Politics / Biafran Struggle, We Won’t Succumb To Intimidation —MASSOB by rawglobalnewss: 7:07am On Nov 25, 2015
The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has said that no amount of intimidation, harassment and blackmail will ever deter its leader Chief Ralph Uwazurike from dropping the agitation for the actualization of Biafran Republic.

This was disclosed by the Regional administrator for MASSOB, in Isu, Imo State, Prince Ogaraku Venatus in a statement made available to us.

“We have absolute confidence, trust, respect, and faith in our leader and father of the agitation for Biafra actualization Chief Ralph Uwazuruike’s leadership traits and strong conviction to actualize Biafra.

“We have also uncovered a planned move by some disgruntled Igbo politicians to stage anti-Biafra rally in Abuja. That move will fail and our leader Chief Uwazurike is not worried about such silly and selfish move by the people we understand have been paid heavily to do the protest.

“Chief Uwazurike has succeeded in telling the Federal Government of Nigeria that he does not mince words in his determination to achieve the Biafran state and equally expose the injustice done to Ndigbo. So, the politician whose interest is nothing more than money in their pockets cannot stop MASSOB or any other pro-Biafra group,”he said.

Prince Ogaraku also prayed that no evil plan intended to scuttle the Biafra struggle will succeed.

Restoration of Biafra

Similarly, another Igbo political group, Ndigbo United Assembly, NUA, yesterday, added its own voice in the on-going agitation for the restoration of Biafran state, saying that Biafra is on course.

Speaking to newsmen during a peaceful demonstration embarked upon by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, President-General of NUA, Comrade Peter Okala declared: “My take on the Biafran agitation is positive in the sense that our colonial masters knew our differences before making a contract of amalgamation to try if we could understand ourselves, but the fact remains that till date, the centre could not hold and the South East is still hated with passion by our Northern and South West brothers.”

Okala who is also a one-time governorship candidate of the National Conscience Party, NCP, in Anambra State asked: “Could you imagine Wole Soyinka using Igbo people to popularize his seminar topic in far away United States of America, where he was quoted as saying that Igbo people can only vote at the direction of their stomach? So, what kind of a hopeless statement from a so-called prominent citizen is that?

“In Nigeria today, if one is asked to name 100 most corrupt people in Nigeria who have emptied our treasury , hardly will an Igbo man be among them. But we are abused in every part of Nigeria as people, who could do anything to get money simply because the West is in control of the media and the North has partnered with them to marginalize the South-East.”

Okala also observed that the inabilty of political office holders in the South -East to join the pro-Biafra movement is not a crime because it may be a treason in Nigerian laws, but it’s the right of every person to choose an association or a country he or she should belong to and there is no law that will empower anyone or institution to stop it.”

Politics / APC Senators Frustrate Move To Summon Buhari Over Fuel Scarcity by rawglobalnewss: 6:53am On Nov 25, 2015
EFFORTS by senators of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to convince the Senate to summon President Muhammadu Buhari to give reasons for the ongoing fuel scarcity in the country, were frustrated, yesterday, by their counterparts in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The PDP senators, who berated the President’s handling of current economic situation in the country, insisted that he be made to a appear before the Senate to give explanations on the cause of the fuel scarcity and how he intended to solve the issue as Minister of Petroleum.

Their frustrated efforts came following a motion, tagged: “The current fuel scarcity all around the country and the need to urgently resolve the crisis,” sponsored by Senator Jibrin Barau, APC, Kano North and 23 other senators, which was debated upon.

Speaking through Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, PDP, Abia South, the opposition senators accused the President of mismanaging the country’s oil sector, causing untold hardship for Nigerians, barely six months after being in the saddle as president.

But the Senate, in a reaction to the development, said the President could not be summoned even as Minister of Petroleum.

The red chamber, reacting through its chairman on Media and Publicity, Aliyu Sabi, insisted that the fact that the President was overseeing the Petroleum ministry as a substantive minister, did not make him to be easily summoned like other ministers.

