"Following a review of our current situation, we have in addition to the subsisting measures taken in the past one week, decided to shut down all our boundaries, effective from midnight Sunday, March 29, 2020. In addition, a complete lockdown of the State will come into effect from midnight, Tuesday, March 31, 2020 "We believe this is the way to go if we must contain the spread of this virus. To this end, we urge citizens and residents to take advantage of the hours between now and Tuesday to stock up provisions that will last them two weeks in the first instance. "During the lockdown, there will be no movement within the state. The closed boundaries also mean there will be no inter-state movements. However, those on essential duties such as health personnel, fire service, environmental officials, security personnel, power and water supply agencies, media and telecommunication officers will be on duty. Also, pharmaceutical and medical outfits will be allowed to open. "We have mandated and mobilized the State’s taskforce and security operatives to enforce measures to the letter. We, therefore, strongly advise our people to remain in their homes during the period of the lockdown. "When an emergency occurs, such as the one at hand, the first priority of any responsive and responsible government is to respond effectively to protect its citizens. This is what we will continue to do", Oyetola added. The governor urged the residents not to panic by the new measures but continue to adhere to the government's instructions and directives on the need for them to continue to observe necessary precautionary measures, including regular washing of hands with water and soap and also maintain the prescribed social distancing. He lauded the critical stakeholders led by the former Health Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole; taskforce and health officers for their selfless service to humanity. No fewer than 100 residential buildings, schools, churches were destroyed by an explosion suspected to be bomb blast in Akure, the Ondo State capital. The incident which happened less than a kilometre to Akure Airport, affected many residents of Eleyowo community, destroying completely a church and a school in the area. The school with boarding facilities was destroyed beyond repair with roofs of all the buildings blown off. The spot at which the bomb or blast happened cut off the road, hindering vehicular movement. Speaking during the visit, Akeredolu said, "I have been briefed by the security chiefs that in the early hours of Saturday, March 28th, a vehicle in a convoy transporting explosives to a storage facility in a neighbouring state developed a fault while in transit along the Akure Owo Road about 2km from the Akure Airport. Security personnel and other individuals transporting the ordinances noticed smoke from the vehicle. After several attempts to extinguish the resulting fire failed, the vehicle and its consignment ignited causing a massive explosion that was felt in Akure and its environs. Presently, efforts are being made to ascertain if there are casualties. Following my visit to the scene, I have directed that the area be cordoned off to allow the explosive ordinance department/bomb squad to extricate the vehicle buried underground because it is unclear if there are still explosives that are yet to be detonated. Everything is under control and I will be updating the public on any new developments. We understand that this is taking place in the midst of a global crisis. We ask that everyone continues to stay calm, stay safe and continue to take responsibility in this Covid-19 Nigeria fight." The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to news reports that Lagos is on lockdown following Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s update on the steps taken to curtail the spread of Coronavirus. The impression created by such reports is erroneous; Lagos is not on lockdown despite the stringent measures introduced by the government. Mr. Governor, who is the Incident Commander, only urged private sector establishments to introduce measures that will support the government’s efforts at curtailing the spread of COVID-19. Governor Sanwo-Olu suggested that banks should enhance their online banking services to enable their customers to have transactions without visiting banking halls. All markets that are not selling food, pharmaceutical products, water, medical equipment, and other essential materials are to close down. Workers providing essential services - Fire Service, Emergency, health, water, telecommunication, security, media and others - are exempted from this directive. The initiatives being introduced by the government are to prevent any situation where more than 25 persons will gather in the same place at any time. The Sanwo-Olu Administration is concerned about the rising number of COVID-19 cases, hence it is adopting measures to keep residents safe. The government will continue to appraise the situation, consult various stakeholders and make further announcements to check the spread of this lethal disease. Residents should observe simple hygiene measures, such as washing hands with soap and water, covering mouth while sneezing or coughing and consulting a doctor when feeling ill. Anyone feeling unwell should stay indoors. We should remain observant, prayerful and report all suspected cases of COVID-19 through the emergency hotlines – 08000CORONA, 08023169485, 08033535529, 08052817243. These involve, but not limited to, observing high hygiene by washing our hands often, using sanitizers where soap and water are not available, ensuring social distancing, avoiding handshakes and gatherings, as well as promptly contacting government agencies in the event of close persons displaying symptoms of the virus. “Earlier in the month, we had set up specific control measures across our offices to ensure customers and staff are protected from possible exposure to the virus by providing sanitizers at the entrances and using hand-held infra-red thermometers to screen customers/visitors and staff. We are keenly following developments across the country and the advice of our government and health institutions as part of concerted efforts to safeguard everyone and to make sure our workplaces remain safe,” she added. Abuja, Nigeria. March 18th, 2020 – Daily, new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) emerge