Chairperson of the portfolio committee on police, Ian Cameron, says it is outrageous that Parliament’s cleaners will soon earn more than police officers. Earlier this week, the South African Parliament confirmed that some of the lowest-paid workers, including cleaners and those in the catering services, will receive a 100% salary hike over three years. By 2026, their salary will increase from the current R170 000 (N15,6 million) per annum to R350 000 (N32 million). National Education, Health and Allied Workers (Nehawu) chairperson Sthembiso Tembe told SABC that the decision is a victory for workers. Tembe said it’s a victory for the union to ensure they improve workers’ employment conditions. “So, we are happy about the decision. However, we also understand that as much as we would have wanted this decision to be implemented immediately without waiting for 2026, we understand that the institution is facing serious financial constraints. Hence, we are going to wait, and we have accepted the progressive implementation of this decision,” he said. Following Parliament’s confirmation, Democratic Alliance (DA) member of Parliament and chairperson of the portfolio committee on police Ian Cameron questioned the decision. “No offence to the cleaning staff, but surely we need to look after our cops. Imagine being a sergeant for over 10 years (some much longer) despite excellent performance. You witnessed promotions of politically connected people over the years, and now you hear this news. These are the changes we are fighting for. We must speak on behalf of the cops who don’t get a fair opportunity to do so,” he posted on X. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) annual report for the 2022-2023 financial year, 179 502 members earn an average salary of R37 500 (N3,4 million) per month.

To cut a long story short... these miners are resisting coming up to the surface because they know the cops are waiting for them and they'll either be arrested or deported. The cops have been patient for weeks nows since Oct 18. The illegal miners Underground come from Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. They're usually heavily armed and terrorize host communities. Yet they're reluctant to surface even after bern trapped for weeks underground. Most South Africans want them dealt with decisively as they're a serious security risk to the neighbouring communities and a law unto themselves. |
South Africa's government says it is not willing to help around 4,000 illegal miners, who are believed to be inside an abandoned mine situated in the North West province. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni told a media briefing on Wednesday that the government would not be sending help to the illegal miners, known locally as "zama zamas", because they are involved in a criminal act. 'We are going to smoke them out - government minister https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IflzVaVyxg8?si=oCVjy60j91ks4NQX

"We are not sending help to criminals. We are going to smoke them out. They will come out. Criminals are not to be helped; criminals are to be prosecuted. We didn't send them there," Ntshavheni said. South African publication Daily Maverick cited mining security analysts as doubting the number of "zama zamas" underground, saying as many as 2,000 was more "plausible." The miners are in a shaft in Stilfontein, a mining town located around 155 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg. They are believed to be running low on food and water after authorities throttled their supply lines with the intention of forcing them up to the surface. Over the past few weeks more than 1,000 have resurfaced and have been arrested by police as part of their "Vala Umgodi," — or "Close the Hole" operation. South Africa's Ministry of Police and the Ministry of Defense planned to visit the North West province to meet with local authorities to look at operations around the Stilfontein mine and assess "challenges and work out appropriate responses." "SAPS (The South African Police Service) remains resolute in its commitment to uphold law and order and urges all remaining illegal miners to adhere to police calls to resurface," the South African Police Ministry said in a statement. South Africa had once been the world's largest producer of gold but that has been on the decline over the past few decades. A number of former mining operations now are abandoned and have fallen into disrepair. Thousands of illicit miners pick through these shuttered mines in search of gold and other minerals in a practice considered extremely dangerous due to the state of the mines. Last year in June, at least 31 people died in a closed mine in the Free State province after a methane blast. Many come from neighboring countries among them, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and Lesotho. They often work in dangerous conditions but many of the miners themselves are considered to be dangerous by South African authorities. There have been numerous instances in which illegal miners have been suspected of being involved in violent crimes, including murders, robberies and rapes. There are also turf wars involving heavily armed "zama zamas" fighting off rival outfits and who often take on local authorities themselves.

