A video showing hippos casually roaming the streets of St Lucia has gone viral, leaving thousands of people amazed, amused and a little bit awed.

The video was shared by “Yvonne in the Bush“, a personal blog on Facebook.

“In 2012 I exchanged the Dutch city for the bush in South Africa. I live with my husband and son between the elephants, lions and other wild animals.”

She captioned her latest video, explaining what she had seen.

“Only in Africa can you find hippos, warthogs and monkeys in the middle of town! … St Lucia; the town where people and wild animals live together.”

St Lucia, tucked along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, is unlike anywhere else. It’s the only town in South Africa that sits entirely within a World Heritage Site, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Nature is woven into the fabric of everyday life here. And even though locals are used to spotting hippos on the estuary, grazing on golf courses, or wandering through neighbourhoods at night, Yvonne says her latest sighting was the most extraordinary yet.

“During our first night in the town we saw three hippos in the main street. I have seen hippos in town before, but never anything like this. It was by far the best hippo sighting in town I ever had.”

Her footage has everyone talking, not only because of the sight itself, but because of how close some people were willing to get. While hippos might look relaxed as they munch on lawns, they are still one of Africa’s most dangerous animals. Yvonne pointed this out in her post.

“As you can see in my movie people don’t keep the appropriate distance to these wild animals. People seem to forget that hippos are responsible for over 500 deaths each year.”

St Lucia is surrounded by water and the hippos come out mostly at night to graze. Locals even have a nickname for them, the “townies”, hippos that wander in for an easy meal of lush lawn grass. And it’s not just hippos. Yvonne says during her three-day visit, she also spotted warthogs running through the main road, monkeys tugging at shopping bags, honey badgers darting past and even small antelope. For her, that’s the real magic of the town.

“I love the atmosphere, the restaurants, the shops, the activities… but most of all I love the wildlife in town.”

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced that one of its news presenters was taken off air following backlash from a recent interview with Dr Mamphela Ramphele over the Palestinian genocide.

This stems from an incident between SABC journalist and news anchor Juliet Newell and anti-apartheid activist Ramphele.

During the exchange, Newell questioned Ramphele's likening of images of starving Palestinians to the Holocaust, asking: "Do you not see this as provocative?"

"The Holocaust happened, and it will continue to happen in different forms...Do we have to wait for millions to die to call this what it is? If we wait for six million to die, then humanity has no right to call itself human. To be human is to feel the pain of every person as if it were yourself," Ramphele responded.

The interview prompted strong criticism from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and media activists, who accused the broadcaster of echoing Israeli talking points and downplaying atrocities in Gaza.

In a statement, the SABC confirmed it had taken action. "SABC News management took immediate action in line with the SABC's internal processes, and the presenter in question is currently not scheduled," the broadcaster said.

It added that its editorial policies were designed to maintain trust with the public. "The SABC's Editorial Policies are aimed at building trust with the public and in ensuring that our content, in all its formats, continues to resonate with the prescripts of our public mandate, and more so in providing universal access to credible content."

The exchange has since triggered criticism of the public broadcaster's handling of the war in Gaza. In an open letter, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) accused the SABC of biased reporting and sanitising atrocities.

"It is unacceptable that a public broadcaster would consistently adopt language that mirrors Israeli talking points, using phrases like 'allegations of genocide' or 'according to Gaza health ministry'," the PSC said.

The organisation emphasised that the crisis should not be framed as a conflict between equal sides.

"This is not a 'war', it is a genocide, marked by forced displacement of civilians, indiscriminate bombing of homes, journalists, and medical staff, and the intentional starvation and blockade of aid," the PSC stated.

The group also criticised what it described as censorship and institutional bias. "These editorial choices suggest institutional interference or censorship, shielding Israel from accountability and denying South Africans the right to accurate, unbiased reporting," it wrote.

In its demands, the PSC called on the SABC to uphold ethical standards. "As a publicly funded institution, SABC has a duty to report with integrity, accuracy, and balance. We call on SABC to accurately describe the situation in Gaza as genocide, provide full coverage of South Africa's ICJ case against Israel, and stop adopting the framing or talking points of foreign governments at the expense of truth."

Did ShopRite site their stores in areas without disposable income? If not, location is half the job. Sounds like ShopRite's plan was to site the store in a location and just hope the residents around there would automatically choose them over their competitors. That's on them.

I'll do some research of all Shoprite locations in Nigeria and relevant stats of the areas. I believe they'll all come back as "affluent". Then we'll discuss further.

Every brand should have an identity that makes the customer want from them. Ease of access is one, exclusivity of products is another.

