite the problems in their country, they couldnt be that negative about it.

But using this very forum as a case study, its unfortunate that many posts are indicative of this.

A trip to the market will entail comments like 'dont give me made in Nigeria o, na imported I want'.
The ports are full of imported scrap. Our youths are taking menial jobs in Europe under inhuman conditions.

What do u think is responsible for this? Are we a pessimistic bunch? Is Nigeria that bad?? Worse than the Asian countries? Do they moan so much?

Nairalanders, please comment.

Hello @Hsmpwise, I dont totally agree with your last comment.
Why should Britain become an extension of Nigeria?
Is that the prayer we should have for our country?
If people from all developing countries left their countries in droves, what would happen to their home countries?
Even though things may be bad in Nigeria, the only people that can change things ae we Nigerians. So the solution is not to flood England in droves, but to acquire the necessary education, experience and exposure to return and make Nigeria a better place.
Having lived in Britain for 8 years, and also having visited many countries, I would remind you that no matter how comfortable you may find these places, you have only one home- NIGERIA.

If this story is true, the wisest thing Sil should do is to collect his 2 million naira cash and move on with his life.

I had a colleague from the south east who was faced with a similar situation. He tried to prove the strong man and ended up the worse for it.

By the way, Sil, my consultancy fee is 20%!!!

@myname, thank you for posting this thread.

I have found myself in this situation and at the end of the day I lost the lady. She later confided in me that she wasnt happy in her marriage and wondered if only I had proposed to her. I couldnt bring myself to tell her that I felt the same.

Given another chance, I wouldnt miss it.

For my dividend mails, I opened a Post Office Box and a special interest yielding savings account. My younger brother in Nigeria has the keys to the P O Box and he clears the mail every 3 months. Then he pays the dividend warrants into the account.

I have a current account in Nigeria and also a stockbroking account with a Stockbroking firm. I just sign cheques from wherever I am home to be paid into the stockbroking account. Then I send an sms of email to my stockbroker instructing him what stock to buy. Usually, I follow business news online to know when an IPO will be out.

I started investing before I left Nigeria, so I got a grasp of it. I started with NGN3000,so you dont even need a million as many people think.
Family / Re: Rich Marrying Rich, Poor Marrying Poor: Way Forward? by ramono(m): 7:55pm On May 09, 2006
Yes,@PMoon.

I have my own pride and I'm confident that I will be a rich man myself, so its quite 'unfortunate' that I will remain in the middle and working classes in my search for a life partner.

The circumstances of one's birth are beyond choice, so u have to live with that.

I have a friend from a working class family who got married to the daughter of a billionaire. He's had to put up with direct and indirect taunts of being a gold digger. But he has refused to be dissuaded and his wife seems to manage the average lifestyle they are living.

I have another friend from a very rich family who hasnt been allowed to marry the lady of his choice beacuase she isnt from a reputable family. He's the heir to a business empire. He's confused on this issue.

The bottom line is to know what you want and if you can live with what comes after.

@davidylan,

I agree with you.

A man who is into 419 and 'hits' $5 million is obviously successful at his job. He's rich. Do you marry him based on the fact that he's worth $5 million?

Then you abandon the young graduate without looking at his prospects, just because he's not rich?

I think our society has a serious problem in this regard.

Politics / Re: President Obasanjo's Rating Is Degrading Internationally by ramono(m): 6:24am On May 05, 2006
I agree that Nigeria's international posture has dwindled due to the actions and/o inactions of some of our leaders. The following reasons can be attributed to this:

1. Many Nigerians are either not patriotic/ nationalistic or do not believe anything good can come out of Nigeria (this is pitiful and can be illustrated by some comments on this very forum)
2. Lack of bargaining power on the international scene by our foreign policists. That is why after all our human material and financial sacrifice in both Liberia and Sierra Leone for 9 years, we as a nation didnt gain anything for it and were even accused of diamond theft. Now Nigeria has 2200 troops in Darfur Sudan while South Africa has 340. What do we hope to achieve? We need to set our targets in terms of future economic benefits- it might sound mean but the meanest countries are the developed ones.
3. Lack of understanding of the principle of National Interest- No country goes against their National Interest and remains relevant, especially when u have the resources to do so. Nigeria's open flirtation with China threatens the interests of some developed countries. You dont expect them to clap for us.
4. Failure to realise that Nigeria's domestic political and economic climates affect other countries, who are watching with keen interest in order to protect their own interests. Examples are: June 12, Abacha Era and Third Term.
5. Lack of long time strategic forecasts on the part of our politicians and strategists.

