Calabar air mishap caused by ATC, says Omotoba The air collision averted at the Calabar Airport last Friday was caused by an Air Traffic controller who mistakenly asked the two aircrafts involved to descend and ascend to the same 21,000 feet, Minister of Aviation, Babatunde Omotoba said yesterday in Abuja. Addressing State House correspondents, the minister explained that it was the TCAS equipment installed on the aircrafts that enabled one of them to detect that the other was on a collision course with it. “This is a very good forum for me to assure Nigerians that Nigeria’s airspace is safe. Last Friday, there was an air mishap over Port Harcourt, an aircraft was taking off from Calabar, while another one was coming to land in Calabar, and they were about to collide over Port Harcourt. Our investigations revealed that it was due to air traffic controller error. The ATC, when we looked at his log book, actually asked the pilot that was coming to land to descend to a level of 21,000 feet, whereas what he put down on his log was 25,000 feet. And then he also asked the one which was taking off to Lagos to stay at 21,000feet, so they had to cross path”, he stated. “What saved the situation was the line of defence we have in our airspace. On every aircraft in Nigeria we have what we call Traffic Collision Avoidance System. So one of the aircraft was able to notice that an aircraft was coming very close to it, and then it decided to come down 5000 feet to ensure there was no collision. So we are happy to discover that there was no collision, and the TCAS that was put on our aircraft is working, otherwise it would have been disastrous on Friday. Now, we have grounded the two aircraft, we have called the crew, there is investigation going on between NCAA and NAMA. The first meeting was held on November 3, and then we also got all the ATC’s tape, as well as the log book. It was from there that we realized that it was ATC error”, he said further. Omotoba said the ATC who made the mistake has been suspended while his supervisor has been queried. He explained that investigations into the incident would continue so that “we will be able to know more very soon.” http://allafrica.com/stories/200911050175.html |
dr I:What you described above is common to ALL the domestic carriers, about the bolded part,I don't think you paid anything out of the ordinary as I'm aware Dana is still new on the PH route hence they have a promotional fare of 9K(which I think you paid for their ticket),but maybe because of under-booking the flight was rescheduled, hence you had to go with the Ariks,Virgins,Aeros etc of this world whose tickets unfortunately go for 16k-20k,really no big deal,THEY ALL DO IT dr I:Which death, don't be ridiculous man |
mukina2:No wahala my loff, ![]() |

Though we won by a wide margin,I'm not impressed with our players, their finishing was below par BTW,how on earth did New Zealand make it to the knock out stages, their style of play can bore a grown man to death |

^^^ ^^^ About qualifying for the round of 16,we've qualified already, forget all the talk about needing just one more point from our remaining two games. If you seriously think any of the pretenders in our group can diminish our four-point buffer and stop The Arsenal from finishing top of group H,then you must be sharing damp rizzlas with Dayo ![]() |
~Sauron~:Sharrap dia,you miserable spoil sport, all the clubs that're said to have qualified are all on 10 points, the same as The Arsenal,we've scored ten goals to achieve that, whereas manure has scored seven goals to be on ten points. We've qualified, simple On another note,Le Prof has answered you definitively;HE WALLOPPED Ronald Koeman Koeman even said that The Arsenal was far better than his team,he's an honourable man,Sharon try and be honourable, doff ur hat for me boyz ![]() |

Now we are seeing that indeed the cabal means business, see how they just orchestrated an artificial fuel scarcity in Abuja. Mr President, you sure say you go still fit deal with this cabal? |
That was a seven point cardiac arrest |
Then jail them,to think Ndudi was jumping up and down making so much noise about wanting to prosecute those IPP contractors that collected mobilisation and used it to establish airlines and buy up banks, whereas he was actually going behind to do wuru wuru, that asshole must be jailed |
Anything apart from drastic development of the ND is unacceptable. The FG should act fast and deny the boys of any excuse to strike, but if they want to delude themselves that the boys have handed over their arms, that the FG now have them in the federal pocket, well I say safe journey |
Nasriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Goallllllllllllllllllllllllll |