Abaribe had, while contributing to the motion, urged the Senate to summon President Buhari to explain why the Federal Government was yet to find solutions to the continued fuel problem in spite of its claim that the refineries in the country were working.

He said the unnecessary hardship occasioned by the scarcity could only be resolved if lawmakers were adequately briefed on the true state of affairs. Senator Abaribe‘s submission received wide support from other PDP senators, as they all hailed him.

Senator Abaribe supported his call with a prayer for adoption but it was defeated when the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, put it up for a voice vote.

At this point, the APC Senators, who were more in number, defeated their PDP colleagues with overwhelming shout of “yes” against the PDP’s “nay.”

President cannot be summoned —Senate
Earlier, in his motion, Senator Barau regretted that Nigerians were going through untold hardship following the lingering fuel problem.

“We are worried that the scarcity is creating an untold hardship to our citizens who have to pay higher prices for these products especially petrol. We are convinced that the current situation is not in tune with the desire of the progressively inclined government to bring succour to Nigerians in all spheres of their lives,” Senator Jibrin noted.

But at a briefing after the plenary session, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Aliyu Sabi, explained why President Buhari could not be summoned by the Senate.

He said as the Commander-in-Chief, it was wrong to invite him to appear before the Senate, despite the fact that he was the Minister of Petroleum.

Politics / Buhari To Launch Helicopters In Lagos For Police Patrol by rawglobalnewss: 6:46am On Nov 25, 2015
LAGOS—President Muhammadu Buhari is billed to commission three helicopters purchased by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration as part of efforts to beef up security in the state.

Meantime, the state government has disclosed plans to rehabilitate 189 identified deplorable roads, including the Ilasa-Ijesha bus stop, along Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

General Manager, Lagos State Public Works Corporation, Engr. Ayo Shodeinde disclosed this yesterday, at Aluasa, Ikeja, while giving highlights of the state government’s efforts in the area of road infrastructural upgrade in the last six months.

Buhari, who will be visiting Lagos officially for the first time since his inauguration, will be handing over the helicopters to the police authorities for immediate operation.

Shodeinde, while giving the update on the total number of roads rehabilitated so far, explained that Ambode has approved rehabilitation of 189 new roads across the state.

He added that despite the N52 billion being owed the state for the total number of federal roads fixed in the past, the state government since June 15, 2015, had rehabilitated 282 roads, “while 189 new roads have been listed for rehabilitation and construction work will soon commence.”

“When the Federal government repays us the debts, we will be able to rehabilitate more roads in the state.” Shodeinde said.

One of the deplorable roads listed for rehabilitation, Shodeinde said is the Ilasa-Ijesha Bus stop, along Apapa Oshodi Expressway which has recently turned into nightmare to motorists.

Sports / CHAN Eagles Resume Training In Abuja by rawglobalnewss: 7:24am On Nov 23, 2015
Nigeria home-based Super Eagles will resume training for next year’s CHAN in Abuja in the first week of December, officials have announced.

The 2015 CHAN will be hosted by Rwanda from January 16 and Nigeria have been drawn alongside Niger, Tunisia and Guinea in the group phase of the biennial tournament reserved for players playing in their home leagues.

An official informed: “The players will regroup by the first week of next month and will break for Christmas before they reconvene for a training camp overseas.”

Dubai and a country close to Rwanda are being considered for this training camp. The CHAN is now a priority competition for Nigeria as it is considered a full international tournament and a team’s performance there will count in the FIFA rankings, which will be one of the yardsticks to use to seed teams for the final round of the qualifying tournament for the 2018 World Cup.

Nigeria occupy a disappointing 59th place in the FIFA rankings and will need to garner some good wins to enjoy a better rating and invariably a more favourable draw for the World Cup qualifiers.

Politics / Leaders To Meet Buhari On Igbo Marginalization- Biafra Struggle by rawglobalnewss: 7:07am On Nov 23, 2015
THE meeting of Igbo leaders summoned yesterday by the South East Governors’ Forum, SEGF, to discuss the security implications of the agitations by members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, and the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, ended in Enugu with the leaders resolving to set up a delegation of Igbo elders to meet President Muhammadu Buhari on the marginalisation of Igbo in the country.