Yeah, the Nigerian Stock Exchange doesnt really respond as sharply to changes in the political and social arenas as other exchanges eg NYSE. For example, the year Sharia Law was introduced in some states Nigerian Breweries and Guiness increased their profitability.

Ideas For A Million Naira Business?

I'm trying to convince a friend abroad to invest in Nigeria. His budget is 1 million naira (about 4000 pounds), but the problem is supervision. Which businesses could I recommend for him bearing this in mind (tolerable fraud level 5- 10%)?
Romance / Re: What Is It With Port-Harcourt Women And Money! Is It Normal? by ramono(m): 8:15pm On May 01, 2006
I had a nasty experience with a PH babe. When I was leaving PH on posting, she said I should pay her off. Like it was a contract or something!

She was even surprised when I refused saying some girls receive around $10,000 for 1heir 'pay off' ! And that was in 2000. It could be more now.

I think it has to do with so much money in circulation there and the girls' lack of conscience.
Business / Re: Shopping Center Revolution Possible In Nigeria? (Like India?) by ramono(m): 8:00pm On May 01, 2006
I am an avid believer in Nigeria. One thing I have noticed which has also been hinted to me by other nationals is that Nigerians are generally negative about Nigeria. The quality of the mall should not be the issue but the value added such as variety, jobs, conservation of foreign exchange etc.

I believe we should applaud the investment of Tayo Amusan, who rather than invest in Pontomac mansions or Swiss Cottage villas has provided 'The Palms'. We should even take steps like this further.

Na from clap dance dey start.
Romance / Re: Aristos And Our Campus Ladies by ramono(m): 10:27pm On Apr 20, 2006
In my opinion, an 'aristo' is a senior male who dates a younger lady in exchange for gifts and money. He could rage from 5 years to 30 or 40 years older than her. The bottom line is that the relationship is all about the money. Usually, the 'aristo' can afford to live like this due to his office and/or social status.

Those Nairaland members outside Nigeria may not appreciate how widespread the aristo phenomenon is. It exists in most higher institutions in Nigeria.

It is true that there is poverty in Nigeria, but there are places that make Ajegunle look like heaven eg Darfur, some parts of India and Bangladesh. Furthermore, some of these young ladies actually come from comfortable homes. However, driven by a desire for material acquisition such as fashion, trendy gadgets etc, they condescend to the aristo line and by so doing, lose all dignity and jeopardise their future.

Their male counterparts in university know them and note them. Consequently, you have scenarios like this-'Dele, the girl you are dating was in UNILAG with me and spent her 5 years frolicking with aristos'. I have seen instances like this where ladies lose would be suitors because of their past. Additionally, many ladies acquire STDs and HIV from these aristos, who someitmes engage them in preversive acts.

However, like Orikinla has said, it is their choice.
Romance / Re: Is It Wrong To Want To Marry A Rich Man? by ramono(m): 10:23pm On Apr 18, 2006
The quest of many young ladies for rich men can lead them into very uncomfortable circumstances. A rich man who knows you're after his wealth is more likely to have extramarital affairs. I once had a neighbour like this who when confronted by his wife , rebuked her for being greedy nd not allowing him to share his wealth with other ladies. Apart from that, once they get used to the rich lifestyle, they begin to see that all that glitters is no gold.

The trend now is for these ladies to overlook and even sometimes dump young and upcoming men for rich men, a situation tagged in Yoruba as 'ojukokoro'. More often than not, these young men have their destiny around the corner.

It's up to the ladies to try to discern and pray for the best.