around the world. What is certain from China to Italy to Iran etc. is that nations and continents are being affected by the rate at which the virus spreads. People are being quarantined in hospitals and aboard ships in distant ports, and the movement of labour and vital supplies has been significantly distorted. Nigerian recorded its first case of COVID-19 on the 25th of February 2020 with the index case being an Italian man who works in Nigeria and flew into the commercial city of Lagos from Milan. Since then Nigeria has recorded an additional 2 cases – contact of the index case and an independent woman who arrived from the United Kingdom on the 13th of March, 2020. Given this backdrop, NOIPolls conducted a public opinion poll to gauge the perception of Nigerians regarding the awareness, mode of transmission, symptoms and to ascertain their awareness on possible preventive measures of COVID-19. This poll was conducted at the time Nigeria had only 2 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The poll result revealed that a vast proportion of Nigerians (84 percent) are aware of the COVID-19 virus disease and this cuts across gender, geographical location and age-group with at least 73 percent representation. The awareness level is not surprising given that the health authorities have through various media platforms informed Nigerians of the illness and have assured Nigerians that they can manage the spread of the virus, when the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in the country in February 2020. Also, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) issued a public health advisory to inform Nigerians about symptoms and preventive measures and has provided a toll-free number for guidance. With the incorrect news of immunity being spread it is alarming to note that the poll revealed that 26 percent of Nigerians nationwide held the perception that they are immune to the virus. Further probing showed that Nigerians who held this belief have based it on their faith and religious beliefs (40 percent) and the perception that they have a strong genetic make-up (30 percent) that is resistant to the virus. Additionally, other opinions on immunity to the virus includes, that the Nigerian weather is too hot for the virus to survive in(17 percent), and that their personal herbal remedy will protect them from the virus (8 percent), while others have the idea that the COVID-19 is not an African disease rather a western disease (5 percent). On panic level, with reference to being infected by the virus, 63 percent of Nigerians disclosed that they are concerned that they may contract the virus. With regards to knowledge of the symptoms of infection, cough (45 percent), fever (33 percent) and sneezing (25 percent) were identified as the top three symptoms of the virus while body contact with an infected person was mostly mentioned as one of the primary ways of spreading the virus. Furthermore, the poll revealed that 50 percent of Nigerians do not have information on preventive measure against the coronavirus disease. This implies that about hundred million Nigerians are at risk of being infected with the disease. Nevertheless, it is heartwarming to note that 45 percent stated that regular washing of hands is one of the measures they would take to prevent the spread of the disease. Interestingly, it is very important to note also that a vast majority of Nigerians disclosed that they would be willing to report (97 percent) and be tested (97 percent) if they show any sign of COVID-19 as well as willing to be quarantined (97 percent) if they are at risk of spreading the virus disease. Currently, COVID-19 has been considered a pandemic as a result of its speed and scale of transmission. It is pertinent that the Federal Ministry of Health and all stakeholders, continue and ramp up their efforts in ensuring that the cases of the virus infection can be reduced in Nigeria, and ultimately contain the virus. Also, more needs to be done in terms of a nationwide campaign to sensitize more Nigerians on the preventive measures against the virus disease as 50 percent disclosed that they do not have information on preventive measures against the virus. These are key findings from the gender equality poll conducted in the week commencing March 9th, 2020. The Lagos State Government has acknowledged the commendation by the World Health Organisation on steps taken by the Nigerian government to contain the spread of Coronavirus, COVID 19, in the country. A statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, said the recognition of Nigeria’s efforts by the Director-General of the United Nations Health Agency, Dr. Tedros Ghebereyesus, is a testimony that the decision of the Lagos State government to spearhead the construction of the Biobanking and Biosecurity Laboratory at the Mainland Specialist Hospital, Yaba was timely and ingenious. Dr. Ghebereyesus hailed Nigeria’s handling of the epidemic, saying, “This a true act of solidarity and an important step in stopping the Coronavirus from spreading further”. The Commissioner reiterated that “When news of the Coronavirus broke, the State Government on February 3 set up an Incident Command Centre headed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Incident Commander and Health Commissioner, Akin Abayomi as the Deputy Incident Commander. They rallied experts to tackle the pandemic.” He added that no fewer than 60 health officials were stationed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport to check that visitors did not bring in the virus. Omotoso recalled that Lagos State also embarked on the training of medical personnel to become experts in laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases before the facility was completed. “The foresight of the Lagos State government prepared us for the advent of Coronavirus in Nigeria and through the Grace of God, this administration has been able to leverage the experience of trained medical personnel in curtailing the spread of the infectious disease,” Omotoso said. The Commissioner maintained that the advocacy campaigns initiated by the State government also assisted in arousing the consciousness of residents to the symptoms, dangers and preventive measures required to avoid the risk of contracting the disease. While emphasizing the need to take prompt steps whenever anyone suspects symptoms of the disease, the