They also agreed to dialogue with members of the MASSOB and IPOB groups with a view to ending the protests now rocking the old Eastern region.

The two factions of Ohanaeze were not however, part of the meeting as they were not invited as the governors had reasoned that inviting any of them would have meant legitimising such faction.

The Enwo Igariwey leadership of Ohanaeze had exhausted its tenure while the Ralph Obioha faction was not properly elected even as it was now the turn of Enugu State to produce the new chairman of the pan- Igbo group.

Both MASSOB and IPOB members have been agitating for the release of the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, detained by security agents for running an illegal radio station.

A four-point communique read by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, at the end of the meeting on behalf of his colleagues read, “We agreed that south-east governors should set up a committee to immediately address the impasse on Ohanaeze leadership. After a compassionate review of the recent MASSOB/IPOB agitations in the country, it was resolved that a committee be set up to dialogue with MASSOB,IPOB as well as the Federal Government with a view to finding a lasting solution to the issue.

“The elders also examined other issues including poor state of infrastructural facilities in the south-east, marginalization in federal appointments and other socio-economic issues that impact on the economic development of the south-east and resolved to support the decision of south-east governors to set up an economic council and urged them to interface with the Federal Government on remedial measures. A delegation of elders of the south-east was mandated to meet with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Earlier in his welcome address, Governor Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwanyi of Enugu State, said the meeting was a follow up to the earlier meeting of the South- East governors on November 17.

Ugwanyi said, “the meeting is a follow up to the meeting of the SEGF that we held last Tuesday, November 17, 2015, in this venue during which we reached the following resolutions on some issues affecting us as a zone; To appoint a high level Economic Advisory Committee to harness the economic potentials of the people of the South East working together. The governors are concerned about the poor state of the Federal Government roads in the zone namely the Enugu – Onitsha, Aba- Ikot Ekpene , Owerri – Port Harcourt, Enugu – Port Harcourt, among others which need urgent intervention by the Federal Government.

Crime / Agbara Robbery Kingpin Arrested After Killing 9 DSS Officials by rawglobalnewss: 6:53am On Nov 23, 2015
Leader of the dreaded gang of bank robbers which had been terrorising commercial banks in Lagos and Ogun states in military uniforms has disclosed that his gang never intended to kill nine officials of the Department of State Service, DSS, who went missing last September.

The suspect, identified as Kelly Fotor, an Ijaw native of Arugbo, Ondo State, was arrested last Saturday by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, SIRT, at a wedding ceremony in Sapele, Delta State.

Gun battle with Police and arrest

We gathered that the suspect, who was at the ceremony with some armed men, had a gun duel with the operatives which led to the killing of one of the policemen, while Fotor and three of his colleagues, were arrested with bullet wounds.

It was gathered that the SIRT operatives, led by CSP, Abba Kyari, who had been on the trail of the gang, trailed Fotor to the wedding ceremony after their last operation at Agbara area of Ogun State where they robbed a bank and left three persons, including a pregnant woman, dead.

Fotor, who sustained a bullet wound during the shootout, told us while he was being transported for treatment that he was the leader of the South South group of the gang.

He explained that the gang also had a Lagos leader who he identified as Ossy, adding that his gang was made up of 12 men, including himself, with bases in Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa and Ondo states.

Fotor also said his gang normally teamed up with their Lagos group for operations, disclosing to us that he and his gang were formerly into sea piracy before teaming up with Ossy.

According to him, Ossy is the leader of the pipeline vandals at Arepo and Ikorodu areas.

Lekki, Ikorodu, Festac and Agbara robbery operations

Fotor also said he and his men took part in the Lekki, Ikorodu, Festac and Agbra bank robberies, adding that they made N28 million from Agbara bank robbery.

