South Africans on social media rejected a pledge of collaboration Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelethini signed with King Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Itsekiri Olu of Warri in Nigeria in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal on 16 May 2025. According to Sunday World, Misuzulu and Atuwatse III signed the symbolic pledge of collaboration, and Misuzulu said the pledge was not a symbolic gesture but an awakening of ancestral bonds between the two nations. Misuzulu said the two nations, separated by boundaries, are united by kinship, legacy and both nations' roles as custodians of African heritage, culture and dignity. Misuzulu said the purposeful meeting was born not out of convenience but a vision both nations shared to lead the Zulus and the Warri people into a future rooted in identity. He said both nations are ready to build trade and cultural relationships, and considered the engagement as a testimony of Pan African unity. The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Thami Ntuli, announced that the royal house received R86 million annually, a 4.3% increase. The money is meant to assist Misuzulu's cultural roles. Misuzulu also reappointed Prince Thulani Zulu as his current spokesperson. Zulu left the position three years ago when he fell out of favour with Misuzulu after he ascended the throne. WHAT DID SOUTH AFRICANS SAY? Netizens commenting on Sunday World's Facebook post rejected the partnership. Jacinta Zinhle MaNgobeswe Zuma asked: "Collaborate to do what?" Anele Jones asked: "Why did God curse us with such spineless and stupid leaders? What did we do to deserve this? This so-called king doesn't even love people under his leadership." Lutendo Mphidi Chi-anzi said: "He doesn't understand the tribe he leads. Unless he's doing it intentionally." Matthews Maphalala asked: "Out of all the tribes, he chose Nigerians?" Balebetse Seleka said: "I think the wrong man was chosen for the Zulu monarch. Trevor Ndlela said: "The problem with our king is that he does not understand the tribe he leads." Mavuso Lungelo Mawande said: "This country is out of control now. We have our domestic issues to sort out."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_Zbxe5ckdw?si=2gjJ_8v7tcnWOiMs President Donald Trump says President Cyril Ramaphosa will be coming to see him next week. This crucial face-to-face meeting is likely to be tense, and the outcome critical for the future of South Africa-US relations, which have hit rock bottom. Trump announced Ramaphosa’s visit during a press conference in Washington, which covered a wide range of subjects, including what he called the “genocide” he claimed was being conducted against white Afrikaners. This was why the US had offered them citizenship, he said. Forty-nine Afrikaner “refugees” were due to arrive in Washington on Monday afternoon, to make the US their new home. “Now the South African leadership is coming to see me, I understand sometime next week,” Trump said. Earlier on Monday, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola said at a media briefing that planning for a working visit by Ramaphosa to the US had reached a “very advanced stage”. The meeting between the two presidents is likely to be fraught as relations have been rocked by a series of hostile executive orders and statements from Trump and his government, terminating US aid, imposing huge import tariffs, expelling SA’s ambassador to the US Ebrahim Rasool and otherwise throwing economic and political relations into turmoil. Trump has attacked South Africa for a range of foreign policy decisions, mainly for taking Israel to the International Court of Justice for alleged genocide in Gaza, but also for alleged genocide against white Afrikaners. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o7X-r_hg_Y?si=KXCw_iPRXZaIFJmW At the press conference on Monday, Trump was asked why he was creating an expedited path into the US for Afrikaners while he had halted virtually all refugee admissions for people suffering famine and war, like those from Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). “Because they’re being killed and we don’t want to see people being killed,” he replied. “It’s a genocide taking place,” he added, repeating accusations by his officials. “Farmers are being killed. They happen to be white. But whether they’re white or black makes no difference to me. But white farmers are being brutally killed and their land is being confiscated in South Africa. “And so we’ve essentially extended citizenship to those people to escape from that violence and come here.” TRUMP TO SNUB G20 SUMMIT IN SA? He said that he didn’t know how he could attend the G20 summit, which SA is hosting in Johannesburg in November, “unless that situation is taken care of”. As Lamola and others have explained, there is no evidence that white farmers are being singled out for murder. Trump’s accusations that their land is being confiscated have evidently been prompted by the recent passage of the Expropriation Act, which allows the government to expropriate land without compensation in some circumstances. But the Act has not so far been used. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zr0vlAzDdVU?si=FHeGHrLsxMfyMDCn AVOIDING HUMILIATION, STANDING HIS GROUND International expert, Porf. Bheki Mngomezulu, says he is concerned for President Cyril Ramaphosa ahead of his meeting with his United States (US) counterpart, Donald Trump. The SA government dismissed the claims as misinformation. Mngomezulu says Ramaphosa should stand his ground as Trump is expected to be armed with lots of false information. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-62ZZnwXDE?si=YX5x3APJasIYPo_R He says, “In our own context, our President was quick to respond to issues that pertained the American politics where the President of America had made comments in the media.” “If our President doesn’t contain himself, we might see a worse situation than we saw when President Trump hosted President Zelenskyy. So therefore, I would maybe suggest that the advisors of the President and the President himself go there having well prepared himself for any eventuality, because President Trump has a way of making sure that he ridicules his counterparts from other countries.” Mngomezulu adds.