Commissioner noted: “Immediately the index case of Coronavirus was discovered, the government promptly convened a stakeholder-forum where experienced Doctors, including the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi and Dr. Bamidele Mutiu, Head of the Lagos State Biobank and seasoned infectious disease specialist, addressed community leaders, transport unions, teachers: and politicians among other residents”. He, however, cautioned residents to remain vigilant, despite the accolades of the World Health Organisation on the feat achieved in Nigeria since the identification of the index case in Ogun State. Commending the medical team that has been attending to quarantined persons since the discovery of the index case, Omotoso admired their professionalism and urged them not to rest on their oars until every patient being tested has been confirmed free of the virus. The Commissioner reiterated that the already identified primary and secondary contacts of the index case are being actively monitored and urged members of the public to report any suspected cases of Coronavirus to the nearest health facilities or through the telephone numbers 08023169485, 08033565529, 08052817243 and 08023401214. Lagos State Government has disclosed that it has been able to break the circle of person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 from the index case in the State. The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who disclosed this at a news briefing to give updates on the #COVID19Lagos said all other identified contacts of the index case, except the positive contact who has now tested negative to the virus and discharged, have exceeded the 14 days quarantine isolation period without symptoms. He said, “The remaining contacts of the index case; those in Ogun and Lagos States remain symptom-free and they have exceeded their 14 days surveillance, which means that we do not expect that any of them will turn positive from direct contact with the index case”. “In simple words, that means in Lagos, we have been able to interrupt the transmission between the index case and anybody in this environment, we have broken the circle of transmission and have not given the virus the opportunity to spread beyond one person. So, the threats posed by the index case to Lagos and Nigeria has been eliminated and we have not gotten an outbreak as a result of the interventions that took place in Lagos”, the Commissioner added. Abayomi explained that the positive contact of the index case tested negative after two consecutive tests conducted on him, noting he has been certified to be virus-free and subsequently discharged. “His tests initially showed that he was positive to Coronavirus twice and now, he has tested negative to the virus on two consecutive tests carried out on him”, he said. However, on the index case, Abayomi stated that the Italian being managed at the Mainland General Hospital, Yaba remains on admission although perfectly well now, he is still secreting the virus, stressing that the patient is getting closer to being discharged as his immune system is gradually wiping out the virus. “He is perfectly well now, we are only keeping him because he still has some secretion of the virus. The test shows that anytime from now, he may be negative. If he is negative, we will conduct another test within 48 hours after and if he is still negative, we will set him free. We are close to discharging the index case, we want to be sure he poses no danger to society anymore”, Abayomi stated. The Commissioner, however, assured members of the public not to panic stating that government will continue to respond swiftly and take necessary actions to contain the spread of the disease, adding that the Lagos will continue to strengthen its surveillance and will be sending more medical personnel to the point of entry at the Airport. https://lagosstate.gov.ng/blog/2020/03/14/covid19-index-case-we-have-broken-the-circle-of-transmission-lagos-health-commissioner/

...Sensitises Articulated Vehicle Owners on Road Safety As part of the efforts to further unlock traffic gridlocks and ensure free vehicular movement across the metropolis, the Lagos State Government, through its Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), has organized a stakeholder meeting to sensitize articulated vehicles owners about the need to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before putting them on roads. The sensitization, according to the State Government, became necessary in view of the frequent traffic jam resulting from the frequent breakdown of rickety vehicles and articulated trucks that daily ply Lagos roads and the danger they constitute to citizens’ safety. The Director, Vehicle Inspection Service, (VIS), Engr. Akin George Fashola who chaired the meeting, stated that the stakeholders' meeting was aimed at bringing different players together to educate them on government policy relating to the movement of dry and wet cargo within the State as well as intimating them with regulations guiding road carnage by articulated trucks in Lagos. He added that the increased traffic in the metropolis, occasioned by the regular breakdown of articulated vehicles, indicated the need to inculcate the culture of safety in motorists plying Lagos roads as well as enlighten them on the need to be more cautious and responsible in their daily operations. Fashola warned that the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) will, henceforth, uphold the State government’s zero tolerance for rickety trucks and articulated vehicles to promote safety on Lagos roads. He disclosed that there was an agreement among participants that a period of six weeks be given all stakeholders involved in haulage movement to revalidate their documentation and put their vehicles in a proper working condition, failure of which such vehicles would be impounded by the VIS. While warning operators of articulated trucks, tippers, and tankers to comply with all guidelines on Safety and Standard operations or be sanctioned, the Director listed some areas of agreement between all parties, such as zero-tolerance for rickety trucks and articulated vehicles on Lagos roads; all drivers of articulated vehicles should ensure they hold the required Class-G drivers license; and there should be adequate publicity on radio, television, and newspapers on government directives to sensitize other members absent from the gathering. Other decisions include the following: all articulated vehicles that develop mechanical problems should not be allowed to load or leave their loading points; there should be a collaboration with haulage companies that own computerized testing facilities that meet global standard practice to enhance compliance and safety; there should be continuous training and retraining of drivers, among others. - The highpoint of the stakeholder's meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the State Government and Trucks Owners to ensure safety and free vehicular movement on Lagos roads. https://lagosstate.gov.ng/blog/2020/03/14/lasg-gives-ultimatum-for-removal-of-rickety-vehicles-from-roads/