“I and my group got N14 million share from the Agbara operation, while, Ossy and his group got N14 million. I left Lagos by waters that day after that operation with my men back to Igbokoda, Ondo State, where we shared the money and everyone got his share of the loot.

‘’It was Ossy’s men who usually pick out our targets. They were the ones who picked out all the targets, my job was to give support and my boat is very big and my boat boy is a professional and knows his way around the water very well,” he stated

Politics / Oshiomhole Disowns Govs, Over Minimum Wage And Backs Workers by rawglobalnewss: 7:58am On Nov 21, 2015
GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, yesterday, disagreed with other governors of the country on the ability of the states to pay the N18,000 minimum wage, saying they must pay.

Recalling that the minimum wage was agreed between the Federal Government and the organised labour by the previous administration, Oshiomhole told the governors and other elected political office holders that democracy cannot be run at their comfort and convenience.

Oshiomhole spoke as the leader of the Northern Elders’ Forum, Prof Ango Abdullahi, blasted governors for claiming that they are broke and can no longer pay workers the minimum wage and as factional presidents of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrades Ayuba Wabba and Joe Ajaero, yesterday, attended the first Central Working Committee ,CWC, meeting organised by labour veterans and stakeholders to resolve the crisis that brought division among labour leaders after its election about six months ago.

Democracy can’t be run at govs, others’ comfort
Speaking at the meeting held at the Labour House, Abuja, Governor Oshiomhole said nobody would question the wisdom behind the payment of minimum wage to workers in the country as it was not imposed on the government, rather it was a product of agreement between government and labour.

His words: “I am a labour man, I have been clear with my colleagues in seeking to find solution to the problem we face. We have to be holistic, we cannot at one hand question the wisdom behind the national minimum wage. I joined the NLC to protest to the National Assembly when they were going to amend the constitution to make the minimum wage a concurrent issue.

“I said workers have a stake in this democracy. They are the ones who could afford to march the streets and they march the streets for democracy. Democracy doesn’t have to run at the comfort or convenience of governors, ministers, and presidents.

“I believe that the issue in the economy hasn’t got to do with minimum wage. I have always also reminded my colleagues that the minimum wage was not imposed, it was negotiated and state governments agreed to it, the president signed it not under duress, there was no strike to compel the then president to sign it, he signed it voluntarily.

“I believe when you look at the minimum wage, as it is today at N18,000, it is less than 100 dollars. I think it is now about eighty dollars. Now, divide eighty dollars by 31 days, you will be getting about two point something dollars.

Politics / Northern Group Calls For Dialogue Over Biafra by rawglobalnewss: 7:32am On Nov 21, 2015
A group of Northern youths under the aegis of North-East Youths Peace Development Initiative, NEYPDI, yesterday urged President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government to dialogue with those agitating for Biafra, instead of applying force against them.

The group also dissociates itself from the call for the Igbos in the north to vacate the area.

The National President, NEYPDI, Alhaji Kyari Idris Abubakar, in a statement said: “Like those of us who have been suffering from insurgency in the past years we would not hesitate to go against anything that would lead to violence in the country. FG should dialogue with the agitators and not force, as it is not the best approach in handling the matter.”

Abubakar expressed regret over the recent call for Igbos to move out of the north, adding that it was capable of generating tensions and possibly lead to violence. “I want to remind the group that we have northerners in the south-east and other parts of the country and if the threat is carried out, they would also be asked to move back to the north, the development that negates the principle of peaceful co-existence as a nation,” he said.

The youth leader also urged President Buhari and the Service Chiefs to step into the matter in order to avoid it from degenerating. According to Abubakar since the agitators of the sovereign state of Biafra did not enjoy the support of many Igbo leaders including the governors, there was no need for one to go as far as asking the Igbos to quit northern part of the country.

Politics / I Won’t Stop Talking Of Corruption During Jonathan’s Govt—buhari by rawglobalnewss: 8:46am On Nov 02, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed not to shy away from telling Nigerians how the immediate past administration allegedly plundered the economy, irrespective of anyone’s feelings.

