ZeemsPropeties:Changing tune? Originally you said "No place in Africa is like Nigeria in terms of rate of turnover and return on investment especially Lagos". 😂😂😂 Shoprite's biggest and most advanced competitors are in SA, not Mama Put in Nigeria. When Shoprite exited Nigeria the BBC reported Nigerians were broke and only used Shoprite to take selfies and ride it's escalators. How can anyone not need a one-stop supermarket? |
Gboom:False news. Shoprite's core market is South Africa (84% of total revenue). In the last year alone, Shoprite opened over 190 stores in SA - bringing the total to almost 3000. Nigeria didn't even have a handful. So get off your high horse, it's based on delusion. |
South Africa’s biggest retailer, Shoprite, says it expects its earnings to shoot up by more than 20% for the full year ending June 2025, with over 190 new stores opening nationwide. In a trading statement for the 12 months ending 29 June, the group anticipates its headline earnings per share to increase between 15% and 25% for the period in its total operations. For its continuing operations—which excludes the furniture business held for sale in Mozambique and Angola, its Malawi operations and its Ghana operations—headline earnings are expected to grow between 9.4% to 19.4%. This is based on restated figures for the prior periods, factoring in the ongoing sale of its furniture business to Pepkor, which has been delayed due to competitors’ appeals to the Competition Tribunal. According to Shoprite, the strong growth in earnings is attributed to the group’s focus on its core South African supermarkets business, which accounts for the vast majority of its sales. Total sales were restated at R232 billion for the 2024 full year, of which the RSA business accounted for R195 billion, or 84% of the total. The group expects to see overall sales growth of 8.9% for the year—but this is higher at 9.5% when looking at the RSA business. Like-for-like (same store) growth measured 4.8%. Shoprite noted that the RSA supermarkets segment has now extended its unbroken market share gains for a fifth consecutive year. The group recorded internal selling price inflation averaging 2.3% for the year, coming in lower than headline inflation (c3.0%). Checkers and Checkers Hyper, inclusive of Checkers LiquorShop, reported sales growth of 13.8%, and Shoprite and Usave, inclusive of Shoprite LiquorShop, reported sales growth of 5.9%. Notably, the group’s online business continued to thrive. Online sales through its on-demand delivery platform, Sixty60, increased by 47.7%. Running counter to its competitors in the market, the group has been on a significant expansion drive with store openings across its markets. In South Africa, the group opened 194 main banner supermarkets over the year, including 43 Shoprite stores, 38 Usave stores, 29 Checkers stores and three Checkers Hyper stores. In addition, the LiquorShop business added 36 Checkers and 45 Shoprite LiquorShops, respectively. “We continue to expand our footprint as part of our omnichannel growth strategy designed to extend our reach in adjacent categories where we are currently under-represented,” it said. This includes opening 60 new Petshop Science stores, taking the brand to a total of 144 stores. Checkers Outdoor added eight new stores, for a total of 28 stores; Uniq Clothing by Checkers added 10 new stores, for a total of 30 stores, and Little Me opened one new store, for a total of 11 stores.