VIDEO: Why Patrice Motsepe could become next president of South Africa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBKFdMFBLYU?si=KUtQYiA3mWUeDXT2 Senior ANC members want to convince the billionaire Patrice Motsepe to make himself available to stand as the party’s next president. Rapport cited two well-placed sources who said many ANC members have been trying to convince Motsepe to enter politics for some time. They have even designed a flyer with Motsepe as incoming ANC President, Senzo Mchunu as incoming Deputy President, and Oscar Mabuyane as incoming Secretary General. However, the sources highlighted that it is still early days and that there is a long road ahead before the next ANC National Conference in 2027. Sunday World reported that the leadership race is in full swing despite warnings from ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula. Mbalula highlighted the principle that no one is allowed to engage or promote themselves in the name of the ANC for any position in the build-up to the 2027 national conference. “Anyone engaging in leadership contestations and discussions outside the agreed approach will face the consequences and be subjected to disciplinary processes,” he said. Deputy President Paul Mashatile, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, and Fikile Mbalula are other potential candidates for the ANC president position. WHO IS PATRICE MOTSEPE? Billionaire businessman Patrice Motsepe is a dark horse in the race for ANC President. However, this is not far-fetched. Motsepe has close ties with the ANC and has supported the political party for decades. He is also President Cyril Ramaphosa’s brother-in-law. He has built an incredible business empire with assets in mining, the finance industry, telecommunications, and sports. His business success belies the fact that he had a humble upbringing without the luxuries many of his fellow billionaires enjoyed as children. Motsepe was born in South Africa in the early 1960s, where he grew up in Ga-Rankuwa during the height of Apartheid oppression. His father was a schoolteacher and owned a tuck shop. Here, Motsepe was taught basic business skills. He was also exposed to miners, who often frequented the store. This helped him to create a business empire which stretches across Africa, with a strong focus on mining. His business acumen has been widely recognised, and in 2002, the chief executive officers of the top 100 companies in South Africa voted him South Africa’s Business Leader of the Year. He also won the Ernst & Young Best Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In 2017, Forbes Magazine honoured Motsepe as one of the “100 Greatest Living Business Minds” in the world. Motsepe’s success in the business world and his humble roots will resonate with South Africa’s voting population, especially through his ties with soccer. He is the president and owner of the Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club and was elected president of the Confederation of African Football in 2021. These organisations are considered well run and successful, and voters will see Motsepe as having the potential to translate this success into the political world.

MTN South Africa plans to offer 4G smartphones that cost from 99 rands ($5.4) to 1.2 million of its prepaid customers as part of work to shift the country from older 2G and 3G technologies. The initiative will be executed in three phases commencing in May 2025 until the end of 2026, MTN said in a statement on Monday. One of the conditions for receiving the device is that it can only be used with an MTN Sim card. “In phase 1, over 5000 carefully selected customers will be offered 4G smartphones. The selection will be based on usage profiles, spending patterns and tenure, and will mainly be in Gauteng province (around Johannesburg and Pretoria),” the company said. “In phase 2, more than 130 000 customers nationally will be offered the devices. In the third phase, more than 1.1 million MTN customers across the country will benefit.” The devices will come pre-loaded with a variety of applications. MTN didn’t say if WhatsApp — the de facto messaging app owned by Meta Platforms and used by millions of South Africans daily — was among them. MTN South Africa CEO Charles Molapisi said: “Regardless of where they live, we want to ensure that all South Africans can access the digital world.” MTN has partnered with Smartphone For All, founded by Babatunde Osho, a former CEO of Metrofile Nigeria who also served as chief enterprise solutions executive at MTN Nigeria. Osho holds an MBA from Imperial College Management School and an MSc from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has also completed executive programmes at Wharton Business School, Oxford Said Business School and IMD Business School. DRIVING DOWN COSTS The company told TechCentral that the low-cost 4G devices won’t be limited to one model — a variety of smartphones will be offered through the initiative. For phase 1, MTN is distributing a 5.5-inch model from Itel, though it hasn’t provided the exact device details. The move by MTN comes six months after rival Vodacom South Africa announced it was introducing a 4G “smartphone” for R249 ($13). The Mobicel S4-branded phone, which Vodacom described as a “cloud-based handset”, was introduced to “reduce the cost of smartphone access in the country” and to migrate more of the operator’s customers to 4G. “The cloud phone will help customers still anchored to 2G phones and not familiar with the touch-screen experience, allowing them to appreciate a smooth transition to the data and application world,” said Davide Tacchino, managing executive for terminals at Vodacom South Africa in a statement at the time. South Africa’s mobile operators are under pressure to migrate legacy 2G and 3G users to more modern technology so the spectrum can be freed up for more advanced technologies, including 4G and 5G. Vodacom last year cited a 2022 Vodafone-funded report by the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development in 2022, which argued that lowering the cost of devices was key to increasing access to smartphones. “The Alliance for Affordable Internet estimates that a smartphone priced at US$62 could cost almost 63% of the average monthly income across Africa. The Broadband Commission’s report recommended that so-called thin-client phones – like the new cloud-based phone which Vodacom has delivered – should be explored. The new cloud-based phone leverages the power of cloud computing to deliver a range of features typically associated with entry smartphones at a more affordable cost.”