Responding to allegations by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that he was demarketing the country and dissuading foreign investments, the President vowed that the relentless tackles of the opposition party would not in any way dissuade him from his obligations to the citizenry and the international community.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh had, yesterday, attacked the President’s claim in India that Nigeria was broke, saying that such claims at international fora tended to worsen the country’s investment climate.

Metuh had, in his statement, alleged that such claims by the President were essentially because of his lack of a viable economic plan.

Responding to PDP yesterday, presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said that Metuh’s attempts to distract the President from focusing on his job would fail, maintaining that he was a broken record.

The statement read in part: “Our attention has been drawn to the latest statement by the PDP spokesman, Olisa Metuh, alleging that President Muhammadu Buhari is ‘demarketing Nigeria’.

“We restate for the umpteenth time to Mr. Metuh and his ilk that their attempts to distract President Buhari from the job he has been elected to do will fail.

“President Buhari will remain true to the virtues of honesty, integrity, sincerity, incorruptibility and plain-speaking, which endeared him to Nigerians and made them prefer his leadership to that of a lying and deceptive PDP administration.

Autos / Nigeria Is Most Expensive Country To Buy Car In West Africa – Survey by rawglobalnewss: 8:33am On Nov 02, 2015
A survey conducted by Nigeria’s online vehicle marketplace, Carmudi.com has shown that Nigeria is the most expensive country to buy a car when compared to its neighbouring West African countries. The study which focused on the used car model manufactured between 2008 and 2013 provided insights into the price difference across some of the surveyed countries in West Africa.

According to the study, Nigeria is the most expensive country to buy a car in Western Africa, with an average price of $19,547 dollars which is about N3.9 million while that of Senegal and Ghana are about $18,923 and $17,654 respectively. From the studies, Nigeria, Senegal and Ghana rank the top three in most expensive countries to buy a car.

The study noted that in 2013, Nigeria imported more than 500, 000 unit of cars, 75 per cent of which were used cars. Although the number of used cars imported in 2014 and 2015 reduced, Nigerians surveyed in the study agreed it was because of the increase in custom tariff rather than availability of locally manufactured cars.

The study however revealed that despite being the most expensive country to buy a used car in West Africa, Nigeria still has a high demand for cars. It noted that even though the middle class has grown three times larger in the last decade and a half, very few brand new cars have been purchased.

Carmudi pointed out that one of the difficulties Nigerians experience in the purchase of brand new cars is the lack of vehicle financing options as finance institutions give car loans with very high interest rates.

Speaking on the findings, Managing Director of Carmudi Nigeria, Amy Muoneke called for affordable loan options to aid people who wish to own locally manufactured cars.

She said: “Aside from car pricing, the actual car purchasing experience can also be improved by new car browsing and sales platforms. Websites and mobile apps like Carmudi enable buyers to access a wider range of vehicles available in their home country and make educated choices on their purchases. With such presence we see not only more activity throughout Africa, but also buyers being able to look for the best deal and easily compare prices.”

Religion / “religion Has Become Very Oppressive”- Kirk Franklin by rawglobalnewss: 8:57pm On Oct 29, 2015
Kirk Franklin’s title for his 11th studio album “Losing My Religion” sparked a mixed reaction. Last month, the 45-year-old took to Instagram to reveal the title of the album, writing:

“In the beginning religion created a mask … for generations church was where we went to go hide …. rules without relationship is empty inside. … There’s room at the cross for everyone even me … religion is a prison, but truth sets us free. The preacher isn’t God, religion’s first mistake … I’m losing my religion, Thank God … Helping you lose yours is my job.”

On “Tom Joyner Morning Show”, the Gospel singer explains why he believes people should focus on their relationship with Christ more than anything else.
“Religion, throughout the years, has become a very oppressive thing that doesn’t allow people to get to know the God it was created to try to lead them to. So basically, it’s just like marriage cannot guarantee intimacy, religion doesn’t guarantee relationship,” the recording artist and songwriter said.