The Management of Turkish Airlines has debunked as fake news the reports that it had suspended flights to Nigeria over the coronavirus outbreak. This was disclosed by General Manager, Turkish Airlines, Yunus Ozbek. Indeed, reports had circulated in the media earlier in the week that Turkish Airlines had announced the cancellation of all its flights to Lagos, Abuja, and Port-Harcourt to avoid the further spread of the coronavirus currently ravaging the world. However, Ozbek has dispelled the reports as not reflecting the true situation, even as he clarified that the airline had been constrained to adjust its flight schedules to several destinations around the world. ‘‘We would like to advise our passengers that some reported news mentioning Turkish Airlines’ full-suspension decision on its flight operations to/from Nigeria do not reflect the reality. ‘‘Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in various countries, Turkish Airlines has been changing its flight schedule to various destinations around the globe in accordance with international and national authorities. We would like to inform our passengers that due to the lowered load factors caused by the suspension of other routes, several of our flights to/from Nigeria will be undergoing cancellations during March.’’ Furthermore, he disclosed that affected passengers can seek refunds or have their flights changed free of charge. ‘‘Passengers with tickets to the canceled flights will be able to refund or change their tickets free of charge until the end of May if they start the process until March/April depending on the route.’’ Meanwhile, Turkish Airlines has further underlined its commitment to the health and safety of its passengers, even as it pledged to work with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other national authorities in following all appropriate precautions. ‘‘As the airline that always puts travel security at the forefront, Turkish Airlines will continue to monitor the latest developments on the situation with the national and international health authorities and take appropriate precautions. As the World Health Organization declared the potential risk of the virus, we have been acting in accordance with the recommendations and instructions of World Health Organization, IATA, and related national and international authorities since the first week of January 2020.’’ Furthermore, the airline has advised all passengers to complete the passenger self-reporting form distributed by the Federal Ministry of Health. The WHO on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, formally declared the novel coronavirus a global pandemic. SOURCE: https://brandspurng.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=61638&action=edit

By now, we believe that you’re aware of the coronavirus outbreak around the world. A new case was discovered in Nigeria on Monday after the first one in February so we hope you’ve been doing your best to keep yourself and family safe by following the preventive guidelines from us and other health bodies. However, it’s important to note that personal preventive measures are one thing while workplace policies for disease prevention are another matter entirely. Regarding the latter, we recommend the following precautionary measures to minimize your chances of contracting or spreading the virus at work: Security Post & Reception Hand sanitizers should be provided at your gatehouse and at the entrance to your office. Please ensure you use them before entry. Your security guards and front desk staff should also be mandated to ensure the use of hand sanitizers by all guests and staff while non-contact thermometers should be provided for use. People with temperatures of 37.6°C and above should be denied entry and advised to go for tests. Offices Sanitizer dispensers should be provided on each floor and all staff should be encouraged to use them at intervals - particularly after moving in and out of closed offices or meeting rooms. Restrooms Wash your hands properly with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds) after using the restroom. Hand sanitizers should be provided for staff use. Kitchen Caterers should use face masks and wear gloves when serving meals (gloves should be changed at intervals). Cutlery should always be soaked in a saltwater solution and handed to staff using a food thong. House Keeping Janitors should take out the trash every two hours, wash the bins and mop the floors with water and bleach. Door handles, flat surfaces and telephones in your workplace should be disinfected at least thrice a day. Events & Meetings It is best for your staff to limit both local and international travel unless absolutely necessary. Virtual meetings should be explored. Do not travel if you have a fever and cough. Illness Employees who are ill must notify their direct supervisor, HR and see a doctor immediately. They should stay away from the office until they are fit for work. Infection at the Workplace One of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) protocols for containing the virus is for any premises where someone tests positive with the virus to be locked down. Representatives of the NCDC will then come in to evacuate the patient while those in recent close contact with the patient will be quarantined at the location. Finally, given the possibility of lockdowns, your HR unit should work with the IT team to proactively explore how staff can work from home till the situation improves and they’re cleared to return to the office. Please educate your family and friends on these prevention tips as well. SOURCE: https://brandspurng.com/2020/03/11/is-your-workplace-coronavirus-proof/