German automaker BMW’s circular office in Midrand, Johannesburg, won a 5-star rating for its environmentally friendly features. BMW, which also owns Mini and Rolls-Royce, moved into its South African headquarters in Midrand in 2015. The iconic building is located next to Pretoria Main Road and off the N1 Highway. It is close to Grand Central Airport and the Midrand stop on the Gautrain. About 600 associates work in the building, with diverse fields including marketing, human resources, business strategy, and example sales for the BMW brand, Mini and BMW Motorcycle. The main building in Midrand is part of an “open campus,” which also includes the offices of the Financial Services section and the on-site training centre. The group’s website states, “Our uniquely designed atrium garden invites you to take a moment of relaxation and reload your energy. “ The Green Building Council of South Africa awarded the building a 5-star rating in 2015 for its environmentally friendly features. The rating made BMW South Africa the first automotive company in South Africa to receive the rating. The rating considered the indoor environment quality, energy, transport, water, materials, land use, ecology, emissions, and innovations. Variables that added to Midrand HQ’s GBCSA 5-star rating included: Glass and solar-controlled louvres installed within the internal façade of the building, enabling enhanced daylight and thermal comfort. 90% of the office’s usable area now has an external view, providing good levels of daylight for occupants. The peak electrical demand on the building was reduced by 30%, which included an extensive use of LED lighting throughout the building. 5% of the parking bays are now dedicated to alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles, while 5% are reserved for motorbikes, mopeds and scooters. Water-efficient sanitary fittings were installed throughout the building. Water meters were installed for all major water uses and connected to a Building Management System to support proper facility management of water consumption. A dedicated storage area was provided for waste recycling, All topsoil impacted by the construction was separated and protected from degradation, erosion, or mixing with fill or waste, and it still remains onsite. In addition to its Midrand headquarters, BMW has a manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria, and an IT hub in Menlyn, Pretoria.

The Mayor of the Buffalo City Metro, Princess Faku, made a bold statement on Sunday, saying that the self-proclaimed prophet Timothy Omotoso was not welcome in her city. Omotoso who was recently acquitted of more than 30 charges of human trafficking, rape and sexual abuse after a trial lasting eight years, is hosting a crusade in East London running from the 4th-11th of May at the Orient Theatre in the city. Mayor Faku took to social media on Sunday, saying that Omotoso would not be allowed to use any venue in the city, even if he paid for it. Metro Spokesperson Bongani Fuzile said BCM decided to cancel the booking at the Orient Theatre, making it clear that all bookings made at municipal venues towards this event would be cancelled, including venues in eQonce and Komani, which form part of the greater Metro. He says this decision was made to combat Gender-Based violence in the city. Fuzile said the municipality is encouraged by the urgent call to revisit the court decision that acquitted Omotoso who was charged with multiple counts of rape of young girls in his church. He said allowing his church crusade would pose a risk to the safety of young women in the metro. Fuzile said the municipality remains committed to building a society where women and children feel safe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBlr9njN5ew?si=40qpwSlLQXFYx0fk The televangelist and his two co-accused, Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sitho, were acquitted by Gqeberha High Court judge Irma Schoeman, who found that the state had failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt after a trial lasting nearly eight years. Earlier this week, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it had appointed a senior counsel to bolster its internal team of sexual offences prosecutors who will assess and advise on the prospects of appealing the judgment in the Omotoso matter. NPA spokesperson, advocate Mthunzi Mhaga, said this decision was “informed by the importance and the complexity of the matter, and the fact that the state can only appeal an acquittal judgment, in terms of Section 319 of the Criminal Procedure Act.”