Crash video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAX6CqcXmVg?si=X7uPsdEOnelsgKH- A high-speed crash involving the luxury supercar of Nigerian rapper Prince Daniel Obioma, better known to his fans as 3GAR, has culminated in potential legal repercussions. According to Nicholas Gostell, a member of the Democratic Alliance and the National Council of Provinces, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has revealed that after months of waiting and calls for action from local officials, the 29-year-old driver will face charges of reckless or negligent driving stemming from the incident that occurred on High Level Road in Sea Point on 1 March. The crash, which occurred at a staggering speed of over 200 kilometres per hour, resulted in the supercar colliding with a pavement and a wall, leaving a scene that quickly spread across social media platforms. Videos showcasing the savage wreckage of the vehicle garnered millions of views, as shocked onlookers witnessed the aftermath of what many described as a reckless display of speed and disregard for safety. Gostell who had long been advocating for swift action has expressed his satisfaction with the latest developments: ‘Reckless drivers have no place tearing through our neighbourhoods and endangering lives; no matter where you live or what you drive.’ According to Nicholas Gostell, a DA member of the National Council of Provinces focusing on Security and Justice, the Sea Point Police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident. However, he noted with concern that weeks after the crash, no charges had been filed against the driver. ‘Whilst security companies have released video footage of the accident, clearly showing that the vehicle moved at excessive speed through a suburban area before losing control, crashing into a kerb, and colliding with a boundary wall, the driver now alleges on social media that he swerved to avoid a homeless person and that the videos were edited,’ Gostell stated. Gostell’s comments come against a backdrop of rising frustrations among local residents about the increasingly reckless behaviour of high-performance vehicles on the streets of Sea Point and neighbouring Camps Bay. He emphasised that luxury and modified cars are causing frequent noise disturbances and violations of traffic laws, particularly during the early hours of the morning and over weekends. ‘Residents on the Atlantic Seaboard are particularly frustrated by the prevalence of these cars racing through our streets, putting lives at risk,’ he said. Since the news was shared that South Africa hopes to bring the F1 back to its shores in 2027, Cape Town and Johannesburg have been fighting about who would have the privilege of hosting the race. It's been over three decades since the F1 engines have roared on African tarmac but the cities are getting their fists out and staking their claim on the potential race. The competition is between two tracks – a street circuit in Cape Town and the historic Kyalami race track outside of Johannesburg (where the race was last held in 1993). Committee member Mlimandlela Ndamase told AFP they will choose the winning bid in the third quarter of 2025. "The Grand Prix is definitely coming in 2027, no doubt about that. Whether it is Cape Town or Joburg, we do not care as long as the Grand Prix is coming to South Africa”, Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie. While a street circuit could be very exciting the challenging Kyalami circuit offers 30km of zigzags and excitement. Rwanda and Nigeria (Abuja) have also thrown their hats into the ring. Deportation efforts are picking up steam in the United States of America, and they could have a direct impact on South Africa. That’s the fear of many following the United States of America’s latest rounds of deportations. The U.S. Homeland Security Department confirmed on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, that a flight carrying immigrants from different countries had landed in Eswatini. The move comes after the US Supreme Court lifted the limits on deportation to third countries. In a post shared to X (formerly Twitter), the Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated that the men were extremely dangerous. She also shared photos of the men, adding that they had been convicted of crimes ranging from child rape to murder. It’s unclear at this stage whether the men served all or part of their sentence in the US, or what will happen to them in Eswatini. The United States has a mixed relationship with Africa. In March 2025, Trump mocked Lesotho, claiming that no one had ever heard of the country. He also plans to slap South Africa with a 30% tariff hike from 1 August. Social media users weighed in on the United States' decision, reflecting on what it meant for South Africa. ![]()

Chinese e-commerce company Temu has launched a warehouse in South Africa as part of its efforts to ensure faster delivery and broader product selection for consumers. The move will intensify competition for South African e-commerce companies, such as Naspers-owned Takealot, as well as international players like Amazon. "Shoppers in South Africa can now receive their Temu orders in as little as one day, thanks to the e-commerce platform's new local warehouse dispatch option," the Chinese company said in a statement. Temu stated that by shortening delivery times, the local warehouse model provides South African shoppers with greater convenience and peace of mind. "It also enables Temu to offer new product categories, such as furniture, home goods, and other bulkier items, that were previously less accessible due to international shipping constraints," the company added. A Temu spokesperson said the company launched in the USA in 2022 and entered the South African market in 2024, and now operates in over 90 markets worldwide. Temu's local warehouse dispatch service has already been introduced in countries across Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific and now Africa. The spokesperson, however, added that Temu does not own warehouses but works with trusted third-party logistics providers. "Under the local fulfillment model, sellers store inventory in local warehouses, manage logistics, and provide after-sales support, allowing for faster delivery and more responsive service," the spokesperson said. The South African e-commerce ecosystem has seen tremendous growth in recent years and Temu faces competition from both local and global companies. In July 2024, South African retailer Shoprite Holdings launched an online bulk shopping and delivery service platform for small businesses, including informal stores like spaza shops. This followed American company Amazon launching its online marketplace in South Africa in May 2024. Temu's focus on growth in South Africa is in line with data from Statista, which forecasts that revenue in South Africa's e-commerce market will reach US$7.32 billion by the end of 2025. Statista said revenue is expected to show an annual growth rate of 9.49%, resulting in a market volume of $10.52 billion by 2029.
