A surveyor and engineer of thirty years published in the Birmingham Weekly Mercury stated, “I am thoroughly acquainted with the theory and practice of civil engineering. However bigoted some of our professors may be in the theory of surveying according to the prescribed rules, yet it is well known amongst us that such theoretical measurements are INCAPABLE OF ANY PRACTICAL ILLUSTRATION. All our locomotives are designed to run on what may be regarded as TRUE LEVELS or FLATS. There are, of course, partial inclines or gradients here and there, but they are always accurately defined and must be carefully traversed. But anything approaching to eight inches in the mile, increasing as the square of the distance, COULD NOT BE WORKED BY ANY ENGINE THAT WAS EVER YET CONSTRUCTED. Taking one station with another all over England and Scotland, it may be stated that all the platforms are ON THE SAME RELATIVE LEVEL. The distance between Eastern and Western coasts of England may be set down as 300 miles. If the prescribed curvature was indeed as represented, the central stations at Rugby or Warwick ought to be close upon three miles higher than a chord drawn from the two extremities. If such was the case there is not a driver or stoker within the Kingdom that would be found to take charge of the train. We can only laugh at those of your readers who seriously give us credit for such venturesome exploits, as running trains round spherical curves. Horizontal curves on levels are dangerous enough, vertical curves would be a thousand times worse, and with our rolling stock constructed as at present physically impossible.” 2 Likes 1 Share |

donJ2:Nigerian youths have so much to do.. the problem now is that most of us(the youth) instead of airing our personal views we air the views of this criminals. Imagine when the youths of a country are more interested in calling each other names, than to actually hold this greedy criminals accountable for what they have done and what they are still doing to this country. Its really just so sad, i know people(my former economic geology lecturer etc) that will do a whole lot of good for this country but instead we have thieves ruling us.. Each day i read comments of people calling each other zombie, wailers, flat heads, afonja etc now how will a country filled with so much hate for one another grow.. |
Politics / Re: The Sorry State Of Nigeria Under President Muhammadu Buhari by raynold(m): 9:46pm On Feb 16, 2017 |
auggie340:the faster we realize this old men do not deserve our votes the better for this country.. we the youths are also to blame for the present condition of this country, all we do is seat back insult one another, while they continue to milk us dry. did you hear of the Romania incident, now that is a country were the youth know their right and also have rights. we are blinded by tribe, religion etc we have a long way to go.. a country were the minister of the countries capital must come from the North, is that one country. |

deomelo:believe you me, if i should handle that budget i'll most likely save us billions of naira or even trillion. why don't we start their. getting a better economic team will go a long way. as much as it pains me to say, we need ngozi okonjo-iweala help/consult, we need all the help we can get right now.. you still sound like you blame GEJ for all that is happening to us, GEJ is the biggest scam non to man but PMB is really not far behind.. |
Politics / Re: The Sorry State Of Nigeria Under President Muhammadu Buhari by raynold(m): 8:34pm On Feb 16, 2017 |
deomelo:so what policies has PMB implemented? from 222/$ to 510/$, high cost of living, no increase in minimum wage(even war torn countries earn more) etc in 2 years.. you honestly can't blame all that on GEJ.. We should be talking about solutions here and not blaming someone, if you are the CEO of a company and you keep blaming past CEO's for the current situation of the company after 2 years do you think you will still have that job, the board/Nigerians already know the person heading the office in the past messed up greatly and you were hired to fixed the problem and not to blame past persons for 2years.. 4 Likes |

chaii Nigeria is truly finished, woww how people find nothing wrong in a president that has gone awol for over two weeks amazes me.. Nigerians voted this man in and he can't even acknowledge us the people he claims to preside over, instead he is busy taking pictures with criminals, or do we the people now have to visit him in London to know that all is well.. We truly have a long way to go in this country. we Nigerians are a complete disgrace to the human race.. the sooner we realize that the old fools do not give a damn about us the better.. I truly do not regret me not having a voters card, i can never stand under hot Nigerian sun and risking my life for any of this criminals. 2 Likes |