Nigeria has one-stop supermarkets. It's called the general markets. And Nigerians patronize one-man/family owned business for various reasons. If ShopRite is unable to convince people to choose their brand, that's on them. It is the responsibility of any brand to ensure that people recognize and need them. That's the entire foundation of marketing.
Again, ShopRite is a foreign company, you don't just expect patronage, you ensure patronage. I maintain that the failure of the company is on the board for expecting that a formula that worked in one market would work in another without taking into consideration that there are factors unique to different markets.

False news. Shoprite's core market is South Africa (84% of total revenue). In the last year alone, Shoprite opened over 190 stores in SA - bringing the total to almost 3000. Nigeria didn't even have a handful. So get off your high horse, it's based on delusion.

South Africa’s biggest retailer, Shoprite, says it expects its earnings to shoot up by more than 20% for the full year ending June 2025, with over 190 new stores opening nationwide.

In a trading statement for the 12 months ending 29 June, the group anticipates its headline earnings per share to increase between 15% and 25% for the period in its total operations.

For its continuing operations—which excludes the furniture business held for sale in Mozambique and Angola, its Malawi operations and its Ghana operations—headline earnings are expected to grow between 9.4% to 19.4%.

This is based on restated figures for the prior periods, factoring in the ongoing sale of its furniture business to Pepkor, which has been delayed due to competitors’ appeals to the Competition Tribunal.

According to Shoprite, the strong growth in earnings is attributed to the group’s focus on its core South African supermarkets business, which accounts for the vast majority of its sales.

Total sales were restated at R232 billion for the 2024 full year, of which the RSA business accounted for R195 billion, or 84% of the total.

The group expects to see overall sales growth of 8.9% for the year—but this is higher at 9.5% when looking at the RSA business. Like-for-like (same store) growth measured 4.8%.

Shoprite noted that the RSA supermarkets segment has now extended its unbroken market share gains for a fifth consecutive year.

The group recorded internal selling price inflation averaging 2.3% for the year, coming in lower than headline inflation (c3.0%).

Checkers and Checkers Hyper, inclusive of Checkers LiquorShop, reported sales growth of 13.8%, and Shoprite and Usave, inclusive of Shoprite LiquorShop, reported sales growth of 5.9%.

Notably, the group’s online business continued to thrive. Online sales through its on-demand delivery platform, Sixty60, increased by 47.7%.

Running counter to its competitors in the market, the group has been on a significant expansion drive with store openings across its markets.

In South Africa, the group opened 194 main banner supermarkets over the year, including 43 Shoprite stores, 38 Usave stores, 29 Checkers stores and three Checkers Hyper stores.

In addition, the LiquorShop business added 36 Checkers and 45 Shoprite LiquorShops, respectively.

“We continue to expand our footprint as part of our omnichannel growth strategy designed to extend our reach in adjacent categories where we are currently under-represented,” it said.

This includes opening 60 new Petshop Science stores, taking the brand to a total of 144 stores.

Checkers Outdoor added eight new stores, for a total of 28 stores; Uniq Clothing by Checkers added 10 new stores, for a total of 30 stores, and Little Me opened one new store, for a total of 11 stores.

A high-speed crash involving the luxury supercar of Nigerian rapper Prince Daniel Obioma, better known to his fans as 3GAR, has culminated in potential legal repercussions.

According to Nicholas Gostell, a member of the Democratic Alliance and the National Council of Provinces, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has revealed that after months of waiting and calls for action from local officials, the 29-year-old driver will face charges of reckless or negligent driving stemming from the incident that occurred on High Level Road in Sea Point on 1 March.

The crash, which occurred at a staggering speed of over 200 kilometres per hour, resulted in the supercar colliding with a pavement and a wall, leaving a scene that quickly spread across social media platforms.

Videos showcasing the savage wreckage of the vehicle garnered millions of views, as shocked onlookers witnessed the aftermath of what many described as a reckless display of speed and disregard for safety.

Gostell who had long been advocating for swift action has expressed his satisfaction with the latest developments: ‘Reckless drivers have no place tearing through our neighbourhoods and endangering lives; no matter where you live or what you drive.’

According to Nicholas Gostell, a DA member of the National Council of Provinces focusing on Security and Justice, the Sea Point Police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident. However, he noted with concern that weeks after the crash, no charges had been filed against the driver.

‘Whilst security companies have released video footage of the accident, clearly showing that the vehicle moved at excessive speed through a suburban area before losing control, crashing into a kerb, and colliding with a boundary wall, the driver now alleges on social media that he swerved to avoid a homeless person and that the videos were edited,’ Gostell stated.

Gostell’s comments come against a backdrop of rising frustrations among local residents about the increasingly reckless behaviour of high-performance vehicles on the streets of Sea Point and neighbouring Camps Bay.

He emphasised that luxury and modified cars are causing frequent noise disturbances and violations of traffic laws, particularly during the early hours of the morning and over weekends.

‘Residents on the Atlantic Seaboard are particularly frustrated by the prevalence of these cars racing through our streets, putting lives at risk,’ he said.