Signboard the whites left 20 years ago. |
legitnow1:Sepukku your brother has gotten lost here with the Chidimma comment, please skool him. Meanwhile, I'll see you dumb & dumber tomorrow. It's midnight in SA, we're ahead of nigeria in everything - even time . Shalom ![]() |
legitnow1:They're families of the illegal miners. Try to keep up, this is a high level intellectual discussion and you're currently getting an F ![]() |
Sepukku:You ever see South Africans comment about nigerian issues? No! We comment about activities of nigerians in SA. You on the other hand like to act like you know SA better than South Africans. |
Sepukku:These are Chidimmas benefitting from crime. |
legitnow1:Okey dokey, stay tuned. Interesting days ahead ![]() |
legitnow1:You'd have a point if you knew the devastating history of zama zamas in SA. Since you don't, how bout you take a chill pill or go read up on it and then return with wise arguments? Think you can do that buddy? ![]() |
legitnow1:Ok, and now for the potential dangers of crime on society? Say maybe, heavily armed illegal foreign miners in South Africa. |
Sepukku:You mean their friends and families who know where to find them underground down a 100km shaft? You mean the cops can trust these guys below? ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gmHG0MN54I?si=AOYdtgYbZCrt80oB |
Sepukku:Remind us again why they're heavily armed? ![]() |
legitnow1:Is crime right? Let's all embrace hate bro, isn't that why Trump is your hero? ![]() |
legitnow1:Go tell that to Trump, your hero. You were rejoicing when he won right, because he's anti-lgbt. We learnt hate from him sorry you're on the receiving end. |
legitnow1:Those are people and families benefitting from crime. Have you asked yourself why they're familiar with the terrain underground and where to find the miners down a shaft 100s of kilometers deep? its because they've been down there before. Their only saving grace is because they were not caught in the act. |
legitnow1:What were they doing engaging in a criminal activity? Everyone in SA knows the govt has declared a war against illegal miners and yet they went ahead telling themselves they're smarter than South Africans. Well guess who's laughing now ![]() |
Sepukku:Lol, now criminals (armed illegal miners) are "fellow human beings". But no, its not crime sympathizing! ![]() |
Sepukku:Answer...
|
legitnow1:As a sympathizer, warn your brothers too. Same fate awaits them ![]() |
Sepukku:You don't feed criminals for eternity waiting on their goodwill to one day get arrested. You need to make the conditions unbearable so they come to the negotiating table. Same way you throw teargas when you ambush them - next you'll say that's not upholding the rule of law Sit down man |
Sepukku:Now you know who they are - go through this thread from top to bottom, the majority are crime sympathizers. |
Sepukku:I see you're commenting with great conviction on matters you know nothing about. Zama zamas went into an abandoned (or hijacked mine shaft) to conduct illegal mining despite knowing its prohibited. SA police shut off all escape routes and orders them to surrender. Zama Zamas refuse and opt to stay underground. SA police starve them for weeks in order to force them out. Zama zamas stay put although a 1000 have since surfaced since Oct 18. |
legitnow1:This is an online space, you don't own it. Secondly, you're the one who entered my thread, so you're the foreigner in my thread. Kapish. And lastly, I'm not the one defending criminality. I asked why you and the majority of people in this thread prone to being crime sympathizers? Is it an indication of who you are as a people? |
Sepukku:You want sympathy instead for criminals who knowingly went underground to steal SA mineral wealth? Give me a break. |
legitnow1:Why is it your responsibility as foreigners to see everything in SA as an opportunity for criminal activity? Are you natural born criminals? |
Sepukku:This is not a normal search and rescue mission aided by mine bosses and maps, dumbo. Its an illegal mine operation littered all over with hardened criminals carrying guns. Go be doff somewhere else, but you're deliberately trying to deceive gullible nigerians. Good thing we South Africans are smarter than that. |
legitnow1:You don't bargain from a point of weakness. These are hardened criminals and shouldn't be treated like babies giving them bread, water and dessert. Now that they know we mean business we have an upper hand over them and they'll dance to our tune. ![]() |
Sepukku:I asked you a simple question - who do you expect to go down a 100km shaft they're not familiar with to go confront 1000s of heavily armed criminals underground familiar with the terrain? |
franvincoop:Good news we SA don't have to travel out of SA to inflict wotowoto beating on Nigerians. Bring it on,and tell Air Peace to rev their engines ![]() |
Sepukku:Who's gonna go down shaft 100kms long that they're not familiar with searching for thousands of armed criminals? Are you mad? We should compel them to come out. If they refuse we leave them to die there, we'll have 4000 less criminals. |
legitnow1:See the chaos your migrant cousins are causing. It won't move you because you people sympathize with criminals - this thread is evidence of that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gmHG0MN54I?si=QnfI8Dlb5RU0k3CQ |