“It doesn’t guarantee you’re going to have a loving relationship with God. So God becomes this distant person that’s always pointing at my sins, always beating me up and you never know Him as a friend and as a father.”

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has reiterated its commitment towards improving the welfare of corps members, regretting some corps members’ inability to get their monthly allowance in September.

The NYSC, in a statement by its Director of Press and Public Relation, Mrs Abosede Aderibigbe, said it was very sensitive to the plight of the affected corps members, pleading with them to remain calm as the matter had been addressed.

She said: “The management of the NYSC has noted the slight delay in the receipt of the September 2015 allowance by some 2015 Batch ‘A’ corps members and the September and October 2015 as well as transport allowance by some of the recently discharged 2014 Batch ‘C’ corps members. We wish to inform the affected corps members that the scheme forwarded the payment schedule at the right time but the delay in crediting the accounts of those affected was a challenge arising from failed transaction and the inability of the settlement centre to immediately reprocess for payment.”

Politics / Rival Cults Hold Lagos, Delta Communities Hostage by rawglobalnewss: 7:41pm On Oct 25, 2015
The increasing rise in cult-related violence has given most Nigerians food for thought as many innocent souls are wasted. While the spread of these cult activities are attributed to the urbanization of many Nigerian rural communities, especially in the case of Delta State, that of Lagos cannot be said to be urbanisation.

Bariga, Mushin, Ikorodu and a few of other places in Lagos have become dens of cultists. Recently, the residents of the riverine community of Ilaje, Bariga, Lagos, have been known no peace just as many of them live in palpable fear, others have resolved to contend with violent acts which occur daily.

Similarly, residents of Mushin through Odi-Olowo, Idi-Araba, Olosa, have also cried out as violence activities have become not only a norm but a way of life among teenagers and young-adults.

The recently installed Ayangbunren of Ikorodu, Oba Adewale Shotobi declared that he would make life uncomfortable for the cultists in the town except they halt their violence and clandestine activities. The gladiators are not fighting over land, but control of economic resources through violence. The ‘Strong Men’ of the area make a lot of money from security levies collected from shops, illegal collection of levies from motorcycles and other commercial vehicles, as well as through other shady avenues.

Politics / Ministerial Nomination Impasse: My Story, By Amaechi by rawglobalnewss: 7:02pm On Oct 25, 2015
WHO IS CHIBUIKE ROTIMI AMAECHI?

I happen to be one of the best Nigerians to have served as Speaker for eight years. In the period I served, Speakers were impeached almost on regular basis. I have also served as a governor of Rivers State under the PDP, but during my second term, I was governor of Rivers State under APC. Distinguished senators, it is a rare privilege to stand here today to address you. I believe that this is my first time of addressing the Senate and I thank you. I thank the President for this privilege. Whether I become a minister or I not, this will go in the history book of mine that I once addressed the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but truly at the mercy of the Senate.

And as you know, this is a hallowed chamber, so I am deeply humbled and honoured that I have been nominated by the President and to have been give the chance to address you on what I thought would be the little contributions I have made to the development of Nigeria. I told you earlier that my name is Chibuike Amaechi, I am truly a Nigerian.

Politics / I Am Not Shy Around Women – Buhari by rawglobalnewss: 2:33pm On Oct 24, 2015
President Mohammdu Buhari has expressed shock over comments credited to one Gideon Samani that he (Buhari) is shy around women, a development which informed less number of women in the ministerial nominations. To set the record straight, the President said the assertion was totally false, saying that he has never been shy around the opposite sex even as he declared that Samani who paraded himself as his Senior Special Assistant (Political Matters) is an impostor.

A statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina revealed that such office as Senior Special Assistant, Political Matters, in the office of the President does not exist at the moment.

The statement further submitted that President Buhari who has a wife and daughters cannot be shy around women, pledging the President’s continued consideration of Nigerian women in the affairs of the nation.

The statement read thus: “The claim that President Muhammadu Buhari is shy around women, purportedly made by one Gideon Samani yesterday and published by a national newspaper today is totally fallacious.