This week, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy touched down in South Africa to meet President Cyril Ramaphosa, wearing exactly the same outfit he wore to the White House to engage with President Donald Trump. But unlike the somewhat rude reception of his semi-casual attire in the US, South Africans were full of praise for the man who had shunned wearing a suit. Zelenskyy was in the country to forge diplomatic relations. This comes amid a tense standoff between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. SOUTH AFRICANS PRAISE ZELENSKYY’S CASUAL OUTFIT In a video clip posted on Athi Geleba’s TikTok, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was seen walking alongside President Cyril Ramaphosa outside the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Ramaphosa donned a navy suit, red tie, and a pin bearing the South African flag. Zelenskyy, known for his casual clothing, wore an all-black look consisting of a buttoned-down shirt and chinos. On his shirt was a three-pronged spear, which is visible on its coat of arms and is a national symbol of Ukraine. The outfit was nearly identical to the one Zelenskyy wore to the White House last month. However, instead of being scolded for “disrespecting” the unofficial dress code, the 47-year-old leader of the war-torn country was praised by South Africans for “not conforming” to “Western standards”. WHY DOES HE NEVER WEAR A SUIT? President Zelenskyy has previously spoken of his decision to shun formal attire amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He is often spotted wearing military regalia in public in “solidarity” with those fighting to protect his country. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5AhGudWFfk?si=uqV2tPk3WMhdXueK When asked why he “disrespected” the White House’s dress code last month, Zelenskyy responded, “Do you have a problem?”. Toe agitated leader added: “I will wear a (suit) costume after this war finishes, yes. Maybe something like yours, yes, maybe something better. I don’t know, we will see. Maybe something cheaper. Thank you”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zkUGb__j1s?si=TMvruBuJclXnaSTY Speaking ahead of the visit of Ukrainian President, Volodmyry Zelenskyy, South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that he received a call from Donald Trump. The call was initially to discuss Russia’s war on Ukraine, but also included other topics. Both Ramaphosa and Trump agreed that the war needed to be brought to an end as soon as possible, to avoid any further deaths. The call also took place a day after Ramaphosa had a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two also reportedly committed to working together to find a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPM-uifrdmU?si=CZJzwb-1RCVTKFJ1 While the call with Trump centred around Thursday's visit by Zelenskyy, it also touched on relations between South Africa and the USA. Ramaphosa stated in an X post that they wanted to meet to address various matters. “We also spoke about the need to foster good relations between our two countries,” he said. There has been a mixed opinion about whether South Africa should attempt to fix things with the US, with many viewing it as giving in to Trump. The US President has made numerous false claims against the country and even cut funding to South Africa. He has also offered (white) Afrikaners a chance to become refugees in the USA if they didn't feel safe in South Africa.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l903Z3LydPc?si=TAsudwNDkS9nauBF US President Donald Trump has nominated Brent Bozell III as Washington’s new ambassador to South Africa amid a historic diplomatic deep freeze between the two countries. The nomination is one of many for several diplomatic postings around the world, published on the website of the US Congress. It followed 10 days after Washington expelled South Africa’s ambassador Ebrahim Rasool after he told a webinar hosted by a local think tank that Trump was trying to create a “supremacist revolution” at home and abroad. Bozell’s nomination must be confirmed by the US Senate. He was named by Trump in January to head the US Agency for Global Media, an umbrella agency overseeing government-funded broadcasters including Voice of America and Radio Free Europe. But on Friday Trump signed a decree dismantling the agency “to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law”. His nomination as its chief executive was formally withdrawn on Monday, according to the congressional website. Bozell is a lifelong conservative activist and founder of the Media Research Centre, which campaigns against what it identifies to be liberal bias in the mainstream media, and has portrayed Trump in particular as the victim of such bias. He also founded a related organisation that seeks to counter liberal influence on American culture. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9W6QsZk0es?si=y_HNDgAQbGZ0Tn83 He was once deeply critical of Trump but shifted his stance in the latter part of his first term as president and claimed that the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” after Trump lost to Joe Biden. His son Leo Brent Bozell was among about 1 600 Trump supporters charged for storming the US Capitol on 6 January 6 2021. He was pardoned by the president in January. There was no immediate comment from the department of international relations on Bozell’s nomination. The former US ambassador to Pretoria Reuben Brigety announced his resignation in November last year, effective from January. The deputy head of mission Dana Brown took over as acting chargé d’affaires, but resigned from the foreign service at the end of last month. David Greene, the deputy chief of mission in Abuja, Nigeria, was named as chargé d’affaires, pending the appointment of a new ambassador. President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office said last week that he would not rush to name a new ambassador to Washington. Privately, government officials have said he faced a complicated search for a candidate who could prove acceptable to a hostile administration that has demanded “policy change” from South Africa. In February, Trump signed an executive decree suspending all aid to South Africa after accusing the government of fomenting terrorism, seizing white-owned land and enabling the persecution of the Afrikaner minority. Ramaphosa’s office last week refuted suggestions by the US state department that the country was working with the Islamic Republic to develop nuclear arms.
